Another Poll Shows Democrats' Lead in Congressional Generic Ballot Falling By Half

Noted RUSSIAN BOT expert Allahpundit notes, with some degree of chagrin, the bad news for his party.

Of the last five generic ballot polls taken, four show the Dems' lead cut in half from the heights of mid-December, when they were leading consistently by margins of 10 points are better. If you missed this post on Friday night about NBC's latest survey, that'll catch you up on the other numbers. The most dramatic example of the trend towards Republicans comes in today’s new one from CNN, which has Republicans trailing by just five points among registered voters. A month ago, CNN had Republicans down... 18. No typo.

He notes some optimistic news, however: There remains one lone poll showing a big Democrat advantage -- the ABC/Washington Post poll still shows a double-digit lead -- and Democrats still lead in enthusiasm and therefore propensity to vote. The usual rule that Republicans are more likely to vote in midterms than Democrats may be reversed, and thus the polls may understate Democrats' true lead whereas they usually overstate it.

However, i'd note that a rising tide lifts all poll number boats, and just as increasing enthusiasm for the economy has boosted Republicans on the congressional generic ballot, as well as slightly boosted Trump's approval rating, so too, over time, will the gangbusters economy begin increasing Republican enthusiasm.

85 An improving economy certainly helps the GOP, but I think the two biggest factors are:

(1) Legislative Victories -- If the Congressional GOP is just acting like the conservative wing of the Uniparty, the base isn't going to be interested in returning them to power. There will be plenty of throw-the-bums-out sentiment. Who wants to drive across town in the rain to vote for milquetoast sellouts? But if the GOP actually gets stuff done, like the tax bill, there's less reason to be disgusted with those clowns. And the victories that Trump and the GOP have been getting are actually pretty good for conservatives. Every day it's getting harder for #NeverTrump to maintain the "Never" without looking like lunatics. Basically, if you're still #NeverTrump at this point, you've revealed yourself to be a leftist, out of your mind, or both.

(2) The Normalization of Trump -- I still think we're all still getting used to the idea that Donald Freakin' Trump is the President of the United States. Many days I wake up and can't actually believe it. The country spent 2017 squinting, scratching their heads, and saying "this guy's our president?" But as times goes on, we're getting used to the idea of President Trump, and the fact that we have a president who spends a good part of the day calling people "losers" on Twitter seems... less odd. Every day that goes by is a day when Trump has not been as bad as everyone's worst predictions. You still might not like him, you still might oppose him, but he's not a catastrophe. No one's getting nuked.

The fact is that midterms are tough for the President's party, but if Trump stays on track, 2018 looks to be one of the milder corrections in recent years.

My take: The Democrats think they have a winner with the DACA/Dreamers issue. They think they can win big if there's an isolated vote on granting amnesty to all the cute innocent toddlers who didn't do anything wrong and who totally love America you guys. They think that if that's the only issue up for a vote, even staunch conservative voters will melt the phones to tell their Senators to vote for amnesty.

So the Democrats are cool with isolating that. They'll keep the government open, and a couple weeks they'll get a vote on DACA amnesty -- a vote that they think they'll win.

I think they're miscalculating bigly here, for both substantive and structural reasons, but they think they've got a winner.

IMHO, you are saying that as an older man. When I was a young man, no offense ladies, 80% of the ladies were undatable.

That's the point of being an older man. You get perspective. When I was a young man I "got" plenty of young women who didn't seem quite good enough. (I got some that were good enough, too, but that's not the point).

This subthread made me look up one of my favorite Fitzgerald stories.

" I don't think he was ever happy unless some one was in love with him, responding to him like filings to a magnet, helping him to explain himself, promising him something. What it was I do not know. Perhaps they promised that there would always be women in the world who would spend their brightest, freshest, rarest hours to nurse and protect that superiority he cherished in his heart."

Unless they are as unfortunate as someone postulated above, they all have brightest, freshest, rarest hours, and if they share them with you it's a blessing.

"Why don't evangelicals hate (person) because of (whatever)" has been a feature of progressives for years. It was pretty much the entire point of the Roy Moore campaign.

I saw a variant on Twitter recently where a feminist shrieked "Hey men, sexbots won't make you dinner or bear your children", and about 50,000 people all replied "Neither will feminists".

