New Method for Determining Historical Earth Temperature Finds That Earth Warmed... Only 0.1 Degree Celsius Over Past 50 Years
Ocean temperatures have risen only 0.1 degree Celsius over the last five decades, according to a landmark study some scientists argue could change the way researchers measure the ocean's temperature levels. Each layer of water in the ocean has vastly different temperatures, so determining the average temperature is nearly impossible without glossing over important data. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego decided on a different model – they measured the ratio of noble gases in the atmosphere, which are in direct relation to the ocean's temperature. Geoscientist Jeff Severinghaus, an academic at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, measured values of the noble gases argon, krypton, and xenon in air bubbles captured inside ice cores in Antarctica. Krypton and xenon are released into the atmosphere in known quantities as the ocean warms, according to the study, which was published Thursday in Nature Journal "This method is a radically new way to measure change in total ocean heat," Severinghaus said in a post on the Scripps website. "It takes advantage of the fact that the atmosphere is well-mixed, so a single measurement anywhere in the world can give you the answer." Severinghaus measured values of the noble gases argon, krypton, and xenon in air bubbles captured inside ice cores in Antarctica. Krypton and xenon, which are remarkably stable regardless external factors, are released into the atmosphere in known quantities as the ocean warms.Assuming that they're right that the concentration of these trace gasses is directly proportional to atmospheric heat, this seems to be, for once, an actually accurate method of discovering historical global climate changes.

Increases in CO2 better fit the data as a "lagging result" rather than a "leading cause." It's why you see bubbles when you boil water, and why fish die in tanks when the water gets too warm.

But there is no lack of reasonably strong proxy data in the geologic record for tracking climate changes. This is where all the pre-AGW scandal science came from.
"Inter-glacial" is just the most recent and obvious (due to visible topography) of inferences gained from the geologic record.
Finally, ace, it is critical that the only policy-relevant thing is *still* not addressed in any way by the new approach to global temp estimation - the causes and dynamics of changes in global temps, or "climate". This is an area where even the "skeptics" constantly stipulate the key logical premise of the authoritarian lysenkoists. Somehow there is nothing close to a convincing explanation/understanding of the massive changes in earth's climate going back billions of years - yet, magically somehow, we understand that CO2 is now "forcing" change today. The National Geographic Society used to be a throwback to the old natural philosopher days when men of science and learning would go somewhere, study something, and come back with a report to the society. That would be bound into a journal and sent out.
They abandoned that about 30 years ago, jettisoning the science and concepts of academia and geographic travel for activism.

That's the point of actual conservation.
Is it possible to do x with a lessened environmental impact and, if so, how is that done and, if it can be done, what are the second and third tier effects?
Or let's say protecting the spotted owl. If we place preservation of habitat over logging, then what happens to the loggers? What happens to the towns in which they live? Is there a way to move to forest management which allows both to take place?

Whoever wondered how significant inferences or understanding could come from (disputed) data covering 50 years of a system that is at least 3.5 billion years old ..... bingo. Especially when (via geologic record) we are certain there were gigantic oscillations in earth's overall climate - many of them. Maybe 100s of times. All of it before man existed.
To the logical mind, this is the very first thing that is troubling about the climate lysenkoists' nonsense. Find another "theory" that is taken seriously that cannot be falsified, cannot explain even recent data, cannot predict, cannot explain most *actual* data (geologic record). Rhetorical question. The absurdity of this entire thing is one of the major indictments against modern society, and the basis for pessimism.

We aren't having those discussions because we are massively spoiled and have subsumed rational discussion for hysterical overreaction.
The problem is that a marginal increase in the cost of fuel or food in the United States doesn't have much of an existential impact here. It's mostly a PITA.
But for the people on the margins, they die. Maybe not many, but some die of malnutrition or lack of access to medical care or basic services like clean water. And we in the 1st World are too fucking oblivious to care. So the fucking Spotted Owl gets to dictate who lives and dies.

Yeah ... it's laughable. Mandelbrot addressed exactly this sort of thing in his seminal paper about chaos, "How Long Is the Coastline of Britain?".
And one of the other pioneers of chaos theory - Lorenz - was a meteorologist who explained how a dynamical system like the weather could not be predicted very far in advance no matter how much computing power was applied. Ironic that it's meteorologists (and climate scientologists) who are abusing computer models for long-range forecasts of climate and then claiming those models as "proof". Lorenz would be cutting heads off.

But in this case there may be related causation, but it is the opposite of what the whole AGW lie is based on. Warming may actually CAUSE most of the increase in CO2, not the other way around.

