If These Countries Aren't Shitholes, Why Do Other Countries Have to Offer Aid and Refugee Status to Help People Escape Them?

Apparently economic migrants come from countries with great economies, and people seeking political asylum hail from well-functioning democracies.

Let’s be clear about one thing here: Haiti is a shithole. I’ve been there twice. It has a cholera epidemic thanks to the United Nations and a burgeoning child sex trafficking problem thanks to the predilections of evil people. It is really a hellish place. But the whole point of the temporary status welcoming immigrants from these countries is based on them being real shitholes – places so dangerous and awful that we won’t send refugees from them back to the countries because they’ll probably die, or worse. That’s the whole point of granting this policy in the first place.

It's not the words they object to. They're going into faux-outrage about word choice to win on a substantive point -- which they don't actually want to talk about, because they'll lose on that.

See James Comey, for example:

Exactly. The words "wretched refuse" there are fine to James Comey and other hard-core liberal Democrat partisans because, whether you're calling the people Pure Trash or not, you're letting that Trash in.

Trump's sin is not calling obvious shitholes shitholes, but in asking the question, "Why are we obligated to take other countries' problems into our own?"

The progs and Establishment cucks can't answer that question, so they want to argue about whether we should call the countries this wretched refuse comes from "shitholes" or the kinder, gentler term Garbage Pits of Wretched Refuse.

Donald Trump singlehandedly focused and reframed the entire debate over the purpose of immigration and what it in fact has done to us since 1965.

I'm no expert but I think shared values have more to do with strength than diversity.
Diversity even seems to be make countries strangely weaker.
How, in the name of all that is lovely, do illegal aliens make the U.S. stronger? How do immigrants who hate everything about the West and its traditional liberties make the West stronger?

157 You know what is REALLY freaking out the Left?

Because Trump has stolen their main weapon -- degradation of the culture -- and flipped it over to the conservative side.

You see, for decades, the left has striven to "freak out the squares," not just for the juvenile thrill of freaking out squares, but because Leninist/Gramscian theory states that one must "subvert the dominant mores" to overthrown capitalism.

Remember the Yippies, a leftist/anarchist street-theater political "movement" whose only goal was to be outrageous and offensive? That wasn't just some stupid naive goofing off for the sake of it -- that was actually a conscious political act, to degrade the national discourse. And the Yippies were sort of the distilled unadulterated version of this leftist strategy that still goes on constantly.

They think that if they are the funny and vivacious "outsiders" making the proper decent people in their Victorian dresses faint onto their fainting couches, that they will win the public's approval and cause society to crumble.

But Trump has completely flipped the script. Now HE is the one saying and doing the outrageous things, and the LEFT are the prudes clutching their pearls and fainting onto their fainting couches.

Trump is the rebel. Trump is the outsider. The LEFT are the new "squares." And Trump has make conservatism the new counter-culture.

This is what the Left is truly going insane oiver. They ARE outraged by his verbiage, but not for the shallow faux-reason of it being impolite, but because he has forced them to assume the role of the uptight prissy dowager bleating "Dearest me!!" and fanning her herself before flamboyantly pretend-fainting onto a plush divan.

I'm sure he said something similar, in talking about ALL the countries on the table, maybe not calling out Haiti specifically. 171 74 Here's my take:

1. Dumb of Trump to say that, especially in front of partisan hacks like Durbin. Unforced error.

2. Pearl clutching by Dems/Media is obviously phony and they can all got to hell.

3. Kevin Williamson has said the same thing about parts of rural America so he can eat a bag of dicks.
Posted by: Benji Carver at January 12, 2018 01:24 PM (OD2ni)

I'll leave it to those smarter than myself whether this was an unforced error. But as far as the pearl-clutchers are concerned (and Williamson can go f**k himself), I would ask them if they object to the style of Trump's comments or the substance. The former is fair enough, but if they're seriously questioning the latter, I think the response should be just to stare at them a while.

173 I know what Scott Adams, of Dilbert fame will say, having read him a lot lately - (and yes I will ignore the issue of whether or not Trump actually said the word, who cares now)

What Trump has done, with his enemies help, is to control the language and control the thinking of everyone on this issue by defining the language on his terms at the very beginning. Look what people are repeating, even his enemies - "shithole, shithole, shithole" - and those like Joan Walsh, who try to deny the existence of shitholes look like instant idiots as soon as they talk.

So yeah, Trump is vulgar, whatever, who didn't know that?

The entire immigration debate in front of the American people now is, do we want to take in people from these shitholes because we're such good people? Or do we want to stop and ask "hey, why are we bringing in so many people from these shitholes?"

That's the question now. Can't be changed, the terms have been set. On that question, how do you think the voters will choose?

Well, so did most of the past rulers of Haiti. It's a tough gig.

When I was there the 2nd time, the J-2 informed us that a crowd of Haitians had burned a woman and her young daughter on the steps of the national cathedral the night before, because they were witches who had stolen a baby's soul and refused to give it back.