Many years ago I worked with a young woman who was just, there's no nice way to say this, ugly. She had truly been dealt a very unfortunate hand by genetics. Bless her heart, she tried to make the most of what she had but she had nothing with which to work.

She was also one of the nicest, sweetest, most genuinely kind people you will ever meet in your life.

She married a guy who was also not, shall we say, overly blessed with an abundance of good looks. Shall we say. Some of the snotty pretty women at work made all kinds of nasty like appeals to like comments.

Here's the thing. What he was blessed with was a nigh to savant understanding of various and sundry forms of math, the practical applications thereof and how to manipulate odds. He used a small inheritance from a relative to begin day trading.

Yeah. Yeah, that ugly girl that all the hot girls in high school laughed at and the pretty girls at work mocked for marrying someone as ugly as her? Very happily married to a man who worships the ground she walks on and made a fortune so he could treat her as she should be treated and so that she could always have anything she wanted. That's not speculation, that's what he told me himself.

Sometimes, very, very rarely, but sometimes, the good person wins.

To most parents, a benefit to their children is as great or even greater than a benefit to themselves. Why should these trespassers get the same benefits to children that LEGAL immigrants get?
Talk about "unfair."

330 The Left is complaining that Trump is supposed to be the king of "Are of the Deal" and why isn't he making deals. Schumer complaining that negotiating with Trump is like negotiating with jello.

Lefty translation: "Why isn't he capitulating!"

This is the Art of the Deal in action. It a process, usually a long one, where Trump just wears the other side down. He kicks, swears, screams, and cajoles until he gets what he wants.

AT&T has an international option, if you use them. It's like $10 a day or something, so it's not exactly cheap, but could be worth it if you don't want the hastle. It worked pretty well with my wife and I when we were in Italy in the fall, and we didn't really need more than one phone that could make calls at a time. Losing a few seats would not be terribly surprising - even with a booming economy - but not the bloodbath being predicted. Of course, some areas may be getting more blue while others are getting more red - or Trump red.

409 Grand jury operation not affected by info being in the news. Nor trial jury. Concern has been about investigation tactics being compromised by disclosures - I don't see that as plausible or important for most of this, but whatever.

Wouldn't be so sure the Mega-Scandal will not see prosecutions.

U-1, Espionage Act/obstruction of justice, and the outlandish behavior of DOJ/FBI, odds are good of prosecutions.

Here's my story about strip clubs-I have never been to one myself- because not a male or a lesbian. and no interest About 25 years ago my husbands's company relocated to a place that was 2.5. hour commute each way. I told him it was too long to go back and forth that distance every day, so he rented a room with a guy that was about 15 years younger than he was and husband came home on weekends. The guy invited him to go to a strip joint. They got there and there was some women with 42 double D breasts or something and men would pay her to balance her breasts on top of their heads, so that her breast would come down around their ears that a muff. You paid for the picture. The younger guy did it. My husband didn't. He said "It was just silly and sophomoric and kind of depressing. So he may have been to strip joints before we were married ,but thankfully he never asked me to go to strip joint while we were dating.

So you know what people think about how they look now? Wow, they are always so happy! Because they are and it's not the money, it's because they are genuinely nice, happy people. Are they a handsome couple? Nope, but they are a happy couple so people gravitate to them.

Came home to SC one fall and opened the door to the house and smelled rotting flesh. Started checking things out and the big tell were the maggots falling out of the rangehood. When installed one of the vents had the flap removed to make the hood fit better. Also no screen over the outside vent. Squirrel nested in the pipe coming out of the hood. Nest slid down to the opening in the hood with the squirrel in the nest. The only way the squirrel could attempt to exit was over the range. It tried to chew it's way out and died trying. Still have nightmares about those maggots.

Meh. It's the same thing the Dims have been doing to the Republicans for decades.

There's two schools of thought:
1). You've demeaned her by admiring her smoking hot body and leaving a small pile of dollar bills.
2). You've demeaned yourself by by admiring her smoking hot body and leaving a small pile of dollar bills.

I'm of the:

3). She's probably a decent but not-too-bright person, making a lot of men spend a lot of money which she will put toward college and helping her ailing mother stay in her home which is in foreclosure, so of course I'm a helluva guy and it should totally be a charitable deduction on my income taxes.

