Game Over? Teacher Says That For First Time In Her Long Career, a Class Has Refused to Pass Judgment Against the Human Sacrifice Depicted in Shirley Jackson's Cautionary Tale "The Lottery"

Via Instapundit, an absolutely chilling sign of the end times.

Shirley Jackon's "The Lottery" is a staple of middle school literature textbooks. It's about a rural town which conducts a lottery before harvest season. The surprise twist at the end is that the "winner" of the lottery is ritually murdered by stoning in order to guarantee a good harvest.

Per Wikipedia, when the story was originally published in the New Yorker, readers were so angry about it that they cancelled subscriptions and wrote hate mail to the magazine and the author.

An overreaction? Of course. But in 1948 (when the story was published), the public was at least educated enough to know that "The Lottery" was a story about a sick and repulsive practice.

Fast forward to the ugly now, when our Little Monsters think they're super-educated by ninth grade but are so feral they don't understand this story is supposed to be about unambiguous evil.

Then in the 1990s, something started to change dramatically in how her students responded to the sobering tale. Rather than being horrified by it, some claimed they were bored by it, while others thought the ending was "neat."

When Ms. Haugaard pressed them for more of their thoughts, she was appalled to discover that not one student in the class was willing to say the practice of human sacrifice was morally wrong! She describes one interaction with a student, whom she calls Beth:

"'Are you asking me if I believe in human sacrifice?' Beth responded thoughtfully, as though seriously considering all aspects of the question. 'Well, yes,' I managed to say. 'Do you think that the author approved or disapproved of this ritual?'

"I was stunned: This was the [young] woman who wrote so passionately of saving the whales, of concern for the rain forests, of her rescue and tender care of a stray dog. 'I really don’t know,' said Beth; 'If it was a religion of long standing, [who are we to judge]?'"

"For a moment, I couldn’t even respond," reports Ms. Haugaard. "This woman actually couldn't seem to bring herself to say plainly that she was against human sacrifice. My classes of a few years before would have burst into nervous giggles at the suggestion. This class was calmly considering it."

At one point, a student explained she had been taught not to judge, and if this practice worked for them, who was she to argue differently.

Appalled by the student’s moral indifference, Ms. Haugaard concludes, "Today, for the first time in my thirty years of teaching, I looked my students in the eye and not one of them in my class could tell me that this society, this cultural behavior was a bad thing."

"The Lottery" is available online, though I caution you: No judgments.

19 Meh. Part of the outrage in 1948 wasn't that human sacrifice was offensive -- it was that it was equating that capricious, vicious brutality with traditional religion and traditional mores.

The fact that people are losing grip on the metaphor and treating the actions literally is depressing on two fronts. But it doesn't make the original genius or anything.

And by the way - on one hand I am supposed to be worried by what the hyper-judgmental SJWs are doing with the mush-filled skulls of the teenagers and on the other hand I am supposed to be horrified at the cynical and jaded non-judgmentalism of teenagers.

The contradiction is um, kind of patent.

That might be true but the basic point is this is a trend she began noticing twenty years ago and has culminated, finally, and a completely amoral group.

I have no problem believing this is true. The hive-mind is especially strong with these kids as well, so what the teacher was told by one person would probably be replicated in other conversations.

100 Yeah but its all theoretical to them. Even the main girl quoted "wrote passionately about saving the whales" so clearly she understands the value of at least some life and absolute value judgments. She just retreats into vain and vapid arguments about being non judgmental when confronted with something new because that's what she's been raised to do.

The cardinal sin of today is to make someone feel bad, so kids are taught to never, ever have any strong feelings or question anyone else lest they feel bad. Even when its patently obvious they ought to.

If you never learn to think, if you are never trained to make reasoned, analyzed judgments discerning the facts and understanding the consequences, then you fall back on memorized and trained patterns. Even if they are utterly contradictory and absurd.

Its not that kids are incapable of making value judgments, its that when confronted in the theoretical realm, they are not trained to think.

That might be true but the basic point is this is a trend she began noticing twenty years ago and has culminated, finally, and a completely amoral group.

No, I don't think they are either amoral or fucking with her. These kids have been conditioned to know not to judge others publicly their whole lives, and that is the worst sin. Look at the quote. The girl says "if it is a longstanding tradition, who are we to judge." Does that remind anyone here of any longstanding religions that frequently commit immoral acts in the name of Allah? Oops. Gave that one away.

