Went there back before the flood with 10 year old daughter and 11 YO niece. on Canal ST. -near, but not in the French-mequarter. Westopped at a bodega for a coke, at the checkout counter was a rack of necklaces, each one made of a dozen lifelike penises w/ sack, painted in natural colors. I called bullshit to the clerk who looked like he just finished his curry, and the heat had rendered him incapable of understanding English.

I watched a recreation of a federal sting operation against NOPD cops. The sting took place in the late 80s I think. They actually had audio of one of the cops ordering a hit on a woman who made an official complaint about the cops beating up her son or neighbor's son (I forget which).
The hit was carried out by a gang member. They also had audio of the cop receiving news she was dead, and he howled with glee like an animal.
Same cop was being paid by the undercover to watch a warehouse the undercover was storing his drug shipments in. The cop recruited several other NOPD officers to help him do that. They demanded a car to sit in so they didn't have to run their cars all day to have A/C. The feds provided a minivan and put listening devices in it and caught several cops plotting to kill the undercover and take over his drug business.
New Orleans is a shithole, and I doubt the NOPD is any better today.

Time and temperature is completely different. It's a much lower temperature - usually in the 140 to 160 degree range. Slower cooking.
You're vacuum sealing the juices in. I also add some additional flavoring to the bag before sealing like wine, butter, lemon juice, bacon, bbq sauce, etc.
Like a pressure cooker leaner cuts of meat take longer to make tender.

In that case 'finishing' is an option. Take your finished protein, heat up a fry pan, throw some butter in, and give it a quick sear on both sides. It actually helps to restore a more natural finished color to meat.

They are better today, and it only goes to prove that Katrina was in fact the best thing to happen to New Orleans in the last hundred years. You remember how the National Guard had to be brought in to police the city for over a year after Katrina hit? It wasn't publicized because it was so embarrassing, but when outsiders came in and started looking at things, they ended firing the entire police department and having to rebuild it from scratch.
I remember one particular incident - immediately after Katrina, federal officials were amazed that 300 or more policeman listed as being on duty had apparently disappeared, and everything was critically understaffed. It turned out that New Orleans had been receiving large grants of money from the Feds that were based on a per capita police head count, and so the City Govm't had created 300 or more "police officers" who existed only on paper. The Mayor, the D.A., and the Police Chief were splitting the extra cash from this between themselves, of course passing along some to their personal henchmen in each area. (Who can break a conspiracy that's being run BY the DA and the Police dep't??)
And that's just a small tidbit of how corrupt New Orleans was before Katrina.

Depends on what kind of work. Most of the refinery/industrial plants are in those small towns. If one can pass a drug test the most menial jobs start at $50k/year. Equipment operators easily hit 6 figures.

No - that would be bad tactics for Trump. You don't march into a defeat when you know it's coming, you find a way to sidestep it gracefully. To put it in military terminology, Trump does not have the forces to win this one, and a defeat would embolden his enemies in all of the other battles he's fighting. There are sound reasons why all strategists strongly advise against getting into a two front (or 3 front, or 5 front) war. You can't effectively prosecute any of them, and they all start to feed on each other and coordinate their attacks on you.
Trump has begun making bold moves with his staff. He had got to defeat the Mueller probe and win the November elections and get a new Senate before he can do anything more. And if he loses the Senate, then everything gets much much worse.

I've always thought Northwest Louisiana is more like Texas, and Southeast Texas is more like South Louisiana. When we lived in Bossier City, it seemed like there was an article in the local paper lamenting none of the money from the government ever made it north of I-10. That area has a thriving movie industry. It was just starting to take off when we left. I haven't been through since the flood. The last time I drove that way, I-20 was nothing but dirt. I hope they've finished the construction by now.

