Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | #MuhPrinciples: NeverTrumpers Decide It's Now Not About the Crime, It's About the SexNeverTrumpers, as a group, maintained, like most Republicans, that Clinton's sexual dalliances were not the serious problem -- not commendable behavior, to be sure ("simply reprehensible," as Democrats looking for a half-in-half-out position would bleat), but also not really the concern of the public, at least not in any official sense. Personally, I wasn't lying when I maintained that. I did not care that Clinton had an affair with Monica Lewinsky, whether in the Oval Office or not; I knew about his history from The New Republic, which supported him but frequently alluded to the almost-certainly-true rumors of rampant infidelity in his past. What bothered me was the crime -- he lied to a federal judge when he could easily just settle without admitting anything, just saying "I'm settling so I can focus on the job the American people elected me to do." Instead, he lied. Under oath. The Chief Law Enforcement officer of the United States lied under oath. NeverTrumpers surely echoed this "It's not the sex, it's the perjury" sentiment. But now #MuhPrinciples demand a reversal.

The thing Bill Clinton was hounddogged for happened while he was in office--in fact while he was IN the office. That's not the same thing as a consensual affair that occurred in the past, if that's what actually happened with Miss Daniels. However, I will fess up to some considerable hypocrisy. I am willing to put up with The Donald's infidelities because he's a fighter, which is something I want to see, and because the alternative is unthinkable. I'll admit this much, I regret investing so heavily into the "character matters!" Clinton wars. I've come to the conclusion character just really doesn't matter in politics unless it interferes with your ability to win.
And I also think it was incredibly stupid "we" impeached Bill Clinton over what he said in a civil suit regarding sexual harassment. I certainly know if Trump lied under oath about Stormy Daniels, I don't think it would warrant removal from office. So I'm willing to admit to the charge that I'm a hypocrite for holding Trump to a different standard. So sue me. If Democrats had gone along with removal of Bill Clinton, I might have an ounce of shame over the flip flop. Posted by: Maritime at May 03, 2018 04:41 PM (lKmt3) 60

I am upset that Trump lied, but Ms. Daniels was no doubt paid for her services at the time of the sexual encounter.
I hope he sues the hell out of her for breach of contract. She was paid later (don't know when) to keep her mouth shut. The fact that this happened ten years ago has me shrugging my shoulders. He was a private citizen at the time, so it's none of my business. What really upsets me is the Feds tapping Cohen's phones and offices. If they were going on the assumption that this Michael Cohen was the one who travelled to Prague (as part of the Russian [non]collusion matter), then I would assume that everything that followed that flawed reasoning would be inadmissable. Another loud bang in the continuous drumbeat of how bad Trump really is, brought to you by the Democrat Press Machine. Owned by Soros (TM)
The press and the Dems (but I repeat myself) go on and on with their foul screeching about the man they could not defeat by previously proven means (Romney, and on the state level, Ted Stevens) so they just continue to whore out what little reputation they had left. What I find fascinating is the popularity of Donald Trump is as high as ever! It shows me that the liars in the press and their human tools like Eric Swallowwell and Adam Schiftt are failing to connect with those who watch the news less than most of the Horde. The press senses this and has turned it to overdrive, with their new star, the Whore's Attorney becoming the newest star. The Whore's Attorney redefines sleaze. Yet no actual crimes can be identified, much less proven. How long will the DemoPress and their human tools in Congress be able to keep this sham going? ace, I see no reason to stipulate that Trump is lying over this thing. The underlying thing, I mean. But I haven't followed it closely. My impression is it's a he said/she said, with all the signs of a typical shakedown of a wealthy target.
But I'm really baffled by the statement that Trump had no knowledge of policy. He was mostly elected because he committed himself to specific policies, all of which represented a big change. And so far he has actually worked to fulfill his campaign pledges more than any president in living memory (save one, but that's too annoying to go back over). Stifling over-regulation. Taxes. Mass, disastrous lawlessness on immigration/border security. Opioid crisis. Human trafficking. Trade deals. Feckless foreign policy of the Obama idiots. On each one, Trump ran on very specific approaches, all of which he has implemented, or tried to implement. Some of these people don't care, or don't understand these policy shifts, but they're the lightweights, not Trump. Only "flaws" - of consequence - I can see so far is not firing Sessions when it was clear he was damaged goods (self-damaged, and even then not really, but whatever), and not realizing much earlier (have he and his legislative people *yet* realized?) that he had to run against the GOP, gut and change the GOP, quickly, if he is to have much real impact. As Adirondack Patriot notes, he's been under an NDA, which would explain evasions. Trump's "flaws", whatever they are (list appreciated), appear to be irrelevant to his duties. Clinton's flaws, both of character and intellect, were integral to his disastrous unfitness for office, which had serious concrete consequences for the country and the world, including body counts.