108 Hey, why not... These kids have no moral bearing. They're willing to countenance Islam. They're willing to countenance (and vote for) Hillary Clinton. They're willing to countenance the attempted overthrow of a duly - elected government by a rogue intelligence apparatus, because their side didn't win.

All values are of equal value to this generation, and only the power to apply values matters.

That said, they have no inherent power, and we do. These adult children are weak of mind, body, and morals.

So when we exert our power, I don't want to hear any g-ddamn mewling and whinging about how it's "wrong."

I'm saying this, and I'm only 34 freaking years old. The teacher is right... something has changed dramatically in a short time. We may need to consider more-or-less permanent internment for the young. This generation is a serious net - negative to society, and they grow more detrimental by the day.

If they believe in the law of the jungle, then let's let them have it.

I know people mostly these days think of the teaching of human evolution as logical and rational compared with creationism, including most of the crowd here.

But consider the implications. If evolution is the base for which I give all children to understand their existence, than humanity is little more than just the latest arbitrary step in the grand cosmic accident, with no more or less importance than a cockroach in the grand scheme of things.

Is it inconceivable through that lens that I could arbitrarily value the life of a blue whale more so than that of a human, given we both have the same relative value? Worse yet, we follow on by classifying the human being as a pernicious blight that threatens all the other species and the globe itself.

195 I've had an ongoing argument/discussion with my friends many times over the last few decades...What good has the Catholic Church ever done? My response has always been that it provides the basis for morality. Good and Evil aren't fictional concepts. There's a difference between good and evil, right and wrong, truth and lies. The Church has done a pretty good job of emphasizing the fact that good and evil exist. If the world turns atheist, it will only take a generation or two for the concept of good and evil to disappear completely. And that's when anything will be acceptable.

261 The story really has nothing to do with human sacrifice or the morality of stoning.

From the last words of the person who "won" the lottery, the lesson comes out:

"It's not fair. It's not right."

This story teaches the difference between what is fair and what is right.

Was it fair? Of course. Perfectly fair, no favoritism, no cheating.

Was it right? Of course not.

The story shows the stark difference and leads to discussions on other things that are fair but not right. People can take that in a thousand directions from democratic elections to affirmative action.

264 The one book that SHOULD be required reading in all Junior Highs or High schools is "Anthem," a short novella by Ayn Rand. By far her most "readable" book, and also shortest. And also less confusing. "Anthem" is a devastating condemnation of collectivism; once you read it, you can never accept communism or totalitarianism as your world view. Ever. It's like a permanent inoculation against later attempts at collectivist brainwashing.

The plot envisions a future society where there is no single-person pronoun. Everything is "we" and "us." The government banned the words "I" and "we" in an attempt to socially engineer away the personality trait of individuality. People grow up thinking themselves part of a hive, not as separate entities.

But then, needless to say, our hero discovers an old book that has the word "I" in it, and everything changes.

283 Meh.

Oh, it's possible, and I wouldn't put anything past those barbarians, but what I've read years ago suggested that maybe they were just wicker dolls and not actual things to put people in (or something along those lines).

I mean... There are some foreign practices that would be easy to misconstrue, and even easier to demagogue and intentionally demonize. History isn't just written by the winners, but by the survivors.

The survivors generally also have an interest in not being totally honest, too, for that matter.

297 Coincidentally - Ace posts this today, on the feast day of St. Wolfram.

In Frisia, the custom was that people, including children, were sacrificed to the local gods having been selected by a form of lottery at festival time. Wulfram was told that the king was unable to change the custom but Wulfram was invited to save them if he could. According to the story, the turning point came with the rescue of a man, Ovon, who had been chosen by lot to be sacrificed by hanging. Wulfram begged King Radbod to stop the killing, but the people were outraged at the sacrilege proposed. In the end, they agreed that Wulfram's God could have a chance to save Ovon's life, and if he did, Wulfram and the God could have him. Ovon was hanged, and left for a couple of hours, while Wulfram prayed. When the Frisians decided to leave Ovon for dead, the rope broke, Ovon fell and was still alive. Ovon became Wulfram's slave, his follower, a monk, and then a priest at Fontenelle Abbey.

