Several had seen Sam Whittemore's "last stand" and approached to remove his body. To everyone's astonishment Sam was not only still alive, but conscious and still full of fight. Laying there, he was trying to load his musket!Oh, and Captain Whittemore was 80 years old at the time.

You can buy it in Canada, in cans, and I literally bring cases home when I return from visiting the Great White North (one time a border agent commented on all the cases in my car), but to get The Real Thing, you have to buy imported Mexican Coke in the traditional curved glass bottle. It's more expensive than regular Coke. Worth. Every. Penny.

I'm Watching Laura Ingraham argue that Comey's memos were government property and could not legally be shared the way Comey shared them based on that.
She misses an important point.
Come classified these memos as SECRET so they would be treated as such, since he could not himself determine that they were anything else. He put a declass date on them. He put them into the classified material handling pipeline - where rules exist about handling, downgrading, and declassifying.
Then, at his own whim, he simply gave them to a civilian for the purpose that they would be distributed publicly, quickly bypassing that tedious set of rules codified in national laws.

As for the sugar cane vs. fructose, it's my belief that the sodas made with pure sugar have a drier finish than the ones with high fructose corn syrup--and you need only a glass to satisfy you--not a 20oz. bottle......

We get the real thing here. A friend who is a fellow rum drinker asked me to make him a rum and coke awhile back. He had been using that awful diet/zero swill for years coz he was concerned about putting on the pounds. I gave him one with the real thing and the dude just about had an orgasm. "What IS this rum? That depends on when your childhood was. The old-style gas station vending machines and coolers in the 1930s and 40s had 6 oz. bottles. I've seen old ads from the 50s touting the new 12 oz. bottles. I doubt that any bottles larger than that existed before the 70s.
I guess the bottles seemed bigger when you were little.

Back decades ago when we lived in Chicago there was a Mexican restaurant a block or so from the art-movie-house out on Fullerton that would do Margaritas-to-go in styrofoam cups like you would get chili or guacamole in - these got me through many an incomprehensible movie back-in-the-day.
One of those things we had to give up to live out here where you have to drive 40 minutes to a town with a population in 5 digits. Like gyros, a decent Italian beef, Thai or Korean food, ...

Sinus burn, if it exists, is CO2. Take a deep hit off any carbonated beverage - without drinking any - to see that that is true.
Saccharides - whether sucrose, glucose, or fructose - don't burn. Carbon dioxide does. A lot.

Don't know what it would take to bring sugar back except in niche uses. HFCS is a viscous liquid and transports better than sugar, like oil vs. coal.
Sugar is definitely better and better for you than HFCS.

I've broken several bones, and had corresponding surgeries to implant plates, etc.
I detest opiod painkillers, and cannot understand why anyone likes them. I felt weird,dizzy, nauseous, and constipated, and stopped taking them the day after surgery.

I had a synthetic opioid with my first labor & delivery. It made me feel like a thousand bees were stinging me, but did nothing for the pain.
Some years ago, I sliced my thumb down to the bone with a box cutter. The hand surgeon gave me a scrip for Vicodin. I was not in any pain (a theme in my life), but I popped a couple to see what the fuss is about. I felt...nothing.
Just a couple of years ago, I had a genetic test done to see what centrally acting drugs I am sensitive to...I apparently have very few opioid receptors. Interesting. Maybe that's why I never get that elusive runner's high everyone matters on about...for me, the pain of the long miles is what keeps my mind from chewing itself into tatters.
Maybe insom needs to hit the trails with me...

I think it's shipping costs. A crateful of empty pop bottles weighs at least half as much as a crateful of full ones. So it costs nearly as much to ship empties back to the bottling plant as it cost to ship the full bottles out. A case of empty aluminum cans weighs almost nothing in comparison.

