Hawaii gets an asterisk. It's kind of cool to fly into the 'big' island and see snow on the top of the mountain, even in summer. The other states? That's pretty amazing.

Entirely consistent with Milankovitch cycles making our Northern Hemisphere winters more intense year after year. Also consistent with Australia getting hotter summers, year after year.

I actually had an investment in a small outfit in the 90's that was doing some secondary/tertiary recovery at Spindletop. Since sold, but I think there's still at least one producing well on that site. Astounding since that spot has been producing at some level for 116 years now.

Posted by: goon at January 18, 2018 09:54 AM (EaQ6/)

140 This is an adorable image that should appeal to anyone familiar with little girls at that 'all knees and elbows' stage. The soft background of carpet, furniture and plants lets the girl and her fancy white clothes really stand out, which keeps the viewer's focus where it belongs. Notice she isn't smiling but is serious about looking proper for a ballroom dance. And is that a blossom on the plant just above her? Perhaps the first hint that she is growing up or at least becoming aware of growing up?

It made me think of a similar image for little boys. After ball games the Nats let little kids run the bases. The 4 and 5 year olds are so serious and earnest. You know in their minds they have just hit a walk off home run in the last game of the World Series. No adult can look at them, or this little girl, without a gentle smile.

I don't know if the 'ettes will agree with my impression of the painting.

Of course you won't become a bitter, alcoholic recluse. You will band together with your children and grandchildren and your family will go on, being watched from above by your beloved Faye.

Right now, you are in shock. It's completely understandable. Your life has been turned upside down. You will need time to get through all of this, but you will. You have God, and your family, and your friends there with you. And us in the grey boxes, of course.

Gene Kelly worked very hard to get more men and boys interested in dance. Even back in his time the art form was starting to be considered a feminine activity, and it was being taken over by women by default. Fewer and fewer boys were taking up dance. He fought really hard against this characterization, and tried to demonstrate to males that dance could be a very demanding and masculine physical activity.

They seem to be desperate to impress their new Big City friends by outdoing all of them in their hatred and contempt for the place they came from.

I suspect it's a deep insecurity, a feeling they're really not worth associating with their "betters", that they fear that deep down they're still just the poor redneck kid on the outside looking in. And for an intensely proud man, that feeling is intolerable, so they lash out at their backgrounds - and at themselves.

417 He made Krugman #1 even thought it's opinion so everyone will make a big deal about how stupid it is to call the claim "the economy under Trump will suck" news, thereby repeating the predictions he'd blow up the economy. Then they can switch to the next story: Apple repatriating a quarter trillion dollars, some company moving back to the US, workers getting bonuses, Dow 26K, etc.

but he was just being an anti Trump douche. If Trump cured cancer

I haven't seen the Williamson column, but I can see someone being a recent convert to pro-life for several reasons, such as:
--- It has morphed from last resort/"safe, legal, rare" --> free abortion on demand
--- Abortion activists have pushed hard to remove stigma, and state legislation prohibiting, late-term abortion, which really is infanticide when it happens weeks before delivery date
--- 3D imaging of fetus in womb and other medical changes that have led to better understanding of what the fetus can do, etc. in the womb
--- Dr. Kermin Gosnell and Planned Parenthood shown to be ghouls who are happy to sell, baby parts, dissect live-but-dying babies, etc.

A lot has changed in 40 years that would make someone who was pro-abortion by default/while uniformed become pro-life in today's practice and political climate

448 Trump making Krugman #1 was absolutely perfect, and sheer genius on his part.

The reasons why:

1) Krugman and his acolytes love to crow about how he is a "nobel prize winning economist". Trump is showing everyone that he was smarter than the Dem's nobel prize winner.

2) Krugman is close to the top of the Democrat Pantheon of writers, and his columns in the NYT are venerated like Holy Scripture. Trump just pushed one of their most cherished tin gods off its little shelf.

3) Trump's #1 claim calls up the whole issue of the Economy - which democrats are desperate to avoid. So he gets to attack one of their most revered figures and they are stunned into silence and have to let it stand.

4) The claim that it was "only opinion" is ridiculous, and everyone knows it. The entire dem party treats Krugman's columns as Ex Cathedra pronouncements, and everyone knows it. Every dem in the country believed Krugman when he wrote this.

5) with the#1 spot on the list being deeply offensive to the dems, but also so inarguably right that they dare not talk about it, the entire list becomes something that the Dem's dare not talk about it, and an insult that they are forced to suffer in silence even though every one of them wants to scream at the sky about it.

Like I said, absolute Genius on Trump's part.

It was hotter than hell and they made her wear long sleeves to cover her tattoos even though the previous super didn't have a problem and there is nothing in their manual about having to cover them up. He told another employee to stand on one foot, which the guy did even though he was like wtf? Asked why, the super said, "because I can". A real piece of work.

It was pretty amazing watching the non-stop forklifts, which looked chaotic, but obviously everyone knew exactly what they were doing. I'd say about a third of the forklift drivers were women, and all the employees seemed very professional.