1. Imagine the Monty Python jokes that went around the briefing room (I denounce us all retroactively).

186 As a thought experiment of sorts, mostly to confirm my biases, I read NRO over the last 24 hours. Their take went from essentially the same one here to pearl-clutching, almost seamlessly. They actually do shape their opinions based on how their peers view them. NR can't die soon enough, but it's a pretty accurate reflection of the Establishment GOP, which also is terminal (Paul Ryan just labeled Trump's comments "unfortunate" but "hoped" for amnesty still).

These things are objectively true:

1. "Temporary" doesn't mean "permanent."
2. Haiti is a shithole.
3. The United States must end chain migration, and quite frankly a total moratorium has to be on the table for the nation to survive.

I'll have the same opinions in 24 hours, too.

If this is true, then the logical step would not to just let everyone in here, but to make those other countries more diverse. I mean, if that's where we're getting our strength, and all, then if other countries become more diverse, then they'll become better and nobody will need to leave them in the first place!

Oh, what's that? That won't work? Why not? Just add more diversity to Haiti, Somalia, or whatever and all their problems will go away!

America has always an experiment...a Republic unlike others...with people coming here to work hard and create the country and share a common culture and goals and be American.

Now, it appears, if I take into account the last many years...we need to get rid of whites who are evil; re-write the constitution b/c it was written by slave owners, make the majority population mexican and black., b/c whites are evil and responsible for all problems. Turn our country into a shithole run by oligarchs...decimate the middle class so we can go back to serfdom. Oh, and get rid of 2 genders and move to 57. 350 apparently the worst thing about the nuke deal was that we gave Iran everything they wanted up front, while they only promised to do some things for us over time. So getting out of the deal now only means that we agree that they don't have to do anything they agreed to do, we already did everything they wanted.

And we could put sanctions on again, but now they'd be useless because every European country is selling them stuff hand over fist, along with the Russians, and we don't have the leverage at this point in time to make them quit.

So yeah, Obama and Valerie screwed us so completely that there is no good short term way out of being screwed; in fact anything we can do at this point only screws us even more.

Why would people from Norway want to immigrate here? They have actual health care, and longer life expectancy.

Some call "people from Norway" "Norwegians". And most of the elements of their "actual health care" were invented for the American health care market because we have been the only ones who actually paid for medical R+D. Then Norway (and its oil money) can pick up those drugs and procedures on the cheap after all the R+D and testing and practice have been done here, for people who have paid for it.

374 I thought Acosta invented this trope. Quote a poem, not a law. Then add all sorts of assumptions to that poem that are not in the poem.

"Diversity" is not mentioned. Letting in criminals, or even people with no desire to understand our nations ideals is "diverse". Letting in Muslims, who if they are consistent reject our constitution on principle, is also "diverse".

There is nothing in the poem that demands that Lady Liberty be so committed to diversity that she opens up the golden door and lifts her light to some bandito who will bash her over the head, enter, and proceed to despoil and shoot up the place once he gets inside.

It leaves aside the whole question of merit, of worthiness which I think is inherent in the poem. But the left reads in the exact opposite intent. That it demands we let in people who are too debased to understand the sentiment of the poem. People who would use the generous sentiment in the poem as a weapon to psychologically bludgeon us with in order to despoil us and destroy our system of government.

You were put on a boat back to your country of origin if you were sick or mentally retarded or lacked somewhere to go to once you were released or generally would not have been able to support yourself (assuming there was no one to support you when you landed).

Even at that, unrestrained immigration ended up causing the worst ecological disaster in US history (the Dust Bowl). The government opened up grasslands that were supremely unsuited to long term farming to ease the social pressure and pressure on job markets caused by burgeoning immigrant populations.

They hate Trump because he uses rhetoric.

These places are Sh!+holes. The LIV knows it, the people who came from there know it, because that is in fact why the left. He uses rhetoric to ask a logical question . . . why import so many? 410 Poetry is poetry, not law.

Christians get in trouble a lot doing this: treating different literary forms as the same. You say and write things in poetry in a manner that often is exaggerated, overstated, or broadly written to mean a more specific exact thing, for effect or style.

You cannot make policy based on a poem, nor yet law. You take principles and ideas from it, you learn from it, but you don't make it mandatory. Nobody really wants to be referred to as "wretched refuse" but the poem uses that term as an overstated exaggeration to mean the woeful people rejected by their previous national origin. Not literally trash that we ought to take in despite being worthless and even corrosive to the culture.

As RedBanzai noted above, even as people were shuffling past that poem on the wall, the immigration department was refusing people who were clearly of no benefit to the nation and would actually be dangerous or destructive to it.

The US still hasn't reached third world corruption levels. Everyone with a little bit of authority demands a bribe. Trash guy? Bribe.

Cop on the corner? Bribe.
Principal at your kids school? Bribe.
Just to do their job half assedly and not actively screw you over.

