The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“When men choose not to believe in God, they do not thereafter believe in nothing, they then become capable of believing in anything.” G.K. Chesterton

Quote II

“Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your self-confidence.” Robert Frost

Quote III

“You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And what I mean by that is an opportunity to do things that you think you could not do before.” Rahm Emanuel

Do you have a vacation in Germany planned? Be careful, there are No-Go areas. Unfortunately, Germany's Chancellor won't say where.

BERLIN — German officials have been left speechless by Chancellor Angela Merkel’s comment that there are “no-go areas” in the country.

The notion there are places in Germany outsiders — including police — can’t visit has previously been dismissed by officials.

Lately, it seems like the news has been full of "emotional rescue support animals What does science have to say about this?

But what does an emotional support pet actually do, and does the designation really mean anything?

Forensic psychologist Jeffrey Younggren from the University of Missouri put it bluntly to Business Insider: Scientists don't know if such pets do anything "other than make somebody happy," he said.

Younggren has spent years studying the growing trend of clients asking their therapists to sign letters certifying that they need an emotional support animal.

"The research is quite inconsistent on whether the animals really do anything at all," Younggren said.

Love him, indifferent, or hate him. Patrick J. Buchanan opines on the Parkland, FL shooting.

In days gone by, a massacre of students like the atrocity at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School would have brought us together.

But like so many atrocities before it, this mass murder is tearing us apart.

The perpetrator, the sick and evil 19-year-old who killed 17 innocents with a gun is said to be contrite.

Having confessed, he faces life in prison. For the next half-century, Nikolas Cruz will be fed, clothed, sheltered and medicated at the expense of Florida taxpayers, including the families of those he murdered.

A Swedish woman faces prison and the wrath of the Muslim world.

A 32-year-old woman from Gothenburg could be locked up for 2 years after making some Facebook jokes about Islam, Swedish newspaper Friatider reports.

According to police reports, the woman is charged with “talking in a negative or threatening way about a group of people” after she posted cartoons about Islam on Facebook.

The ONT Musical Interlude

March 5, 1982, Actor and singer John Belushi died from an overdose of cocaine and heroin. Belushi was one of the original cast members on US TV's Saturday Night Live, played Joliet 'Jake' Blues in The Blues Brothers and also appeared in the film Animal House. His tombstone reads "I may be gone, but rock n roll lives on." via thisdayinmusic.com

Talk about a waste of talent.

Falling into the category of, "You had one job to do!" Surgeons, brain surgery, ooops wrong patient.

A neurosurgeon and medical team opened a patient's skull last month to remove a blood clot in the brain and came to a startling discovery: There wasn't one.

Kenya's Daily Nation reported that staff at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi had mixed up two patients' identification tags before the surgery.

One patient required brain surgery to remove a clot, and the other needed treatment for brain swelling. The staff had been operating for hours before they realized the mistake.

Once a creep, always a creep.

The Colorado State House voted overwhelmingly Friday to expel a Democrat member accused of sexually assaulting at least five women.

Fellow Democrats led the charge in a 52-9 vote in favor of the expulsion of Rep. Steve Lebsock, marking the first expulsion to occur in over 100 years, KDVR reported.

Mischief in progress. I bet it wouldn't be mischief if it was their home being vandalized.

Hamilton police spent most of Saturday evening on Locke Street investigating damage caused by a group of about 30 individuals, dressed in black clothing with their faces covered, who walked down the street carrying a banner that said, “We Are The Ungovernables.”

The group began setting off fireworks and smoke bombs, damaging vehicles and throwing eggs and rocks at store windows and homes in the neighbourhood.

*****

Florida. How does a deputy sheriff lose his job? You have the right to expose your breasts.

TALLAHASSEE — A sheriff's deputy in Florida was fired Saturday after being accused of coercing a ride-along participant to show him her breasts.

Leon County sheriff’s Deputy Jarrett Broughton was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was hired by Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 4, 2016, and had no other disciplinary issues with the office.

“The Leon County Sheriff’s Office has a zero tolerance for its employees violating the public’s trust," Sheriff Walt McNeil said in a statement. "Once we became aware of the situation, we took immediate action to investigate the allegation. We take our obligation to protect citizens seriously and any abuse of power will be met with swift consequences.”