-----------

An anecdotal example, from article about Ann Wilson:

"She not only walked away from her sister and the old band, she and her husband moved about as far away from Seattle as they could get without leaving the country. After falling in love with Key West, Florida, on their honeymoon, they bought a house and some property farther north, near Jacksonville.

“We were looking for someplace where a dollar is still close to a dollar, where we could buy a nice house that we’d be able to afford, get some land with it and live by water,” she said.

Clashing viewpoints

But she and her husband soon found out that politically, ultra-liberal Seattle is worlds away from their new rural neighborhood in Florida, an alt-right, onetime bastion of the KKK.

“It’s a huge change, especially where we live, right smack dab in the middle of Trump country,” she said. “We’re definitely living blue in a red state. Living in Florida has been a real eye opener. "

I note that the article is from The Mercury News (San Francisco), so the 'alt-right' and 'KKK' references are not surprising, but indicative of the Left/Lib/Prog nut-job echo chamber.

The Prophets were aware of oligarchic city-states up north in Canaan. That's about as close as the Ancient Near East got to the republican system (which, to be fair, was about as close as Rome ever got, too).

The Bible considers these to be pagan in religion and oppressive to the poor in practice.

I've known a couple of girls who sank low enough to work the pole as strippers. It's pretty sad when you see it from that side.

As opposed to the morally uplifting role of stocking shelves at the super market for minimum wage? Dancing around for hours -- something that I know many women would enjoy doing for free -- and collecting a purse full of dollar bills in exchange. While the stock boys would make lewd comments about her body without rendering one tip?

Some people see victims everywhere. I see some women of limited intelligence leading with their best asset (no pun intended), saving money, and getting out.

You should have bought the girlfriend a lap dance. Could have led somewhere really fun.

I go to the strip clubs when I'm in Portland, and usually between 20%-25% of the clientele are women. Last time I was there, I was sitting at the stage when some gal walked up, plopped a ten-dollar bill in front of me, and walked off. I went over to thank her later and it was this gorgeous statuesque blonde gal in a business suit. She was there with her boyfriend.

There was one nearby, somewhere behind Trinity Place.

Old fashioned strip club. Drink a beer, look at the tits, don't look at the tits, whatever. It wasn't a production, it wasn't a shakedown. You could just drink a beer and look at the tits.

I went to school down there. We took the girl we liked (literally we, a bunch of us liked her) and she was a good sport.

"Sex workers", which is the PC term for strippers and similar most often end up hating men. Especially strippers and those who perform in public like that.

Why? They see men at their worst, hooping and hollering and acting like lunatics, pawing and grabbing at 'em and treating them like commodities.

They end up despising men. And a lot of them go lesbo because of it.

I was reading something about this by some psychologist describing what "working the pole" does to a girl.

689 Helps explain the Dem retreat from the shutdown, though their base is hyper-energized, an advantage according to the article. The trend gives an insight into what the 2016 election was about: immigration.
The failed shutdown gambit is evidence that the public wants a hard-line on immigration. But in the first year of Trump, the opprobrium was so media-saturated, the Gop so incompetent, the early days of the Trump admin and the Mueller probe so chaotic, all of that suppressed the 2016 issue.
Finally, the GOP passed tax cuts, allowing the immigration hard-line to re-emerge. The Dems foolishly thinking that their 2016 immigration policy is a winner, royal goofed the pooch connecting that shutdown deal to an unpopular immigration policy all while their numbers were slipping.
Unless they change their position, they got nowhere to go as Trump owns the economic good news. All they can so is shelve the dreamers for now and hope the economy takes a dump.

690 @293 Benji Carver, personal responsibility is a great cause to promote, but that wasn't the point of Kevin Williamson's article, certainly not in the context of the primaries.

Williamson's obvious thesis was that rural white Trump supporters are entirely to blame for their own troubles and that, therefore, their complaints about the DC establishment can be safely ignored and even ridiculed. Since he's made the exact opposite point with urban minorities -- that their problems are caused or at least exacerbated by local Democrat administrations -- I think it's safe to dismiss Williamson as an unprincipled, opportunistic, and irrational hack.
