Do they even have midnight screenings of the RHPS anymore?
Portland: The Clinton has been showing The Rocky Horror Picture Show weekly since 1978, making it one of the longest running movies in the world! Come on down and join us any Saturday night at midnight (doors open at 11:30pm). ... Remember this is an interactive show. At least two weekends of the month (1st, 3rd and the occasional 5th Saturdays), the Rocky Horror Picture Show is hosted by the Clinton Street Cabaret. They start the evening out with a pre-show that includes virgin games, and they perform live as the movie plays on the screen behind them. This can be a rowdy, raunchy Rocky experience. Think South Park without anything bleeped out. And while the cast itself has certain rules and guidelines under which it operates, we cannot control and would not want to censor the conduct or speech of audience members. Oh brother. Should have known WD was an RHPS apologist. I've come to think it's an attempt to mainstream perversion, and I've memorized most of the songs. I could add in the little asides and who spoke them that were left out in WD's cut-n-paste.
What I wonder is, would it be considered unacceptable by today's political correctness crowd? Frank-n-furter is portrayed as a narcissistic, self indulgent, self-pitying sociopath. Rocky Horror was more fun when it was actually transgressive, and not viewed as a standard that people are increasingly expected to conform
to. Yeah, my favorite RHPS reference recently was the photo of two white men not dressed up as women (I think one was that Subway guy) labeled "child molesters", and then a photo of Frank N Furter on Lips and the label "not a child molester". Like, dude, did you even see the movie? If there had been children in the movie, he would have molested them. And it is pretty much stated outright that he molested Eddie when Eddie was underage. Not to mention that (a) he then literally ate him and (b) the new bathroom rules were literally about letting people who look like men use girls' bathrooms without being questioned. I had never heard of RHPS, but my brother and sister talked it up.
I set up a reflux in the lab, then meandered over to the Student Union for a midnight show. When I got in line, there were all these undergrads in funny clothes. And a very hot nurse. And a strange dude, if it was a dude, I was not in Kansas anymore. Others were into the show, but I thought it was stupid. Except for the "Toucha Touch Me" song. She was hot. Went back to the lab and worked up the reaction. Posted by: NaCly Dog at October 26, 2018 10:27 PM (hyuyC) 102

- It has a plot and it is basically moral. The good guys win , the bad guys lose, and the Earth is saved. Brad, having been exposed to evil, is irrevocably broken but everybody else, even Janet, endures and survives. Rocky, although basically innocent, is an unnatural beast and must be, and is, destroyed. Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Tyrannosaur Wrangler at October 26, 2018 10:31 PM (+y/Ru) 120
Interesting fact. In the opening scene at the church ("Be just and fear not"), the church is in fact an Episcopal church. How appropriate given the movie. Their clergy probably behave in ways that would put the Transylvanians to shame. There vestments are already more campy than the costumes in Time Warp.

