One Flu Over the ONT

Hi gang. Since my nose has been going crazy the past few days, I've gone through lots of tissues. Not as many as this woman, however.

Kleenex.jpg

A.I.

So, does anyone play the Civilization series of games? I confess I am a big fan, I don't like to contemplate just how much time I've spent building my imaginary world. IMO Civ V was the pinnacle of the series, I just don't like Civ VI nearly as much. In any event, here's something interesting that I came across the other day:

How the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk’s Civ V mod should make us fear superintelligent AI

It seems that someone designed a mod that replaced the normal science victory – send a spaceship to Alpha Centari- with a new one where you have to develop a functioning A.I. Be warned though, if you don't take the time to develop AI Security while you're at it, well....

civ-v-ai-mod-620x300.jpg

In any event, it looks like a fun mod for Civ fanatics or for those fascinated with AI. There's a link at the link where you can find the mod.

Police are investigating a car crash that killed a zebra near the grounds of an ostrich festival in a suburb of Phoenix.

Phoenix? Sounds like Florida to me. Meanwhile, in Florida:

Golf Cart-Driving Florida Man Tries to Blow Up Neighbor’s Chickens With Home-Made Whiskey Bomb During Dispute Over BB Gun

And Now, It's Time For..

WHEEL! OF! JEWISH FOOD!

Ummmmm. Now I want deli...

Y'know, if I could only have 1 food for breakfast for the rest of my life, it would be a toasted onion bagel with cream cheese, sliced tomato and lox. Perfection in the morning.

Scientists unravel the mystery of the Roman 'gate to hell'

Rome was definitely my favorite stop in Europe. I didn't get to see this death temple (not least because it's in Turkey), but I saw SO. MUCH. in Rome. And there is still SO. MUCH. MORE. to see. Still, interesting article about ancients taking advantage of processes they didn't understand.

100 Sebastian, didn't know that. Thanks for the tip!

Right now the deals they're offering me for the All-Access Package are:

- Monthly, $25 a pop
- "6-month intro rate," $59.94 (including fees/taxes)
- "1-yr intro rate," $142.78 (including fees/taxes)

Well it isn't quite finished yet. There's an internal "gable" in the garage that has to be done, plus the two panels at the rear. All my rafters have had stiffeners' retrofitted; that was probably the most expensive and time-consuming job. Still to go: about a dozen collar ties, and some diagonal braces and gussets for the pony walls. Neither of those should be heavy-duty. But my time here is running short.

I refuse to even consider it just because of their annoying fucking calling to try to get me to subscribe when I got my car. Constant calls at random times that never left a message. I had to go an look up the number to find out it was Sirius XM. So when they finally called at a time I could answer I told them I wasn't interested and specifically why I had no interest.

A guy at work does use them and he mentioned doing the 5 month or 6 month plan at a certain rate. And they try to upsell him to just get the year plan. And its the same things others are saying, he's saving money by getting the half year plan than what the full year is. Talk about a model designed by and for stupid people.

182 The Civilization games just don't do much for me. I find the combat to be annoying with single units walking around and hoping that by the time they get where you want them, a century hasn't passed and your knights are suddenly facing muskets. The other sorts of advancement simply pale when you concentrate on them and someone easily crushes you militarily. I don't find the game balanced.

However, I did have fun annoying my neighbors by flooding them with missionaries and converting people to my religion.

Well, load some mp3's on a memory stick, plug it into the car radio, and see if it will play them. Some USB's are only power outlets.
If it will play the mp3's, you are way ahead in the game. Recording streaming audio used to be easy, until MacroSnot adopted that DRM crapola. Best way now, I think, is get a cheap-ass second computer, and load Audacity (freeware) on it. Stream the audio on your present computer, put a "Y" connector in the speaker jack, and run one line to your speakers, and another to the line in on your other PC. Once you get your levels set, you can record to your heart's content. And Audacity lets you edit the audio files, so you can remove noise, ads, and shitty tunes. Also very useful for cleaning up noisy records.

