Absent from this piece is any explanation of how Trump threatens the rule of law any more than some of his predecessors did. Kind of an important part of the argument, isn't it? I'm one of those persuadable Trump skeptics. I'd prefer he wasn't the president. I'm not a fan of most of his behavior. I am open to the possibility that he's doing irreparable damage to presidential norms and expectations of conduct. But it would take an extraordinary case to convince me he poses such a unique danger that I should generically vote for politicians with whom I vehemently disagree just to restore order. This piece comes nowhere near making that case. Boot doesn't even try to make it. He just assumes you agree with him and then complains that people aren't doing enough. And, he doesn't bother addressing the problems with Democrats and their policies or why his concern about Trump should override those problems. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Yeah, when someone does that I just tune out. Trump has been pretty Presidential except for his tweets.
This is the thing that the never trumpers do not seem to comprehend. The man does what he should, even if he doesn't always talk like they'd prefer. He's walking the walk, and as long as he keeps doing that, I can live with any tweets or weird comments he might make. I don't know what its like behind the scenes or how he acts personally in office. He might be a bizarre and really abrasive person at work. I doubt it very strongly but maybe. BUT HE'S GETTING THE WORK DONE. And people who fixate on what he says rather than what he does are people who put style over substance, who celebrate behavior and appearance over work and results. And these are people who are very difficult to take seriously. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 24, 2018 12:46 PM (39g3+) 104

He needs easy content from somewhere
There's probably some of that, but if you read Ace on Twitter you'd know they were a personal project of his. I think he finds people who are ostensibly conservative and used to be at least somewhat reliable voices turning against Trump so totally to be infuriating. He seems to view their actions as a betrayal not to him but to America and the fight against the left. And most of all I think Ace knows what a bullet we and particularly he dodged -- the Obama administration threw a guy in jail for making a movie they didn't like mind you -- that he's outraged that they cannot seem to get this. That's my read at least. And he wants the world to know and understand this, its what he spent most of his time on Twitter doing. I mean he started out trying to reach out to them and persuade, and we all know how persuasive and well-written Ace can be. And they flicked him aside like lint when they weren't attacking him for it. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 24, 2018 01:00 PM (39g3+) 224

This exchange just got me thinking, probably too deep for a Tuesday.
I think about 18th century America and wonder if there was a single inflection point where people just decided that there was a culture gap too wide to bridge. I mean, here in The Colonies, there was a big premium on being self sufficient, on taking care of yourself and so on, which was encouraged by the effective lack of the Crown being present. People learned that they CAN INDEED live without the august English throne telling them what to do. I've been at this inflection point for quite some time now. I see pop culture and don't recognize any of it...values, rules, taboos, etc. Pop music is similarly incomprehensible to me. And now I see that pundits are gleefully separating themselves from the people they purport to represent in the media...after all, wasn't that the genesis of the pundit job to begin with, as a way for the regular guy to talk back? Very convoluted reasoning, I know. What I worry about but don't see a good way of stopping is a critical mass deciding that they've had enough, on either side of the aisle, and getting more active in their attempts to assert their values. Gathering economic power to DC and putting it in the hands of an unelected bureaucracy will be benign, because it will be run by good Americans.
I am increasingly convinced that these people are all from a separate, distinct faction that was shaped by private high end schools and colleges, of a similar culture and mindset, even if they aren't in agreement on all particulars. They all want the same results, if not the same policies: a feudal system with them in charge and in comfort as philosopher kings ruling over the wretched masses, uneducated and working to provide them all the comforts of modernity while enjoying none of it. I think about 18th century America and wonder if there was a single inflection point where people just decided that there was a culture gap too wide to bridge. I believe that at the very least, that kind of thing makes it easier for revolt to take place. I think you can make the same argument for the Civil War: southern culture was very different from northern, to the point of nearly being a distinct nation, so they decided to take it all the way (in a grossly oversimplified statement that ignores all the other pressures and causes) Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 24, 2018 01:07 PM (39g3+) 274

It started at least as far back as the 7 Years War, when when a bunch of innocent New England farm boys, good Puritans, joined up with the British army (not as Redcoats themselves, but as colonial troops) and discovered that the redcoats cussed worse than the Horde. Quite a culture shock. The breaking point was in 1776 when they realized that the King himself was in opposition to them. Early in the war most folks assumed that the King had their back and that it was a just a bunch of corrupt ministers and MPs that were trying to deprive them of their English liberties. It was only when they realized that they were indeed in opposition to the Crown that the majority of the rebels decided that they really had nothing in common with Britain. That is why the Declaration came something like 9 months after the fighting had begun. Posted by: Grey Fox at April 24, 2018 01:12 PM (bZ7mE) 303

