Trump Walkback: When I Said I Had No Reason to Think the Hackers Would Have Been Working for Russia, I Meant I Had No Reason to Think the Hackers Would Not Have Been Working for Russia

Ed Morrissey does a good job of rounding up the negative reaction to Trump's Helsinki remarks, including from people who are generally fair to Trump.

Is Trump telling the truth now about his would vs. wouldn't speak-o? I don't know.

As many people have noted -- Byron York, for example -- Trump is loathe to admit the existence of Russian meddling because:

1, it taints an election victory that he's justly proud of, and

2, because he suspects -- not without reason-- that the whole Russia Narrative was cooked up by Hillary Clinton and Hillary partisans in the leftwing media and then seized upon by the deranged NeverTrump liberal Republican wing. He sees admitting Russian meddling as a half-step towards confirming the alleged Russian collusion the media and Democrats and NeverTrumpers are foaming about, and tends to claim both premises are false, instead of conceding that one is true while remaining firm that the other is false.

Mollie Hemingway put it well on Special Report last night: While Trump should be smarter about separating out the "Russian meddling" story from the "Russian collusion" allegation, so should Trump's critics, who routinely, and sometimes probably deliberately, conflate the two, acting as if proof of the former is also proof of the latter.

An editor at The Atlantic, for example, just tweeted out last week that the indictment against 12 Russian nationals for hacking Jon Podesta's email account is, by some alchemy he doesn't explain, also proof of Russian collusion.

Here's a "staff writer" at The Atlantic doing precisely that --

The cucks' favorite bull also seems fond of conflating Russian meddling with Russian collusion, pretending that Trump calling one a "witch hunt" must naturally mean the other is a "witch hunt" too:

Here's an Atlantic editor doing precisely what Hemingway is talking about -- taking an indictment of a Russian national who attempted to influence the NRA as evidence that the NRA is a Russian front group:

The NRA is not also indicted, and in fact, the indictment contains nothing to besmirch the NRA at all. This is just The Atlantic doing the selfsame wishcasting and cultish conspiracy theorizing they accuse their opponents of doing.

A media which is ever-vigilant for Trump's false assumptions and conspiracy theories seems too overworked by those exertions to spend a single second patrolling their own cultish beliefs for any mental errors of their own.

27 Speaking for myself, and not for Trump...

First we surrendered China and North Korea to Russia.

Then we surrendered Cuba to Russia. Then we rounded up a decent subset of the anti-Castro resistance and set them up to be massacred at the Bay of Pigs.

Then we surrendered a huge chunk of SE Asia to the Russians and Chinese (who by now had started their own mob family). Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.

We inexplicably got Eastern Europe back, but Clinton made sure they had no nuclear weapons. And made sure North Korea would eventually get them.

Then Bush came along. He helped fail-to-contest the Russian/Chinese subversion, conquest-by-local-proxy (it's what they do), and impoverishment of Venezuela.

Finally Obama came along, chose the anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising to announce the cancellation of missile defense for Poland, then gave the Syrian resistance to Assad the same treatment we earlier gave the rebels against Castro. Then he gave some hundred-and-fifty-billion-dollars to Iran, much of which went to.... Russia, which suddenly has the money to do a decent bombing campaign in Syria, driving the refugees to Western Europe so they can subvert it.

Oh, and on top of everything else: the last three Presidents before this one surrendered our industrial base to Russian-inspired communist totalitarians who own China.

Now everyone who was in on that long series of sales of whole and partially-burnt human flesh to Russians and Chinese are wanting to make some accusations about collusion.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?

"Illegitimate?" Trump knew his daddy, and grew up with him, and was not conceived on a 17 year old starry-eyed roundheels commie slut who was then abandoned by her bigamist "husband," never to be seen again.

Which is more than Trump's predecessor can say.

91 I've wanted to know the full story behind the Bay of Pigs for a long damn time.

CIA couldn't really have been so stupid as to think the plan as executed was going to depose Castro, right?

