24 Wouldn't surprise me to see some Flake/Kasich ticket that's just done out of pure spite to throw the election to Democrats.

Its going though to be nearly impossible to get Republicans to abandon an incumbent Republican president, but if they even take 1-2%, it could be a problem.

Apparently Flake thinks "free trade" is the most important issue of the day and why Trump needs to be stopped.

74 There's actually a good reason personally for him to run - he's already not running for Senate, so his contributions have all dried up. BUT by running for Pres, he can hoover up millions and millions of Never-Trumping donations from the big GOP millionaires who want open borders (the Bush Donors, mainly) and then, when the campaign collapses after the first couple of primaries, any good campaign lawyer can show him a way to put alla those extra unspent political donations straight into his own pocket.

ever wonder why Herman Cain was so happy about running, even though his actual campaign flamed out so badly? One decent campaign and anyone can get set with enough millions to last a lifetime.

________

What's funny is the "Flake" family is almost like a Kennedy dynasty in AZ.

Jeff really has been groomed for a long time to be some sort of big deal politically. Until Trump.

What's odd is the guy started out being a genuinely "good" conservative in the mold of Goldwater. Took fiscal issues seriously, pushed real reforms.

But he has an obsession with amnesty more than an actual illegal immigrant living here. He can't get past it and ultimately it destroyed his career.

Paul Ryan at least pretends to drop the open border stuff.

Last I looked, there was a pretty solid prima facie case, based on actual data, that NH was stolen for Hillary via same-day vote registrations that appear to have been fraudulent (voters did not register car, get DL, or otherwise appear on NH public document radar in the months following Nov. .

You have the PA illegal non-citizen registered voter story (which is almost certainly an underestimate). You can only *imagine* what those numbers are for CA (or IL, or NY).

You have the inadvertent exposure that MI basically has no election integrity whatsoever. "Recount" kabuki revealed that largest jurisdiction/vote resource, Wayne County, had more than half their precincts unable to meet the first, most basic metric of vote integrity (roster at voting place matching ballots/votes at voting place).

Thanks to the genius of the electoral college, presidential elections (well, besides Kennedy in 1960) have not been stolen (which doesn't mean states like MI may not have been stolen some cycles since 198. House and Senate and state-level offices, however - oh yes, there is every reason to believe the fraud is material to those outcomes.

Here's my Easter Egg

Debate, Politics, and NeverTrump

amgreatness.com

CPAC 2018 has come and gone, and with it, NeverTrump has met its Waterloo.

Whereas in 2017, there were still those willing to indulge the urge to keep a rhetorical distance from President Trump, or otherwise to downplay his significance to the resurgent Right in America, now almost nothing of the kind survives. Instead, the conference featured moments of nigh-explicit surrender by previously anti-Trump conservatives.

Ben Shapiro, for example, had to admit sheepishly that he didn't see Trump's commitment to conservative governance coming, and then had to launch into a detailed genealogy of how political correctness' overreaches had spurred its own messy death, implicitly at Trump's hands. Mark Levin, meanwhile, went from barking at Trump to "cut the crap" to sternly instructing the CPAC audience that it was "our obligation to defend [Trump] and defend this office."

one can keep the donations but only to use to pay the campaign bills and perhaps to donate to others OR save them to campaign again.

Posted by: rhomboid at February 28, 2018 03:01 PM (QDnY+)

The Electoral College IS genius, for so many reasons. Quite apart from the Founding Fathers' motivation, it compartmentalizes the vote, so that as in the 2000 election, only one state's votes - not the whole country's - need to be recounted.

Further, it reduces the utility of electoral fraud. Where is such fraud most likely to take place? In a state that leans heavily toward one party, which can look the other way at fraud. But there's not that much point in running up the score, since that party's candidate will already get that state's EC votes anyway.

GOPe would rather lose the Oval Office - to regain unquestioned control of the Party.

Which they accomplish by running people that remind the rest of us what a bunch of pathetic losers they are, and why we voted for Trump the first time.

205 I always thought that about the campaign donations.

but it's not quite so straight forward.

one can keep the donations but only to use to pay the campaign bills and perhaps to donate to others OR save them to campaign again.

It doesn't go directly in anyone's pocket.

That said; there are a thousand ways for that money to wind up where the candidate can control it and use it for themselves or others.

I mean look who wrote the rules about that stuff?

Once you've got millions of dollars sent to your cause, its incredibly easy to find ways for it to filter back to you.