When I left the Navy I had it shipped to me in LA and drove it back to Lansing, stopping to visit family and friends I hadn't seen in years along the way. I think going across the High Desert I was actually putting diesel back in the pumps and getting money charged back onto my card. That thing got stupid good mileage.

well, as glass goes, breakage is a huge problem. there were one or two tries to open pepsi plants in russia before the cold war came down. didn't work because roads were so poor and trucks rode so rough that they had huge breakage losses.

That's one of the few good things about living just north of Detroit. Wisconsin gets hammered and as the snow crosses Lake Michigan it seems to shift either north of south of us. All the snow that's fallen in the past few weeks, we only got a few inches and it was always melted by noon the next day.

Not bad if they keep it simple and have a stop / yield on all inbound legs. Annoying if they make some inbound stop, some yield, some dedicated no-stop inbound... and force exit on some outbound legs and not others.
I know one where with three lanes if you enter heading west -
the right most lane doesn't have to stop or yield but has to exit heading north, center lane has to yield and has to exit west, the left lane has to yield but can change lanes once in and exit any way...
And the rules are different if you enter from the other three ways.

Both the seal, and its mating piece, called a "wear sleeve" and unique to the 11.5 inch axle, were surprisingly easy to install. Even considering that I am not supposed to do any heavy lifting until my eye heals. Blood pressure, you know. Heaviest thing I "lifted" was the 3/4" air impact, and I really only moved it a foot or two.
My neighbor came down, and moved the hoist ramps for me, which would have been a bridge too far, lifting-wise. Then we put his son's car on the hoist, and I went over for an insurance inspection. It was OK, too.
So, a good shop day. And the snow continues to melt, despite it not being real warm. But the Sun was warm.

We do not have spring. We have breakup. As in, the ice and snow break up and fall apart and for a couple of weeks you wear your xtratuffs everywhere, including to the office, and then it's summer.
So, this is a slow breakup, which is taking about three weeks, due to the extra snow we had, which is lovely. We didn't get a Chinook this year, so that slowed down the melting, too, but it doesn't freeze much at night so things are now moving apace.
In a week, we will be doing field work at the Little League diamonds, and then on to baseball season. The boy is in the majors this year, and DH is coaching, as always. Reliving the glory days. But he is the coach every boy wants, because he cuts no slack and he really teaches them the game. He lives for this.
We won't go camping until June--too cold in the mountains just yet. But then there's dipnetting, and smoking salmon, and lots of beer drinking.....in the woods. We will be going with friends more than once this year, which is terrific fun.

Is the little "shoe" still attached to the glass? In which case, all you need is a small Allen wrench to attach the mirror to the shoe, and one may well come packed with the new mirror.
If you have to glue the shoe to the glass, obtain a package of rear-view mirror adhesive from an auto parts store, and follow the instructions on the package very strictly. All residue of the old adhesive must be removed (razor blade scraper), and the glass cleaned VERY thoroughly. Be sure you don't mount the "shoe" upside down.
It's really an easy job to do yourself.

Usually it gets mounted to the trim moulding that surrounds the windshield on the inside. Often by removing moulding screws, and using them to attach the brackets. Some newer cars don't have moulding screws. You could also use two of the mounting shoes for stick-on mirrors, I guess.
I have a spare Wink mirror here. Should try mounting it in one of my vehicles, and see how it holds up to what my memory of it is.

The problem with roundabouts is you want to add them where there's an intersection that can no longer handle traffic due to growth. But they take up more room than intersections, so you can't really add 'em without ripping up the neighborhood.

They take a lot more land and leave useless islands in the middle that need to be maintained.
All in all, roundabouts are a waste and a license for government to waste more property and assume more maintenance costs and responsibilities. We won't even talk about what they would do regarding bicycle paths through the roundabouts.
The simple 4-way stop sign is far superior and can easily be replaced with a light if traffic patterns change in that direction or by taking two of the stop signs out if traffic drops enough.

The roundabouts (they call them rotundas) in Managua, Nicaragua are the shiznit. Multiple lanes, and often 5 or 6 roads in/out of them. With statues in the middle. And traffic just zooms around them.They really do manage to move a lot of traffic smoothly.