I realize that that JD Salinger was partly misunderstood with respect to what he wrote about, and he personally did not ask for the adulation that has been heaped upon it.
But......really?

And then, JD Salinger ends up in the book "Shoeless Joe", which is the novel that the movie "Field of Dreams" was based on. Actually, the movie is better than the book.

I use modified socratic method in my classes. Students hate it because I do not them them what to think nor hint at what I believe. I also do not let them stop with the facile reply from authority as if the status of the person uttering the speech determines it truth or lack thereof.

The problem with education becoming credentialism is that a lot of students just want to do the minimum required and get the stamp of societal approval. Thus, tell me what is the approved answer so I can repeat it to you and get my good grade becomes their thinking process. Iconoclasts in class become the enemy because it clouds what might be the teacher approved answer and can introduce complexity. Two feet bad, four feet good and so forth are what some want.

While we were reading "The Lottery" and absorbing the message Fair wasn't always Right, the children in the Soviet Union were reading stories that promoted the theory that Fair (as in idealistic communism) is Right.

377 To be fair, human sacrifice was frowned upon by the Romans fairly early in the Republic. It was never used by the time of Caesar.

They buried a couple random foreigners alive during the 2nd Punic War, and I'm pretty sure a couple Vestal Virgins after that.

The gladiator games evolved out of funeral sacrifices and continued to have an implicit religious function until they were finally banned well into the Christian era. It is worth remembering that Rome - physical city and state - was a deity in Roman thought. Yes, the Romans literally worshiped the State.....

This generation has largely been insulated from the actual impacts of their decisions. I will leave one small exception for those lying in the most recently used section of Arlington, or fighting in combat. They get it, they've seen it.

Beyond that, this is a generation largely coddled by liberal teachers, media organizations and politicians who make them believe, falsely, that actions have no consequence, truths are just unpleasant thoughts, material experience or history that destroys their supposition is "fake" and they can "will" any potential thought into "reality".

They are headed for a crash with reality because they've been raised to be delusional. That won't, and shouldn't, end well.

384 That "judgement thing" has become way distorted, and people say they get it from the bible.

Long story short, during the Paterno thing, message boards everywhere were saying not to judge him or the other involved cowards. I was in shock. Watched it for 3 days, and then had enough. And these were frickin' college students, and perhaps some adults.

So, in my usual way, I decided to lay down some hard facts. Like what the bible stories teach, and about judgement in society, and blah, blah, blah. I didn it nicely, even though I wanted to call them all fvckin' idiots.

Anyway, there were no more posts about not judging. And when there were, someone would respond how that was wrong. So my work there was done. Heh.

No one is teaching kids how to think. Even at college. Once someone did - me on a fvckin message board - it changed things.

Do you know how pathetic that is? I should not be teaching anyone anything. But it also shows they are receptive to learning and the Socratic method, if someone would bother.

This is not me saying look at this thing I did, this is me saying how bad things are at a college level that they thought they should not judge the raping of little boys and the cover-up. And no one was telling them different. Until my big fat Gorilla ass had had enough of crazy group think.

The Moses story was the exact opposite. He was set adrift specifically in order to save him. Had he been kept in the home he would have certainly been killed.

And I'm really not sure about "literary" device, thing. The story of Moses was a complete one with all parts being important - his being a Jew and his being raised in Pharoah's house. Not to mention that it was written as an historical piece, not a work of fiction.

Lois Lowry is a decent YA writer. The Giver is part of a quadrilogy, but I think the first two books are the best. The last two fall into open borders territory that is naive considering the issues sovereign nations faces vis a vis unfettered, un vetted immigrants who come in for welfare, etc.

But I haven't read all the comments, and it's been a while since I read the story or saw an adaptation. The play version I did see (I want to say it was a high school production) ended with the crowd throwing wadded up pieces of paper at the "winner" (presumably subbing for rocks), and that kinda killed the tension or whatever.

We've become very Harrison Bergeron-ish with the micro-aggressions and privileges stuff. We can't have/do something because it offends a certain group of people, effectively hobbling the people who are privileged enough to have/say such things. Instead of physical chains, there are burdens or "privilege" that one is automatically discounted.

Just look at the reviews of "A Wrinkle in Time" being dismissed because the reviewer is a white, male, so he can't understand/is automatically assumed to be hostile toward a black teen girl-centered story.