So did they have a different goal? If so, what?

Did the execution differ significantly from the plan? If so, how?

The plan as conceived had air support, which was withdrawn at the last minute by President Kennedy in an act of utter fecklessness. The force was shot to pieces by Castro, with the aid of Russian-supplied trainer aircraft, in full view of an American carrier force that was just offshore.

One guy in a WW2 era bomber disobeyed orders and took off and flew an air support mission anyway and was shot down. He got traded for someone else a couple days later. The rest of Cuba never got traded for anyone, although some managed to emigrate later.

97 >>it taints an election victory that he's justly proud of

I think this is partially correct (and obvious) but I think the whole answer is more complicated.

Trump is a businessman and only secondarily a politician. He is trying to accomplish a pretty bold foreign policy agenda and he is going about it in a way that flies in the face of the foreign policy of both Democrats and Republicans for decades. He's doing it from the perspective of a businessman.

Take a look at what he is doing in North Korea. He is not only engaging Kim directly, something that has been anathema to our foreign policy "experts" on both sides of the aisle forever but he has been complimenting Kim and giving him a positive path forward whenever he takes a step in the right direction. Remember the video he had produced showing Kim what NK could be if he played nice?

And all of that is being made possible by Trump's aggressive sanctions policy against China. North Korea is nothing without China and Trump has been playing them in the background also with a dose of carrots and sticks, most notably the sanctions which threaten China's stability in the long run.

Same with Putin. You want to solve Syria you go through Moscow. Same with Iran. Same with a host of smaller skirmishes around the globe. And you solve Russia not by threatening war with them but showing them an alternative future that they could have if they stop being a destabilizing force around the world. And the one thing you don't do with someone you are trying to do a deal with is publicly humiliate them.

No doubt Trump is sick and tired of having his legitimacy questioned. But he is also trying to solve things in a way that DC does not understand because it is full of politicians most of whom have never done dick in the business world and almost none in the international business world. Trump understands what makes geopolitical foes like China and Russia tick and it isn't press conferences or political statements.

It's the economy stupid.

You have to wonder how much of that impulsive wild man loose cannon persona is real and how much is his shtick. Is he wild in the streets and just has had an amazing run of luck, or is he doing a rope-a-dope, or as I suspect, some of each, but with more of the latter than of the former.

No ... that was Hillary ... protected traitor ...

Fusion GPS hired Christopher Steele/Haklyut (a British citizen/firm who by law cannot receive campaign money, but did via the cut-out law firm Perkins Coie) to find dirt on Trump. Steele then took the illegal campaign money and paid Russian intelligence agents for Trump/Trump campaign dirt. This is also illegal.

The FBI/CIA/DoJ then received this dirt via artiface on the part of Fusion GPS and proceeded to ignore the obvious crimes committed by the lot of the Dems involved and decided this was worthy of a counter-intel investigation against the VICTIM of the multitude of criminal activity by the left.

In the beginning, as each little nugget of "info" came out, it was reported breathlessly by the media. Flynn's phone call - routine in nature - was "ah ha, see !!!" and then Jared's hotel meeting with the Russian chic "ah ha, see !!!" and so on. They The MSM/Dems (BIRM), made the most critical error of salesmanship you can make: They over promised and under delivered.

Once you cross that rubicon, you cannot get back customer support. At this point, Mueller only has one card to play for his audience: That is subpoena the president. It's a perjury trap. But if Trump says no, "ah ha, see !!"

A report just before the mid-terms, with all kinds of dots, yes, lots of dots but no connecting will be breathlessly reported by the media. But in the end, it will be seen as what it is: A last gasp - that will not effect the election of any one rep or senator.

"A TV adaptation of Batwoman is to become the first live-action superhero series with an openly gay lead character.

The show is being developed for the US channel, the CW, adding to the network's collection of shows based on DC comics characters."

The article then continues with this zinger:

"Batwoman was introduced in the 1950s as a love interest for Batman to dispel rumours of his own homosexuality."

