Are Comics Fans and Pros Showing Us How to Win a Culture War?

As I've mentioned a few times, I'm a big fan of the YouTube channel Diversity and Comics. Even though I'm only a little interested in comics, I watch the channel because it's funny, and it counter-attacks Social Justice Warriors, and now -- for the past six months -- it's been winning.

I'll talk about that more another time. But part of my fascination with the channel isn't about comics per se: It's about how to lead a grassroots viral rebellion against Social Justice Warrior takeover of a "key nodes and infrastructure" of the cultural battespace, and it has me wondering: Can this model be duplicated? Are there lessons here for winning the cultural fights on other fronts? Are there even lessons for fighting political fights?

Like I said, I'll talk about Diversity and Comics more another time. Right now I wanted to turn you on to another guy who's blowing up on YouTube by taking on another Social-Justice-Warrior captured cultural artifact: Star Wars.

Ethan Van Sciver -- until recently, exclusively with DC, doing mostly the Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps series, now taking a break to revisit his first creator-owned character, Cyberfrog -- can't really say anything about DC or Marvel, because he'll probably be working there again soon, but he can go after "SJW Star Wars." (Though, I always want to ask him: Why do you think Marvel won't be angry at you for going after another Disney-owned franchise?)

Anyway, his channel was already good when he was offering viewers informed and entertaining lessons on drawing.

It got funnier when he asserted that there were too many female characters in media, and decided to strike a blow against the Matriarchy by gender-swapping female characters to make them male-- She-Ra turned into He-Ra, Isis turned into I-Bro, Harley Quinn turned into Charlie Quinn. And Rainbow Brite transformed into a sword-wielding murderhulk, Rainbow Brute.

He then topped himself by gender-swapping My Pretty Pony into My Girthy Stallion.

Because -- seriously -- male pony characters are seriously underrepresented in cartoons. Google it.

But, about Star Wars. Last month he saw The Last Jedi and was "disgusted" by it and has turned his channel into 90% attacking Social Justice Warrior, "The Force is Female" Feminized Star Wars.

The way he gets away with this is that he's funny when he does it.

Inspiring his wrath the most is the "dumpy scowling feminist midget" character Rose Tico, who is widely acknowledged to have no point for existing except for Feminist Empowerment points.

Noting that Hasbro/Disney produced huge volumes of Rose Tico toys that sit "rotting on the shelves," as World Class Bullshitters earlier noted, almost as if Habro/Disney had a political agenda in producing huge quantities of a toy they could reasonably predict that few would want (Note, that's not Ethan Van Sciver, just another guy noting the same problem of overproduction), Van Sciver began buying up Rose Tico toys and reviewing them.

Spoiler alert: Not a fan.

This one's I think his first, when he was merely annoyed by the figure.

Then they put out a second Rose Tico toy when no one even wanted the first one, and he began to become slightly unglued.

People began to worry about his sanity when Hasbro/Disney shit out a third Rose Tico figure, after the first two basically drove Toys R Us bankrupt with their dumpy, scowling formless failure who doesn't have to look pretty just to appease your oppressive Male Gaze.

Now sadly driven insane by the feminist agenda of SJW Star Wars, he topped himself by buying 15 Rose Tico toys and looping them into a an hour long video of the toys being unboxed, and sometimes dismembered, proceeding through the emotional states of boredom, anger, rage, and finally, the exhausted acceptance of a broken man.

By the way, though it's an hour long, presumably for meditation purposes, it's actually just a five or so minute sequence looped a bunch of times, so you can just watch five minutes.

Do get to the scissors, though.

At any rate, as I said, this phenomenon of cultural critics savaging SJW tropes with humor is not only entertaining to watch, but it seems to be effective.

And I keep wondering what lessons other political commentators and agitators can take from this.

The only points I've gotten so far are pretty obvious, but maybe in need of re-learning.