(The Italian thinks the Doritos are too spicy.) Of course, it could just be because they look like they are about 16 and 16 year old boys will devour any damn thing put in front of them.

If I do get out there, it will be a golf vacation at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon. Airline travel will have to significantly improve for me to make that trip though. Funny story. Clark AB was being pushed to close by the Philippines in the late 80s. Anti-Americanism was popular then I guess. Anyway, one night, I'm at work and get a call from a panicked airmen who advised me the Mt. Pinatubo had blown its top and they were evacuating the HF station there. The US government decided to close Clark AB. The cleanup just wasn't worth it. All those commands and air wings stationed there moved to Guam. The Philippines all of a sudden didn't want us to go. Its like they realized that now, they'd have to clean up that mess and all those Yankee $$$ were now leaving. Oops, be careful what you wish for. You just might get it.

It's strange to me that one big like is getting water for free in restaurants without having to ask for it. I know that's not done in Europe but you wouldn't think it's such a big deal. It's cool to watch them marvel over the wide open spaces, shoot guns, cheer at football games and basically show much more gratitude and appreciation for America than many Americans do.

And even in some places where there is less open appreciation, one often finds a focus, sometimes bordering on obsession, with American respect and approval, or just an obsession with America period. Resentment from insecurity seems much more common than antipathy.

And it goes far beyond "interests". In places that are officially hostile, there is often a poorly disguised focus on having America's respect.

Having made enough visits there I think im qualified to state that they do not like or respect Koreans, just tolerate Japanese mostly like and respect Germans and Aussies. Love Americans and everything about us and our country. Filipinos acknowledge our generosity where America-hating Marxist tools will never. 253 148 Read the comments on the CBS special on schools in Israel. There are a dozen people calling BS on the idea that Israeli teachers are not mostly armed.

Apparently CBS went shopping and found the one school in the safest lefty neighborhood in Tel Aviv that supposedly had no armed teachers to "prove" that there are no guns in Israeli schools.

Didn't smell right to me at first, and less so now.

263 And even in some places where there is less open
appreciation, one often finds a focus, sometimes bordering on obsession,

are officially hostile, there is often a poorly disguised focus on
having America's respect.

280 I've read the Philippines is one of the most pro-American nations on the planet.
--------------------

The Philippines has had an unusually close relationship with the US due to its status as an overseas possession. *Most* of that has generally been positive, with the notable exception being the attempt at independence shortly after the US took control of the islands from the Spanish (it was put down by the US military). After the uprisings were bloodily put down, the islands generally flourished under US control. And US and Filipinos fought side by side against the Japanese in World War 2. The islands were granted independence shortly after the end of the War.

327 In the land of mid-range steaks, Texas Roadhouse has the best cuts of beef, but Outback is superior in the seasoning and cooking... and their cuts aren't very far behind Roadhouse, either.

Biggest rip-off in the steak market is Lone Star Steakhouse. Frankly, I think they buy the bargain cuts from Omaha Steaks. Tiny wee things, they are.

Ruth's Chris is an 1,800 degree broiler. Same with Morton's (for sure) and (I believe) for Smith & Wollensky.

It's the combination of insanely high-end cuts of dry aged* beef, some subtle, deft seasoning, and that Heat of an Angry Sun broiling process, that makes the high end steakhouses so very special.

*aged long enough to make you wonder how they keep it safe to eat, actually.

And then on top of it all, it's the marketing, presentation and "high end" experience of it all. Sure, you're paying $100 per person, after steaks, sides and a couple glasses of wine.

But even the heart-stopping bill, is a part of that "high end" experience.

You'll damn near certainly convince yourself that it was even more special that it was, merely to self-justify the expense.

Unless you're on the Corporate Expense Account, and then it's time to upgrade to the sixteen ounce filet, of course.

364 So Merkel won't name the No-Go zones, hm?

I will. In Berlin you want to avoid the districts of Wedding (north-central, and yes, that really is its name), and Neukolln (south-southeast-ish). In Frankfurt, the area right around the train station is okay during the day but not really anywhere you want to be at night; same goes for some of the western neighborhoods, which are basically slums. Munich is generally okay, as is the Altona section of Hamburg, and I guess those are the big draws anyway. Best to keep in mind, though, that even if you're not in a no-go area, the cheap public transportation system (not that that's a bad thing) makes it easy for random acts of cultural enrichment to happen anywhere.

