To Protect AND SERVE Florida officer helps shave homeless man’s beard so he could get a job I mentioned yesterday that I was in Ft. Worth all week. I was at a leadership conference, and I had the good fortune to spend some time with the CEO of my company. The man is a legend, he took a small, struggling company and turned it into an industry powerhouse, making hundreds of folks millionaires along the way. Then he retired, and a year or so later he did it again, coming out of retirement to resurrect another company that was even worse off than the first one, and less than a decade later, here we are again, right back on top (and beating the stuffing out of the first company that decided to go corporate after he left). I've know him for 20 years, and his success isn't due to superior intelligence, an ability to work harder than anyone else or a blinding charisma (although he has all of those things, in spades). No, his success is due to the culture that he instills everywhere he goes. It's in the company mission statement, a mission of H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Everyday). He talks about service constantly. “Your income is the outcome”, he'll tell you, “The outcome of approaching everyone you meet with the attitude of trying to be of service to them”. The part that a lot of people, particularly our liberal friends, miss, is that having a servant's heart (as Sarah Palin put it), does not mean that you're subservient to anyone. Quite the opposite. You can be a fire-breathing Alpha male and still have a servant's heart. Like our friend the cop linked above. (BTW, we're hiring, if anyone needs a job drop me a line, my nic at gee, mail!) The Story of James Found this thread on Twitter, all about an intern named James. James failed to realize that, even on Casual Friday, American flag tank tops still weren’t appropriate office attire. When we asked him to change, he came back in a tank top and tennis shoes because he thought his flip flops were the issue. Some pretty funny stuff. When you get down to people commenting on the thread it goes to the usual social media sinkhole, with some SJW folks bitter about James' “white privilege” or “male privilege” preventing him from getting fired (for what? There's nothing overtly “fireable” in the stories recounted, and only one thing I recall that might even be borderline). Didja ever notice that SJW types tend to demand acceptance of every single foible they have, while refusing to give any leeway to anyone else? I guess they never read Matthew 18: 21-35. Related: Justin Welby reimagines a poorer and less free Britain The Archbishop of Canterbury, for heaven's sake. The article is a great fisking of his nonsense, by the way. I wish I could have every collectivist in the world standing before me. I'd pound this truth into their empty heads: THERE.IS.NO.GREATER.GOOD. With a mace. The “greater good” is achieved by maximizing the number of individual goods in a society. It can never be imposed from above, no matter how wise, or smart or * spit * “compassionate” you think you are. The Auschwitz Volunteer How many of you have heard of Witold Pilecki? If you haven't, you should make it a point to learn about a man who volunteered to go undercover as a prisoner in Auschwitz, and stayed there for 3 years. Mutated strains of HIV circulating in a Canadian province where HIV rates rank among the highest in North America could be leading to the more rapid development of Aids-related illnesses, according to new research.
The research, published in the scientific journal Aids, was sparked by anecdotal reports from Saskatchewan, where HIV rates in 2016 exceeded the national average tenfold in some areas. Nearly 80% of those infected with HIV in the province are indigenous. "Some of our physician colleagues in Saskatchewan started to report that they were seeing cases of people being infected with HIV and getting very sick, very quickly," said Zabrina Brumme, the lead author of the study and a professor at Vancouver's Simon Fraser University. Great fun, crawling underneath the van in the slush to do this. Finally, I'd had enough. "So, X, do you really think women should be treated exactly as men?" This was like throwing red meat to a starving Doberman, of course. "Great. I agree. It's YOUR turn to put the fucking chains on. A has done it, B has done it, I have done it, everyone here has done it, except you. You're only the one who hasn't. So hop to it." I almost bought a new refrigerator this week, but cancelled it. The damn thing's performance was declining and then about two weeks ago, the ice maker just crawled to a near stop. I'm a sweet tea addict and without ice to make it, well, I'm headed for the DTs. So, I noticed it was running much. I figured who knows, maybe low on Freon, and saw it was R-12, and that stuff is scarce, and that the low pressure cutouts or something were kicking in. So, I ordered a new one. And then I got to fucking around. I found a wiring diagram for the thing online, and looking, noticed, no, there are no pressure cutouts or anything. There's only an overload