Opening Day ONT

Yes, after a long, cold winter, it's that most magical of days, when spring is in the air and all things are possible. Opening day! Around here Adam Jones went yard in the 11th to give the Os a 3-2 win, how did your opening day go?

Yard.jpg
Going.....Going.....GONE!

And they'll walk out to the bleachers, and sit in shirt-sleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game, and it'll be as if they'd dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick, they'll have to brush them away from their faces. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game -- it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again.

-Terrance Mann

Read Another Book!

Some signs at the anti-gun rallys this week extolled the virtues of Hogwarts and Harry Potter. This made no sense to me. Didn't these people read the books they are claiming to follow? EVERYBODY in the wizarding world is armed ALL THE TIME, including young children. It's the reason they were able to defeat a totalitarian would-be dictator in the first place. These aren't new observations, this op-ed is 15 years old: Harry Potter, Market Wiz

Holy Cross Theology Professor Says Jesus Was a ‘Drag King’ with ‘Queer Desires’

What is wrong with these people? I realize that he's religious, but his religion is clearly leftism, not Christianity. What is it with Jesuits anyway? I know that Pope Francis is the first Jesuit Pope, and today he said 'There Is No Hell'.

My question was serious, by the way. I'm not Catholic, nor do I come from a Catholic background, but it seems to me that whenever something religiously wacky is said, inevitably the person saying it is a Jesuit. What is the deal with Jesuits? Somebody put me in some knowledge, please.

And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.” And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition!

Awful Prose

Sean Penn The Novelist Must Be Stopped

Sean Penn has written a book. It is being universally hailed as awful.

“Whenever he felt these collisions of incubus and succubus, he punched his way out of the proletariat with the purposeful inputting of covert codes, thereby drawing distraction through Scottsdale deployments, dodging the ambush of innocents astray, evading the viscount vogue of Viagratic assaults on virtual vaginas, or worse, falling passively into prosaic pastimes.” ― page 36

I confess my sins to the priest and take a deep breath, and lay the big one on him. I killed a man Father. He pauses, and finally says *Ok, for your penance, I want you to pray the rosary.*

Huh? I was dumbfounded. I blurted out, only one rosary for killing a man?!!

Yes, my son. Go and sin no more.

I just couldn't accept that. I said to him *No Father, its a mortal sin, its yuge!! You dont know what it feels like. Havent you ever killed a man??*

Hats off to the Padres - they played great D today. (So did the Crew.) And the pitching was very good. I see the Padres picked up Eric Hosmer - what a loss for Royals fans! He's one of my favorite players.

That's not so. Mainline Christian denominations all say the same thing. Take the Episcopalians for example. John Shelby Spong thinks that Saint Paul is gay. He'd have no problem affirming anything in the article you linked to. Neither would Katharine Jefferts-Schori or Thomas B. Woodward. There are other f*cked up churches such as ELCA's herchurch.org. Any emerging/emergent church leaders for that matter.

But to explain the intuition you have, there is the reputation that Jesuits are sneaky, sophistical to the point where they have lost their moral compass. I think they're trying to prove it to be true.

The day started sadly for long time Mets fans as Rusty Staub passed away today from kidney failure. The hero of the 1973 NLCS and WS, and a great philanthropist in NYC who raised millions for families of cops and firefighters who died and many other charitable causes.

But a happy game as Thor K'd 10 in 6 innings with no walks and was dealing serious heat although he supplied the power to a few Cardinals dingers. Mets bats came to life, even A-Gone looked good after he looked finished in Spring Training. Good first win for new manager Mickey Callaway

The old ladies in the front-row were screaming like banshees as the priest was stomping out the burning embers. I laugh my ass off every time he tells me this story.

Seems that the Holy Father's remark was incorrectly overheard, mistranslated, misreported, and the report was riddled with typos and spellcheck errors. Ibuprofen does absolutely nothing for my sinus headaches..

And sinus headaches are all up front.. like your eyes are going to pop out.. if it is in your head generally, it isn't sinus, in my experience.

For temporary relief, I stand in front of a boiling tea kettle with a towel over my head, breathing in the steam.. it is very temporary though.

Some people swear by netty pots.. where you pour warm saline water through one nose and it drips out the other.. never tried it.

433 So in honor of Puddles, some deep thoughts.

On Christianity: No leader, no Pope can get between you and Jesus. Religion is crap. Your relationship with Jesus is all that matters. Everything else is bureaucracy. That doesn't mean you don't go to church, it is the support and communication system for life in occupied territory.