The difference is in earlier days, Chicago had enough industry to attract people despite it's corruption. If you were a blue collar guy with a decent paying job at the meat-packing plant or in construction, you could overlook the shady dealings of city hall. Now that industry has dried up and Chi-town is left with gangbangers on the South Side, yuppies on the North Side and a flood of illegals. If they work they're doing jobs the white ethnics used to do.
But New Orleans never had heavy industry to offset the corruption. In some ways, it's more like a Caribbean city than an American one. Some very wealthy elites, lots of really poor people, massive corruption, an exotic atmosphere that attracts tourists (that makes it a cut above a complete shithole like Port au Prince) and good restaurants, but crime-ridden and a crumbling infrastructure.

That may be the part of the calculation the GOP hasn't considered.
Sure, they'd like to neuter Trump by forcing him to sign a Porkulous that funds all the wrong things.
But Trump has only one way to increase his power and that is to veto. Every other way diminishes him.
Force them to override and call the Senate's bluff.
He holds his base, and those who choose to vote for override are exposed to the voters.
Could spell the end of the GOPe, in that it would outrage voters to the point of a bloodbath for the party.
I dunno, it's clear they want minority status. I don't know if they want to be hated.

A few writers (John Barry, for one) have made the case over the years that New Orleans should have been the natural choice as the city to be the center of the growing Energy Industry during the 20th Century. But, they were insular and corrupt, focused inwardly on themselves and resistant to any newcomers with new money and new ways. So, the energy industry instead became based in Houston, which really had very little going for it 100 years ago. Now Houston is the 4th largest city in the US and one of the wealthiest cities in the world, while New Orleans is still just same old New Orleans, a bit worse for the wear.
Houston is what New Orleans should have been, but rejected.

A guy from my old unit told a story about when he went through Ranger school. One of his classmates was always chewing, and the instructors were sure that he had pogy bait stashed in his gear. They'd rip everything apart trying to get at it.
Then they realized that he was only chewing after adjusting his bootlaces.
He'd replaced the laces with 550 cord, which was common. What wasn't common was that he replaced the inner strands with thin licorice strands.
Dood got a minus for eating pogy bait, but also got a plus for ingenuity.

Causation. I've lost 37 lbs on SouthBeach, which is low-carb, low-sugar (not exactly like Atkins or paleo, since it restricts fat intake - "good fats" only - and fruit, which contains sugar.)
I thought I would hit a plateau at some point but I'm still losing weight steadily. My body is responding well to the absence of carbs and sugar.

I had our son while we were stationed there. So, I have good memories. It was an easy drive to visit my parents down in TX too. They had just finished the riverwalk while we were there, but they were having trouble keeping tenants in the storefronts. Right before we left, the postal service stopped delivering mail to part of Shreveport because it was too dangerous. The residents kept shooting at each other.

Same thing here! I kept thinking "why am I spending 4 or 6 hours to cook veggies and eggs when the results taste no better?"
I thought steaks were pretty good - but you have to sear them at the end so you're not eating gray meat. It's an unnecessary complication of what is normally a pretty easy thing - just throwing steaks on the grill.

You don't have to stick to rare, at all. Also, for steaks you want to finish it even if you do like rare. You can do cast iron, a searsall blowtorch, or even my favorite, a charcoal chimney that's still flaming hot.
Also, don't do butter in the sous vide bag. Tons of people will tell you to do it, but I've done extensive taste testing with myself and others, universally they all pick the steak with no butter in the bag as the better steak.

So, how does sous vide work? And why is it so much better than traditional cooking methods for some foods? Allow us to explain. Yeah, Pina Bausch is a German choreographer ex-dancer whose stagings often include loose fitting clothing that the dancers fall out of. See Tanztheater Wupperthal, Rite of Spring (le Sacre du Printemps).
Molissa Fenley is a modern dancer choreographer whom I was privileged to see doing her famous topless thing in the 80s in NYC.

My steaks are as good as John Howie.
Cut open any steak at home or at even a moderately good steak house. There will be a grey band around the perfect pink middle. My steaks don't have that. Edge to edge perfection.
Sure it takes an hour to cook, but all it takes is a tiny bit of planning. I put in water in the tank in the morning and can heat it up from an app on my phone. Then an hour before I'm ready for my perfect steak, I toss it in the water.