People will then do things like set up their own consulting agency with their wife or kids as the owner and have the campaign over pay for services.

There's so many ways you can play this.

A political consultant here locally in AZ (Sean Noble) was taking millions from the Koch Bros for "conservative" causes but skimming millions off the top for himself through various shadowy companies.

Huma called her easily confused, there was that weird probable seizure she had in a press scrum, there was that time she got tossed into a van, and who could forget the medical lenses she had to wear in public!

She's a Clinton. Everything she does is carefully considered for how it would make her look. She wouldn't have worn those glasses unless they were completely medically necessary.

Yep, you've named the easiest. Wife and kids go on the campaign payroll, and of course because of their "great experience" they each get a salary of $500K per year plus full benefits.

Another way is to set up a tax free charitable foundation that all campaign funds can be transferred to, which as it's "charity" does things like pay for all the family members travel expenses, including flights, hotel stays, and food, anywhere in the world.

I do think though Trump's in good shape getting reelected as long as the economy keeps humming along. The Democrat bench is weak.

My hope is the few holdout Republicans from 2016 are finally won over by Trump.

328 ethanol subsidies are the political bribes that the coastal states have to pay to the corn states, especially Iowa, because of their position on the primary schedule.

and now that they're swing states, neither party can afford to aggravate them, even though everyone knows as a matter of policy the ethanol subsidy is idiotic.

whenever the political wars die down - 10, 20 years - these will be dropped because 90% of the country hates them and knows they are simple bribery, but til then we're stuck with them, because the corn states are holding leverage over the election seasons.

After Dalton High School principal tried to get in to the classroom, Randal Davidson fired a shot through an exterior window of his classroom.

"It did not appear that it was aimed at anybody," Dalton PD spokesman Bruce Frazier.

...
Frazier, asked about why Davidson fired shot, said he hadn't heard the officers' interviews with Davidson and won't speculate.

Incident occurred during Davidson's planning period (no class ). Principal had walked through hall during that planning period and saw Davidson working at his desk with his door still open.

Frazier: "It seemed like he didn't have any intention to harm anybody else."

Reporter: "We had a tip that he had some type of episode or something a week or two weeks ago."

357 Is there any pressure within the Mormon community to censure Mormon leadership for supporting illegal immigration? And if not, why not?

LDS people for the most part don't try to pressure their leadership. There is a small vocal minority, sure, but not most of us. When we say we believe they're chosen representatives of God, we're pretty serious about that. It's not just a talking point when we say we believe our leadership receives revelation.

Also, I argued this in a previous thread, but I really don't think the LDS position is pro-illegal immigration. We're pretty big on following the law of the land most of the time. I linked the official Church statement and argued my case. Several commenters disagreed pretty heavily with my assessment, and I'm fine with that. But I've said my peace on that and don't really feel like doing it again.

Let me answer this two ways:

First, if that event occurs, we'd be in a state of civil war and 80% lowers would be valuable war supplies.

Second, it depends on how the law is written. And if they ban individual mfg, which is what completing an 80% is classified as.

424 No, my point re CA and wall sectors was that "CA" is - obviously - not an entity pushing for the border barrier. To the extent of filing idiotic lawsuits, like the once just dismissed. And threatening to boycott contractors involved.

As I noted - PERHAPS some border LE jurisdictions have privately pushed for barrier extension (obviously they should). But that is not "CA" - such voices are completely ignored by Sacto and the Khmer Rouge Dems running the state.

It was just a TrumpenTweet, so. But there is literally zero leverage over CA, at any level, from delaying border extension or linking it to overall funding - "CA" doesn't care, they f***ing oppose the entire enterprise. Much like Trump's (now, mercifully, ended?) attempts to tweak/embarrass the Dems over DACA delays. Zero political mileage. Obviously.

Trump is better at actual politics than 90% of the political class. But some things are hard to figure.

Pretty implausible, actually. The legislature is all-in on La Raza (which has more than a few members in the legislature) and Jerry Brown is on his way out.

Plus, stuff like that always leaks.

I think the idea is if CA wants illegal aliens, he may just give them to CA, good and hard, until the parking lot of every Home Depot is SRO. Pulling out ICE and not building The Wall would guarantee that.

CA politicians are stupid, venal, and corrupt, but even they must realize the problems that would ensue: fiscal (leap in welfare spending), social (crime rate and gang membership skyrocketing), and educational (even more students who don't speak English, and are ... ahem ... not the quickest studies on earth).