On one corner we have a known prostitute (it's legal if you film it apparently) who broke a non-disclosure agreement about alleged carnal excursions (aka - shut up go away money) which appears suspiciously like a shakedown
vs It really doesn't matter who is in the other corner. Contestant number one is objectively a dishonest money grubbing whore. Anyone who gives the claims credibility to be further investigated is dishonest. It's not slut shaming. It is the dishonest money grubbing. Posted by: Burnt Toast at May 03, 2018 04:56 PM (Eu5eZ) 188

What I love is watching Stephen Hayes and all the NeverTrumpers watch Stormy Davis extort money from Trump in real time, and they're cheering her on. Stephen Hayes is actually on the side of a criminal over the president. That's how fucking nuts he is.
I call her an extortionist because she admits soliciting at least one payment from Trump to stay silent and any reasonable person would admit she is only going public now because she thinks she was underpaid. My favorite part of the Trump candidacy (and Presidency) is that Trump is over 35, is a natural-born citizen, has lived in the United States for at least fourteen years, and that is all the qualification he needed to become POTUS. I really like that we got a POTUS with barebones qualifications. I really didn't like this thing that arose over time requiring POTUSes to be high-priests of the beltway insider club, and I'm really glad Trump blew that all up. If you're unwilling to let something go that happened in the past, and see the good in someone changing for the better, I really don't think you're a very good person yourself. I mean for crying out loud, that long ago the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was hot and exciting, Daniel Craig had just become James Bond, Will and Grace was still on the air, Dr Who had just rebooted, Anna Nicole Smith and Merv Griffin were still alive, and Daniel Powter had a big hit with "Bad Day." Stifling over-regulation. Taxes. Mass, disastrous lawlessness on immigration/border security.
____________________ Speaking of which, it's being reported that there were 39,000 apprehensions of illegals on the southern border in April. Given that BP only catches a small fraction of those who cross illegally, that means that hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens made it across the border undetected last month. That's just one month. There is currently a backlog of over 1 million cases pending in U.S. immigration courts. It was recently reported that each "refugee" in the U.S. costs U.S. taxpayers over $40,000 a year, which is more than the average American family earns in a year. Also, more than 50% of immigrants, both legal and illegal, are receiving at least one form of federal welfare. We have $21 trillion in public debt, which we are now trying to finance by issuing 2-month T bills. Once interest rates get back to a more normal 3% rate, we will be spending more on servicing our massive debt than we spend on defense. In fact, interest payments on our debt will become our third largest government expense, after SS and Medicare. Despite our dire economic straits, our government continues to allow hundreds of thousands of third-world poor to swarm across our borders every month and many of them will seek, and be granted, refugee status here. But yeah, the most important issue facing our nation right now is whether or not Donald Trump paid some skanky whore to keep her mouth shut about having had sex with him over a decade ago. Guy Benson has the intellectual candle-power of a high school newspaper editor. Which makes him a heavyweight in the "conservative" pundit community, and a veritable J.S. Mill in the wider punditocracy.
Last time I was exposed to his deep thoughts, several years ago, he beclowned himself (and the quote is memorable) by saying he was "not one who pounds the table over illegal immigration". Hilarious! "Free trade absolutists are very sympathetic to, if not outright supportive of, the idea that just as goods should be free to cross borders unimpeded, so too should labor."
Strongly disagree. Business interests are sympathetic to both, because they are clear, immediate beneficiaries of both. Libertarians are sympathetic to both, because they are both consistent with their ideology. Free trade and unrestricted movement of labor create very different economic outcomes. Trade is inherently positive, or at the very least neutral, to each party participating in the transaction. Unrestricted movement of labor results in wages averaging out between two populations. When dealing with two very disparate economies, one set of workers' gains quite directly comes at the expense of the other. Posted by: Sjg at May 03, 2018 05:16 PM (gDSJf) 318