relay on the compressor motor. Hmmm. So, I roll the damn thing out. And see there's a wiring diagram pasted right on the back. Hell, if I'd have just looked, I would've seen. So, what the hell. I get my meter. Turns out there were some dead spots in the defrost timer relay. So, I rigged a manual SPDT switch to cut that out and see. Well, now, I've got to the freezer at 0.6F (+/-2F, I think on that thermocouple setup), and the lower fridge compartment is hovering at 32-33F. Ice maker is going gangbusters. I cancelled the new fridge. So, after I decide to get a new one, I somehow get motivated to figure out what's wrong. Anyway, Bezos had a cheap Chinese replacement defrost timer for $12. Name brand was $65. I've got the cheap one on the way. Been manually defrosting it every 12 hours or so with my jury rigged switch. To many libtards try to co-opt that passage to mean that the Lord will favor the sinner over the preacher rather then taking the entire passage into account. 145 Feminists want women to be treated as equal to men in every way

Then ask her if it's fair that women should pay more for health insurance, or be paid less for an annuity. She'll splutter with rage. Regarding cats waking one up to be fed:
When I was working, I used to get up at 4:30 AM every morning, and the first thing I would do after urinating was feed the cats. After I retired, one cat would try to wake me up, but it didn't work because I am a deep sleeper and even when woken up, I can fall back asleep in seconds. So, the cat found a new strategy. It wakes my wife up instead. She is a light sleeper. The cat doesn't even try to wake me up anymore. It just keeps pestering my wife until she makes me get up to feed it. In effect, the cat has made her a catspaw. Posted by: Toad-O at July 27, 2018 11:09 PM (cct0t) 216

So much so that at on the last day of each month I turn on each irrigation circuit (which normally comes on at 3 am) to make sure the various outlets are not crapped up with lime scale, and I turn on/off each angle stop to break up any lime scale that has deposited in the last month. But then again, we don't have corrosive water here, relatively, I would guess. * From the navy days, the power plant water chemistry guys had an in joke that the answer to "what is X value on this particular water test?" is "what do you want it to be?" Something I thought about doing with an electric water heater, but never did was this. They have two elements, top and bottom, but they never run both at the same time. This is to keep the circuit requirements less than 30A (well, 24A, max continuous on a 30A circuit, 80%). So I though about just pulling two circuits and rigging it to let both run at the same time, if needed, and wondered what that would do for the recovery time. I've got a gas water heater now, and that's now a problem. I've sort of mused about putting hot water out in the shop, and I've got 3-phase out there, and would've just ran the two elements between two different phases. I've sort of mused about putting hot water out in the shop, and I've got 3-phase out there, and would've just ran the two elements between two different phases. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at July 27, 2018 11:39 PM (8O3HH) Heh. at my Arizona place, I rigged in a new 40 gallon electric water heater, did all the plumbing as close to code-perfect as I could, and the wiring, too, but could not get an electrician to come out and put a dual breaker in the panel to send it 240V, single phase. So, I put a regular 120 volt plug on the cable, and plugged 'er in to 120. It has worked perfectly that way ever since. Now, sooner or later, I will do it right, but the darn thing runs fine on 120, and gets from "cold" (well, "Phoenix cold", i.e. blood warm) to hot enough in about an hour. >> I was always told the bottom element heated the water and the top element kept it warm.
They're generally both the same wattage. Cold water is directed to the bottom, and the hot water is tapped off the top. The top thermostat is an SPDT thing (3-way). When it turns off, it switches over to the bottom element, which has its own single pole thermostat. When the top closes, the top element runs until it opens, then the bottom element can run. The idea is to heat the top first, then heat the bottom. During continuous draw down, you've only got the top element going. Run both of them at the same time, and you've got twice the heat going into the water. Gas water heaters can easily dump enough heat in that the draw-down characteristics are much better. What's the thing rated for? If it's rated 240V, I don't see the problem. The resistance of those things is fairly constant, IIRC, nichrome elements or whatever the material is. So, with constant R, you'll get only 1/4 of the power output at half-voltage. Now, you definitely do not want to run an element at twice rated voltage. If it's a 120V element (and they make those things, but the power is so low....), then running it at 2x voltage and 4x power, would not be a good idea. True, but fear of failure is, I suspect, more a male thing.