This is about "who you know."
Many "conservatives" went to the same fine schools as the libs. They want to be liked even more than the libs. The libs will take a beating and go dirty to get what they want - see Obamacare. Sure, lose 900 seats in 8 years because of policies and we actually had a close election to succeed Obama and here we are 2 years later with the Ds sniffing at taking the House and not losing as many seats in the Senate as was believed 18 months ago. What Trump has done is shown that many Rs were "loyal" opposition in name only. Raise bunches on money, rail against Obama/Hillary, get invited to the cool kids parties and that was their entire plan. Goldberg, etc., are scared because they've been caught lying for years about what could be accomplished. They were unwilling to take a hit - but more than happy to ask with their hand out for a cabin reservation or subscription to their magazine, with the sole purpose of making people feel better because they wrote what they wanted to accomplish. Once in a position to accomplish said items, they suddenly recoiled because the cool kids didn't like them if they tried to accomplish what they had been writing about. The Jig is up. And for many of these folks, it will never, ever be the same. They know that, and that's the reason for them all going overboard. Posted by: Steve_in_SoCal at April 24, 2018 01:14 PM (bB4HN) 329

"Absent from this piece is any explignatory anation of how Trump threatens the rule of law"
In fact, President Trump is restoring the Rule of Law. DACA was a One-Man law. The President brought it back to Congress. The Paris Climate Accord was an illegal One-Man Treaty. We were the only signatory whose legislature did not vote. Again, it is up to Congress. also enforcing the The Iran Deal was another illegal One-Man Treaty. Obama had it approved by the Iranian legislature but not the Senate. The President also rolled back the massive Grand Staircase land-grab in Utah which was confiscated without local or Congressional input under the Monuments Act rather than the National Park Act. The President is also enforcing the laws Congress passed on immigration. And rolling back regulations by the unelected Perma-Blob that Congress never passed. And neither is he wiretapping and framing his political opponents as was done to him and probably Mitt Romney before him. President Trump is restoring the Rule of Law at every turn. The Anti Trump Hysteria is a classic, chilling example of mass hysteria, abetted by the most cynical propaganda.
To understand the mechanism, think about how even Milquetoast Mitt became The Worst Human Being Ever for going out of his way to hire women on his staff, as to point his hiring people to "binders full of women." It bears repeating that this gesture, and phrase, was specifically to further female hires, and register the Mittman's outrage that moar wimmen were not being hired for top positions. But Ohmygodohmygodohmygod "binders!" "women!" the DNC/media shrieked for days on end, until the masses of insecure, LIV sheep internalized the emotional response. I might point out that, in fairness to the DC NeverTrumpers, the Right really HAS changed, starting at the end of the Bush years due to frustration with the handling of Iraq and Afghanistan, poor fiscal discipline, and attempts at amnesty, and growing more pronounced over the Obama years.
Some of the common wisdom here on this blog would have been quite controversial if posted ten years ago. So it really shouldn't surprise us that folks that were considered good conservative voices ten years ago are now out of sync with the base. NeverTrumpers love to rant about how dumb stoopid PDT is, ignoring the fact that he is not. At all. They're getting wrapped around the axle on matters of style. PDT is blunt, sometimes coarse, and speaks in a simple and straightforward manner. He doesn't talk like a slick, silvertongued politician, which is what gets deemed "smart" by the Chardonnay-and-penis-sipping yacht club cons. PDT is what I call a "real-world guy." When he speaks, he makes a point, as opposed to traditional politicians who talk at length and never say anything of substance. These Never-Trumpets are allergic to truth and reality. But, I guess that's what happens when you reach their level. They have nothing to worry about, always have plenty of money and no problems to ever deal with. So naturally, tater tots are what's important to them. Posted by: BackwardsBoy likes lobster at April 24, 2018 01:44 PM (GdWl+) 521

It's "jig is up". Why? Because a jig is a craftsman's tool used to mass produce parts of a product with very little need to hand-fit each piece. When the jig was "up" they had put the jigs up against the wall and were done with work for the day. That means no more crafting work would be done that day.
Its a nice invention though We casually use English nautical terms without knowing what most of them are. For example 3 sheets to the wind - referring to ropes (sheets) loose and blowing in the wind without being controlled by the sailors. Our language is full of these idioms, so old now no one even knows what they came from. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 24, 2018 01:45 PM (39g3+) 525

