18 hogmartin, thanks for the sound bar suggestion. I've got a pretty decent setup right at our TV. It's on a big wooden structure so hiding stuff isn't a problem, but I've been missing surround sound during the occasional movie I actually want to watch ever since we moved out of our old...

Wait a minute. Holy crap. That was pretty much when I stopped caring about movies. I guess I could buy into them a lot more when the experience was more theater-like. Ha. I'd never put that together.

I still watch some with the wife and kids, but I haven't bought a movie in years.

Thanks for the link.

Lot's of modern day Progressive folk wish to pretend that this nation does not have a history of innocent black men being accused of sexual assault and rape.

And the only thing that stood between them and either a prison cell, or in some cases a rope was our system of criminal justice, and the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty.

You notice that the Baltimore Sun has comments turned off?

And if you look at the comments section of all the CBS Baltimore links that I toss up, there are hardly ever any comments there as well.

38 Modern-Day Witches Plan Ritual To Hex Brett Kavanaugh

Dozens of witches say they plan to gather in New York City this month to hex Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was sworn in to the nation's highest court last week despite facing several allegations of sexual misconduct.

Dakota Bracciale, a Brooklyn-based witch who is organizing the Oct. 20 event, said the witches see the hex as a radical act of resistance that continues witchcraft's long history as a refuge and weapon for the "oppressed, downtrodden and marginalized."

One: They love to claim they are the party of science yet have loons who think they are witches.
Two: They love to laugh at Christians and our beliefs yet here is Huff Po glorifying these clowns and their silly little imaginary spells.

That Atlantic article illustrates one of my pet peeves: pointless writing just to fill column inches. You would think that people who are paid to write could put down their ideas clearly and not leave you wondering what the point of the exercise was. If the point was to make the argument that rich old white guys have it easier than poor young blacks when accused, well, duh. If the point was that black men should not be supporting the rule of law, you need to actually make an argument for that and not just en passe.

I was at a local hippie-food grocery the other day and next to the self-serve deli table was a cart full of stuff from the bakery. The cart had one of those signs on it that you could walk past for years and never notice, but once you notice it you can't stop thinking about it, and that sign read "COOKIE WAGON".

I think I'd wear a shop shirt with an embroidered "COOKIE WAGON" patch above the pocket, if I had one. If I were in the market for a new nic, I'd give that one some thought.

I want to support it, i just don't think I could take it. I do want to lay out a PSA for pro-life morons: My family (wife + 2 teen daughters) are supporting and volunteering for Thrive. This is an organization that stages ultrasound machines outside (the last) PP in our state. They have like an 85% save rate. Here's the really cool part: Thrive doesn't stop there. they have a resume service, career counseling, wardrobe assist, day care, anything to make the new mom's life better. All free. This disarms a big pro-death narrative, that pro-life groups just turn these new moms out, and they face a horrible life of poverty b/c they were "punished" with a baby. There are other groups like this around the country. Worth the time and treasure.

Yep. The theory is that if a guy died in a car crash 5 months after the storm because he was drunk and speeding, then obviously he must have had PTSD because of the effects of the storm and thus it's totes fair to say that the hurricane caused his death.

If you look back at the MSM, you can find references to "mass graves!" being found out in the countryside. What you won't find, because they've been discouraged, are the stories written by people who tried to check those out and concluded they were mostly internet hoaxes made up by people with nothing better to do.

202 I want to support it, i just don't think I could take it.

There are average 10 cars wreck on the 610 every workday.

233 I miss DOS and even COBOL but don't miss punch cards. Never made a typo untill column 78 and had to start over. Grrr

When I was in kollidge, I worked summers for the B&O railroad in a freight yard office in Southwest Baltimore. There was a midnight shift assignment to create punch cards for a big ass train made up of cars carrying truck trailers. For each train car, you had a create a punch car for the car itself and separate ones for each of the trailers. You'd eventually end up with a huge stack of cards on which you'd put a header card on which identified the train and an end card which said "that's all folks" from which you'd create a paper tape that would be read by a teletype reader. It took most of the night to do that shit and if things got busy otherwise, like deciding on a special train to clear up empty cars that were getting stacked up in the terminal with no real specific destination, I'd get calls from the destination, Hagerstown or Cumberland, wanting to know where's the fucking transmission so they could create cards on their end to go with the waybills that the conductor would hand over to them when it arrived and they could further plan to send them further out. Needless to say I couldn't tell them to fuck off so you just pounded them out.

I must've done ok because those calls were really rare and, more importantly, they kept hiring me back. It was a kind of cool situation once you understood how it worked. They were just at the very beginning of thinking of using bar code scanners which was always problematic to me since those things were really dodgy early on and freight yards are some of the dirtiest places in the city.

