Poll: Most Americans Want Less Immigration, Not More; The Number of Americans Who Want More Americans Is Barely Higher Than Those Who Want No Immigration Whatsoever
It seems the political establishment embarked on a campaign of transforming the nation through high levels of immigration (both legal and illegal), confident of the righteousness and popularity of their cause, without ever -- get this! -- bothering to ask the citizenry they allegedly represent about their feelings on the issue.
Eighty-one percent of Americans want one million or fewer legal immigrants to the United States per year, according to new polling data released Monday by the Harvard-Harris poll, a number lower than the 1.38 million who came to the United States in 2015. The plurality of respondents, 35 percent, think that there should be between 1 and 250,000 legal immigrants arriving to the United States per year. A net 12 percent want to see immigration increased to 1.5 million people per year or more, while nine percent of Americans think that there should be no new legal immigrants. Plurality preference for between 1 and 250,000 new immigrants a year persists across white, Hispanic, and black Americans, as well as moderates and self-identified Democrats. Such a rate of immigration would be lower even than the rate expected from the RAISE Act, a bill backed by the administration and expected to cut immigration in half in ten years.There's a plurality of preference for between 1 (one!) and 250,000 legal immigrants per year, while the current rate is 1.38 million per year, and virtually all the Establishment plans (including, especially, nominal "Republican" Establishment plans) call for combating illegal immigration by simply jacking up legal immigration so much that there's less of a need at all to immigrate illegally. They will continue ignoring the preferences of the public, and they will continue being baffled and butthurt that the public is in open revolt against them. Oh, and maybe they'll explain away the public revolt by blaming it on RUSSIAN BOTS.

This is why you read the story. The family came over legally, he's a green card holder and it's a bit sketchy as to why, exactly, he's being held but it appears that he has criminal convictions in his past. The story focuses on some incidents from 1992 but he had a DUI in 2008 and he's had 20 traffic infractions between 1997 and 2017. The statement from ICE refers to 18 encounters with local law enforcement.
Guess what? It has been ever so that until you are a naturalized citizen, your legal resident status can be revoked for criminal convictions.
There's nothing about that story that's actually, you know, a story other than CNN wanting to put doctor in in headline to make you associate Dreamers with that guy.

AND--From 1921 to 1965, we realized we had overdone the immigration thing, so we closed the floodgates. Then Ted Kennedy (is there nothing awful he did not do?) worked to open them again. Just at a time when African Americans were finally integrating. And guess what happened to their upward mobility?
In 2018??? Time to close them again!
And I say this as a guy who married Asian immigrant brides. That may have been because femicommunism made the White women into dykes from hell, but more on that in another post.

The culture of cheating on tests is widespread throughout most of the world, and by all accounts, college in India (and China for that matter) is much much easier than in the US and consists almost entirely of memorizing a book and vomiting it back on a test (again, and cheating is rampant).
So, uh, how does that help us as a country to send every kid to college to wrack up incredible debt, then say "sorry, no job for you, Raj is willing to work for cheaper" once they graduate?

Yeah, that part is delightful. I just loved reading code written by someone with NO English at all.
In one of the more doomed projects in which I participated, our Sainted Wise Management outsourced a large chunk of code rewrite to Romania because they could do it just as well and far cheaper. Code was delivered. It was completely incomprehensible. We had turn-over training given by two guys from Eastern Europe. One spoke only Romanian, and the to other was his interpreter who was Czech. We would ask a question and the Czech guy would ask the Romanian the question. The Romanian would speak for about 5 minutes and then the Czech would turn to us and say Yes or No or a shrug. The code was never implemented--so just how damn cheap was it?

This is how it is done. The US had a reasonable assumption that, being adopted by fine, upstanding American citizens, the kid would properly assimilate and become a fine, upstanding American citizen. And so far that is absolutely true.
We have no reason to believe that will happen with any legal immigrants who come here as adults, and none whatsoever for illegals. So why let any of them in or stay?

I worked as a carpenter when I was younger. It was hard work, but good money with unlimited potential for advancement. Way better than most white collar jobs, quality of living wise, with the same or better pay than most office jobs.
Look at the construction industry over all right now.
The proverbial "start in the mailroom" jobs are largely taken by illegal immigrants. They get paid well, but they work under the table, off the books, and jump around from jobsite to job site. They have crowded out the first rung of the ladder (being a labor) and the second rung (assistant to a skilled laborer) just by sheer numbers.
SO you end up with virtually every job site looking like this: a handful of old guys in their '60s supervising dozens / hundreds of illegal immigrants who don't speak the same language as them, have no intention of working their way up the ladder at the company or showing any initiative, and who may or may not give any shits whatsoever about the quality of their work.

Yes, but they get around that by advertising these jobs in little read publications and making them sound as shitty and unattractive as possible AND tailored to the resume of the candidate they want to hire. So if they want someone to make iphone apps, it'll look something like this:
"Wanted: Coder proficient in C++, Java, JavaScript, QBasic, and designing iPhone Apps in Swift. Must have 5 years experience in coding, with references available. Pay: $27,000 to $41,000 depending on experience. Must be willing to relocate."
In the meantime, they have a guy in mind who fits that profile and is willing to work for $41,000.
But for some recent college grad who took on $80,000 in student loan debt in a really challenging major in college because "DO STEM!!! SO MUCH MONEY IN IT!" he sees "uh, I don't code in any of those obsolete languages, don't have 5 years of experience, and can't afford to work for $27,000 a year..."

So true. It's one of the reasons I'm an Anglophile. the English have been on balance a truly civilizing force throughout much of the world. And on balance they were benevolent. And when it was time to let go, e.g., India, they did. Without violence. In this, the Indians were fortunate they weren't colonized by China. Or Russia. All too often they are "bait and switch", like "water supply" projects which involve buying more "Watershed Area" for wildlife and not a single dam built.
And also they are budgetary straitjackets, like the one that demands a certain percentage for the schools from the General Fund, no matter what else happens that year and never mind special taxes like the California Lottery go entirely to schools (or once did? It was sold to us that way in the 1980's anyway).

I moved out of California in 1997, and even then it was a third world hell hole. Unfortunately, here in Virginia you are seeing 1984 levels of immigration. It's why Nevada and New Mexico are blue, and partially why Colorado is (stupid liberal Californians who lurved them some illegals started moving to Colorado and Nevada and brought their horrible left wing voting patterns with them, like locusts.)
When immigrants arrive in huge groups, it's almost impossible to assimilate them. And the GOPe is too dumb to realize that "cheap labor" is making them in minority party - or maybe they know and don't care. But I am very pessimistic, we should have done something in the Bush II administration, I think we've run out of time.