It is a false dichotomy that we continue with a badly flawed agreement or bomb Iran. That sort of thinking led to the Iraq War in 2002. Germany, for example, had a lot to do with supplying Saddam's regime and would do so in a heartbeat with Iran if they could do so without repercussions. An alternative way is simply apply the sanctions to the international companies doing business with Iran if they do business or use U.S. technology, patents, parts, banking, etc. Go back to the Soviet era, the U.S. angered the Euros then by forbidding U.S. subsidiaries from selling pipeline technology to the USSR and similar sanctions exist for some defense technologies as well.
The U.S. can even withdraw from a treaty unilaterally by presidential action (see Carter v. Goldwater) and GW Bush's withdrawal from the ABM treaty. Thus, a nebulous agreement can be changed via the executive alone regardless of what Congress wants. Basically, treaties and agreements internationally exist until they don't in a world of sovereign states. It's insane. They should organize a "flip off the camera day" in the UK. Thousands of people. But people don't fight back anymore, not even on the ridiculous stuff. And that, boys and girls, is how we lose our liberty. Is there a White House petition about the issues with Google and Twitter, considering all we now know? Nevermind. I'm crossing my *zip it* line. Now they ARE those characters. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 24, 2018 01:13 PM (39g3+) I think they're still closer to Hawkeye. Insubordinate, womanizing, whiny, haughty. Believes his talent in one area (surgery) qualifies him as an expert commentator in all other areas of life, and that other people are ignorant to his obviously superior wisdom and morality. Unlike Burns who was just made to be a patsy, Winchester comes across as a pretty sympathetic character in comparison. Posted by: Sjg at April 24, 2018 01:59 PM (gDSJf) 544
"I am open to the possibility that he's doing irreparable damage to presidential norms and expectations of conduct."
-------------------------- Open to the possibility. It seems to me that Molratty's entire column is directed at the abject failure of Nevertrumpers to substantiate their wild claims about Trump and to explain what specific faults are so serious that it would lead them to endorse Democrats. I don't get the outrage here. Molratty is taking exactly the right approach. Doesn't anyone here deal with mushy-headed LIVs? with country club Republicans? with fuzzy knee-jerk Dems? When someone like that gives me the spiel about Trump's contempt for law or the Constitution, etc., I ask them for specifics. I do so with the implication that I am open to their arguments, which makes them actually try to find them. When they can't find them --- and they can't --- it plants seeds of doubt in their minds. think you are on to something, though I'd like to point out that they might not have been consciously lying to us, just lazy and far, far too comfortable in the progressive-dominated culture to realize themselves how closely they had aligned with their supposed opposition. Part of the anger might come from the sudden self-revelation and/or denial of the same. ====== Its organized lying. they get their talking points from a central drop around 4:00am every day. That's why its so coordinated. Posted by: simplemind at April 24, 2018 01:24 PM (DjJ5P) Perhaps not consciously lying, but it's kinda like saying "free college" or "basic income for all." If you're intelligent, you know that can't possibly happen. Likewise, saying we'll "undo Obamacare" and the like and then suddenly having the ability to do so - assuming that ability would never come - I call it lying. I am worried that the N-Ts and the Dems are actually willing to cause the NK initiative to fail, rather than allow Trump any success. Given that the State Dept is allegedly a nest of Obama stay-behinds, I think this is a dangerously plausible outcome. Admittedly, the chance of a REAL success are long, but that could make the temptation for the Deep State to go for a fake failure even more attractive.

Good Republicans don't support Democrats, because Democrats have become Communists. There are no more "Democrats", only Socialists and Communists, and modern Vichy, those that support and sleep with them. And the one thing those formerly known as Democrats hate - America and our Constitution. Does that help the writer? Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at April 24, 2018 04:21 PM (UsCnO) 552
The people that point out OTHER Never Trumpers by writing a post that takes several gratuitous slams at DT. They are like the people that swear they are independents or moderates as they make their leftist points.
Oh, and to answer that gratuitous slam -- I'm sure the person said the same thing long ago when BC was getting BJ's in the oval office....would she mind posting that, so we can all see it? or, if preferable, we could debate whether DT's standing up for himself is nearly as bad as the concern trolls in 0the media calling him an unqualified, mentally disturbed rapist.
