Democrats Announce Their Reasons for Leaving the Democrat Party with the "#WalkAway" Hashtag
Scott Adams talked about this on his Periscope video today. He made this point: This might be something important ("something that could dent the universe," as he put it) because people aren't citing policy reasons for their #WalkAway from the Democrat Party.
He believes (as I do) that logic is a slave of the emotions, and what we call "logical analysis" is really just the part of the brain that thinks it's in charge making up a post-facto justification to explain what has already been decided by the emotional, primal part of the brain.
Anyway, he thinks it's important that rather than citing policy reasons or logical stuff like that as the reason for the #WalkAway from the Democrat party, people are citing the feeling that the Democrat party is manipulating them with fake, ginned-up fear.
That kind of thing runs deeper than logic, the feeling that someone is conning you.
So who knows, maybe this is something.
Juan Williams is now claiming that it is "being reported" that ICE is running "black sites."
Suspend him.
This bit of #FakeNews comes, it seems, courtesy of the Socialist/Democrat loony-tunes candidate that just won against Crowley:
Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claimed on Wednesday that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is running "black sites" at the border. During an interview on CNN's "Newsroom" with Poppy Harlow, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez explained the difficultly that reporters and members of Congress have gaining access to some child-holding facilities, creating a "secretive nature" that justified the term. She said the agency has extrajudicial structure "baked in," which allows them to “get away” with running these sites.She offered no evidence for this, because she's making it up and also insane. Juan Williams likewise offered no evidence for this, or that there were "investigations" into it, apart from this radical leftist rabble-rouser's own personal "investigation." Fox News previously suspended Andrew Napolitano (I won't call him "judge;" he's a commentator) for making the unsubstantiated claim that British spy agencies eavesdropped on Trump. Axios highlights the "Republicans" part of the finding but ignores that fact that Independents think the media deliberately makes up #FakeNews at almost the same percentage as Republicans. Here's an example of why America believes the media makes up news: This NBC story claiming that Trump began a "pilot program" for separating children from illegal immigrant parents in... 2016. I sort of think someone else was president in 2016. But "Trump continued program started by Obama" doesn't get as many Outrage Clicks. So they just lied.

No. Unless there's some back up evidence of this, I disagree. Sure, there are incidences of this, but usually when people are trying to rationalize behavior.
I think people are way too driven by emotion and knee jerk reactions and don't use logic and their pre-frontal cortex enough. They don't slow down and THINK.
Maybe you 2 have more to bolster this theory, b/c it seems an oversimplification and unstudied.
As for the walk-away, that is what happens when people finally really something is wrong and their reality isn't matching experiences. Basically, when they realize they are being gaslighted or manipulated. It happens in relationships, but it also happens in organizations.
As for the media, it has become so outlandish at this point, just calling it unhinged and fake news doesn't do it justice.
The signs of a nervous breakdown are as visible in the media as in the Resistance.
I was talking to the chief investigator from a police station today about tomorrow's planned protests, and I made him laugh with some things I said. Which made me feel good. It wasn't anything witty, just mostly stuff I say on here.
In the beginning the convo was very serious and I got the feeling they are under a ton of pressure. So to make him laugh felt good. He thanked me too, so there's that.

I would say the polls for them are far worse than the media is letting on. My guess is that they have completely cratered and that sane voters are stepping away from them without making any noise about it in case they incur the wrath such as that directed at Republicans.

Yep. OSPIRG came to my door whining about it. When I pointed out that one of the last things Clinton did before leaving office was to sign an executive order reducing the acceptable amount to 1/100th of what it previously was set by the EPA and it was perfectly safe at those previous levels, the heaving she-beast was baffled and silent as I closed the door.
I'm not kidding here. I think OSPIRG went out of its way to hunt down and recruit the most terrifying, stinking, bloated, warty, hideous women they could find. The kind of woman that would cause humanity to die out if they were your last choice on earth. I try not to mock the appearance of people since they usually can do little about it but... these people were genetic monstrosities. I cannot figure out where they found these people or how they figured this was going to help their fundraising cause.

