The FBI already responded, they said they were not investigating, and handed the letter over to the White House Counsel's office. Which means the Republicans knew about this long before DiFi pulled the pin on what she thought was her grenade. And that would mean, since Trump, McConnell, and Grassley have been making judicial nominations a priority, that they had already completed their own investigation, knew it was a bluff, and were just waiting to call it.

... I'm wondering what trick-play the GOPe is next going to call to take a 52-yard sack.

Because if Grassley doesn't cancel the scheduled Monday clown-show now that Prof SearedMemory isn't testifying and advance the vote to Thursday morning, that's far too many hours for the GOPe to not cock this up in a major way.

89 Another Named Witness At Alleged Kavanaugh Party Denies Being Present
https://bit.ly/2PPY6QH

Patrick J. Smyth, one of the men who was allegedly at the party where Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted Dr. Christine Blasey Ford in the 1980s, does not even remember the party and therefore denies the allegations of misconduct against Kavanaugh.

Smyth's lawyer, Eric Bruce, wrote a letter about his client's recollection of this alleged event and it will be sent to Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley and ranking member Sen. Dianne Feinstein on Wednesday, according to CNN. (RELATED: Kavanaugh's High School Friend Declines To Testify)

"I understand that I have been identified by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford as the person she remembers as 'PJ' who supposedly was present at the party she described in her statements to the Washington Post," Smyth says in the statement, CNN reported. "I am issuing this statement today to make it clear to all involved that I have no knowledge of the party in question; nor do I have any knowledge of the allegations of improper conduct she has leveled against Brett Kavanaugh."

The letter continued, "Personally speaking, I have known Brett Kavanaugh since high school and I know him to be a person of great integrity, a great friend, and I have never witnessed any improper conduct by Brett Kavanaugh toward women. To safeguard my own privacy and anonymity, I respectfully request that the committee accept this statement in response to any inquiry the committee may have."

Despite Smyth's claim, though, Ford has not publicly referenced him by name, per CNN.

Smyth and another man, Mark Judge - who was actually named by Ford - have both denied being at the party and have declined to come forward to the judiciary committee. (RELATED: Kavanaugh Classmate Named In #MeToo Letter Denies Assault Allegations)

With the two alleged witnesses declining the invitation to testify, and Dr. Ford asking for an FBI investigation before testifying next Monday, it's unclear exactly how Kavanaugh's nomination will proceed

Yes it's true. They have no legal jurisdiction and statute of limitations ran out 32 years ago IF they'd ever had jurisdiction.

100 20% of our prisoners are illegals ... the prison guards have a powerful union, they even get DC to import criminals so they can keep those six figure jobs.

But the legals are much more law abiding, so if we just open the borders to everyone, they won't commit crime! /s

but really, even the H-1Bs (or visa variants) often bring several illegals with them, and then of course the chain migration will flood us in short order. It is clearly still their plan, and still in force, proceeding apace.

Yesterday, my youngest daughter (the mother of the awesomest grandbabies in the world) informed me that Johnny Bravo were going into the pot this weekend.

Johnny Bravo are two young leghorn roosters that have been terrorizing the hens since their arrival two months ago.

Well, the daughter's favorite (and oldest) hen, Lavender, was found, mort, in the driveway. With Johnny Bravo standing over her body.

It seems that they literally gang-banged Lavender to death.

Daughter said they murdered her.

I expressed sounds of sympathy, while doing everything in my power to not laugh.

We're having chicken gumbo, btw.

Wilder got out of Germany before Hitler and lost his family in the Holocaust, but even before that, he had a nasty, cynical, caustic view of people (see the movie Kiss Me, Stupid for a prime example).

He would make jokes as they were shooting the scene where the monkey's arm flops out from under a blanket and Joe Gillis sees that the "child" she is supposedly giving to the undertaker is a primate - "Look at him, Gloria, he's worn out."

Finally, he did uncork the capper for one take - "Remember, Gloria, Norma has been fucking the monkey" - and Swanson stormed off the set in tears. Holden had to force the director to apologize.

I've read that Swanson's line, "He liked fires and poking at them with a stick," was Wilder and Brackett's little in-joke about Norma Desmond's presumed penchant for bestiality.

But, as was mentioned in the "are Bert and Ernie gay?" thread from yesterday, you can porn up anything if you have a mind to do so.

There are festivals most weekends ... lots of seafood or Cajun options. And I guess they have the arts, though I never really cared about that. Oh and drive through daiquiris ... walking down the street with a drink is no big deal. And a streetcar named desire.

Illinois is also hot and humid in summer, but nights get cooler, winter is "refreshing". But heck, maybe at some point I'll say screw it, move to some hillside in CA, stay away from the rabble of the cities ... or Costa Rica ...

There's probably several things working against ever seeing a "useful" poll. Useful meaning "reasonably accurate in predicting outcome".