We had two intersections turned into roundabouts in town. People seem to grasp the difference of yielding and stopping at it, though.
If you think about it, the 4-way stop is a bit ineffective, since you have stop at the intersection regardless if there are other cars or not.

The problem with traffic circles in North America is mostly caused by politicians, or their hired idiots, who implement traffic circles because they think they look groovy, with little regard for the actual needs of the road users. Edmonton, Alberta, famously has traffic circles with frigging traffic lights on them. Talk about "unclear on the concept".

Double Clutching is what you did in a straight-cut gearbox with no synchros, to reduce the amount of metal shavings sheared off into the sump, from when you didn't so maneuver the leftmost pedal.
Synchros are the expression of mechanical genius introduced into the cogs, so as to eliminate the need to master the three pedal dance on the downshift as a routine matter of everyday driving.
And if you want "double clutching" fun, try riding a Suicide Clutch Harley Davidson, with a tank-mounted shifter on a winding, twisty mountain road.

Mine taught me to drive a stick on a 1985 Toyota van - the kind where you sit over the engine, it looks like a Star Trek shuttlecraft and you can't tell which end is the front.
She's very much not like yours though, I rode shotgun with her for the first time in years recently and noticed that she lugs the engine something awful. As someone who upshifts at about 4500 RPM, once I noticed that, it drove me fucking bonkers the rest of the ride.

Try cross-over lanes at highway diamond intersections. Supposedly makes it easier for left hand turns to the on ramps.
Instead of just a traffic light at the on / off ramps all lanes cross over to the left side of the road, and then back to the right at the next set of on / off ramps. So just under the highway, the secondary road is driving on the opposite side of the road.

I guess a lot of the old city that fell down was just abandoned, and they built new in the then-outskirts. Seems to have just grown organically. But the rotundas seem well-planned. Not all the streets are. Some are impossibly narrow. I got used to driving in it OK.

Before you can have self-driving cars, you have to have AI take over all the traffic control, just like in the original Italian Job movie. And once you have all the traffic controls looking down the street to see if the light has to change, you won't even need the self-driving cars because you will save so much on fuel, brake linings, and pinion seals for Suburbans, we'll be awash in credit.
You apply half the computing horsepower needed for self-drive AI to synchronizing traffic controls, and you'll never need another King's Acre worth of traffic circle.

A few modern manuals actually do the job for you and blip the throttle automatically on the downshift.
Although at that point, why? Just buy the auto if you're going to let the computer screw with the gas on you.

Cars are so good nowdays, that I'm OK with the computertranny doing all of the deciding.
I can concentrate on the line, apex and smooth throttle and brake stuff.
When I want to be more mechanically engaged, it's motorcycle time.
Add that 3d dimension which is the combination of lean angle, gyroscopic procession and slip angle, and now we're at a far more pure man/machine interface.

I made my daughters pay me to fix their cars by being next to me when I did repairs. They may not have learned enough to replace an alternator or do a brake job. But they sure as hell knew how to put a spare tire on. Hell one of my daughters walked her male cousin through trouble shooting his furnace problem.

Luckily she has forgotten how angry she used to be, but she still finds ways to be odious.
The good news is that it doesn't have to bother me any more. It is entirely possible to leave that behind you, and I do. I still take the fourth commandment seriously, but I also know that I can honor her and still not let her victimize me. I just wish she could be nicer to my son, but it isn't going to happen, so I let that go, too.

Wild strawberries are delicious and perfectly safe to eat. (Unless they're growing someplace that might be contaminated, like near a landfill.)
Those little wild ones are packed with flavor like no store-bought ones. When I was a kid my mom would send the sibs and I out into the field behind our house with Tupperware containers to fill, then we'd have strawberry shortcake for dessert. When I got older I started picking 2 quarts every year and making up the best strawberry jam ever, enough to last the year.