He got killed by his own bodyguards, accidentally. Fun story -years ago, I was on a trip through Baton Rouge, took my grade school aged daughter on a short tour of the State Capitol (beautiful building) and we were in the vestibule just off the main lobby, and this man walks out of an office, see us looking at a picture of Huey L, and says "yeah, this is where that cat got himself shot". You can still see all the pockmarks in the marble walls of that room, they're everywhere. So he tells a bit of the history on the shooting, then takes us over to the House Chamber and shows it to us, and then said "well, I got to get to work, very nice talking to you!" He never introduced himself, but on leaving I looked up at some picture of the current leadership, and realized it was the current Louisiana Speaker of the House. A very nice treat!

He was more of a populist. It's difficult to understand him without the context of the Great Depression and the shape Louisiana had been in for decades leading up to it. When Long was first elected Governor there were 400 miles of paved roads in Louisiana. Four years later there were 4,000 miles of paved roads.
Today they can't even add an extra lane to one mile of interstate in that time. Would I vote for him today? No, but his historical significance is important. He shook things up when he went to DC.

I live in IL and have registered to vote at least half a dozen times in 5 different counties over the past 30+ years. Not once have I ever been asked to state a party affiliation at the time of registration, or been obligated to stick to that party affiliation.
In IL primary elections you do have to choose either the Republican or Democratic ballot, and which ballot you took is part of your voting record. It was my understanding that you are free to choose either the Republican or Democrat (or other party if there is one) ballot in a primary regardless of how you have voted in the past. Since independents, by definition, don't belong to a party and wouldn't have primaries, how would you register as one? Am I missing something here?

Using sous vide, they can precisely put the burger to temperature, keeping it in the medium rare range, then do a quick sear on the outside for flavor.

Burger King used to have the ultimate process. Precision sized raw hamburger, precisely timed conveyor belt, flamed on both sides simultaneously.
The lines used to stretch out the door and up the sidewalk. Half an hour wait was common.
Now I've read they microwave the burgers.
They probably had some leftist neighbor sue the franchise because of the incessant scent of perfectly cooked hamburger going up the chimney made them get fat.

Independents still vote in 'primaries' because many, many tax and constitutional issues are done in the spring and fewer people vote in them so it is easier to get a tax passed with activism because people do not want to declare a party by requesting a ballot.

Now, Botero is not my usual cup of tea ~ but I do appreciate him. And his brushwork, use of color and updated Goya~esque approach to subjects is something to see ( especially in person ~ pictures do not do the paintings justice) I do not like his sculptures though. It si not the same in mono color in three dimensions.

I watched the press conference yesterday with Short and Mulvaney. Not only did they detail what the Republican's got out of the budget deal, such as funding for 156 miles of wall, that includes both new sections and rebuild, remodel of sections of a secondary wall in San Diego, but they also pointed out what they didn't get. And why. They explained , not nicely either, that the Senate is NOT under Republican control, because the rules require a 60 member majority to pass spending bills, which means at least 9 Dem Senators have to vote with ALL of the Republicans. So you have to give things to the Dems, I believe Mulvaney used the term, "buy Democrat votes". They also said that if the line item veto was available today, there would have been many items that Trump would have vetoed out of the bill. But it's not , so that is not something he can use.

Galveston was Texas' largest city before the hurricane of 1900 hit it but it was already on its way to losing that status. The corruption associated with the Port of New Orleans was duplicated in Galveston and Texas was being throttled because of it.
A US senator from north of Houston named Thomas Ball joined with William Marsh Rice to convince city leaders to join them in a push to create the Houston Ship Channel in order to allow commerce to bypass Galveston. Sen Ball was able to get federal funding for the massive dredging operation to get a channel deep enough all the way to the confluence of Buffalo Bayou at the far north end of Galveston Bay. Ball had been instrumental in getting rail service to Houston that fed the port. The city of Tomball is named after him and Rice University was founded by WM Rice.
What lured the oil companies from locating in Beaumont 90 miles to the east was the opulence of the Courtlandt Place development south of the center of the city. Courtlandt Place was initially built from the wealth of the massive lumber industry that was churning north of Houston in what is known as the Piney Woods.