You can set up different 'channels' on Pandora - I have one for symphonies and another for trip-hop, another for movie scores, so I can switch.

You're right, though, music isn't the only thing worth listening to, but you can have the phone queue up radio show podcasts too. Those don't even have the commercials included, except for when the hosts start hawking beets and beet-related products. Which is always. But none of the broadcast ads!

"But that's not *real* genocide, we'll get it right next time!"

Real AI, should we ever achieve it, will probably end up playing video games all day and not cleaning up after itself, like real kids. Only faster.

In Scarface, they used the helicopter as a platform to hang Salieri by the neck. Pinochet's death squads would use an aircraft to fly over the ocean and just fling the commies out. Kind of like Mulholland Falls, only with the ocean instead of the desert.

Less cleanup with the ocean method.

The night (you know) that I fell in love with a Roller Derby Queen

She is a five foot six and two fifteen
A bleached-blonde mama with a streak of mean
She knew how to knuckle
And she knew how to scuffle and fight
And the roller derby program said
That she were built like a 'fridgerator with a head
The fans called her Tuffy
But all her buddies called her Spike
The night (you know) that I fell in love with a Roller Derby Queen

With this heavy-duty woman I been speakin' of
Things looked kind of bad
Until the day she skated into my life
Well she might be nasty she might be fat
But I never met a person who would tell her that

361 Like the pine trees lining the winding road
I got a name, I got a name
Like the singing bird and the croaking toad
I got a name, I got a name
And I carry it with me like my daddy did
But I'm living the dream that he kept hid
Moving me down the highway, rolling me down the highway
Moving ahead so life won't pass me by
Like the north wind whistlin' down the sky
I've got a song, I've got a song
Like the whippoorwill and the baby's cry
I've got a song, I've got a song
And I carry it with me and I sing it loud
If it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud
Moving me down the highway, rolling me down the highway
Moving ahead so life won't pass me by
And I'm gonna go there free
Like the fool I am and I'll always be
I've got a dream, I've got a dream
They can change their minds but they can't change me
I've got a dream, I've got a dream
Oh, I know I could share it if you'd want me to
If you're goin' my way, I'll go with you
Movin' me down the highway, rollin' me down the highway
Movin' ahead so life won't pass me by
Movin' me down the highway, rollin' me down the highway
Movin' ahead so life won't pass me by

Not anymore.
Posted by: His cellmate Bubba

Just got back from writing the letter that I will mail to cancel my citi card.

Anyway. This kid got out of prison a few years ago. He was a dishonest knowitall after he got out. He married some young girl and didn't tell her about his armed robbery conviction. That marriage, of course, fell apart. He died of a heart attack in his thirties. I'd bet money he was a cocaine addict.

His parents were divorced, and his mom was a teacher. She never held him accountable for anything. It's sad to see lives ruined because people won't learn from their mistakes.

But I meant what I said. That Hogg kid has the same look/attitude as the felon.

389 Okay, to defend the original Jumanji (and perhaps to bury it) -

I interpreted the original as making a point about Law and Chaos. Games are unreal, and reality needs to be defended. For the original movie, games bring about Chaos.

This is illustrated when the New England townies, when seeing jungle animals rampage through their town, go on a looting spree themselves. The Yankees become jungle animals too.

I didn't agree with what the original was trying to say about the gaming side of it. But I think the movie did express an interesting opinion.

The remake, by contrast, argues... I don't know what. As far as I know it is just "fun".

I used to read and comment at Rachel Lucas' old blog, the one where Bill Whittle started out as a commenter before he struck out on his own.

She eventually discontinued it.

Meanwhile, I was on LGF for a few years and the place was like home to me.

In the spring of 2007 things started getting weird, and I walked away when I started seeing all the regulars getting banned. It was with a heavy heart that I left.

So I deleted the LGF bookmark, and visited Bill Whittle's site. There I found Rachel Lucas announcing her brand new blog. It wasn't more than 15 minutes that passed between my leaving LGF and arriving at her new site. Talk about serendipity.

