If These Countries Aren't Shitholes, Why Do Other Countries Have to Offer Aid and Refugee Status to Help People Escape Them?
Apparently economic migrants come from countries with great economies, and people seeking political asylum hail from well-functioning democracies.
It's not the words they object to. They're going into faux-outrage about word choice to win on a substantive point -- which they don't actually want to talk about, because they'll lose on that. See James Comey, for example:

"Diversity" is not mentioned. Letting in criminals, or even people with no desire to understand our nations ideals is "diverse". Letting in Muslims, who if they are consistent reject our constitution on principle, is also "diverse".
There is nothing in the poem that demands that Lady Liberty be so committed to diversity that she opens up the golden door and lifts her light to some bandito who will bash her over the head, enter, and proceed to despoil and shoot up the place once he gets inside.
It leaves aside the whole question of merit, of worthiness which I think is inherent in the poem. But the left reads in the exact opposite intent. That it demands we let in people who are too debased to understand the sentiment of the poem. People who would use the generous sentiment in the poem as a weapon to psychologically bludgeon us with in order to despoil us and destroy our system of government.

Christians get in trouble a lot doing this: treating different literary forms as the same. You say and write things in poetry in a manner that often is exaggerated, overstated, or broadly written to mean a more specific exact thing, for effect or style.
You cannot make policy based on a poem, nor yet law. You take principles and ideas from it, you learn from it, but you don't make it mandatory. Nobody really wants to be referred to as "wretched refuse" but the poem uses that term as an overstated exaggeration to mean the woeful people rejected by their previous national origin. Not literally trash that we ought to take in despite being worthless and even corrosive to the culture.
As RedBanzai noted above, even as people were shuffling past that poem on the wall, the immigration department was refusing people who were clearly of no benefit to the nation and would actually be dangerous or destructive to it.

It is not only NOT in the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence or even the Federalist Papers, (as pointed out above) it is also not even ON or part of the Statue of Liberty. It is not on the Statue, was not made by anyone associated with sculpting or building the statue. It was a poem written by some early "progressive" who was influenced by the statue and is in a plaque in the museum inside the statue. How it became the basis for anything related to policy is truly beyond me. I've noticed that too. Now I don't listen to him nearly as much as I used to, but at one time I'd listen because he's have info and insight I hadn't heard yet. Just a few days ago I was listening and telling myself what he was going to say next. He did.
So, he's likely to be using the same sources as I for his "hot" takes, and isn't on the cutting edge anymore, as he used to be.
Or, I'm no longer the uninformed middle-american he wants to reach.