Note that the people I'm talking about really aren't seriously political; but I'm looking at them as a potential model for actual political agitation.

1. The best weapon against a sanctimonious, pretend-pious, self-important Wannabe Priest Without the Collar is ridicule. These people -- SJWs, the media Truth Warriors, and yeah, the NeverTrumpers -- believe they carry a dignity and importance the rest of us just don't believe they do. We think they're fools. Other people would also think they were fools, if they were alerted to the fact that most people do think they're fools -- it's just that they control the means of communication and it's hard to get the word out that they're idiots, charlatans, and moral poseurs.

The Emperor's New Clothes and all that.

Stripping them of that false dignity and importance reduces them. It also drives them absolutely bananas. Because they really do conceive themselves as an Elect elevated above the deplorable masses.

2. You can get away with this if you're funny and biting and yet not angry or (overtly) mean-spirited. Watching Diversity and Comics, for example, I've noticed that when he's actually pissed off and emotionally invested in a topic, he's not nearly as funny, nor is he as persuasive. Emotional distance is required for ridicule to work -- it's funny if you're actually laughing at someone. If you're too pissed off to actually be laughing at someone, then it just sounds like an angry guy venting.

3. The culture war must be fought by asymmetric methods. The social justice warriors, the Establishment, the TDS media actually command all the "key nodes and infrastructure" of the culture wars. They have too much power and cannot be dislodged or even damaged by conventional means. There is no alternate media remotely large enough to directly challenge the leftist media. The war against them must be a guerrilla sort of affair of subversion and psyops, critique and ridicule. (Rush Limbaugh and others have been doing this for years, obviously.)

4. The most important take-away is just that the fight can be won. Disney is at a bit of a crisis point amidst widespread audience revolt over The Last Jedi; if the Solo movie fails -- which Van Sciver only refers to as "Soylo" -- Disney will actually have a fullblown crisis.

Marvel comics is attempting a negotiated treaty with fans in revolt -- as Diversity and Comics puts it, they're still giving readers the identity politics they don't want, but largely confined to their own identity-politics appeal books. Regarding the main books, they're putting less Social Justice Warrior/identity politics stuff in them.

Many people think Marvel is backsliding, and we'll have to see how this goes. But with the Editor in Chief Axel Alonzo fired and most of the Social Justice Warrior books canceled (or at least with the SJW characters put together into team books, where readers can have one-stop-shopping for completely ignoring them), at least some concessions to audience revolt have been made.

5. If you believe, as I do, and as Andrew Breitbart did, that most people who are "liberal" are really just "default liberals," and are not really political at all but will adopt whatever politics they see pushed by the media, then the importance of ridiculing progressivism and turning it from the default position to a joke seems obvious.

Remember, people who don't care about politics pick their politics according to the quite-rationale criterion of which politics will result in me being bothered, bullied and ostracized the least. With the intolerant, illiberal left pushing a militant form of neomarxism, people who don't much care about politics will adopt or at least accept a militant form of neomarxism as the standard, accepted form of politics. The politics of Least Cost and Least Effort. The political path of least resistance.

Battles that look a little silly -- fighting over whether or not Marvel comics pushes feminized male characters and masculized female characters, or whether or not Star Wars features nothing but Women in Command and incompetent cucks obeying their every order -- might actually be a bit more serious than they appear to the casual observer.

Politics is downstream of culture, of course, as Andrew Brietbart's central thesis had it.

6. Circling back a bit: Given that on the surface these particular culture wars -- over comic books, over Star Wars -- do in fact look a little silly (or very silly), then really, the only way to engage with them is to do so in silly, humorous ways, lest you look very ridiculous yourself by engaging seriously and heatedly with a silly-looking complaint. But responding to ridiculous Social Justice Warrior propaganda with ridicule -- laughing at them rather than fulminating against them -- seems to be the right kind of tactic for the job.