I always thought the song was intended to emphasize the humanity of Jesus, and while I appreciate Mary in glory as an intercessor. I don't think she was omniscient-so yes, while the angel says Jesus is God's son, I don't think it follows that Mary knew that he would walk on water and give sight to a blind man-until it happened, and I hope that she didn't know that he would die a tortuous death while she was kissing baby Jesus.

Anyway, today was the three-month follow-up, and he found a bit of bleeding around the repaired retina. Within less than two hours, he'd had the problem imaged and lasered the bleeding closed.
Competent, and a nice man, too -- he welcomes a patient's spouse, and seems to like having us there. Kinda hard to understand at times because he talks so fast, but other than that, exactly the kind of expert doctor you'd want to have.

Two things wrong with this:
1. What Ace and Adams are really saying is not the Humean view "that logic is a slave of the emotions". That view entails merely that our emotions determine our goals, albeit irrationally. But reason remains perfectly untouched in the place still accorded to it; the area of means.
What A&A have explicitly said (Ace does above) is that even the latter role is in fact a post hoc rationalization of what has been decided wholly emotionally. In other words, that rationality is really just an illusion.
What this means is that, for instance, truth and falsehood do not really contrast, nor do right and wrong. Reality itself is nothing but a subjective preference. Truth, though defined usually as "what works" simply cannot be more than "what I like", as "working" is itself just another irrational preference.
Welcome to Postmodern NeoMarxism, Ace.
2. This also brings up another problem. People here very often refer to others who self-identify as on the right, as traitors, on the grounds that they do not support positions to which they never pledged themselves. Leaving aside the question of whether the charge of treason has any meaning on the above analysis (it doesn't), where does that leave us? Almost everyone on the right disagrees with almost everyone else. Thumb through Kirk's Conservative Mind if you doubt me - and Kirk played down the contrasts. What this leads to is a political coalition which has a half life measured in milliseconds.
Of course, in reality most people who espouse such BS don't act as if they did; e.g., Ace's willingness to go along with prolifers, or my acceptance of tariffs as a strategic lever. But those stances are not themselves defensible from the first position (that I discuss in #1 above.)
All this is just a result of embracing a position prematuirely, or because it FEELS right. Sort of the way Bill Kristol does.

This I agree with, when we analyze or react to things, we can start with emotion, because its our first response to anything: feelings, then ideas analyze, and hopefully supercede emotions.
Emotions are like anything else, they have to be trained and informed. This is the flaw of the modern snowflake, because they've never trained their emotions, they've simply allowed them to run free without shaping or learning. Failure, loss, pain, negative circumstance and such all help us to learn to shape and train our emotions to match reality and what we know to be true. Without that, we're simply animals going where our basest urges lead us, because we'll never reason or consider what happens.
The rationality is there, its just ignored for what we feel. When reason clashes with emotion -- what we know vs what we feel -- it is painful and frightening until we learn how to control that. They never did. So they cannot handle truth or reality.

For years my friend has told me the SCOTUS would end abortion. For years I've been trying to get her to lower her expectations by explaining the most that will happen is it will be thrown back to the states to decide. Her Pastor or something tells her differently. I think there will be a lot of disappointed people.

These people just do not understand how any of this works.
At the worst Roe v Wade gets struck down and abortion goes back to it's status before Roe.
States decide the parameters of when and how abortion services can be performed.
Some states will heavily restrict it, some states will somewhat restrict it, some states will let their freak flags fly and allow abortions on demand up to the moment of birth.
This idea that overturning Roe ends abortion's is bullshit.