..... I've read studies that suggest the fear of failure is strongly associated with intelligence. The theory posits that intelligent people analyze things so deeply they anticipate the potentiality of things going awry. They also tend to overemphasize their own lack of experience. Essentially they know what they don't know and are hesitant to attempt new undertakings. Less intelligent people, the theory posits, tend to overestimate their own abilities, do not frequently identify potential problems and are more willing to try new things and figure things out as they go. Speaking of dissimilar metal corrosion, a good one was some jack-legging wiring at a church. It was 60Aish, 3-phase circuit, from a fused safety switch. The fuses were blowing. The thing wasn't pulling enough current to blow the fuses, but boy was it. It was getting very hot. The troule was someone had spliced aluminum to copper directly in a box near that switch. It had corroded and was heating. Copper carrying the heat back the switch, which was enough to melt the fuses. YOu can splice copper to aluminum. If there's no moisture around. And, some jack-legs truck can work, such as filling the splice with "No-AL-Ox", an anti-oxidant compound. But I wouldn't trust it. I think they make a wire nut dookickey system rated to splice Cu to AL,in the smaller wire sizes, and it does it this way essentially. Clean them both up and the thing is filled with some anti-oxidant compound that keeps water out. But I wouldn't trust it for a second. But they got it UL rated. It is not so much the cost of failure the first time, most people have issues with the fear of how failure will be perceived.
I have had this conversation with numerous other people in management and people I have been training for management, and one of these days, it is going to get me in trouble. Most people are not afraid of failing, but being seen to fail- to be thought of as an idiot. This means they do not put forth ideas, they do not ask questions they think everyone already knows the answer to. They do not try something they think might be beyond their reach. My analogy is this: sometimes, you have to slap your dick on the table no matter what happens and say 'Here it is! Go ahead, tell me what you think!'. Sure, someone might whack it, but you cannot be afraid to try. The annoying assholes are those who sit back, never venturing anything and just criticizing everyone else who actually tries. breaks a rusted bolt loose. I've never had one break loose yet without yelling swear words at it. Posted by: X-Ray at July 27, 2018 11:44 PM (xwvYG) If you have a nut that is really rusted on and the blaster and penetrating oil isn't working, take an angle grinder and take a good meaty corner off it. That should change the geometery of the stress on the nut, and it will probably heat it enough to make it expand enough to break free of the rust too. . . . . and if that doesn't work you have the angle grinder right there and handy to take the bolt off clean anyways. The earnest liberal who bought Chateau Merde from us didn't want to use a power mower - protect the polar bears, doncha know - and so set about in mid-summer wearing long pants and a jacket to mow the lawn with a reel mower after he'd let the lawn grown to about a foot high. (We live nearby, and heard this from the neighbors.) Now anyone who's ever used a reel mower knows how this turned out. He made it about six feet before saying "fuggit" and getting Juan to come in with a power mower. The funny part is that he started his mowing out in the front yard, in front of God and everybody, so his failure was manifest to God and everybody. Moral: if you're not sure what you're doing, perhaps start on a small scale where people can't see you. In his case, in the BACK yard, where you can realize you're over your head without losing man points. We all need humility, and "failing" in a repair is an opportunity to seek out and ask for some qualified help.