I almost forgot about the adware/spyware blockers/removers. I used to use them, then I discovered that browsing was so much safer running a browser such as firefox with adblock (block a lot of the ads) and no script (no javascript executed by browser, except by explicit permission (white list)).

Those two block at least 95% of possible infections, before they get a chance to take root. I suppose Avast browser shield helps some, too.

I haven;t used adaware or malwarebytes in years, except when trying to clean up someone else's PC.

Posted by: qdpsteve

I don't own guns, but I am fed up with liberals like yourselves who want to interfere in your customers' choices.

Gun control does nothing to address what is wrong with the people who commit murders. It interferes in the lives of law abiding people. The people least likely to be affected by gun control measures are the maladjusted people who commit mass murders. If gun control measures are passed, those people will still be maladjusted, and will simply use a different weapon.

But you people at CITI can pat yourselves on the back for pushing useless policies that won't accomplish anything. Well, that's not exactly true, you will accomplish the goal of feeling good about yourselves. And that's what this is really about, isn't it?

I've already destroyed the card and disposed of it.

Hi,
On an earlier thread I mentioned that I had enough. That was before I went to an office for a challenger to my local rep who is an (R). His daddy held the seat for decades. The rep himself is an vet. I don't care any more. This vet stood with Trump and supported the Wall. He voted for this monstrosity of a bill. Sell out. Unfortunately the challenger to the seat has no operation running at this time. Today should have been the day where any (R) challenger stood up and talked about this bill. This guy didn't have campaign material ready. The candidate should have been out there today talking about this. So now I wonder if the seat holder can be unseated. DH lives in my town. I believe he should lose his job for voting YES on this. I have never stepped for in a political office before. It was disappointing. Should I invest my life's blood into this?

I wrote him a nice email the other day telling him I ws going to vote for the first time in his district but that I have been voting for the past 35+ years no matter where in the world I was. i said if he votes for this monstrosity of a bill I would vote for a straight democrat ticket and to please don't make me do that. I looked up the voting record today and he voted against it. Now I don't know what to do.

546 792 As Rush said this afternoon, this omnibus spending bill was designed by both Republicans and Democrats to separate Trump from his base. That is exactly what it's purpose was.

They took Trump's 1st duty as President, which is to protect the American people and gave him his military spending. Then they laden it up with everything Trump has also fought against, that his base wants to see gone, and fenced him into a corner with it.

Trump only option, IMO, was to go ahead and sign this bill.

I still maintain that his tweet this morning was stupid. Suggesting he was going to veto the bill due to no Daca fix and not full funding of the wall, then coming into the room with his tail between his legs and then saying, I wont' sign a bill like this again, was truly stupid. Something I don't see out of him often, so I'm willing to let it go. But I hope this serves to show him that no one in Congress, save the few in the Freedom Caucus are interested in saving the country more than they are interested in making him totally impotent in the office by losing all the support he has in the public.

This has been a strange day. Hopefully, the chorus of woe will subside in the following days.

No one said this will be an easy task righting our ship, this is a setback in a long string of wins, and must be seen as simply that. We CANNOT lose faith, we HAVE to keep up this battle--stakes are much too high not to.

The man has the country's back--we must have his.

It is MY country and while I have breath I will defend it in whatever way necessary. Giving up is not an option.

Amid all the furor, remember this--We are Americans, so you hold that head HIGH and PROUD--we've faced comparable threats before and prevailed.

So will we prevail through this one. Because of who we are.

Yea, but Alexander had troops. Lots of active troops.

Obama has troops. The Left has troops.

Where are Trumps troops? Ya know, active troops. This stuff happens, bcz he doesn't seem to have any. And McTurtle & Ryan get this shit through bcz people aren't leaning on them, or complaining. Oh well, I've said this dozens of times and it pisses people off. Then those same people get pissed when they don't get the govt. they want, and don't understand why. Boggles the mind it does.