There is angst in left-wing Oregon, since a number of right-wing initiatives have made it onto the ballot, which is obviously an abuse of the intuitive system.
One of them, Measure 106, would ban state funding of abortions - basically, the State of Oregon currently will pay for anyone's abortion who doesn't have private health insurance. The official cost analysis for Measure 106 says that costs would actually rise by nearly $10 million a year if the initiative passed. That's because costs for "health care, food and nutrition services provided by state government programs" would rise if more pregnancies are carried to term. Imagine how much more money the State of Oregon could save if Oregon legalized the killing of infants. Think of the savings in "health care, food and nutrition services"! The star of the movie is Tim Burton, who is actually a very good actor when not portraying a Transexual from another planet. Members of the audience act out the movie, scene by scene, line by line, in full costume in front of the screen, while the movie is playing. The audience participates by shouting or throwing things. Outdoor scene in a rainstorm? People shoot squirt guns into the air (and no that might not be water). Wedding scene? people throw rice. Posted by: mindful webworker - hockey roarer pitcher chow? at October 26, 2018 10:30 PM (cNEwX) Since you're old enough so that it wouldn't influence your world view, you might find it fun to watch it at least once. Richard O'Brien has a genius for writing catchy, trashy songs, and for self-deprecating weirdness. Given what it is - a stage play adapted for a movie (this is obvious in the way it is laid out - a series of static scenes), and how low budget it is, it's pretty well done. Richard O'Brien has a genius for writing catchy, trashy songs, and for self-deprecating weirdness.
He played one of the strangers in Dark City. According to the audio commentary, he kept the cast amused by writing and singing the musical version of Dark City during breaks. That would have been a DVD extra worthy of praise if they'd been able to include some of them. I actually enjoyed Rocky Horror the one time I watched it on DVD; I was not impressed with Shock Treatment but the songs are indeed catchy and weird. I think so. I've watched it at least three times on DVD and enjoyed it more each time. Posted by: hogmartin at October 26, 2018 10:51 PM (y87Qq) I think his thing was "does of set of all sets that do not contain themselves contain itself?" If it doesn't then it should. Perhaps. In the end, he realizes that the problems of one man in his world don't amount to a beach of shells, and that he needs to address the tyranny darkening the world. But of course I'm also a big fan of Casablanca. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at October 26, 2018 11:19 PM (2lndx) 269

Pope Francis Decries 'Insults' as a Form of Homicide
Kind of a sensationalist headline, but what he's quoted as saying seem to be generally in line with Christian doctrine. He's correct that hatred is equated with murder in the NT, but I'm not crazy about some of his wording when he's explaining why it's wrong: Insulting others "is a way of killing a person's dignity," Francis continued. ... "Man has a noble, very sensitive life, and possesses a hidden 'I' that is no less important than his physical being," Francis said. From what I understand of Christian theology, it is wrong to murder humans because they have the Imago Dei (Genesis 9:6). In other words humans possess vicarious worth, they do not possess intrinsic worth. When Pope Francis says that people possess "dignity" or "nobility" without any mention of the Imago Dei this could cause people to believe they possess innate value, that they have independent worth apart from God. So in my armchair opinion, I think he's being a bit sloppy. And of course as others have pointed out, for him to bring this up now is a bit opportunistic. And is it really an "insult" to say Cardinal McCarrick is a pervert or that Francis is an enabler? And not only of McCarrick, there were complaints about him turning a blind eye when he was a bishop in Argentina. Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at October 26, 2018 11:34 PM (/qEW2) 315

Posted by: rickl at October 26, 2018 11:11 PM (sdi6R) Compare the image before contrast media with the image after contrast media. "Bad" areas are brighter after the contrast media due to inflamation or increased blood perfusion, both associated with bad things such as growth or injury. The other way to tell is to compare with a previous scan and look for changes. Even the doctors will rarely commit themselves based on one scan - they wait for multiple scans to see how things are changing. For my part, brain MRIs never look right, even with the doctor sitting there talking. Of course, he is usually pointing at things and saying this could be something, or it could be nothing. You can read the report on the MRI, but unless you have read a bunch of them they all sound bad. Posted by: half a mind at October 26, 2018 11:51 PM (np68J) 336