When is the last time you had a cop or DMV worker demand a bribe? I think it happens sometime and somewhere in the US, but not to everyone everywhere.

And the homeless are no joke. Street people with genuine mental illness and drug addiction in the US look better than your average beggar in the Philippines.

421 So sick of people pretending that America's greatness and genius is because of "diversity." That is a crock.

The fact is that America's greatness and genius is because of its ideals: freedom, self-governance, rule of law. That was what attracted so many immigrants here. They wanted to come to America because it was already great; they didn't make it great.

And in fact, the tens of millions of foreigners swarming across our borders in recent decades, thumbing their noses at our laws and our customs, consuming our public resources while setting up their own little socialist or communist or Islamic fiefdoms within our country, are eroding our greatness, which is why it needs to stop.

And James Comey is an idiot. Trump was completely justified in booting the silly, pretentious, holier-than-thou twat.

Trump is indeed the outsider, because the Uniparty and the rainbow colors lighting up the White House showed that the PC Left runs the show.

The other side of that is the Shadow Gov' that was behind all the chaos, as they marched through our institutions.

It's hard to fight "them" when their is no clear them. We now have shadow government AND shadow banning, shadow algorithms that control our search results. Pedophile Island and the Fusion/FBI/MSM united effort to destroy Trump has revealed "Them". We hope.

433 If one more f*cking leftard quotes "The New Colossus" I am going to absolutely go nuclear on someone's "sh*thole" with my foot.

It is not only NOT in the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence or even the Federalist Papers, (as pointed out above) it is also not even ON or part of the Statue of Liberty. It is not on the Statue, was not made by anyone associated with sculpting or building the statue. It was a poem written by some early "progressive" who was influenced by the statue and is in a plaque in the museum inside the statue. How it became the basis for anything related to policy is truly beyond me. Perhaps someone should piton out to these morons like Comey that a mere twenty years after the plaque was placed inside the statues museum the United States suspended ALL immigration for 40 years.

FFS

The Statue is an homage to the United States, and is a representation of the US, its freedom and systems of law and justice, being a light unto the world. It is not a signpost meant to say: "Hey everyone come live here - we have no rule of law and everyone has the right to come here"

Hey, at least they have the potential to give rise to another Aristotle someday.

The other shitholes ... not so much. Or at least, they haven't shown any evidence that their communities are capable of improving themselves.

We've given them so much aid and guidance over the years ... still, nada. What we've done for them in place might be taken as an experiment, to see if they are capable of improvement, and if they thus might be worthy of American citizenship. The experiment doesn't seem to have worked. So until such time as things change, I think we need a ban on immigration from shitholes.

Yes and No. The wave of Jewish scientists who were forced out of Europe and came here made the US the first nuclear power, which determined who was to rule the 20th century. If Europe hadn't gone so amazingly anti-Jew (not that they could have helped themselves, anyway) for another 20 years the Germans probably would have been the world's first nuclear power and the world would be a very, very, very different place today.

America has benefited greatly from immigrants ... but not from all classes of immigrants - not even from most. Real progress is pushed by a very few geniuses and those are the ones we should really be interested in. Those are the ones that really helped America, not just mindless masses from every shithole in the world.

America also benefited greatly from having about ZERO muslims for most of its existence (up until the last 30 years, really).

501 When the great waves of immigrants came over in the 19th century, they weren't welcome here because of "diversity." They were tolerated (at best) because we needed bodies to plow fields, dig ditches and work in factories.

Mostly but they still interacted with each other. In combat, those careful divisions of who is in what group kind of dissolve into a big mess. Remember that episode of Band of Brothers where they assault that german artillery emplacement?

And that's the core of it. Over the past few decades our immigration has been converted from attracting and accepting the best and brightest from other countries (Come here and maximize your potential in free America!) to us being obligated to save people currently living in failed states.

While there are many good, hard-working people from Haiti and other countries who can and have immigrated to the US, the Dems/Left are much more interested in bringing the illiterate, diseased and/or criminal masses.

Partly due to the real obsession and hate from Hitler, but be realistic: men like Heydrich and Himmler would, and did, kill Roma, Slavs, and especially other politically undesirable Teutons with equal indifference to basic decency.

The most important, world-changing, positive, historic, prosperous, and successful period in the history of any nation in all of history was the period in which the US had essentially zero immigration. Because masses of immigrants had been absorbed, Americanized, and their talents unleashed by what actually accounts for America's greatness: freedom, ordered liberty, rule of law, limited government, and a generous spirit.

And those systems need to be shut the hell down, with refugee help only being temporary: you can come here, stay here until your nation calms down, then go the hell back. Keep in mind, the line back in the '80s was that rich republicans wanted to import workers to undercut the union guys wages; and large numbers of democrats were vehemently opposed to Reagan's amnesty on that very basis.

I do remember him talking about how modern young people won't do field work like the used to, and that's a fact.

I just think that he's getting along in years, isn't as relevant and cutting edge as he used to be and hasn't been funny as he once was for a long time now.