On sex: Sex is a tool, not a destination. It is a means of showing someone what you feel about them. It's very, very, very easy to get hung up on the act, especially for guys. But sex isn't the goal, orgasm isn't the goal. Love is the goal.

On drugs: Nyquil and antihistamines make me feel floaty. YMMV.

Love you all, morons and princesses alike. Have a good Easter or at least a good weekend.

If your advice is "See a doctor and get a prescription for an anti-biotic," I can afford neither of those. But thank you anyway.

Rob a bank, then see a doctor and get a prescription.

I've been battling a sinus infection (deviated septum; play sports, they're good for you, coupled with allergies) for the last month (literally), most of which I've spent in bed (doctor's orders).

I just completed my fourth round of antibiotics, and starting to feel better, will attend baseball practice tomorrow to see if 1) I really am over it, or 2) the fucking thing flares up yet again when I exert myself. This after a month laid up, sleeping as much as possible, taking antibiotics, and doing nasal irrigations several times a day.

A cold does not last three weeks. A sinus infection does. Three weeks, or three months, if left untreated.

Srlsly, if you can't afford it, let me know, and I will endeavor to help. Sinus infections suck big time, much like strep infections, and are very tough to shake.

Though I largely concur, I admit also, there is room for both.

The latter would not exist if not for the former. And as a product of it's time, it was for then, perfect.

As is now, the version by Disturbed.

Which is best enjoyed, ironically enough, on a vintage "Silver Face" audio system, impeccably serviced and maintained, of at least 100 watts per channel RMS, feeding into speakers suitable both to the system itself, and the room in which they are to be placed.

What is this "real" world you speak of?
In what respect would a parish priest's world be less "real" than that of, say, a doctor or a plumber?

And even if you are talking about a sequestered monk, can you say with certainty that the contemplative life is less "real" than that of a stock-broker?

Of course, if you stipulate from the outset that God does not exist, I can see your point, at least as far as the monk goes. But still,.......
Is a peanut butter sandwich more real than a poem?
Is Ichiro Suzuki more real than Chief Wahoo?

Well, since Paul Simon wrote it, I suppose he did it as he wished it to be done. One can enjoy a cover of course, but without the original, it doesn't exist.

I tend to vicariously resent popular covers, as they tend overshadow the real artist's effort.

There are LOTS of examples. Often covers become popular because they get a lot of airplay on account the artist involved, and thus emerge as most people's favorites.

Example: I prefer Dolly's 'I Will Always Love You', but Huston's got the popular nod as a consequence of exposure.

I much prefer Emmylou Harris's 'Pancho and Lefty' to Willies's version, but 'Willie!'. So much for that. In that case, of course, Townes Van Zandt probably didn't mind.

532 I am on the verge of renal failure. I have stalled off the operation to form a fistula (the merging of two veins in my arm to create a vein large enough for hemodialysis) until June. I plan to do a different type of dialysis called peritoneal dialysis, and the fistula is a back up in case of an emergency of one kind or another. The renal failure is because of an autoimmune disease rather than my diabetes, since I have managed to keep the diabetes pretty much under control these past eighteen years. The only good thing about it is that it is not genetic, so I don't have to worry about that.

At age 69, I am not looking for a transplant. The dialysis will keep me going for a few more years. But there are thousands of much younger people, people with their whole lives ahead of them, people with small kids who would be devastated by the loss of a parent. Those are the people who need a functional kidney. So, like Ace mentioned, have it noted in your drivers license that you want to be an organ donor in case of something happening to you and get yourself into the donor program if you can. You never know -- you might just save the scientist that discovers FTL travel.

555 532 I am on the verge of renal failure.

BS.

Marriage is ordered for the good of the spouses and the procreation and rearing of children.

If you cannot decided to love, then you don't know what love is.

Love is not an emotion--that is romance, or even lust. Love is wanting the highest and best for the other, for his or her own sake. It means giving, even when you don't feel like it, because by doing so you can better the existence of the other. That includes spouses and kids and parents. All of 'em.

Romance is lovely, but it may or may not last. People who mistake romance for marriage are in for a world of hurt.

I am extraordinarily lucky, because I waited until I was 36 to marry the love of my life, my best friend, with whom I am still very much in love after 20 years. I know for a fact that this is rare, and I thank God every day for this outrageous blessing.

However, even without the romance, you do it out of love.