Taken to a higher level. My next door neighbor is a U.S. Coast Guard Master Electrician. He's damned good with the entire tool inventory, but I'm the far better craftsman and carpenter. I help him build his deck to code, plumb and true. He wires my garage for 220 V. The other USCG guy across the street? Shipfitter. His welds are not "nice, straight and neat". No. They're PERFECTLY NICE, PERFECTLY STRAIGHT, and PERFECTLY NEAT. Same with most any metal work he does. He's also a great mechanic, too. What he's bad at, is FINISHING a project. I've been of some help in that arena for him. And he's done some critical metal work for me, and making me a better welder, one project at a time. We all ask one another for help, as needed. It's not a "eating dirt" form of Humility. It's the Servant's Heart kind, much like Weird Dave so aptly illustrated in that ONT Content, oh, so very long ago. We're actually all humbly proud of our respective skills, and offer to help our neighbors, often. A brother sharpens a brother, like iron upon iron. Read that somewhere, I think. True, but fear of failure is, I suspect, more a male thing. Let's face
it, if you try and fail you lose man points. I think the first step to success is to have some idea what you're doing, and THEN to overcome fear of failure. Youtube can be invaluable to the former. How is this damned thing held together? After that, it's all downhill. Yeah, well, what pisses me off is when I do things right and they still don't work. I replaced the hot water heater on the RV yesterday, and I did everything right, and I STILL have a slight leak where the RV lines connect to the tank. I'm gonna have to pull the entire thing at least partway out to fix (all I'm going to have to do is re-wrap the threads with plumber's tape, but when the tank is in the fully installed position there just isn't enough slack in the lines to get the nut to "bite"-and you have to do it left handed, through a small access hole with your ass hanging out of the back compartment of the RV to boot-so you have to be able to wiggle the tank itself to make them line up). It's mounted with 24 screws, sealed up tight and waterproofed, gas and electric are all wired 5 X 5 (I used it yesterday, works great)...and I'm going to have to undo all of that just to redo the simplest part of the job. Posted by: Insomniac at July 28, 2018 12:09 AM (NWiLs) Perfection is unrealistic. Boo-boos are par for the course, until you learn how to do something, unless the boo-boos are catastrophic. Now anyone who's ever used a reel mower knows how this turned out.
But if you start in the front yard, by Christ, you'd better finish the front yard, even if you have a heart attack doing it. I think sports, if it has a valuable lasting lesson is useful in some regard, is good in that deadens you to failure. Success is measured in degrees of relative success in any given sequence of events.
A baseball player, at the highest level of success, will fail to achieve the desired outcome 2/3rds of the time and achieve the ultimate goal perhaps 5-6% of the time in each attempt at bat. And yet even with the propensity for failure they are still regarded as successful and are feared for their relative likelihood of achieving the desired outcome, The finest basketball players fail on half of their efforts shooting and fail at defending 40% of the time as well as losing the ball a number of times each game and fouling a number of times each game. Tennis players lose a number of points, games, sets, etc. There is failure built into the endeavors, however the relative successes are championed. It's hard to convey Russian swear words in comments due to the necessity of transliteration into the English alphabet and the lack of pronunciation guide (which English-speakers really need, because Russian really requires you to move your mouth differently). That said, here are a few classics: sooka : bitch peezda : pussy blyad : whore (but also a kind of all-purpose term of abuse) yob tebya : go fuck yourself/fuck you (long o) golooboi : slang for gay (literally light blue) Maybe you can find pronunciation videos for these on the Interwebz. Cutting wire to short is a hallmark of amateur electricians. It's some basic idea of "saving wire", I think. Now, when you do a panel, you want it neat, not a jumble of wires going willy-nilly, and do that, you want a lot of play to work with. You bend the wire around, neatly, and come in the sides to the breakers, and use wire-ties and shit like that. When you pull cable or THHN in a panel, take a loop all the way to the bottom or opposite end of where of it comes in, curve around and come back up or down the other side. That will give you more than enough to work with. Yes, you're going to waste some. BFD. And you can use that for little jumpers and pigtails for other things. In boxes, you want about 6". The length of your hand from middle fingertip to wrist will do roughly. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at July 28, 2018 12:43 AM (8O3HH) 479

Sometimes it helps to know someone who's fucked up so massively that you know you can never fuck up as big as they did, no matter how hard you try. One of my pals in high school was the total teen motorcycle geek, he had a Suzuku Enduro that he'd learned to pull wheelies on, and he was so proud of himself that he came up with this big plan to sneak his bike onto the practice track during our senior Homecoming Football game, and ride a wheelie all the way in front of the stands, and then escape through a gate he'd opened up. Well you can guess how this worked - just as he got in front of the middle part of the stand, maximum exposure, he flipped the thing over backwards, knocked himself out, and the bike bounced away and ran into a light pole. He woke up to the security team grabbing hold of him and the laughter of a couple thousand people, laughter that started again whenever he showed his face for the rest of that year. No matter how much I fuck up in public, I know that he will ALWAYS have me beat!!! Posted by: Tom Servo at July 28, 2018 12:49 AM (V2Yro) 501

Posted by: Insomniac Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It works. We've all got this internal critic, our own subconscious. When it gets out of hand, it tells us we're a failure, we're going to fail, don't even try, etc, etc. It can be reprogrammed. And that's what CBT does. It works. But it takes effort, and someone who knows what they're doing. The thing is, that internal subconscious critic is *learned*, and it can be unlearned. It's powerful. Your rational mind alone can't really combat it without help, and that's what CBT does. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at July 28, 2018 12:50 AM (8O3HH) 502
How the F**K can "rising sea level" nonsense be getting pushed in 2018 - and for near-term predictions? Nothing connected to the AGW industry/scam/lysenkoist cult has proven true, none of the models have worked, and there sure as hell is no measurable ocean rise going on since the industry was born.