1. People change and make up their minds on the way or inside the voting booth.
2. Sample sizes are waaaaay too small
3. Heisenberg Principle at work. People are not honest about their answers (for many reasons).
4. Dishonest pollsters who want their product to influence the outcome
5. Incompetent pollsters who miss the mark on constructing the sample or framing questions.

There were never any absurd Trump polls. When you examined the absurd polls you found absurdities - overstatements/understatements of demos of a state that are actually knowable and overstatements of turn out predictions.

------------------
To create the illusion of momentum. A large number of voters want to vote for the winner. All you need do is tell them who the winner will be. The down side is a lot of voters are lazy, so if you tell them their candidate has it in the bag the believe you and don't vote. Catch 22.

349 263 Dishonest pollsters who want their product to influence the outcome"

There's an "honest" pollster? Polls are designed to sell to their clients. Nothing more, nothing less. You wanna poll that says "Manatees are the most favoritist animal at the aquarium"? No problem.

Oh, and morning, y'all.

Posted by: Anon a mouse at September 19, 2018 10:34 AM (6qErC)

Let me reframe that.

Set aside the agenda stuff of the pollster. Say, for instance in this hypothetical, you personally want to do a poll, just for your own curiosity. And you have the resources to do it "right". Shooting for highest accuracy.

But you have to operate with the sample size current pollsters use.

Between the sample size and current respondent behavior, I think you simply can't get there from here.

So, yes, that means the only utility of polls is to push an agenda. Concur.

I've had a hobby horse "plan" for a while now:

Citizens may only elect their local state house representative, and maybe a handful of smaller executive and judicial type positions (magistrate, etc.)

All taxation goes directly to the local unit (township, city, borough, whatever is appropriate geographically.)

All tax funds needed by the State must be wrested from the localities.

All tax funds needed by the Feds must be wrested from the States.

All political positions above the elected representative are selected by those reprensentatives. State Senators and Governor appointed by State Reps, US Reps selected by State Reps and State Senate, US Senators selected by US Reps. POTUS selected by Senate. Courts selected by POTUS.

It may introduce unstable graft, but the inherently greedy, competitive nature of the system and the immediacy to the public of the only elected position would tend to counterbalance that I would think.

417 As I am fond of pointing out, you can almost guarantee adult women who are drug users, and have personality disorders were abused as children. Almost always sexual abuse."

In many cases, that's true, and the drug abuse often comes from something as simple as the parents divorce and an absent father figure after that.

BUT I would never say "guarantee", because I have known, and know, some women who came from good homes and had everything set up for them to do right, and yet were just wrong in the head right from the get-go. Happens with boys, too - I have a sister in law, 4 kids, 3 of them are studious, hard working, smart, handle life as well as they can, and the 4th one is just a criminal, a thug. Has always wrecked everything he's been involved with, leaves chaos in his wake, most of his family won't allow him at their houses anymore. No one has ever been able to explain why, other than that's what he chose to be at some early point.

I'll leave aside the electoral part and just focus on the financial - you may not realize that is exactly how the Confederacy was set up, with no general power of taxation held by the central government.

In practice that meant that when Lee's army was starving in Richmond in that cold winter of 1864, and was begging Georgia's Governor to send them badly needed shoes, blankets, and ammunition from his fully stocked warehouses, Georgia's Governor replied "no, I think we need them more". And 4 months later, Lee's Army collapsed and the Confederacy with it.

In a very real way, that financial system was why the Confederacy lost that war, and why the Union, the one with the big powerful Central Govm't won it. And that's why we end up with big powerful central governments as any civilization progresses - they are very good at knocking off any competitors who don't have a system capable of that level of control.

To your point:

@EdWhelanEPPC

By one week from today, I expect that Judge Kavanaugh will have been clearly vindicated on this matter. Specifically, I expect that compelling evidence will show his categorical denial to be truthful. There will be no cloud over him.

Grassley had mentioned a scenario of 'mistaken identity".

I think they may have some evidence to back this up. If so, this could be an epic end game at the Dem's expense.

Here they go playing the poll game yet again. They refused to listen in November 2016 and they are doing it again.

The only reliable poll out there at this point is Rasmussen polling Likely Voters and they have the dems up by 5+. That means the dems are treading water and will not be taking the House back in November.

lots of fishing around New Orleans ... but yeah, the humidity and heat
can be oppressive at times, not always. I worked outside then played
volleyball at a bar (or two) most nights ... never really thought about
the heat.

There are festivals most weekends ... lots of seafood
or Cajun options. And I guess they have the arts, though I never really
cared about that. Oh and drive through daiquiris ... walking down the
street with a drink is no big deal. And a streetcar named desire. . . .

That's the other routine the locals give me. "The food, and the music --!" I say, "Good food can be had anywhere, and you can even cook it yourself. And music can be had on vinyl or CD. Neither justifies being immersed in a swamp for most of the year." Gah.