Cultural critics who appear too serious have always looked to me to seem a bit silly. Even though I know better, and realize that culture is the most important part of politics.

But cultural critics who engage the ridiculous with ridicule seem... persuasive.

7. As there's barely any chance of something with a larger budget like a TV show carrying this fight forward, it's going to be almost exclusively a battle fought by one-man or small-group operations on low-entry-barrier sites like YouTube. (Although, of course, that is hugely problematic: Google/YouTube are one of the left's greatest prizes, and will not permit a YouTuber to become too threatening to the left. An alternative to YouTube is needed.)

8. The way the media propagandizes is by packaging political messages inseparably from content about other matters. D&C, Comics Artist Pro Secrets, and a dozen similar sites (Just Some Guy, World Class Bullshitters, DICK in Comics, etc.) are doing a very similar thing, talking about a non-political matter, Star Wars or comics or Rose Tico toy reviews, while adding in some political commentary.

As Instapundit has observed dozens of times: If a Republican donor really wanted to make a huge impact in this nation's voting patterns, he'd start up a women's magazine about fashion and make-up and all the rest of it which just happened to have a very light, very occasional, stealthy conservative political outlook.

That used to be how liberal outlets did it, until they realized they had no other competitors and could now be stridently political 70% of the time, because where else could conservatives or moderates go?

9. Honestly, although people have been saying "blogging is dead" for years, I think maybe blogging is dead, and video commentary is the new blogging. Personally, I don't think I have the desire to do that or the particular talents, but that seems to me to clearly be the only front that matters any longer.

Anyway, those are my thoughts -- obvious as they might be.

And I realize that by taking this all a bit too seriously, I look a bit ridiculous right now myself.

So to take the edge off that: Below, your one hour of unboxing useless terrible dumpy scowling feminist midget Rose Tico toys.

first, one of the reasons that this place is so successful, has been for so long, is that it is ruthless in its application of logic, reason, and humor, often in concert. the no holds barred free fire zone that this place is is similar to bastogne during the battle of the bulge.

second, perhaps the worst thing about the whole political correctness movement was that it neutered the ability of white and conservative people to use humor that was humorous of their opponents, especially if they were any women, minorities or some combination.

sure, but the whole point of using humor to is that you do not need some highly organized, cumbersome defense of a position to achieve your goal, you simply dispatch your opponent with some quick, ruthless, slices to key points with humor.

when everyone is laughing with you it is an acknowledgement that they either agree with you or concede there is some truth in your position.

Comics in the 199o's were unfairly maligned. They had their flaws, in some franchises more than others, but, by and large the nadir of comics rep it was pegged with was not justified. Overall it was a good, though often excessive decade. Since around the early to mid 2000's is when you get actual wretched comics, pretty much across the board and today it's particularly awful. Shit stories, shit writing, shitty characters and shitty art. Just shit.

Good movie review, BTW. I haven't seen TLJ or the one before it either. The first three episodes (4, 5, and 6) were the best, IMHO. The franchise has been dragged down ever since. Having The Giant Rat buy them insured their demise.

I saw about 10 minutes of the Diversity Jedi over the weekend. It was a scene of Mary Jane Star Wars and Justin Trudeau fighting and then having a tug of war over a light saber. I really would not pick on DS9 as being the worst offender here. Jadzia Dax is an annoying Mary Sue, whom the writers killed off regrettably late in the series.

Ezri Dax by contrast was great, even if we only get her in the last season, and really only in the first half of that.

Besides Ezri we get Nana Visitor playing Major Kira Nerys, who is insistently NOT a perfect soul. Kira constantly reminds the audience and herself that she used to be a 'terrorist' - she never thinks of herself as having been anything more noble, and she wrestles with that legacy over the whole seven year run.

There are annoyances in DS9: Jadzia sucks, half the Ferengi episodes are stupid anti-Republican (and antiSemitic) caricatures, occasional SJW tripe like the gay changeling. Overall though the series is a classic.

