Hope to see you all again next week! ___________ Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app. ___________ So that about wraps it up for this week. Confession:
I still think in "descriptive notation," and find "algebraic notation" bothersome and difficult-to-remember. In other words, when the pawn in front of the king moves two squares forward, I think "P-K4," and and sure as heck don't think "e4." Same is true for all other moves. In fact, I think and calculate using descriptive notation (a.k.a. "English notation"), and would find it impossible to think in algebraic. I suppose this has to do with how I learn the pieces move, and one's brain gets the original pattern etched into it. I also think that descriptive notation actually helps to understand various strategic and positional patterns more easily, something lacking in algebraic. (E.g. "A lone king vs. a king and a rook pawn is a draw" or "attack bishop-seven next to an uncastled king, because bishop-seven is usually weak and unguarded" and so forth.) Bobby Fisher was the last grandmaster to insist on writing down the moves in descriptive notation, and also "thought" in descriptive. Now it is "illegal" to use descriptive in a tournament game: if you write "P-K4" or "N-B3" on your scoresheet, you will be disqualified and forfeit the game. Seriously! Posted by: zombie at February 10, 2018 05:04 PM (42M22) Really. I did not know that. I taught myself chess in the 1970s with Descriptive Notation. When algebraic came along, I hated it and avoided it wherever possible. But I finally gave up in the 1990s and concentrated on using AN. Now I am used to it and I "think" in AN, whereas before I thought in DN. I have found AN to be an all-around better system now that I know it through and through. In fact, DN sometimes throws me for a loop as I forget that Black has to count from his side of the board, so N-B3 is ambiguous, and depends if you're White or Black. It used to not bother me and I automatically made the adjustment, but now, I forget and make mistakes. When the Supreme Court ruled in Heller that the Second Amendment was an individual right - it was much more profound and important than anyone realizes. Here is why:
18 U.S. Code 242 Whoever, under color of any law, statute, ordinance, regulation, or custom, willfully subjects any person in any State, Territory, Commonwealth, Possession, or District to the deprivation of any rights, privileges, or immunities secured or protected by the Constitution or laws of the United States, ... shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if bodily injury results from the acts committed in violation of this section or if such acts include the use, attempted use, or threatened use of a dangerous weapon, explosives, or fire, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and if death results from the acts committed in violation of this section or if such acts include kidnaping or an attempt to kidnap, aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to commit aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to kill, shall be fined under this title, or imprisoned for any term of years or for life, or both, or may be sentenced to death. While Heller said that the ruling itself did not outlaw gun control - the applicability of 18 USC 242 does - in fact - outlaw the enforcement of any and all gun control laws, statutes, ordinances, regulations, and customs. Really.
Posted by: OregonMuse In the o-o-o-o-riginal chess books, back in the 1400s, written by Arab and Italian early masters, they hadn't even invented any kind of notation yet, so the moves were written thusly: "Pick up the knight from its position on the third rank above the queen's starting square, and move unto the square at the fifth rank above the starting point of the queen's bishop." Eventually, in the 18th century I believe, they figurted out a shorthand way to render that as "N from Q3 to QB5." And then they realized that they didn't even need to "from" and "to," and shortened in the 19th century to "NQ3-QB5." But THEN they realize that in most cases, you didn't even need to specify the starting square, so that 95% of the time you could simply write "N-QB5." Only a coule times per game that both knights or both rooks could move to the same square, in which instance you shouldl then write it to old way of "N(Q3)-NB5," if it was true that your other knight could also move to Q5. THen in the 20th century with the rise of organized international tournaments, they had to find a way to regularize scorekeeping, because each country had its own eccentric notation style (and even its own alphabet). So, starting in the 1930s ( I think) and especially after WWII, they really encouraged top-level players in international tournaments to write in a standardized notation (now known as "algebraic"), so the tournament directors and game publishers could all understand what was written, and now have to learn Bulgarian notation, or whatever. However, in local tournaments, players in each country still used their own native notation style, which is when the kind used here and in the UK became known as "English descriptive." This was still commonplace up through the 1970s, not just in the US, but in all countries. However, I think starting in the 1980s, FIDE (the international chess org) passed a new rule that all game scores MUST be in standardized notation; it was no longer "encouraged," but became mandatory. And then also around the same time almost all chess books graduated to ONLY using algebraic (so they could sell copies internationally), and little by little the next generation of chessplayers grew up with algebraic and used it naturally. I think in the 1990s the USCF conformed to the FIDE rule and made algebraic mandatory. What really made algebraic notation universal was the "Informant" chess series: a semi-annual book published in Yugoslavia every six months throughout the '60s and '70s that presented (in the pre-computer era) ALL the top grandmaster games around the world, with detailed analysis of each game by the players themselves. Because it was intended for an international audiece, they used algebraic notation for the square names and piece-symbols (instead of letters) for the pieces, in a special "chess font" they invented. Anyone and everyone who wanted to be cool and get better at chess in those days bought the Informants, and everyone therefore got used to the style they used. Fast forward to today, and the Informant style is now universal in international tournaments and books. When Fischer (now insane) had his over-hyped rematch against Spassky in the 1990s, he wrote all his game scores in old-fashioned Descriptive Notation, to everyone's amusement and consternation. No one has the nerve to confront him and tell him is was now "forbidden." He would have bitten their heads off. Posted by: zombie at February 10, 2018 05:41 PM (42M22) 124