So, have fun with that.

Of course, it was precisely the wrong age for me (can't do NUTHIN legally at 16 in that town!), but my Dad was the gambler. Of course, we stayed at Circus Circus (which a buddy of mine renamed "The Clown").

When I finally became legal, we would stay there when staying in Vegas, because cheap.

During my many trips to Sin City, we have stayed at Lady Luck, Rio, Harrah's, Imperial Palace, MGM, Excalibur, Luxor, Orleans, Wild Wild West (yikes), Arizona Charlie's, a Motel 6, and Planet Hollywood.

It has been two years since I was last there. Lately I have preferred the Orleans, but these bullshit 'resort fees' are driving me away.

Deplorable Ian, cool! Which place would you say is, or was, the best value in Vegas?

Posted by: qdpsteve at March 05, 2018 11:36 PM (eMKNe)

It depends on budget and what you are looking for (duh).
When we would drive into town (i.e. have a car), and go cheap, we would stay at the Manor rooms at the Clown. They were not in the main building, and the rooms were bigger. But, the rooms were old. Some people can't/don't like that. I can tolerate clean, worn out rooms. Downside of the Clown is that it targets the lowest budget, and is full of screaming kids, and crowded, and NOT classy. LOL.

Orleans caters more to the locals. It is off the Strip, is reasonably priced (or used to be), and has a huge bowling alley (!!!), like more than 40 lanes(maybe 60?) UPSTAIRS, along with a large multi-screen cinema. And we would heck out the minor league hockey at the arena when the Wranglers were there.
I spent a couple nights at the MGM. Very high end. Super nice facilities.
Vegas is pure capitalism when it comes to hotels and prices. Off season/non-weekend, cheap deals. Something going on in town (big fight, convention, etc.) you pay through the nose, eeverywhere.

446 One quick Vegas at the Clown observation.

Was at the Clown (Circus Circus) one Friday afternoon paying craps. I was standing next to the dealer, drinking my free alcohol, playing my one or two numbers with double odds, watching the hot chicks/skanky chicks go by (because I'm a raging hetero male). It was pretty quiet - not too many folks there.

It's starts to get towards late afternoon/evening, and people start arriving. I realize that these are the LA/SoCal people. It's Friday, they are getting off work, and spending the weekend in Vegas. (My understanding is that it's abut a 4hr drive.) They are incredibly anxious to gamble, get drunk, and whoop it up.

Before long, the place is crazy, and it's rocking at the Clown on a Friday night. LOL. The cocktail waitresses are younger and prettier during these shifts, and they are feeding me drinks quickly because I always tip them.

By this time, I'm hammered, and enjoying the spectacle.

Pretty funny.

One of the "west side" (west of highway 101) areas in the Paso Robles wine region in central CA is known as Adelaida. For the Aussie miners, most from Adelaide, who lived in the area and worked the mercury mines. Beautiful lake in the area has a no-fishing policy, due to mercury content of the water. (or so I've read/been told)

496 Is hogmartin here? Meant to tell everyone:

Things are okay about my car. I went back to the dealership yesterday, and they did need me to re-sign documents, *but* to avoid any unpleasant surprises on my end, they actually reduced the price of the car, so nothing will change on my end. My monthly payment, term, and extra goodies all stay the same. So if the dealership ended up with a better interest rate somehow, no biggie.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for all the advice, particularly hogmartin. :-)

I now have this urge for sashimi and no orca to be seen. And I really need this after today.

Wally World has gone bug-fvck. I really don't know who's knickers or panties got twisted but they dragooned every free body from the GM side to tackle softlines, so.. it was putting out thongs, camisoles, bras, socks, and assorted blouses.

Then my torture was not over, oh no. About 8pm I was told to work OTC/Pharmacy freight. Asst Manager said 'your area looks fine.' So off I went to deal with 5 hour energy drinks, tampons, Poise, Depends, and hygiene washes.

Or I just need a drink. And a new job or win the Powerball.

Anna - check out the still photos at the site. The paint color on the aircraft (check out the early WWII paint scheme, too - the striped rudders are great) looks remarkably intact. I have seen some unbelievably well preserved war artifacts that spent decades in salt water, so there always seems to be the possibility of low oxygen content or other anomalies that prevent corrosion.

