EMT 08/26/18

Hosted a party last night for a family moving from Chicago area here to free Tennessee.

Introduced them to meats done low and slow and smoky, with sides fresh from our garden.

I may now need to hibernate for a week.

3 A hearse carrying the body of U.S. Sen. John McCain, who died Saturday after a year-long battle with brain cancer, arrived in uptown Phoenix on Saturday evening.

No comment. However, I note that he never did resign.

7 Putting whatever his record was in the military and as a POW aside (and that is an area of contention in and of itself), McCain the man was petty, vindictive, venal, stubborn and interested in only one thing - his own embellishment. He was a crook (Keating Five anyone?), involved in the Benghazi/Syria debacle, a willing servant of the Deep State and his role in attempting to sabotage and then overthrow the 2016 election and presidency of the current chief executive, if it is ever fully revealed, will prove him to be a disgrace, or worse. If he deserves to be remembered for anything, it is for 36 years of being the exact opposite of what a person of leadership and character ought to be.

Condolences for his family.

I also give the mom a lot of credit. She said people were trying to make it about racism and she refused to play that card.

I went to The Brickyard 400 several years ago. Nascar had Goodyear bring a tire that couldn't handle the recently diamond cut surface (6 months prior and the IRL had no such issues after it) and the tires disintegrated after 10 laps. The race was reduced to 16 lap heat races because they threw mandatory cautions to change tires.

We were told my Robin Pemberton that we should appreciate that they put on the show and have some respect for the job they did.

I was pretty much out after that.

A lot of good, decent people die everyday, and no one ever knows who they are. They don't get Wall-to-wall coverage on Fox News.

On the bright side, he'll be forgotten in a week. Kennedy, Byrd, etc., all gone and forgotten. Yes, McCain, you'll get one last #NeverTrump jab in, and then you'll become a memory in the minds of a country with a population incapable of naming all three branches of the federal government.

The one good thing from 50 years ago and all the bad things ever since, all forgotten.

193 I've never understood the prohibition against speaking ill of the dead. Should we be going around saying "Well, Adolf loved his dog, God rest 'im*"? (Obviously McCain is not on Hitler's level - just an extreme example.)

On the other hand, I *do* think "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" is a good rule of thumb. Not for the person you'd be speaking badly about, but for yourself. As someone who struggles with depression and OCD, I've come to believe that the value of a positive attitude can't be overstated. My sister has spent the last year or so deliberately wallowing in negativity, and it's having a very obvious effect on her (and I can't stand to talk to her anymore).

*please be picturing the scene in Hot Fuzz where the florist lady is talking about various murder victims and adding "God rest 'im" after each one, culminating in "...that Martin, George, and Eve - God rest the lot of 'em..."

That of which he spent his entire elected career trying to thwart.