Yes, Trump is flawed and as you noted most of us knew that. But he was also the best choice, and the man has done more for us in 16 months than some of these so called compassionate conservatives did in 8 years. Notwithstanding any of that, what's happening now is a subversion of our government. Unelected bureaucrats are undermining our government and trying to bring down the president. One might want to believe a "conservative" would not only oppose that subversion, but start gathering up rope and buildings by a gallows. What are the so called never trumpers doing? I think there is an aspect that Ace didn't cover. I'm guessing some NT think of Republicanism as a brand with an image. They work really hard to buff and polish the brand with an image they would like to be associated with. They defend it from attacks from the other side. Then along comes a man who doesn't really fit the brand, and steals it while confirming some of the flaws the opponents lobbed (in their minds). When that was threatened, they would rather keep the image intact than win. I guess they think it would be a long-game win.
Most of us think of politics as a big compromise, and keep some distance between our person and the party, or at least understand there are different legs on the party stool, but I'm not sure the NT do. Posted by: goodluckduck at May 03, 2018 05:36 PM (rwaEp) 427

Sorry if I'm in "a mood" when I see a woman who has been extremely nasty to me and others over several years enjoying the food and drink we put out. So they cheer fake polls, and get quoted in the NYT, and act like they're some big influential bunch of hoo ha's, but in reality - they're really nothing at all.
******************* Twitter is the worst fucking invention on Earth (save Trump). It makes the mob seem 1000000x bigger than they actually are, like going after the poor teenage girl for wearing a dress. A poll was done and 95% said there was nothing wrong with that. And yet that 5% extreme minority on twitter seems like the whole world is after you. Posted by: Forderick Wonkensteen at May 03, 2018 05:37 PM (+dsLj) 429
Harry check Trump's tweet today on the subject. He says she admitted the contrary - no affair - as part of the settlement. None of us know. Yet most seem to just assume it's true.
Wonkensteen reminded me of something else about Trump that is quite interesting. He is, in fact, the most open and candid president we've had in my lifetime. By far. This of course is a big reason he connected with this voters, and why that connection has strengthened. He rarely parsed his words (quite the contrary), which many voters (correctly) interpreted as what he really thinks, and to their delight it turned out to be what he is actually trying to do. Stand to be corrected, but I can't think of any president or other major political figure in my lifetime who has stated his positions so clearly, and then stuck with them/pursued them so vigorously and directly. It's funny, and ironic. As a loud-mouthed Queens real estate developer/marketing guy, of course he's considered a "bulls***ter". Sort of just a cultural assumption. And he hasn't lost all his promotional instincts - he still exaggerates sometimes, and loves his superlatives. But when it comes to delivering, on vital national policies, while in the highest office in the land - he's infinitely more sincere and candid than almost anyone else in politics. he thing about the NeverTrumpers is that they are the ones that have been at the helm of the Republican Party for decades. The neverTrumpers were rooting for Hillary to not only beat Trump but to stomp him in a landslide. This was to be the excuse to purge "their" party, the GOP, of the deplorables.
Shockingly to them, it didn't work out that way and they are still clueless and outraged as to why. They don't know what to do at this point, so the only thing they can think of is to continue their efforts to disgrace Trump, and by extension his supporters, so that they can have "their" party back. Is there in principle more important then hating Trump? It reminds me of the unreasonably high level of vitriol the left has for Sarah Palin. Its all about hating their voters. In their mind the working and middle classes should never be allowed to be empowered. Their voices need filtered by representatives of the "smart set". Before Trump we lost every single engagement in the culture war because actually standing up for principles was beneath them.