536 Well red as you know, finding these things can be pretty difficult (sunken ships), even when last known positions are available. Sometimes of course because "last known positions" are incorrect - as was the case, I think, with the USS Indianapolis, which Allen's team found last summer. I think the key was a long-forgotten routine sighting report from an LST going the opposite direction, which placed the Indianapolis off the accepted course.

545 MH, the other team was on fire and way over average. We didn't lose by much each game, but we lost. It is what it is, we had fun. I remember one night on a mixed league we were bowling this team who one of their women bowlers who had a 99 average. Her handicap was 110 pins. While she was bowling us, throwing a 10 pound plastic ball straight up the middle, she shot a 279 game. Scratch. The only time she didn't strike she left a five pin and picked it up. With handicap she shot a 389 game. All you can do is give her a high five and move on. And good on her, that's the highest game she will probably ever bowl in her life. Frustrating for my team, but exhilarating for her.

Then at Midway, they though they had sunk it twice. And if the truth be known, the American victory at Midway had more to do with luck than skill. It didn't make much difference, a win is a win. Later on, it was more skill than luck.

578 >> Perfect orbital insertion.

Do they still smoke cigarettes afterwards?

---------------

You want some good space erotica, see the tale of Apollo 14, Alan Shepard and the tricky docking probe. The CM - LM docking thingy was complicated. The docking maneuver required the CSM to turn around, the slowly penetrate the LM's port with it's probe. Then, some automatic hooks would take over and joining would be achieved.

Now, Shepard tried that, which had worked before, but no good. CSM just bounced off. They had him try it again, with a little more speed, poking it harder. Still didn't work. So they had them take pictures of the probe. On the ground, they decided that the initial hooks just weren't working right.

So they had Shepard just gently, slowly, insert the probe into the LM's tight tricky virgin port, just the tip, gently. Then they had increase the thrust, steadily, but gently.

That did the trick, and they mated happily. Now, second time around, redocking in lunar orbit, it popped right in the first time, like it's supposed to.

580 rickl - that's very cool, and interesting. Ice cream while waiting to abandon ship? I seem to recall that only carriers and battleships had ice cream machines - and the "reward" for destroyers returning pilots who'd had to ditch on landing/take-off was a few gallons of ice cream, roped over the same way the pilot was returned to the carrier under way.

585 I started to read a newish book on CV-2 until the author pushed me to stop reading.

First in a preface he lists as a source blog entries. Two are listed in the bibliography.

He has Sherman conning Lex during the attack and how the Japanese had a new tactic of coming in from both sides. In Hoyt's book on the Battle of the Coral Sea, Blue Skies and Blood, CV-2's air group is attacking Shoho from both quarters. I would need to check out and reread The First Team again I think.

Weirdest bobble of all and the one that made me put the book down concerns footnotes.

In the Prologue the footnotes start with 4 and at the bottom it talks about the B5N Kate torpedo bomber. And we get to footnote 8 about Commander Lexington Air Group. Then there is a formatting break as the author changes focuses and there are only two more footnotes - 2 and 3. There is no #1 footnote in the prologue.

Chapter 1 starts with footnote #9. We see 10, 11, 12. There is a call to a 13th footnote in the text. But there is no 13th footnote. But we then have a 14th footnote.

So I closed the covers on Phil Keith's book Stay the Rising Sun.

Like you I have become somewhat intolerant of certain things in books, and will drop them. Last one I can recall was actually one of the two major books about post-war chaos and strife in Europe - can't recall which one (either "Bloodlands" or the other one). After a few instances of ridiculous, and oh so contemporary, false moral equivalence in the narration, boom - gone. And this, from an "historian". Total lack of perspective.

Given an unlimited budget, what would be your choice for a piston powered, single engine NON warbird, General Aviation aircraft?

Mine would be the Grumman Commander 114 Turbo, replete with air conditioning.

Piper's original Malibu airframes were turbocharged piston singles, too. Higher flying, but not as speedy. Those were some of the first "Cabin Class" singles, too.

Still, the Commander sings a Siren song. Wide body four seater, with smokin' hot performance numbers.

Very far above my pay grade. But that'd be about the Grail for me, were I to achieve but a private, High Performance and IFR ticket.

Beyond that, it'd be hired pilot(s) and me along for the ride.