No kidding. As someone raised in the old tradition of conservation that emphasized this thing called "stewardship", I just shake my head at the crap that gets pushed these days. Detergents that don't clean. Clothes dryers that take three cycles to dry. Toilets you have to flush twice. Placing vast areas off limits to use so future generations can...stare uselessly at them because they aren't allowed to profit from them, either.
Why, it's almost as if the point isn't sustainability or responsible management of resources, it's to cripple our economy and standard of living instead...

Also, Global warming gasses work by absorbing the heat energy (IR) from the sun, and Black body radiation from the Earth...
And all of the IR Energy in CO2s bandwidth is ALREADY being absorbed by existing CO2 and Existing Water Vapor...
Adding CO2 won't absorb more energy, because there is no more energy that it CAN absorb.
Whole theory is easily disprovable by measurable science...

I think I mentioned before but at the Old Firm people were always leaving the lights on in conference rooms that weren't in use. I would turn them off and yell at people. It got to the point that if I was walking by and the light was on I would stick my hand in the door and turn off the lights. I wouldn't, you know, necessarily check to see if people were in there or anything.
Look. If you don't want the lights turned off on you in the middle of a client meeting, stop leaving the lights on all the time.

The temp a few inches down may be a factor in the surface temp but it is not the surface temp. Or do they include the core temp too when they calculate the temp of the planet? If that is the case I would WAG that the temp of the planet is on order of thousands of degrees.

I believe you BUT there are other mechanisms we don't understand in the whole equation of what goes on in "the environment". More of anything will have an effect ... aerosols may be important, how does CO2 increase affect them? for instance.
Or more important probably, more CO2 does help plants grow, which I think is good. Man still has (probably) little effect on overall CO2, so even that doesn't matter much. But the CO2 level has increased over 60 years, and it has (probably) helped green up arid places.
They are wrong on multiple levels.

It was reduced in impact by not burning high sulfur-containing fuels. I think acid rain really was a thing; it made perfect sense chemically, and the efforts to mitigate it actually worked.
I'm agnostic on ozone depletion. It was plausible chemically, because chlorine atoms would cause ozone to disproportionate catalytically, so even a small concentration of chlorine atoms could effect a large change. So ... jury's out, in my mind.
AGW, OTOH, I think is crap, not least because the CO2 partial pressure should have a stoichiometric, rather than a catalytic role, and the data do not indicate that.

You know why? Because Radon Gas is BULLCRAP. It has a very short half life, it lies on the ground, its radiation levels are less than what your freaking blender puts out. The studies demonstrating danger were done in old unventilated mines where uranium was found.

I agree but the problem is that they over exaggerate the issue. Superfund sites are an example of exaggeration. At least with the solutions and measure of success. This goes to atc rant about reasonable discussions. Both sides ( more one than the other) go to the extremes.

I think that it's an easy meme that if you're a sceptic etc. you don't care about the environment etc. It's doing things that are feasible and can be proved that it actually helps the environment. Ethanol is the perfect example of this. It's a boondoggle and it's crazy expensive and actually is worse for the environment than not.

I think WHO is actually using DDT again, and indeed massive broadcast overuse was probably a bad idea. But using it in African huts is good, and they rotate other chemicals so resistance is not built up (or if it already is)

So... the cold snap is due to global warming, and when it warms up that will also be evidence of global warming.
Please keep this in mind 3 weeks+ when talking to liberal friends. Show them the clips saying that cold temps were evidence of global warming (because of the polar vortex) and that warmer temps are *also* evidence of global warming.
They will angrily rebuff you, but it will put a pebble in their shoe and may eventually bring them around.

Was stationed on a destroyer pre Desert Storm... and we were once more going through the Total Quality Leadership crap (TQM for Military)... mission statements... civilian facilitators... they whole crap...
Day we pulled out for Storm, CO came over the 1MC and said, "Men, we are going to War, for the duration, we are all back in the Military, TQM programs are suspended for the duration"....
Whole... ship... cheered...
(There was a reason that Ship won Battle E two years in a row, and would have three but they couldn't do it...)

Yup. It's a scam.
I sold my mom's house several months ago, and got a bunch of bids for "Radon Abatement." I took the cheapest one, because all I needed was the certificate, and didn't gave a rat's ass about the actual abatement.
The range was amazing. $1,200-$4,000...all for essentially the same thing. Two hours of work and $100 worth of materials.

Interesting that you should mention this. Back in 1990 I came across a little article, naturally buried in the back of the newspaper, that reported that due to all the brouhaha about "global warming", NASA had gone back and checked ALL of their infrared data on the Earth, going back to the very first TIROS weather satellite launched in 1960, looking for any increase in the Earth's temperature. They found NO increase in the Earth's IR signature, at all. In other words, no temperature increase.