So if the pitcher says "my arm is kinda buggin me" the trainer looks, and sees nothing obvious like a compound fracture or bleeding. He says "you think you can keep going?" and there are few pitchers on earth who will say "no" there. They'll all figure they have another inning in them or more. Ace: "Wrong. We almost all agree that Trump is, was, and will always be deeply flawed."
And his flaws are considerably less impactful on my life that than the flaws possessed by any other presidential candidate for which I've had a chance to vote. And Trump, BTW, has good characteristics that far outshine the compromised, bought cesspool of insiders that have been the only option I had ever been previously presented. Given the circumstances of Washington and the Glitteratti, Trump is a Saint. It's funny getting lectured to by the likes of these NeverTrumpers on How Best To Get Things Done when they haven't done sh*t but flap their gums, record some notes, and take boat trips. Posted by: AnonyBotymousDrivel at May 03, 2018 05:53 PM (H8S+R) 484
Trump's flaws could not cancel out his positives and the defects of his opponents were greater. Trump kept beating Republican candidates in the primary and Hillary to critical positions on trade, immigration, foreign policy, internationalism vs. nationalism.
The response from the other candidates would be to half heartily follow, outright say it was wrong, or claim Trump was lying without offering anything of their own on the subject. Maybe Trump is an idiot, but he won because all of his opponents kept getting outmaneuvered by him politically. If you are getting outmaneuvered by someone that is "stupid novice" what does that say about the quality of the political establishment in this country? If you want to beat someone you first have to make a accurate assessment of of strengths and weaknesses. Everyone seemed to figure out Trump's weaknesses, and never gave much thought to his strengths. Hence Hillary never set foot in Wisconsin... Posted by: William Eaton at May 03, 2018 05:55 PM (MuTTO) 485
Several weeks before the campaign, ace, you wrote that if Clinton won you would become a Democrat and keep your head down. Many of us got it. Unless someone deliberately chose to be a dissident, it would have been the only rational choice. Recent events prove as much, and even without a police state-type commissar at the helm our government continues to slide toward totalitarianism. Maybe that can be stopped, but probably not.
The Never Trumpers decided some time back our descent into authoritarianism--if they even honestly opposed it--was inevitable and they chose the path of least resistance. The congressional cucks came to the same conclusion as well. None ever will admit it but "Never Trump" was a fig leaf for a surrender that happened long ago. From a policy standpoint, your friend absolutely is right. While they lie to their respective bases about it, the Democrats and Republicans reached a consensus some time ago that end-of-history neoliberalism, and the attendant open borders and globalism, were inevitable and permanent. Hillary represented that endpoint and Trump was a departure from it, however long that lasts (it's why he historically will be the most important president of our lifetimes). Finally, the erosion of our civil liberties continues unabated. I find it almost poignant that some in the comments above continue to believe no search warrant would issue without probable cause. That train left the station long ago, and now the destruction of attorney-client privilege begins in earnest. I still think Trump will survive, and always will be indebted to him for the courage he has shown and never will believe anyone else who sought the nomination would have endured unless they submitted completely to the Deep State and its enforcers. The United States as a democratic entity is another matter. It's hard to put the totalitarian genie back into the bottle and government surveillance and lawlessness probably will grow until either we get the preferred solution of a national divorce or the more likely one of violent upheaval and division. Trump was the last change to avoid either and like most long shots it apparently will come up short. He'll finish his term, and likely be re-elected, but what follows will not dissent in any discernible way from Deep State orthodoxy. That cannot hold, and Never Trumpers chose sides long ago in anticipation of the aftermath. Posted by: Trump poisoned my cat at May 03, 2018 06:00 PM (qROhQ) 486

I keep seeing this "deeply flawed" characterization.
To my knowledge his character flaws have been: (1) Cheating on his wives with some hotty when he was younger. (2) Anything I see them put here doesn't generally amount to anything, if it isn't outright FakeNews. If anything, he's pro-American, and has a strong sense of justice - he makes sure to reward people who have done great things for him. And he went to great expense, and a vast amount of trouble to get our country back on the rails. They complain about him being blunt, but I'll take that over some slick-talking politician blowing smoke up my ass ANY day. They say he constantly lies, but HE'S the one working hard to fulfill his campaign promises, and his success at that has been remarkable. "Deeply flawed"? I must be missing something, 'cause those thing are super important, and he's been a LOT more virtuous in those areas than any other national politician. I'd say it's rather the opposite. Poor #NeverTrumpers.
They used to be important. Now they are reduced to being pseudo-Republican Pomeranians, circling and yipping, trying to bite President Trump's ankles. Posted by: TANSTAAFL at May 03, 2018 06:22 PM (T09ml) 494
They spent 20 years telling us "It's only sex." Now it's a big deal?
I didn't care then and I don't care now. Let them call us hypocrites. They made the rules, we are now playing by them. HOWEVER, they've changed the rules again by weaponizing the federal government against the deplorables. Posted by: Great Reagan's Deplorable Ghost at May 03, 2018 06:27 PM (56GKt) 495

Clinton's sex was impeachable by itself. Trump was a dozen years ago. Bill was ditching Secret Service and putting himself at risk of being setup by Putin. Also, getting oral while talking to a Congressman about the military who are fighting in Yugoslavia, impeachment material right there.