Since I don't actually work in the office, I get most of the behind-the-scenes info second-hand. For example, right now. I'm overhearing a co-worker in a conversation with a company owner, and it's completely insane.
Without revealing too much as to the nature of the business: The SJW employees are now demanding that the company have "racial balance" and "diversity" in its clients -- that is to say, customers. They think that too many of our business-customers are owned by whites and men. Not acceptable! We need -- nay, demand -- more dusky races and vagina-owners!
Problem is, of course, one doesn't have control over who walks through the door of your business. And if you're barely staying afloat, you take anyone you can get.
But no: The SJWs are DEMANDING that the company now turn away white men. Furthermore, the company must expend all its efforts courting blacks and women. Even though there are very few black-and-women-owned businesses in this field from which to choose.
First of all, turning away customers based on race is illegal and unconstitutional.
Second of all, the company will go under and everyone will become unemployed if we start turning away most of our customers.
Third of all, these SJWs have absolutely no social or corporate standing to even make these demands in the first place. They're nobodies in the company structure. Replaceable.
But they sense blood in the water: They know that the owner is weak-willed and passive and eager to please. But the more she caves in to them, the more they demand.
The discussion I'm now overhearing has now turned to what would happen - - what would really happen, with banks and real estate and S-corps and so forth -- if the company went under. So it's no longer inconceivable.
I'm a freelance consultant, so I can just go my merry way, but damn, this is getting really really ugly. And there's no end in sight.

Let's say it's a good bet that some military support beyond Nat. Guard, and beyond facilities for detainees (already happening, per Trump EO last week), is likely.

As I said up above, it's stupid and annoying that the first stanza of the lyrics is banned in post-war Germany (they use the second now). "Deutschland uber Alles" referred, of course, to the idea of a Germany over principalities and federations of small states - to 19th century German unification. Not Germany over other, non-Germanic countries. Even the geographic elements in the first stanza are kind of a clue on that.

Why, yes I did. That was the Law of the Land for about 40 years, like it or not. SCOTUS certainly has the power and did rule it Unconstitutional yesterday. As of yesterday. Unless I missed something in the Janus language from the Court, I recall nothing about them stating anything that would give the plaintiffs retroactive relief.
It may wind up that way after future cases are decided, but I'm not seeing it now.

Its like when a cop is discovered to be corrupt, now all the cases he's been in are reexamined in the light of his corruption. Its not ex post facto to sue someone for unconstitutional seizure of funds in the past.

Also, hard to see why SCOTUS would issue instructions to inferior courts on this particular issue, pertinent to pending cases, if there were not going to be an effect.

No dispute with either of those comments. However, what that would do to our war fighting capability is what I think is bad.
First, there is a lot of work that needs to be done relearning skills that have atrophied from a decade plus in the sandbox. Lot of mid-grade leaders who have never trained for high-intensity ops.
Second, putting warfighters on border duty will tick professionals off. Some will decide it's time to leave, to the detriment of the force. Saw that in the 90's (Bosnia peacekeeping).

I guess the problem I really see with this is the possible enormity of such a settlement and its impact after 40 years. Maybe that would have been a better way to state it. Mind you, I am not a Union member or supporter.
I just don't see SCOTUS allowing most Unions to be bankrupted, without massive legal battles and decades of Court challenges.

Rhomboid, I dunno if you're still watching this thread, but the CA law SB866 was basically drafted by the public employee unions, who pretty much own the legislature, in anticipation of a decision for the Janus plaintiffs. It's insane how union-slanted it is:
1) It makes the unions the sole custodian of written consent forms for dues and fee deductions. The employer agencies have to take the unions' word for it that the list of consenting employees they provide is correct, and the union doesn't have to provide copies of the consent forms to the employer unless the employee disputes it.
2) It changes the former law that made revocations of union membership effective the next pay period, to instead make them effective according to the terms of the membership sign-up -- so if the sign-up says that you can only revoke it one day a year, and only if there happens to be a lunar eclipse that day, then tough shit. Unions are already claiming the new law affirms that their one-year dues commitment is valid.
3) It adds to another new law that became effective in January, which forbids employers from "deterring or discouraging" union membership to employees, to also make the prohibition applicable to applicants.
4) It enacts a new requirement that if the employer plans any "mass communication" to employees or applicants, concerning their rights to join or refrain from joining a union, the employer must first show it to the union and "meet & confer" about its contents. If they can't agree and the employer decides to send out the communication anyway, then it also has to include a communication from the union at the same time.
5) Unions already have a right to attend new employee orientations. The new law makes the date, time, and location of new employee orientations confidential, so the employer can't disclose that information to, e.g., anti-union organizations.
There are a couple other pieces to it that I can't recall off the top of my head, but those are the main ones.