102 Comics in the 199o's were unfairly maligned. They had their flaws, in some franchises more than others, but, by and large the nadir of comics rep it was pegged with was not justified. Overall it was a good, though often excessive decade. Since around the early to mid 2000's is when you get actual wretched comics, pretty much across the board and today it's particularly awful. Shit stories, shit writing, shitty characters and shitty art. Just shit.

The 90s was a minor golden age; the limits and stops got ripped out and creators ran wild.

Marvel and DC had grown sclerotic and needed a serious reboot.

By the time Image debuted, there was a real energy, an electric vibe that the whole industry was being turned upside down.

It wasn't until Image gagged on its own success and over-exposure did the comic industry fall into a depression.

The SWJ turds that are cosplaying as creators grew up during that era, and that's part of the reason why they wanted to jump into it.

The cultural momentum carried over from the intial 90s material being made into blockbuster flicks in the late 90s and early 2000s.

122 Just made it 1/3 through Avengers: Infinity War when I walked out. Just before the curtain parted a family of 9 people with two toddlers (literally 3 years old) came in a took up half a row. The children apparently ceased to exist for the family's adults as both were talking, whimpering, whining and screaming throughout a PG-13 movie where 10 minutes in one character is murdered quite graphically. Can't blame the kids, they're kids. What is wrong with adults who (a) bring kids to a movie you KNOW has things like this and (b) then ignore them as if they're in their own living room, not in an auditorium with a hundred other people who paid to see this?

I don't often call people scummy but rude isn't a strong enough word for people like that.

The apologetic but useless manager on duty comp'd me a pass for another showing.

In the first movie Ripley could have been a man; it had the alien monster beast killing all in the ship (haunted house) and the sole survivor engaging the one thing to send the demon/beast away.

In the second movie....it still could have been one or the other.

Speaking of good movie/mini-series how about "Bataan" as a concept. So much could have been done to make the peninsula into a bastion, so much could have been moved there. And the Japanese Imperial Army was the one for a WWI trench warfare fight.

I don't find children leading the way in adult issues to carry much weight, though the leftists are trying to use children to narrate their agenda nonetheless. I wouldn't really ask a 14 year old for advice on taxes, relationships, how to handle co-workers or a boss, etc, because my knowledge exceeds theirs in these areas.

On the other hand, when it comes to comics, comic-based movies, toys, cartoons, etc, these are areas in which children have actually more insight and wisdom than do adults in many cases. In this way, then, the input from the consumers of these products (kids) is actually valued and in many cases more accurate.

Because of this, a kid complaining about the ridiculousness of a Social Jedi Warrior in a SW movie actually carries far more impact than does a political blogger to those in the middle. Because it's a kid, the input is more genuine and disarming and is infinitely more sincere and charming. It's a kid commenting genuinely on a kid issue.

I saw this in action as my twelve year old nephew railed on the recent SW movie at a restaurant a few months ago to the point that his 17 year old cousin and his friend decided they were not going to see it as well as my brother-in-law deciding to skip it as well.

Maybe the way to combat SJWs most effectively is through the eyes and words of those most effected by them.

Interesting back-story:

In the pilot episode, and in the first three or four episodes of Lost in Space, Dr. Smith was actually quite villainous, and was supposed to be a COMMUNIST SPY (seriously). But after a few episodes it became clear that this relationship -- having a murderous spy living with the family -- could not be sustained as a permanent feature of a long-running series. The only way to make it believable if he was completely incompetent and cowardly as a spy and killer, thus making it understandable how he could continue to co-exist with the family.

Then, in the second season, they started giving the actor who played Dr. Smith, Jonathan Harris, some freedom to ad-lib lines, and almost immediately his humor became the most popular part of the show, and he became the show's most iconic character. So much so that in the third season, by sheer force of personality, he took over the entire show, and turned it into a surrealistic farce.