Yes, the rocket puts the satellite into a highly elliptical orbit, and then the satellite uses its own maneuvering thrusters to gradually circularize the orbit and "park" over the desired spot on Earth. This usually takes a couple of weeks or so.

605 May through June 1942 was a close fought battle between the IJN and US Navy. The advantage was to the IJN. What they didn't know was that we were halfway to breaking the JN25 naval codes. We lucked out at Midway more than many people know. Yes, we got our carriers into Point Luck at the right time, but the Japanese timing for bringing their planes back to the carriers, and the total failure of American coordination of attack actually worked to the American's favor.

I'm "staging" my way through Glantz's massive book on the Red Army, '42-'44. Taking it in limited portions because it's more like a physics textbook than a history book, and footnotes, endnotes, you want exhaustive documentation? Jeebus. As I tend to frequently check the notes, it only adds to the slog, thus the strategy of reading 150 pages at a time, broken up by entire, more readable, WWII history books.

Jim - my answer would not qualify, probably, because single engine/piston, but ..... seaplane. Not *that* picky. Grumman Goose would be fine. Or Mallard. Not the showy sort, but a PBY would be OK, too.

Which reminds me of that web article I saw last year on luxury outfitted/converted PBYs, which were a thing in the 60s (?). Now THAT would be acceptable. Especially for the single globe-trotting Catalina owner. Imagine the chick-magnet power of "just take a water taxi to the seaplane moored next to the big yacht - it's the only one here - or anywhere, actually" (James Bond smirk).

Posted by: rhomboid at March 06, 2018 01:38 AM (QDnY+)

611 Hypo could read 10% to 15% of JN-25 before Midway when the IJN finally changed the key. But that was too late as events proved.

Reason they could read that was because the Japanese kept reusing words so it became statistically easier to read their mail. For example Midway's Japanese codename.

16 and 17 operating separately did save Enterprise and Hornet. With the meager size of the VF units any Wildcat sent to escort the bombers was one less to defend the carriers. And Yorktown paid the price.

Though if Stanhope Ring had found Nagumo or if Fletcher had thrown his reserve Dauntless squadron into Spruance's all out attack, Yorktown would have probably survived the battle.

614 Anna Puma, footnote nazi. I admire that in a scholar.

You hear a lot about how tough or not the initial training and academic experiences are at the military academies, and how they just won't let you fail as an underclassman. The big difference between the academies and our very expensive state community colleges is in footnoting and accreditation of papers.

Part of it is plagiarism avoidance, and the rest, isn't. You learn how to cite references, how to evaluate references, and everything there is to know about the filing of same. You can write a brilliant paper but get a warning and then a fail if the documentation is not perfect. And if you can't learn to do these things right, that will be your ticket out. That's how dead serious they are about, literally, proving your point.

So if a military historian's credentials are from an academy, a command school, or the war colleges, it's unthinkable that their reference-proofs aren't damned near perfect. You'd have to suspect their publisher's editors, if such things still exist.

Hypo could read 10% to 15% of JN-25 before Midway when the IJN finally changed the key. But that was too late as events proved.

But that was key. The US knew where they would strike next. They really didn't know the order of battle, but they had a clue.
The Americans had a good grip on the Japanese diplomatic codes (Purple) but not the Naval codes.
As an aside, the Brits had help breaking the Enigma code because almost every operator finished his transmission with the words Heil Hitler.

But it's interesting that with all the intelligence, that no one knew where the Kido Butai was. Having been a Morse Code operator I knew that I could identify an operator by his "fist". As I understand the history, the Kido Butai operators were left in port so that American operators listening to their transmissions thought that they were still at Hokkaido. 645 I seem to remember that Gazebo pictures of any kind were against the rules here. They might cause hardons; at least I think that was the reasoning at the time of their banning. Or maybe it was because they tend to make one think of gentle summer breezes, and half-naked girls running along the beach. In any event, I thought that I should mention this to you so that we can keep the high moral standards of the ONT intact. Personally, I don't mind seeing a gazebo picture, not that I would actually look at one and think about an intoxicating rum-based beverage or anything.

736 ALH! You won't see the now, so I'll put it in tonight's ONT too and hope you see it then.

I am only about half-way through reading the wonderful cookbook, but guess which recipe I have inserted a bookmark in? (Well, okay, a Kleenex .)

Not only that, I already have the ingredients to make it! Hope to make half at a time.