Very well done Ace. Nothing really to add-- On Target.

Well, nothing to add rather than I have an overwhelming compulsion to punch any one of these limp-wristed effete pansies right in the mouth if I were ever to have the opportunity.

Ace, I agree. I could not believe that Donald Trump would be a great, or even a particularly good president (though he's done surprisingly well in a number of areas). But in a contest between himself and Hillary Clinton, it's painfully clear that he would be the *better* president.
Or to put it another way: We elected a vulgar businessman from Queens as president - in other words, we elected President Archie Bunker. But after eight years of President Meathead, Archie is looking pretty damn good. Posted by: Brown Line at May 03, 2018 10:00 PM (S6ArX) 504
Trump could have (and probably did) bang Stormy Daniels like a cheap Chinese gong. And based on Stormy's track record as a porn actress, the emphasis should be on the word "cheap". And you know I don't give flying bushel of monkey poo about that. He wasn't any angel, and we knew that going in.
What I do care about is that he can, and does, bang Little Rocket Man about the head and shoulders until we come to some kind of Korean peace. And frankly the future ain't lookin' too bright for the Iranian mullahs. So far, it's all good. Posted by: Comanche Voter at May 03, 2018 10:05 PM (Sda6L) 505
As a boy I learned at my Dear Mother's knee how to spot a racket. In secondary school we had, among other things, _Julius Caesar_ and _MacBeth_. This was my education in politics and served and continues to serve me well. Never read newspapers or followed broadcast news because they never got to the good stuff. One day in 2005 while channel surfing something made me stop and go back. It was Donald Trump dismantling O'Donnell. (I never use her given name because that is how my Mother was known to her friends.) He was calm and measured and matter of fact with a bemused expression.
"You can't make false statements, O'Donnell will rue the words she said. I'll most likely sue her for making those false statements---and it'll be fun. O'Donnell's a loser. A real loser. I look forward to taking lots of money from my nice, fat, little friend." This was the good stuff. A big time operator publicly facing down a TV bully. Trump did not attack O'Donnell. O'Donnell attacked Trump and attacked Miss USA who was under Trump's protection. Then it was war and Trump did not just respond. He went for unconditional surrender. Donald Trump is not deeply flawed so you can stop with that. Donald Trump cares about those under his protection and upholds his word. Posted by: Wit's End at May 04, 2018 12:26 AM (ROYpB) 506
The link to Ann Coulter in your right column is dead.
Money quote: "...until Hayes, Kristol, Goldberg, and French stop lying and admit that they supported Hillary Clinton for president over Trump, they cannot criticize Trump for lying." Bingo. Posted by: Gandydancer at May 04, 2018 01:11 AM (SowZm) 507
I didn't vote for Trump. Voted for McMullin, which I regret. Thrilled Hillary lost. Not thrilled with Trump as POTUS since morally and ethically he is a dirt bag and I question his mental stability, but his administration and "style" have produced many positive results. That said, my main problem with Trump supporters are the evangelicals, many of them my friends and family, who say Trump is God's representative on Earth and completely dismiss his immorality by anointing him a modern day King David (that's not hyperbole, they literally say that). Even though I don't consider myself a christian, I believe it is one of the greatest forces for good in this world and I admire men of deep Christian faith. But the ease with which they have discarded their principles to excuse Trump's immorality bugs the hell out of me.

Like DownOurWay I voted for McMullin. My (probable pipe) dream was that neither candidate would win the majority of the electoral college votes. McMullin faded in Utah in the final weeks, but I voted for him hoping for a last minute change of heart for some. I didn't feel like I could vote for either candidate in good conscience and also was ambivalent about the actual governing results and power dynamics vs all GOP or split GOP congress with Dem executive branch.
My calculus was whether running up trillions more debt like we tend to do in this country under a united government was worth losing the supreme court seat. I have a feeling Hillary would've been mostly stonewalled and we'd have a $4-500 billion deficit now instead of a $1.5 trillion deficit. Under Obama, deficits declined when republicans gained control of congress. I think that trend of would've continued. On the plus side of PDT's presidency so far, we have a conservative justice, reduced regulations and reduced taxes which I applaud. We've also unearthed tons of corruption in the bureaucratic class. I'm still not sure if it is worth another trillion in debt though. I'm deeply worried about the fiscal future of this country.