If anyone watches RWBY, season 6 premiers tomorrow night. I'm looking forward to it.
Season 1-5 is on youtube. It starts a little slow with the first season episodes being 15min shorts. Hard to drive the plot in 15min. But it gets better and better in the later seasons. I'd call it American anime but that starts flame wars elsewhere because anime must technically be from Japan people say. But anyway that's the format. Just more American'y I guess. In other news, I scored a major victory in the struggle with the F 150. Swapped battery out, and the horn began sounding as soon as the battery cable hit the battery post. I located the horn relay, and unplugged it, and quiet ensued.
The battery I swapped in proved to be weak, and wouldn't crank the engine. Got another, and hooked it up with booster cables. Engine started easily. I drove it up by the shop, and looked under the dash for an alarm box. Ended up removing lower dash cover, kick panel cover, and door sill cover. There were three black boxes in there, all bearing Ford part numbers. I removed all three, since the install job was pitifully crude. A couple of wire splices were soldered, but most, including crucial wires like the crank wire, were just stripped and twisted together, and wrapped with electrical tape. Evidently, somebody added in a genuine Ford multifunction box, that acted as an alarm, keyless entry, and remote start. I ripped all that crap out, spliced the cut crank wire (using crimped-on butt splice sleeves), and tapped all the wires that had been bared for tap splices. Truck started right up when the key was turned, and I replaced the horn relay, and the horn stayed quiet until I pushed the button on the wheel. So I lost the keyless entry feature. BFD. It will look markedly different before and after the gave you the contrast media. Or look for a shift in the centerline between the two hemispheres. Not a small shift, either - you can't miss the real thing. Did you taste the contrast media when they pumped it in? Nothing like the taste of gadolinium to wake one up. 167 -- Steven Price Blair: The vast majority of bookstore owners are screaming liberals on a holy mission to convert the entire world to liberalism. Unfortunately, that isn't much of a task when it comes to the average book buyer. I was always very, very careful of what I said at my own bookstore and at any book convention I attended. I had one customer I occasionally blew up at because she was just such an anti-conservative. Usually, her husband, who wasn't quite so moronic, stepped in to calm her down before I killed her. I had a few other customers who just couldn't get it through their heads that anyone could possibly disagree with cutting edge liberalism. And the really sad thing? My store specialized in mysteries and wasn't anything remotely resembling a general book store. But I still had to hide in the closet.

You may be on to something about the Broadway thing. The song "You Took The Words..." is close to be a 70's classic (well, it is really). I think it's Meatloaf's vox that is the magic ingredient in that one. It's a fantastic bit of songwriting, but Steinman should have simplified the production/arrangements to emphasize it's strengths better. Posted by: otho at October 27, 2018 01:54 AM (LkFnL) 510
Saw RHPS live at a comic book con in Jan 2017. The part where they say "Yell the dirtiest thing you can think of to get it out of your system!" a lot of people yelled "DONALD TRUMP!" Not me! "HILLARY CLINTON'S TWAT!" at the top of my lungs, still no one heard me! Good time, though!

Steinman/Meat Loaf is Townsend/Daltrey.
You have a genius songwriter who can't deliver a performance and you have a genius performer who can't come up with or even pick his own material. Both singers have tried the "I don't need you, Dad" route and failed. Both songwriters have tried to perform. Some people are just stuck with each other. hogmartin - Another lil Hofstadter:
In Analogy, the last I read, he talks about the fluidity of thought and language, how thoughts become speech in real time with competing ideas and formulations vying with each other to "win out" and become vocalized. Doesn't always come off, not surprisingly. He gives an example from a conversation he was having with his department head about trying to get a project funded or some such. DH said, without even noticing, that he "would pull no stops unturned" to get it done. (Note the shadow of a third idiom in there, "pull no punches.") Hofstadter began compiling similar examples, discovering that they are both commonplace and almost always unremarked on. Posted by: BJM at October 27, 2018 02:01 AM (O74hG) 515

This is now the longest game in WS history. There have been 3 games in the World Series history that went 14 innings
(none longer). The one in 1916 had the Red Sox beating the Brooklyn Dodgers (then temporarily known as the Robins) 2-1 and the winning pitcher was Babe Ruth - who pitched a complete game. Posted by: Weirddave at October 27, 2018 02:09 AM (DsVup) 521