So, that explains the whole arc of the LIS:TOS (Lost In Space: The Original Series):

First season: Attempts at serious sci-fi and gripping drama and authentic emotions (attempts which mostly flopped);

Second season: The "Golden Era" with a perfect balance of action, comedy, sci-fi, and emotion.

Third season: Decadent descent into idiotic slapstick and ridiculous settings.

The last science fiction show (non horror) I watched was the BSG reboot which I loved the first season.

Marvel and DC had grown sclerotic and needed a serious reboot.

By the time Image debuted, there was a real energy, an electric vibe that the whole industry was being turned upside down.

It wasn't until Image gagged on its own success and over-exposure did the comic industry fall into a depression.

The SWJ turds that are cosplaying as creators grew up during that era, and that's part of the reason why they wanted to jump into it.

The cultural momentum carried over from the intial 90s material being made into blockbuster flicks in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Agreed. The 90's was a good decade. A minor golden age? Yes, I would agree. I think people overestimated the previous decades and were thrown by the sheer volume and variety of styles of the 90's. Sure there was a ton of stuff coming out (probably too much) and there was some pretty average stuff... but in all that output, the highs matched and even exceeded those of the 60's to 80's. There was some naff stuff coming out back too, just not as much because there were far fewer titles.

I've waited on the new LIS until I heard the Moron reviews. If it's half as bad as the movie remake back in the '90's, I'll pass.

In that debacle, if I'd been Dr. Robinson, I'da put Dr. Smith and Mrs. Dr. Robinson both in the airlock about 20 minutes into it. Gracious, she was insufferable in that flick.

Electric Dreams is pretty good. Looks like the old revival of The Outer Limits from the Canadian production company a few years back, which was a remake of the '60's series which I also watched. Not too much SJW BS, thank goodness.

Each year our neighborhood in our quiet Seattle suburb has the Meet and Greet your neighbors night.Most bring a dish, I bring wine. Lots of wine. "Oh no, I don't normally drink, but just one small glass, ok."
It takes about an hour or so and three glasses later, I know pretty much everyone's politics, and their background. I have already had separate off line conversations with a couple of my neighbors, and we have coordinated our lists.

On another note, I have two new friends that go to the range with me. We even lend and borrow ammo together. And even with lots of grey hair, they can both hit a sub-2 MOA at 200 yards. And I got to shoot a .338 Lapua Weatherby for the first time. Damn. My kind of friends.

That is just one more thing my newer neighbor with the new car sporting a "Resist" sticker isn't aware of. He could be in for a rude surprise.

But we all share kids and grandkids pictures. Gotta keep up the facade.

The very fundamental theory behind SJWing and gender obfuscation is flawed.

The theory says that girls are sheparded into girl activities because of the parental bias. I don't know if this is truly the case, in fact I think it's quite likely it's completely wrong.

If I had to surmise, a group of adults on early civilization didn't create a series of human endeavors and then assign them to a gender. It's infinitely more likely that genders assumed roles and activities that they were most suited to, proficient at, and posively inclined to do.

I notice tonight when my daughter attempted to put a coat on our corgi that the corgi flailed and flopped because dogs aren't so inclined to wear clothes. It's a punishment as near as the dog can tell and it resisted.

Likewise, I think attempting to get a boy to enjoy things that were designed to appeal to a girl, to the nature of a girl, will invariably result in a natural inclination in the boy to resist. You can only attempt to ram a round peg into a square hole for a certain period of time before it shreds, breaks or splinters.

I grew up in a suburb the bordered Chicago. I was saved from desegration laws in the early 70s by only one thing. Geography.

Even if they did a complete reset and turned back the clock to better standard, their business model has already done too much damage to salvage ongoing sales. I'm not just generically depressed about nothing in particular; I'm depressed about a very specific fact.