Whaaaaat? Are they repeating some Gender Studies master's thesis ridiculosity as historical fact now?

With the internet, talk radio, and alternate news sources, they can only censor their LIV's but cannot hide real information from the rest of us. Then we feed it back into their echo chambers and they melt or change the topic.

I'm actually more optimistic for November than I was even a few months ago. Mainly the Left continues to be stupid and melt down, and cannot come up with a story that sticks against Trump for more than 3 days.

216 Trump's instincts have been uncanny, so his walk back probably was the right thing to do (some of his more Establishment IC, Coats looms large, likely threatened to resign). Still, a quibble with the York/Hemmingway line of analysis. Having Trump publicly buy into the Russian meddling narrative has two purposes. The first, obviously, is/was to make it look like he conspired with the Russians as grounds to remove him. The second, let's call it the "insurance policy," was to explain away the FBI/DOJ's Stasi-like mucking around in our supposedly democratic election.

You know, "even President Trump understands why we . It was due to the Russian interference in the elections, which he has acknowledged."

Mueller's indictments of the dozen Russians immediately before the summit, and his indictment of the NRA supporter afterwards, also was two-fold. The first prong was an attempted foreign policy coup, which apparently failed, and the second was to bolster the meddling narrative. I've assumed Mueller will continue his witch hunt until after the midterms to give a possible impeachment report, and still do so, but he's also laying the groundwork to justify the police state antics.

No sale, motherfucker. We don't know how it will end but we'll never trust you and your stormtroopers again. Ever.

Trump didn't do what he did today lightly, and expect harsh repercussions from him when he gets the opportunity. This will end, one way or another.

I'm not so sure. I suspect that the Reds knew that there was nothing there, but they hoped they could goad Trump into firing Mewler so they could make a BFD out of that. They've probably got the signs printed and op-eds already written, just waiting for that to happen.

Meanwhile, Trump has not risen to the bait, and increasingly Mewler is starting to look like that head of lettuce that got stuck in the back of the refrigerator for six months.

If this continues, eventually Mewler will have to pull his own rip cord, which will destroy the entire operation.

279 What will the NeverTrumpers say when they find out their beloved deep state hates the second amendment and wants to confiscate guns?

Just like the Supreme Court, they don't seem to care. I know they give the Jonah Goldberg boiler plate response, blah, blah. But what really gets them angry, excited, is:

1. When people attack globalism and get too nationalistic.
2. When people want restrictions on immigration.
3. When people support tariffs, especially on the EU and China.
5. When people don't attack Russia with enough gusto.
6. When people want to raise taxes.

No. 6 is the only one the Republican base and the NeverTrump elite get angry about. Outside of that do they have anything in common?

Hence the problem: They don't understand the base of their own political party, or worse do and use the base for their own desires. Trump ended that, and that has made them angry. They don't understand that Trump could put a tinfoil hat on his head and he would still be supported by the base as long as he supports the things they want. It is not a cult of personality, but real political reasons.

For example: Fox news keeps bringing up Syria. How many voters, not just in the GOP, really care about Syria? I mean they may not want Russia and Iran there (more the later probably bugs them), but compared to immigration, leftist violence, lawlessness, fear of losing constitutional rights, higher paying jobs, not getting screwed in trade with China / EU, etc. probably is more important. With that mind Syria is low on the "I am angry list". Yet NeverTrumpers act like Syria is the freaking Fulda Gap!

he doesn't suspect this .. he KNOWS this, unless he really did collude (not a crime) with the Russians ... to buy a meaningless FB ad.

Rosenstein called a press conference to trample on Trump's visit with the Queen ... Rosie is doing anti-Trump agitprop. Then the indictments of Russians, which could have been done ... months ago. All timed to attack the president doing his job ... active sedition by Rosie/Mueller.

So a little push back by Trump ... playing the headline, with a meaningless "I misspoke" later. It called attention to the real issue, not Trump avoiding war with Russia, but our IC (Rosie/Mueller/Brennan/etc) are almost calling for an open coup and/or war with Russia ... THAT is the real treason, the real coup.