Do you know how pathetic that is? I should not be teaching anyone anything. But it also shows they are receptive to learning and the Socratic method, if someone would bother.

by: prof disarray, gumdrop gorilla

gumdrop, in Paul's letter to Timothy, he tells him not to let those who are older to despise him for his youth, when he (Timothy) is knowledgeable of the Scriptures, and able to teach them the Gospel of Christ. I think your example above shows you to be in that same category. Teach away.

This is interesting because I completely respect it and have also experience the complete opposite.

One of the most powerful statements I ever heard from a teacher was a poli.sci. TA who said "this is my confession of bias" on the first day of class. (She was a Reagan Republican, in a place and time where that was controversial).

I can see the merits both of disclosing bias and not admitting to it.

I'm sure a lot of boomers have that connection, but objectively it is a good story to force young people to consider that kind of situation, the ethics of it, and how a culture can go bad and consider how to deal with it.

Because it happens all around us, every day.

A lot of the stuff we 29-year-olds (well 52) take for granted, few children that age have never encountered or considered before. So its useful to help them learn through a device like that instead of someone in a uniform kicking in the door to drag off a family member for being the wrong sort.

Jackson would be shocked at the morally bankrupt response of contemporary teens. She would view their indifference to life as the most horrifying thing of all.

In case you were wondering, those students described by the teacher are just the sort who can pull the lever on the gallows or pull the trigger on the prisoners lining the ditch, and it looks like we're turning out a whole generation of them. It won't turn out well.

498 The real difference between now and yesteryear is that humanity has basically conquered its material needs.

Yeah, the basic struggle to survive took up so much energy and time people had less time and energy for stupid and crazy. And the really pathetic losers and incompetents who refused to face reality tended not to live to breed or influence anyone else.

Its true that the world has always been an awful place, at least since the Fall. Our sin takes different forms at different times, but its always constant.

What has changed in the USA at least is that evil and crazy is being not just accepted but codified, embraced, celebrated, and empowered.

We had different evils in the past (cruelty to the different, slavery, mistreatment of women, etc) but it was always wrapped under a veneer of an attempt to be moral and follow objective, absolute standards of behavior, which were very powerful in restraining the worst of evil in most cases. Today all that restraint is gone, all the structures the nation were built on are torn down, and nothing has been put in its place other than the ever-changing Jell-O of progressivism

The Romans exposed unwanted (usually disabled) babies because they thought it barbaric to kill little babies outright. It was considered impious, an affront to the gods. By leaving the baby outside, the decision about its life and death was left to the gods.

You might compare this to our own practices. We think it okay to dismember a fully-formed, viable baby in the womb. Indeed, we hold it as a sacred 'right.' But we still (for the time being) balk at killing newborns outright, even though by doing so we could avoid inflicting pain on the infant.

Remember: the slippery slope argument is not a fallacy because it is wrong but because it does not refute one's opponent.

In other words, if someone argues that we should legalize homosexual marriage... and your response is "that will lead to greater evils"... that's a slippery slope fallacy.

Its not that the greater evils argument is necessarily false, its that the argument does not refute the opponent. Its just a statement of potential danger.

Logical fallacies are errors in structure and approach, not absolute statements of falsehood.

Posted by: bicentennialguy at March 20, 2018 03:10 PM (vg8iE)

523 What scares me about the left's "non-judgmentalism" is that it's a command and control botnet.

The mushy headed people run around in a default state of non-judgmentalism of everything. Then they get a signal from the command servers telling them they are now judgmental of X.

Then they release their rage on X and everyone associated with it.

It doesn't matter that they didn't care about X at any point in their lives up until one nanosecond before the signal, now they are convinced it's the worst thing ever.

See the left's fascination with the emoluments clause and Trump. Before the signal went out, they didn't care about it. Then they're told it's the worst thing ever. They don't even do a rule check to see if the new rule makes sense against past behavior they applauded. They also won't apply this new rule to people of whom they approve. It's a narrow and flexible ruleset.

You can even spoof these bots for a little while, up until they get online. That's how you get people signing petitions to end women's suffrage and ban Dihydrogen monoxide. But as soon as they get online, they check in with the C and C servers (HuffPost, CNBC, Reddit, etc) to see if the signal really came from the left.