AOP, the soiled bedding is scattered in the pasture to decompose. This is why I developed the shredding machine you and Jim and I talked about awhile back. The shavings take nitrogen out of the soil and take longer to decompose. I have gone back to straw because of the faster decomposition and better for keeping down erosion.

Are you in the Westerville area? I saw the Chief give the details, he was crushed. Two veteran cops, 17 and 20 years on the job, responded to a domestic disturbance call and were shot when they entered an apartment. One died at the scene and the other in surgery. Ben Had - well it's 54 acres with about 500 trees per acre. Do the math. It is a LOT of trees.
They are loblolly pine, and yes they do have timber and/or pulp value. I'm having about two acres cleared for a rifle range and a place to park an RV. I'm actually having these trees mulched to form a stable bed and control erosion. Posted by: Weasel at February 10, 2018 05:59 PM (Sfs6o) 178

I don't know that he is, but that's what he said even though we tried to dissuade him from not continuing. I think it's because he's really much better at Cross Country than he is at Track and they will have that at the Community College. Thanks for your good wishes. It such a difficult time for him right now. The blessing is that he is going to see a counselor at school and seems to value that. My theory about Rotten Tomatoes is that "racism" thing is all a smokescreen. They are embarrassed by their audience score, and this came to a head with the abysmal ratings the general audiences gave The Last Jedi. They are just using Black Panther as an excuse to manipulate the audience ratings so they are more favorable to the big studios like Disney. Rotten Tomatoes is now hopelessly compromised.

Posted by: Ben Had at February 10, 2018 05:56 PM (20LNi) I get you, Ben. You know, in major horse country, it might pay to set up a combined cycle. Lease fresh wood shavings to the horse owners, then collect the dirty shavings, dry them a bit in the sun, and then use them as partial feed for a wood-waste burning power plant. The horse shit would burn, too, solving that problem, and the end product would be a nice source of potash for fertilizer. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 10, 2018 06:03 PM (Dbv1R) 189

The other part is just getting up and getting out there. Without intentions. Just get outside, say 'hi' to everyone you pass. Then, eventually, force yourself to smile at girls again. An Observation, don't follow your reasoning on Heller and 18USC 242. Agree Heller is/should be/could be profound - but at the moment there's the weeeee leeeetle problem of inferior courts "over-ruling" Heller (check out the 4th's trash talk in their ruling on the MD law).
I recall when Heller was issued, many counseling patience - the decision would work its way downward and would eventually affect real life for everyone. I understand that - based on *previous* history. At the moment it's gone the other way, the worst states spiking the ball and laughing at the concept underlying Heller. Imagine some imaginary right, or something cultural that's been absurdly constitutionalized like marriage definition - as opposed to a central right that was key to the whole system even being established - taking years and years and years to be recognized/enforced down the line. Council on Foreign Relations is primarily a networking and welfare/rest stop/perch operation for the foreign policy establishment - not a body with any clout in its own right. Young foreign policy types angle and scheme and beg to be made assoc. members (at least that's the way it was years ago) to put on the resume, and network.
The big names are always CFR members (no matter how ridiculous it is that they're big names). As with many things, it didn't used to be mostly stupid, but that trend I'm sure has taken over. Back in the day there were plenty of realists and non-academics. Have not bothered to check for a while. But the CFR label means little in itself. He'll accept whatever relationship he has with the kids when they are grown. He'll always love them and hope they do well in life but he will always be separate from them. Don't ask me how I know. Posted by: weirdflunky at February 10, 2018 05:44 PM (DKwRk) ------------------------- My ex and I have been divorced almost 30 years. And, from what I gather, the ex still talks crap about me to the kids. 30 years later the lying cheater still keeps talking. Whereas, I don't say a thing to the kids about their mother. However, when asked a direct question, I always answered honestly. I do not go out of my way to volunteer information, though. Let's just say the ex hasn't done anything to improve her relationship with our children. Also, I will not allow the kids to say anything against their mother, much as I'd like to feed my ego. I never go beyond asking how their mother is and leave it at that. Anyway, inwardly, I laugh, because the woman has been remarried for 20+ years yet, still thinks I'm a subject worthy of her attention. Rent free for more than 20 years. In many ways, this is the story of President Trump. Anyway, kids will eventually figure out what mom did. What they chose to do with the knowledge is up to them. If you are looking for a place where like minded people of all parties meet and share their agenda, it means a ton. CFR and Freedom House are indeed very influential with ties across the Atlantic. Hillary Clinton, John McCain, McCain's aide who got the dossier David Kramer, Strobe Talbot, Victoria Nuland, even Glenn Simpson has ties to this group as he at one time worked for one of the sub foundations they funded. Oh and don't forget George Soros who pours tons of money into this place not to mention McCain's private institution/money laundering scam. The list goes on and on and on of players in this corruption and links to these organizations. David Boies isn't a member but his wife who used to work in the Clinton White House is. Given what is unfolding right now it is important to look for ties. In Christopher Steele's London testimony he claims Glenn Simpson told him to seek out McCain and brief him on the dossier. Steele asked if he could trust McCain and Simpson said something like "Yes, he is one of us". CFR is routinely listed as one of the most influential think tanks in the country, mostly because it's membership is made up of current and former movers and shakers in both government and industry. Their influence should not be overlooked or minimized. Posted by: JackStraw at February 10, 2018 06:37 PM (/tuJf) 284