607 Trump said he would never sign a bill like this again.

I'm confident that struck almost everyone as odd in some way. There 3 reasons to be uncomfortable with it.

First, obviously, he can't make such a pledge, realistically. If he was "forced" to it this time, there's no natural process or law of physics that prevent him from being "forced" again.

Second, if he could make such a commitment for the future - why not veto this one, now?

Third, it usually communicates weakness, confirms defeat, to say "OK this once, but never again". Definitely so in this case.

613 But the current latest Trumpentweet actually suggests at least part of an answer to my long-standing question - what the H sort of advice is Trump getting from his legislation shop and any confidants he has on the Hill (and he has a few)?

He repeats his problematic pledge to never sign another omnibus. Then he says that to prevent any such omnibus madness again, he's calling on Congress to give him line-item veto power.

(face-palm)

One, they're not really related. At all. Two, line-item veto is a constitutionally dead-letter, has been tried and failed the test at court. (there's a theory that an acceptable *form* of the veto could be created, but I find it pretty dicey)

Some commenter here, starting a year ago, said he should make two pledges, *up front*, where it can become part of the process and more importantly the politics. 1) No more stopgap CRs longer than a week in duration 2) no more omnibus appropriations bills, period.

Presidential power has been greatly reduced by omnibus approps bills. Line-item veto is not a way to redress that. Only way is for a president to force a return to regular order in appropriations.

616 I'm too drunk/tired/bored to rehash the CR deal, so I'll leave you with Vox Day's take (emphasis mine):

Look, it's a mistake. It's not a betrayal. The winning was NEVER going to be unanimous or uninterrupted. Don't be like the conservatives and leap to embrace defeat as inevitable simply because ONE battle was unnecessarily lost. Or in this case, unnecessarily lost sooner than it would have been; Trump may have known that the Democrat-Republicans had the necessary votes to override his veto and decided not to waste his time fighting an unwinnable battle.

I think he should have for the sake of morale, but it's not my call. Regardless, this is not the primary front. That's my take on it. Be frustrated, be angry, but do not despair and do not give up.

Posted by: dDan at March 24, 2018 01:00 AM (

Uh-oh. An open question. So fair warning: I is now gonna answer. People may not want to read.

I gave up on people being as active on the right as they are on the left, after a year of seeing no change in that pattern.

Someone posted DJT needed to get his MAGA candidates lined up or organized. I about fell on the floor laughing. Yea, in his free time, he'll get on the road and do that. But that's the mindset people have. He's supposed to do it all.

Anyway, to me DJT was a holding card, to give people time to get it together and change things. It ain't happening.

Someone knocked that into my head a few weeks back. Told me to just enjoy these days and not care. I'm too "concerned". On this Board I was told that.

Still sad though, that people won't get off their asses and do the hard work of a democratic republic. And of course, my despair at things like the Omnibus bill. Even though I expected it. But hey, promised to keep my mouth zipped about trying to motivate people.

Just don't want to hear people bitching if they did nothing to help prevent it. Thus, my thread absences. Bcz they don't want to hear me tell them to get off their asses and make calls, et.al.

Illegal immigration should have been our call to action. It wasn't. I thought Trump would be. It is not. So, that's my answer. And JMO, of course.

Working through my grief, so still some venting. I'm only human. But trying to bury in late night ONT, so as not to upset people.

So, in that way I do apologize. For not being able to totally shut myself down yet. But I is working on it. I promise. Disappointed in self I haven't gotten there yet.

631 So tonight a mutal coworker invited my GF to a party.

M GF was like "he only invited me, I don't want to be bringing extra people when it's not even his house."

To be fair, my GF is a mildly autistic Engineer and has lots of trouble with social cues. She honestly believed that.

I am friends with this co-worker and know that the house belongs to my coworkers GF, who I also know, and I told her it's cool. She reluctantly accepts.