I could see this happening if:

1. The plane is flying low enough for the dog to hear it

Otherwise, yeah, that's dumb.

522 Playing along with stupid and unpopular lynch mob crap - on guns or any other issue - is stupid, strategically, and the opposite of savvy "art of the deal" tactics.

Every single time Trump or anyone else plays along with false premises and stupid ideas, they prolong the nation's agony and peril, and possibly increase both.

It's not about "squishy", it doesn't matter that there will be no law in the end.

Once in a lifetime chance - and the right person, who created that chance - to actually start restoring sense and seriousness to public debates, and marginalize the idiocy that dominates and keeps us all in defensive mode 24/7. Or, alternatively, play along - needlessly, on matters where the crazies have zero political clout or prospects - much like the last several GOP presidents.

BTW, did you know we departed the Paris Accords because they "weren't a good deal for America"? If only they could be tweaked to make them more equitable, than perhaps we could in the end embrace the lysenkoist nonsense on which they're based?

523 Anyone who thinks Randall Davidson will never work in a public school again, may want to re-think that.

We had a raging alcoholic at our son's elementary school in IL. She would literally sit in her car on a side street near the school on her lunch hour and swill vodka, then go back to the classroom, where she'd verbally abuse the little boys in the class.

Moms actually videoed her, parents complained for two years about her, and the school board finally *asked* her to take a medical leave of absence to get clean. And promised her her job back.

Last I heard, she went on leave and decided not to come back.

But the tweaking isn't going to happen, so there was no price to be paid for looking reasonable. The whole idea of the Paris Accords was to get the rest of the world on the American gravy train. Of course the rest of the world supported the accords; there was a large and unruly line waiting for their handouts.

"Not a good deal for America" = "we're not paying unilaterally" And that was the sine qua non of the whole scam.

567 When there are only omnibus CRs, and a WH that just sits there and does not "politicize" the big political issues by making people walk the plan on specific votes (wall funding), and the Senate leadership does the same - well, there you go.

I doubt that Trump lied/lies about his desire to secure the border. But he has done almost nothing to make it happen - that defined as seeking and engaging in momentous political fights, if needed to include remaking "his" party by isolating and ousting GOP incumbents. By allowing the 9-yr absurdity of omnibus CRs replacing regular order in appropriations to continue without any fuss, he's dealt away most of his power before the game begins.

Flake and Corker were both confronted, and probably partly undone, by Trump's firm and direct approach. That's wonderful. But that probably needs to be magnified 10-fold if anything is to really change.

Not saying it's easy. But it is the hill that has to be climbed if real, meaningful things are to be accomplished.

568 "BTW, did you know we departed the Paris Accords because they "weren't a good deal for America"? If only they could be tweaked to make them more equitable, than perhaps we could in the end embrace the lysenkoist nonsense on which they're based?"

First, I hate the Paris accord as much as you, for all the same reasons, but I thought that was a GREAT way to market the move to get out of it. Getting into a science debate starts an argument of dueling bullshit that 90% of the uneducated public just tunes out - we can't win on that, the propaganda has gone too far, the public is too disengaged, and always will be.

BUT - the Paris Accord was so bad that it is manifestly simple to show why it was a Bad Deal for America - the huge payments we were supposed to make that no one else was supposed to make. It is manifestly unfair, and very simple and easy to not just explain that to the uneducated, but to PROVE that to them. The Paris conspirators were so greedy that they made it obvious.

AND Trump, as he knew, has always been VERY safe on saying "well if you just would renegotiate" - the people who wrote up the Paris Accord, more than anyone else, KNOW that the entire Accord was bullshit, and that the ONLY part that actually meant anything was the part where Uncle Sugar agreed to pass out tens of billions of dollars to the world, for nothing in return, and agreed to kneecap our own best industries in the bargain. Pull those things out, and there is NOTHING of any consequence left in that accursed document.

Which is why, within 12 hours of Trump saying "hey I'm open to renegotiation" France, Germany, and the rest of the EU came out and said "No Renegotiation of Terms! Never! No Changes! Better you leave than renegotiate!!"

And so Trump got to publicly paint himself as being eminently reasonable, made a simple, provable point to even the most uneducated voter, backing up his decision, and made the EU show their true colors on the entire matter.

I call that some pretty good gamesmanship myself.