242 Here's something I posted Thursday night describing my drive to the farm:

Well this is shaping up to be a great day.
I left work early to drive to the farm for the weekend. In the way, the low tire pressure light in the truck comes on, so I stop at a Ford dealer to get it checked. That takes an hour and a half so I decide to get a hotel for the night in town because by this time the hurricane remnants have arrived and it's raining like hell and the wind is gusting to maybe 40or 50mph
They can't find a problem with any of the tires, so they top them all off with air and reset the sensor and don't charge me anything. Very nice! So what's the problem you ask?
Well I check into the hotel and the power goes out due to the storm. I try to call home and apparently my phone got wet so only the speaker phone is working. Then WeaselWoman calls me to say someone has hit the back of my car parked in front of the house, run over a bunch of bushes, and hit the front of the house. I leave the hotel to try and drive home, but the storm is raging and the roads are all flooded and there are trees down everywhere. So I turn around and go back to the hotel I had left earlier and the power is still out but they let me have my room back. Back at the house, the cops have come and talk to all of the neighbors and no one saw anything so they take a police report and collect some of the car parts in the yard as evidence. I call USAA to tell them what's going on and they take both a property and a vehicle claim so two deductibles will apply.
My phone still doesn't work, the lights are still out, and I'm having a candy bar and Chex mix for dinner.
The End.

UPDATE:
Not long after I posted this, and I'm not making this up, the hotel caught on fire. Had to evacuate during the height of the storm for a couple of hours while the FD figured out what was going on.

267 See if I can remember how to do this

[em]Actually, if I understood it correctly, it's 3K deaths attributed to the storm. From what I gathered, they calculated statistically how many people normally would have died in the 6 months following the storm, and anything over and above that was blamed on the storm.[/em]

According to what I heard, I wish I could remember where, they took the actual count of deaths and compared that to the statistical analysis of how many they would expect to die, based upon the assumption that 10% of the population had evacuated the island. So, although there was no actual bump in deaths, they assumed that the no statistical difference was actually a 10% increase.

274 It was interesting how the guests at the hotel all made friends and helped the poor woman in charge. The lobby was leaking and people took turns mopping up the water, helped what seemed like a dozen elderly women with canes, and generally tried to help each other. We took turns standing fire watch throughout the night, loaned power packs to others whose phones were going dead and everyone just sort of hung out in the lobby. Politics didn't come up once. -------

There are, of course, differences, but generally the manufacturers are scrambling for market share.

An interesting example is the advertising for Theraworx cramp-reliever.

Theraworx initially produced a skin lotion, which appeared to contain ingredients common to such lotions.

It didn't seem to sell very well, and I saw no advertising. Then, apparently someone at Theraworx decided to attack a market where there wasn't much competition.

The solution was to add a dab of magnesium sulfate to what seems to be the lotion formula, and market it as cramp relief.

Apparently they have the capital to advertise heavily, and thereby capture the market.

The problem that I see is that there doesn't seem to be any evidence that any topical treatment can help relieve cramps, and specifically no evidence that topical application of magnesium sulfate will provide relief.

They simply identified a niche, and are going after it.

YMMV

Batten down the hatches is a merchant term, not a Navy one. It's for the large bulk cargo hatches on merchant ships. Lose that hatch in heavy seas and a merchant ship can sink.

There was one large ship that snapped in two from going against the Mozambique Current, in part from having the forward hatch cover peel off and green water flooding in.

For over a hundred years combatant ships have had horizontal scuttles for passage through water-tight decks.

Most cargo loading openings were vertical, like helo hangers and supply elevators on replenishment ships. Coal hatches were the big exception. Today the big exception is exhaust manifolds on gas turbine ships. That is where the C-5A engines (LM-2500s) go in and out of engine rooms.

PR claims 3K killed in a smaller storm?

Actually, if I understood it correctly, it's 3K deaths attributed to
the storm. From what I gathered, they calculated statistically how
many people normally would have died in the 6 months following the
storm, and anything over and above that was blamed on the storm.

Posted by: No One of Consequence at October 13, 2018 09:33 AM (+F0Wk)

Which is an exceedingly stupid way to calculate deaths. But they did worse than that. The 3,000 number is itself an estimate. They did not count actual deaths.

It might work a bit. I know people who swear by Epsom salts --- much cheaper than Theraworx ! --- and I think that's got magnesium sulfate in it. I dunno.

But as for niche markets, have you ever seen the Gold Bond ads? Hilarious. They market individual lotions for very specific skin problems --- dry skin of course, brown spots, neck skin, hands, feet, "eczema," bumpy skin, legs, etc.

I get suspicious. I think it's all the same lotion packaged with different labels. But then I wonder why they don't just sell the stuff as a wonder lotion that fixes ALL problems.

Which is why I'm not in marketing!