While at the party and playing drinking games a random girl with big tits keeps flirting with me. Shes not less attractive than the GF, but her tits are way bigger and she's taller too (GF is 4''11 petite & a lil insecure about it)

Nothing happened, big boobs girl was just giving me the eyes all night and ran over to give me a big hug goodbye. That's it.

Now we are back and going to bed and the GF is pissed at me for allegedlh flirting with some skank which I didn't do. So I'm out here typing a comment.

Fuck. We were already fighting about her idiotic ideas of moving to SanFrancisco because "muh silicon valley"

Sorry for the rant. I feel better now.

633 Well there at least two general ways to approach things like this. One, lots of drama, lots of personalization (which I always find bizarre), about "betrayal" and the like. Also, claims of the end times matched by equally unsubstantiated "can't win 'em all" stuff.

Another way is to look at what's actually happened, and likely to, and what it might mean. The "winning" has been almost exclusively in areas were presidential authority is sufficient to make changes w/out Congress.

Appropriations are by far the most important part of the process. Money.

The 2 very discouraging things are the ballsy repudiation of almost all key Trump priorities, save DOD, that the Hill GOP is willing to present, and that they won by forfeit, essentially. There was no fight. Pretty confident there was no fight behind closed doors, either. And there sure as hell was no over-ride number lined up for a veto.

Many here foresaw that Trump's greatest obstacle would be the GOP. Helluva challenge to change your own party enough to make it work with you. But in this election year, I see nothing being done or planned to change the GOP (the outstanding throw-downs with Flake and Corker, which Trump won, are the glaring exceptions ..... but they look like a couple of one-offs).

There's millions of us who voted Trump. Millions. If only a small percentage became active in between elections we could have stopped the illegal immigration. We could prevent what is happening now. So I disagree with that assessment.

Yes, all over the world people sit and resign themselves and then wonder why they have the government they do. It's mind boggling listening to Americans bag on Britain for letting things get so bad; and, I think to myself, what the hell do you think we are doing here? We are doing the same stuff! I don't know, I don't get it. The blindness to our same actions and faults. The refusal to fight back. I just don't get the rationalization and resignation. But in this day and age, I guess that is my character flaw, and my problem. I need to find a way to make peace with it.

670 flounder, haven't kept up with the line-item veto thing, just know that when it was actually passed it failed a judicial test (not saying that was a correct ruling, but I don't think it was the sort of absurd, indefensible and lawless rulings we now deal with).

In any case this kind of veto is not the answer, and wouldn't solve most of the issues with omnibus madness. It would go some way to restoring presidential power, but not enough, and it would do nothing to solve Congress' successful elimination of politics from politics since 2009 (very few actual votes of importance, and almost none on appropriations).

That Trump would bring up this idea in a tweet denouncing omnibus spending bills just suggests to me that he's not getting competent support.

I salute you sir. Truly. Your generation, if I'm remembering your age correctly, was very active. And if I was your age I would probably feel like, well hell, I've busted my ass and now it is time for others to pick up the baton. I think of the stuff I've done too, ( but I think my generation has dropped the ball and mostly just voted.)

But I'm getting off tangent now. I still hold, that if a percentage of the millions of DJT voters got it together, we would make a difference. And I'm sure of it. But it is easier not to try. It's all a moot point anyway.

This PhD in chemestry jefe would harangue anyone who supported candidate Trump. His desire, if not his ability, to convince or manipulate was enormous and painful. His appearance meant that the blog comment section was his shitshow for the next few hours.

Regardless of his intent, the challenge of coming up with a definition of -troll-that did not include him would require the most deliberate pretzel contortions.

He would wear away the patience of everyone here, myself not the least. The failure to remove him seemed like a symptom of an problem big enough to destroy a blog, even one as awesome and vibrant as this one is.

I look at other sites with comments sections, weekly standard, NRO et al, and I see how they poor they are to resisting. These fuckers are autistic noise fountains that you can fly circles around if you are a little smart about it. Easier to beat than liberals. It is telling.