About two weeks ago I met at a media event some random-seeming young woman, who had been invited as a "digital influencer" to cover the event. She sat there glumly taking photos occasionally, not really talking to anyone. Maybe, I'd guess, 26 years old. She was (a rarity these days) somewhat insecure, and (even rarer) thought she was worse-looking than she actually was -- in fact, she was quite pretty, but didn't realize it. But we chatted for a while and like all young people these days seemed mostly uninformed about life, history, politics, reality -- miseducated by a failed university system and trapped in a narcissistic bubble of her own concerns.

Not a big deal, Didn't really give her much thought after the event.

But just now, as part of my job, I needed to see what "media coverage" was written/posted about the event, so I was doing a roundup of it all, and then it occurred to me I only remembered the name of some blog she had, and never learned her actual name. So I eventually found her blog, and then from that found her name, and then from that found what she had posted about the event. OK, fine. Done.

But then out of curiosity I wondered what her "real job," if any, was. So I just now googled her name. And found her LinkedIn page and various other pages about her work resume.

She is, indeed, 27 years old. But she's basically retired because for the last five years she's been working for Google Play and YouTube (got hired right out of college) as some sort of "content reviewer" and (it's horrifying what you can find on the Internet these days) she rose through the ranks a bit and by the time she quit she was making $230,000/year.

I shit you not.

Although her motivation for leaving Google was never revealed online, it seemed to me that she just quit because she's already made enough money and now could goof off for the rest of her life.

Anyway, short version:

Ill-educated, unskilled random young college graduates can, if they know how to work the system, get insanely high-paying jobs right out of college these days, far beyond what 98% of hard-working talented geniuses can earn.

The Comic fans are mostly middle aged late career men, mostly white, but with a healthy cultural and ethnic mix. They generally fall in the Right Leaning Libertarian category. Not a lot of hardcore weekly standard types. But who they are brings up the second point you get wrong.

They have too much power and cannot be dislodged or even damaged by conventional means. ". Sounds pretty but it ignores the most critical of all nodes in the culture wars. The one that we control. In the case of Comics Fans, Gamers, Star Wars fans, Metalheads, SciFi Readers, all the niche communities that have become attacked and infested during the culture war, we remain the core consumers. 20% of the hardcore classic fans bring 80% of the financial returns in these industries. That 20% is Diversity & Comics and Ethan's listeners. That 20% are the Gamergaters who elect to not pre order games. Who elect not to buy the game or see the movie on release day. 20% of the hardcore consumers are witholding their custom from those that treat them unprofessionally. That declare them irrelevant or dead. The sheep have figured out that they are the ones that hold the wallets. And with that discovery it is the smug elitist shepards that are suddenly bleating for money ("Hey man can I crowdfund a sandwich?" )

Always remember, we have the money. The consumer injects the money into the industry. They are the financial point of entry. The most powerful lever is with them. If they don't like what they are seeing, they don't buy. And it is remarkably easy to keep those dedicated hardcore 20/80 consumers informed. None of these insulting and abusive media companies exist on high margins. The slightest disruption will crater most of them quickly. And it's not a Boycot. (Boycots are stupid) It is simply informing the consumer on the nature and quality of the product. Providing a forum where they can discuss it themselves, and come to their own conclusions. This is the Foundation that all those Nodes and Infrastructure sit on. And we control that Foundation. We always have, we always will. They just try hard to make us forget that fact.

Yes, the key is kids. IF you can show (convince) them (the kids) that the SJWs are LYING to them (e.g. "All the polar bears are going to drown because Climate Change!"), you will have activated the kid's BS detector, and they will look deeper at what they are being told.

Once they (the kids) figure out they are being lied to, most of the SJW BS being pushed on them will be ignored (if not mocked by the braver kids.) The SJWs lose their power at this point.

Be truthful with the kids, do NOT lie to them. Most are not stupid. You want to win, you have to reach that generation. Hopefully the seeds of responsibility and common sense will grow from there...