554 Learning to think reasonably and logically is a skill, it is something you have to learn. People aren't born with it, they are merely born with a greater inclination or disinclination toward it. Most can remember the point in their life when things fell together like a Lego "click" and suddenly they could make more sense out of life. They had the tools and knew how to use them.

Modern public schools and the left's education philosophy does not want to, and does not, teach kids this skill. They shun it as being a bad thing, and push children away from it.

Lacking this skill, this is what you get.

571 I think this is partly a result of secularism: regarding humans as animals. Mice and fish sometimes eat their young. Male lions kill the cubs of other males when they take over a pride. Chimps have no pity for their old or infirm and will beat them to death in competition for food.

We don't seek to train these species to behave better. So the same principle applies to humans. If you see Muslims beheading people who believe differently or beating their women, that's just how that species of animals behaves. Or Indians burning their widows or instituting a caste system. Or Maori or certain African and South American tribes engaging in cannibalism.

To pass judgment on these cultures would be like looking down our nose at various species of animals. So sit there, assume the lotus position and repeat to yourself "their culture is no worse than mine. My culture is no better than theirs. We are all animals" over and over again.

Of course it's self refuting, because that in itself is a moral rule. If I reject it and want to be a hard assed deontologist, none of the relativists can condemn me, because I'm just one more species in the zoo of humans classified by ethics.

Too bad for them. Because those that try to be good, fall short, and try again KNOW evil, those that live in a life of moral relativism have no idea what true evil can be, and are more easily lured into it without realizing it.But hey, they have or wish for thousand dollar Apple X iphones. The story needs to be updated so that students can relate to it. Say, make it a bunch of whites stoning a black man. I'm pretty sure the students would be horrified. Flesh out the lesson plan by mixing up the cultures and genders; see what it does take to make students horrified. This actually could be a good 'teaching moment' to get students to think about what morality really is.

596 I'm amazed that 50 years ago, reading this story in junior high school, it was a clear and obvious lesson in the difference between what is fair and what is right.

The main point being driven home by person being stoned, saying as their last words: "It isn't fair, it isn't right."

Kind of a dead giveaway right there what the theme of the story is.

However, in the past half century, social justice warriors have bent the meaning to try showing how communities scapegoat individuals to cleanse their collective sins.

Bullshit.

The stoning aspect was purely for shock value, to make the story crystal clear in it's messaging. The lottery was absolutely fair. The townspeople took great care to maintain the integrity of its preparations and avoid event he appearance of bias.

But it wasn't right.

In the 60's, people pointed to a new program designed to make college admission more available to blacks. It touted how much more "fair" things would be.

But it wasn't right.

There are multiple examples of things every day that people can point to where to make them "fair", they wouldn't be right.

Communism, in it's purest sense, appeals to society's sense of fairness. What could be more fair than the government owning everything and distributing based on need?

But it isn't right.

50 years ago, we knew how to take the central theme of a short story for what it was.

599 I think I read The Lottery when I was either a freshman or a sophomore in high school back in the Dark Ages. To me, the ending was like a slap in the head. The start of the story was so normal -- a small town farming community preparing for the spring planting season. Then boom! The horror of the stoning and the total acceptance by all parties that it was necessary for the community to survive. No one stoning the woman bore any malice toward her; it was simply the way things had always been done.

I don't think I've ever thought of The Lottery as some sort of metaphor or containing a hidden meaning. I've always interpreted it as an extremely well executed short story by a talented and skilled writer. But then, when I read it, dystopian literature was an every day occurance. John Hersey's White Lotus, Whatzisname's Canticle For Leibowitz, a bunch of others. Science fiction, as distinguished from fantasy, was particularly dark those days, too.

Don't mistake me: Those kids uncritically accepting the end of the story bothers me. Has our culture become so coarsened that our kids cannot recognize an evil when they see it? I'd like to think my kids and grandkids would be able to say that killing the woman was bad.

Posted by: Deplorable Lady with Only Two Deplorable Cats at March 20, 2018 04:44 PM (FDGIm)

600 You miss the point. The students are "non-judgmental" because they've been very effectively taught that you'd better not be on the wrong side of something like this and that there are no set rules in place to know which side is the "approved" side. You have to wait for your teachers or others in leadership positions to tell you where to line up. Thinking on your own is dangerous. This is the truly scary part.