488 474 I think sports, if it has a valuable lasting lesson is useful in some regard, is good in that deadens you to failure.
I don't think you could get a six-foot rise in sea level even if you completely denuded Greenland and Antarctica of ice. Sure they look big on a Mercator projection, but they are, together, tiny in comparison to the expanse of the oceans. And a lot of the ice on both land masses is already below sea level, so if it melts, it occupies something like 8/9 the volume of the ice.
And, then, you have isostasy to consider. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at July 28, 2018 01:00 AM (NV/E7) 534

While I agree and understand that there are endeavors that require success at a 100% degree of certainty, for the most part life does not operate in such a binary fashion.
Acceptance of an expectation of failure to some degree is a good thing. If I treat approaching women for a date like attempting to pilot a plane, I'm likely to spend the majority of my days fapping between comments on a message board due to analysis paralysis. Posted by: Adriane the Occupational Hazard Critic ... at July 28, 2018 01:00 AM (AoK0a) Hence my "prominent" assertion above. Plus, IMO, biology is a quasi-science. In a real science, hypotheses can be definitively falsified. Biology flunks this criterion, because apparently falsifying results are farted off as due to "biological variation." To a scientist, "biological variation" means "uncontrolled variables" which in turn means "shitty experimental design." Sound too harsh? Note that of (IIRC) 53 major publications in the biomedical field, only 6 could be reproduced by other labs. In all fairness, when it comes to piloting a plane, there are two extremes. You can stay up in the air all day on the one hand, or you can auger in nose-first on the other extreme. Lots of in between possibilities that allow you to put the plane on the ground and live to fly another day. The odds may be better than you would guess.

So, reel mowers. Has anybody ever willingly used one who did not work as a servant?
Or maybe they were invented for people living in row houses with postage stamp sized lawns. I could see that. Posted by: rickl at July 28, 2018 01:04 AM (sdi6R) Power reel mowers are no more difficult to use than self-propelled rotary power mowers, but make a much neater job if you have a fine lawn. If you have a postage-stamps lawn, but it's a fine lawn, and not a lumpy weed patch, a good quality hand-push reel mower can be a pleasure to use. Key words: "good quality" and set up properly. hard to find anyone anymore that can properly sharpen and set them, and has the equipment to do it. And you don't use a push mower to knock down six-inch tall grass; it's not meant for that. Knock a half-inch or so off twice a week. I own a Clemson E16 Junior push mower. They were the best you could get back in the 1950's, and I doubt any better have come along. Major castings were all magnesium, with a large-diameter steel tube as the front tie rod. All ball bearings, of course, and magnesium wheels, too. Machine was very light, but absolutely rigid, which is a necessary quality for an implement that works like a rotary scissors; the rotating reel must be set just so in relation to the fixed bed knife. But I don't mow my yard with that. Yard is too big, and is lumpy ex-pasture, to boot. I use a riding mower. But the Clemson is a cool artifact. USAF had us doing it with hand clippers. Single piece of steel, and the 180 degree "loop" of spring steel at the heel of the tool was the "power" you were pressing against to get the blades to close and shear.
The mind boggles that Drill Instructors were not summarily impaled by the twinned blades of such devices of sheer torture. (swidt?) The research, published in the scientific journal Aids, was sparked by anecdotal reports from Saskatchewan, where HIV rates in 2016 exceeded the national average tenfold in some areas.
"It was almost as if there might have been something particularly nastier about the virus." Posted by: SMOD at July 27, 2018 10:30 PM (e8kgV) ======== Now that's smart. Andrew Jackson destroyed the Indians virally by giving them infected blankets. Modern society destroys them virally by introducing them to sodomy.