My parents will have been married 65 years this August. I don't think they had romance for many of those years, although they do now, and it's painfully cute.

Anyway, if you are talking biology, one part is the imparting of DNA, but the other part is the raising of the kids. That takes a bit more than a 2 minute commitment. Hence, marriage, and married love.

And it has nothing to do with the objectifying and self-love of homosexual "marriage" which is nothing of the sort.

559 Deplorable Jay Guevara: From a strictly biological point of view, if it lasts a few minutes, time to transfer the DNA, that's enough.

Or, you can do what I did as a kid in the '70s, and find some wooden dowel, close enough in diameter to whatever battery is in question, and cut it to the length of the pole-to-pole terminals.

Then, either source or build a 110 v. to ??? voltage converter, and solder the outputs to 1/4"x1/4" nickeled plates, affixed to the respective "positive" and "negative" terminus points on either end of said wooden dowels.

The "???" is because each battery is a 1.5 v DC cell, so if your radio requires three of 'em in series, it's a 4.5 v DC input requirement. And ETC, insofar as input requirements from battery powered devices.

Anyway, build the device, accordingly.

Now, you've got a 110 v AC powered radio, and no longer have to fuss with the short lived batteries of that era.

This is what Jr. High School kids did in the early '70s.

Except when you used it to light up the glow plug of a Cox .049 plane engine, that never really started all that well.
Thinking back, I'll bet the platinum wires in those glow plugs got "poisoned" by impurities in the fuel, and lost their catalytic properties. Same thing happened to the glow plugs in VW gas heaters.

615 As much as I'm griping about the batteries, these days things are much better. The old flashlights would run out in no time and batteries weren't cheap. The LED flashlights are tons brighter and running them with rechargeables makes them cheap as hell. And the little flashlights I have are almost all metal and have survived lots and lots of abuse, already.

All true. But, I find the color temperature to be sucky. I have trouble making out details with LED flashlights.

Yeah. Those cheap-ass plastic lanterns were really crummy. The silvering would come off the cheap plastic reflector, and the bulb would work loose, or the threaded ring that held it all together would slip off.
The really good lanterns were the ones that had metal plate that screwed down onto the binding posts of a larger lantern battery (both six and twelve volt existed). The lamp holder was metal, and the bulb was a small sealed-beam unit, like a small auto headlamp. Those were serious flashlights.
The small six-volt lantern batteries contained 4 size "F" cells, which were about 1.5 "D" cells each.

This man preaches the truth.

Which I realized when my neighbor effortlessly started the 0.49 in my Cox F4U Corsair, with the 6v. battery out of his early '60s Volkswagen.

We lived different lives, then. Many exclamation points and other punctuations to emphasize this fact, too.

648 To be fair the stuff we have discussed about confession has been hilarious, and mostly the sort of thing Catholics joke about all the time.

If we didn't have confession, man would we be screwed up folks.

I think that is one thing Luther took exception to--he hated having to admit he was a sinner, so he hated confession. Lutherans, however, did not all take that to heart. Oddly, some have confession again, albeit not sacramental confession.

There is a lot to be said for being forgiven.

And a lot of silliness that comes of the process, too.

so we are clear, I have a lot of respect for the catholic church, far more than most catholics probably. have spent as much time in catholic church or more on sunday since I married. have spent lots of time volunteering at and for catholic churches. the way catholics treat their church is pretty shameful. shameful enough that priests have roped me in to help out with services because they could not get any catholics to help out.

when you look at what is going on in the catholic church from top to bottom it is hard to think it is does not need criticism.

"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."
It doesn't make sense to think the government should own all the guns, and the citizenry should be disarmed. Firearms in the hands of the population at large would permit the formation of a militia, with the ability "do their duty". The guns aren't safe. They are inherently a danger and a warning. It takes about 90 minutes to do the whole thing. I do the trimming and such.

Want to read good stuff instead of the PC drivel and BS Jebby crap? Then read everything you can find written by Fr. James Schall (S.J.) There are a few books and lots of columns.

753 Greetings:

I grew up in the Bronx of the '50s and 60s and spent my high school years under the tutelage of the Augustinians. When college reared its head, they made me an nice offer for one one of their universities down Philly way.

My father was appreciative but seemed to think that I would do better with some of his closer supervision and my attendance it a local Jesuit school. Using all his sales skills he pitched me, "You'll like the Jesuits. They're like God's Green berets."

I believe that problem has been solved.