And since Trump made them come out and rise up against POTUS, even media is calling for War and a Coup. No sneaky FISC court lies to frame anyone, they are openly revealing their own sedition. DeepState demands to run foreign policy, and serve the globalists ... everyone is noticing. NSA has all the evidence.

393 I wouldn't be too critical of the President on this point, since in its own way its a sleight of hand to get him to be party to the 'Look Russia Won Trump the Election' crowd.

Also I recall Ace himself being very concerned that the President was 'boxed into signing the Russian Sanctions' regarding this very point.

When the final word is written on this subject, we are likely to learn, no Russia didn't have anything to with this and it was Seth Rich who handed Podesta's emails to Wikileaks.

Wait is Wikileaks still what is meant when people exclaim 'Russia hacked the Election'? Or are they talking about the even less meaningful 'Russia bots'? Hard to keep up.

394 Pea brains. The way Mueller has done this proves just the opposite. You can't help an audience of low intelligence.

395 I only hope that some of the death and destruction our enemies mean for us ends up taking out all of these lying bastards and their families.

396 How monumentally stupid does one have to be to even think that the NRA is bunch of Rooskie Spies?

Unless we're talking the National Recovery Administration.

397 Eh. Trump handled it badly, had the self-reflection sufficient to see that he handled it badly, stepped back and retreated from an untenable position. It was the smart thing to do.

He's a businessman and a businessman who wants to do well cuts his losses when a gamble goes sour.

He's shown once again how batshit crazy the left is and with a little political jiujitsu he can turn a misstep into a net gain just on the propaganda front.

Oh, and he needs to fire Rosenstein at the first possible moment, no matter what the hell Sessions thinks.

398 I think Trump was in a position where there wasn't really a good answer for him to give. He's trying to make some diplomatic ground with Putin, and then some snotty fake news artist comes right out and asks him to denounce either Putin or the US spy community as liars.

Maybe a smarter answer would've been something like, "Well, you know, lots of countries try to meddle with our elections. I'm not interested in pointing fingers, here. At any rate, I'm sure the real impact is minimal, and the important thing is that we work to keep it that way, as I trust the Obama administration did."

I'm not sure if that's even a good answer, really, and at any rate I probably wouldn't have thought of it on the spot, anyway.

399 I've forgiven my mother for becoming a hopeless alcoholic and turning her back on her family when I was five years old. I guess I can forgive President Trump for backtracking on this.
But I wish he had weathered the shitstorm instead.

400 And I'm getting sick and fucking tired of the Russian's meddled in the election bullshit.

There has been no evidence presented that shows that they hacked anything, widely disseminated any propaganda or "fake news" during the primaries or the campaign, infiltrated any campaign or organization or pretty much did anything of real substance.

It's a lie.
A BIG FAT LIE!
And I am having none of it.

Show me an ad!!!
I have literally seen noone show a specific ad that the Russians supposedly ran.

Show me the evidence of a hack?
I looked at both intel report, I've read the idiotic Senate Intel Committee report, I've looked at the CSV metadata supporting file, there is not a single shred of credible evidence presented in any of these reports and documents only wild assertion, appeals to authority and hey we would love to show you the hard eveidence but to do so would reveal sources and methods, you wouldn't want us to reveal sources and methods would you?

Show me the evidence of inflirtration?
Again no evidence has been shown.

There is however ample, compelling and indisputable direct and circumstantial evidence of collusion and criminality on the part of the DOJ/FBI/STATE/DEMOCRATS/HILLARY/MSM to exonerate Hillary Clinton and Destroy the Trump Campaign and Presidency.

I am under the firm belief that if Trump did not win the election he would be in jail as we speak, as President Hillary Clinton's fully weaponized and operation LE and IC apparatus would have brought the hammer down on Trump, his family and satellites.

Jeff Sessions is a disgrace and the GOP is a useless pile of dogshit.