Posted by: BJM at October 27, 2018 02:01 AM (O74hG) I should read more DH, that sort of thing's definitely my jam. It's amazing how noisy a channel can get, in signal terms, before people have difficulty extracting information from it. It's not surprising that we're able to distill intent from awkward phrasing like in that example. I wonder if that kind of phenomenon is where pareidolia comes from; we're always assuming patterns might exist so we see them where they aren't. Choo-Choo motherfuckers So, I was looking over the Early Vote and Absentee data and discovered something interesting. When looking at the charts that breakdown by Gender I am finding a situation where three of the four subgroups (D-Female, R-Female, R-Male, D-Male) the Democrat male is lagging far behind. With the three others closely tracking. This reminds me of a recent Periscope by Scott Adams that says the Democrat Party is quickly becoming branded as " The Female Party", especially in response to the Kavanaugh, "BELIEVE ALL WOMEN", circus. This branding mistake may be the cause of Republicans lead in votes (so far.. + 540k or 4%). Posted by: Serious Cat at October 27, 2018 02:11 AM (GtG/j) 525

I've got the local radio on and Red Sox announcer Joe Castiglione says the game time of this game has just exceeded the total game time of the 1939 World Series. Yankees swept the Reds in 4 games and like 7 1/2 hours.

My brother constantly enters contests on this Santa Barbara radio station and wins surprisingly often. His wife is a bit freaked out by the very idea of RHPS, so he invited my go with him. Back in our teen years, going to the midnight show at the Tiffany Theater in what is now West Hollywood was a big thing before the movie became known to most of the country. 590 This is the game that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friend. Some people started to play it, not knowing what it was, and they'll continue to play it forever just because... Pete and Repeat went down to the lake; Pete fell in, who was left? There was an episode of "Monk" in which he was on an airplane with a smart-alecky kid seated in front of him who, having recognized Monk's OCD, kept running the Pete / Repeat schtick on him. It is a pleasure to converse with you both, but I'm not sure if it is a good thing for you to be up so early. I have a reason -- I want to assist old dear friends, who have turned into smug Never-Trump house guests, leave as soon as they can. Ostensibly, it is for the 13.5 hour drive they have in front of them. Their lack of examination of what is happening does grate a bit. But I gave them no clue as to my thoughts. I am looking forward to Thanksgiving with friends just to see how long the "no politics" rule remains in effect. I'm betting on "30 minutes, tops". It's odd that a booming economy and a string of diplomatic successes have actually made them dig their heels in harder instead of initiating a little reassessment and introspection. From the On-line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences, consider A250000: "Peaceable coexisting armies of queens: the maximum number m such that m white queens and m black queens can coexist on an n X n chessboard without attacking each other." Solutions have been established for only 15 terms (n = 1 to 15). The solution for n=11, which is 17, is shown here -- https://oeis.org/A250000/a250000_11.png This is an optimization problem. However, the problem has no practical importance and it is the experience of trying to solve it that is useful, rather than the solutions themselves. Good luck to you. That is the question. Does one use reason and history to destroy their arguments, and the friendship? It's like they cannot conceive of themselves not being tolerant, while, by definition, I am not a tolerant person. Midnight movies. Geez, how I remember those. They got started around here (Houston area) back in the early 1970s, towards the tail end of my time in high school. At first it was just one neighborhood movie theater (yeah, we still had those in those days), I think it was the Alabama on South Shepherd, that started the "midnight movie on Saturday night" thing. But in a matter of weeks all the neighborhood theaters joined in, and would all show the same movie on Saturday nights, as there were so many kids wanting to go that no one theater could hold them all.
And they would show a rather esoteric selection of movies; "Reefer Madness", "Easy Rider", "2001", "Fritz the Cat" (the first X-rated cartoon), "Steelyard Blues", the list was long if not necessarily distinguished. The movie would start, a sea of lighters would light, igniting the first joint of the night and off we'd go watching the movie, whatever it happened to be that weekend. This went on for the next few years, an instant weekend tradition. Then in 1977, if memory serves, the RHPS came on the scene and supplanted everything else at the midnight movies for the next few years. I had stopped attending by then, but by all accounts a good time was had by all, if you were into that sort of thing...