I know little about it, but by getting people on their salary, they can have some leverage. Ted Cruz's wife was working for them, did some work on NAFTA policy iirc. Club members like to have loyalty to the club. And generally there is some inner sanctum that leads the direction of the whole. That would be the ones connected tot he money that funds it all, decides the direction they'd like the "research papers' to take. (like Yes to NAFTA, open borders stuff.) I suspect many laws are written directly by these guys, the 2 thousand pages behind the nice sounding titles. Saves a lot of work for the elected people. I'm not sure I understand what you mean. There is a 2nd dossier, getting really sick of that word, that was put together by Cody Shearer and Sid Blumenthal and given to the State Department. It is getting confusing and it's not 100% clear yet how these two documents are related if at all. the moment it's gone the other way, the worst states spiking the ball and laughing at the concept underlying Heller. Imagine some imaginary right, or something cultural that's been absurdly constitutionalized like marriage definition - as opposed to a central right that was key to the whole system even being established - taking years and years and years to be recognized/enforced down the line. Yes, it is unimaginable. Yes, at the moment. However, it takes only one honest DOJ attorney in the US - before one honest judge to change that. One New Jersey or Chicago or New York law enforcement person convicted and sentenced under 18 USC 242 would bring a screeching halt to the whole gun control farce. What didn't you understand? 18 USC 242 says no law enforcement person may violate anyone's individual constitutional rights. That means local, state, and federal. The shared mindset is what matters. And it didn't used to be uniform - nor was most of it even anathema to sane people. Recall that not that long ago, the "foreign policy establishment" was associated with things like NATO (at the height of the Cold War), and opposed by Women Strike for Peace and the Greens in Germany, on things like INF. Given that most of the think tanks in the Beltway, most of the time, aren't very influential, I would not describe something like CFR as influential. You'll find 90% of the people working in the field above a certain level have some CFR connection of some kind, if only tangential, but it won't predict or explain much that wouldn't be clear already from other things like resumes, policy positions, etc. Posted by: Very Unstable Semi-Genius, AKA rhomboid at February 10, 2018 07:16 PM (vP09u) 401
Benning is Northwest. I'm northeast.

So CNN is fawning over the sister of North Korea's dictator? She has
such a warm smile and firm handshake. No matter that she is in charge of propaganda-that her brother killed their uncle by feeding him to dogs and killed her half brother and is starving their people?? People need to march on every outfit of CNN. It's like Duranty and Stalin all over again. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at February 10, 2018 07:14 PM (8+Ozj) --This is what the left really believes. Its why they supported the Iran deal. They want to say nice things to all of America's enemies, and treat them with kindness, especially if doing so may harm their real enemy-- us. Eric Bolling on CNN's fawning coverage:
If... - Starving your people - Oppressing your people - Killing anyone who opposes your dictator brother ...were a "trialthalon" event at the 2018 Olympics... Kim Jong Un's sister would be favored for the gold medal. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at February 10, 2018 07:37 PM (8+Ozj) 404
This media fawning over one of modern history's most vile regimes has lowered my estimation of a large part of America even further. One might explain that it's the weekend, it's a sports story, people don't pay much attention - and all of those things could help explain it.
But that such behavior doesn't seem to elicit a sharp rejection - apart from the usual suspects - further lowers my confidence in the country as a whole. Posted by: Very Unstable Semi-Genius, AKA rhomboid at February 10, 2018 09:44 PM (vP09u) 405
