New Method for Determining Historical Earth Temperature Finds That Earth Warmed... Only 0.1 Degree Celsius Over Past 50 Years

Science, unsettled.

Ocean temperatures have risen only 0.1 degree Celsius over the last five decades, according to a landmark study some scientists argue could change the way researchers measure the ocean's temperature levels.

Each layer of water in the ocean has vastly different temperatures, so determining the average temperature is nearly impossible without glossing over important data. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego decided on a different model – they measured the ratio of noble gases in the atmosphere, which are in direct relation to the ocean's temperature.

Geoscientist Jeff Severinghaus, an academic at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, measured values of the noble gases argon, krypton, and xenon in air bubbles captured inside ice cores in Antarctica. Krypton and xenon are released into the atmosphere in known quantities as the ocean warms, according to the study, which was published Thursday in Nature Journal

"This method is a radically new way to measure change in total ocean heat," Severinghaus said in a post on the Scripps website. "It takes advantage of the fact that the atmosphere is well-mixed, so a single measurement anywhere in the world can give you the answer."

Severinghaus measured values of the noble gases argon, krypton, and xenon in air bubbles captured inside ice cores in Antarctica. Krypton and xenon, which are remarkably stable regardless external factors, are released into the atmosphere in known quantities as the ocean warms.

Assuming that they're right that the concentration of these trace gasses is directly proportional to atmospheric heat, this seems to be, for once, an actually accurate method of discovering historical global climate changes.

Posted by: Axeman at January 08, 2018 04:25 PM (vDqXW)

50 ace it sounds like a logical approach, since the ocean's ability to absorb/hold certain gases is directly related to its temperature (one of the embarrassing mega-contraditions in known paleoclimate - that CO2 spikes usually *follow* ocean - and "global" - warming, as the oceans unload CO2 they can't hold at higher temps).

But there is no lack of reasonably strong proxy data in the geologic record for tracking climate changes. This is where all the pre-AGW scandal science came from.

"Inter-glacial" is just the most recent and obvious (due to visible topography) of inferences gained from the geologic record.

Finally, ace, it is critical that the only policy-relevant thing is *still* not addressed in any way by the new approach to global temp estimation - the causes and dynamics of changes in global temps, or "climate". This is an area where even the "skeptics" constantly stipulate the key logical premise of the authoritarian lysenkoists. Somehow there is nothing close to a convincing explanation/understanding of the massive changes in earth's climate going back billions of years - yet, magically somehow, we understand that CO2 is now "forcing" change today. Nope.

54 I think it was the WattsUpWithThat guy that looked at all (or most) of the sites used in the US for temp readings. He found most had been compromised by heat sinks built nearby.

Obviously growth over 50 years tended to expand sidewalks and pavement closer to where the readings were taken. Even when I was a kid I knew cities would retain heat at night more than countryside.

AND he found when temperatures were adjusted for "anomalies" the readings were adjusted toward the heat sink sites.

PLUS the evil researchers like Mann refuse to release the raw data.

AND Gore is a fat lying weasel with a heated pool that stole his ideas from his own prof, then called that prof senile when he rejected Gore's unscientific sensationalism.

The other point I love making is if we had an ice age and then left the ice age with a large temperature increase, isn't it clear that the Earth has HUGE temperature swings that has nothing to do with man-made carbon dioxide production.

91 Oxygen and CO2 in water go down as a fish tank warms up. Al Gore can run an experiment.

"Warm water cannot hold as much oxygen as cooler water can. In warm times of the year, this can cause oxygen depletion in the water.
Fish will initially react to lower oxygen levels by simply moving around less. They will swim less, and even eat less. As oxygen levels drop further, the fish begin to show labored breathing, and more rapid gill movement as they desperately attempt to get enough oxygen from the water by passing more water through their gills."

Posted by: Ignoramus at January 08, 2018 04:32 PM (cAXIk)

92 Pastafarian, note that as with all other "data", there is a struggle to distort ocean-surface data as well. There are two basic sets - a more recent one derived from networks of buoys, and an older one derived from measurements by ships crossing the oceans (the latter goes back quite some time).

Of course the new approach could bypass this by using a derivative measure (gas-absorption capacity) that attempts to be a proxy for all ocean temperature, not just surface.

They abandoned that about 30 years ago, jettisoning the science and concepts of academia and geographic travel for activism.

Is it possible to do x with a lessened environmental impact and, if so, how is that done and, if it can be done, what are the second and third tier effects?

Or let's say protecting the spotted owl. If we place preservation of habitat over logging, then what happens to the loggers? What happens to the towns in which they live? Is there a way to move to forest management which allows both to take place?

To answer an earlier question. Whoever wondered how significant inferences or understanding could come from (disputed) data covering 50 years of a system that is at least 3.5 billion years old ..... bingo. Especially when (via geologic record) we are certain there were gigantic oscillations in earth's overall climate - many of them. Maybe 100s of times. All of it before man existed.

To the logical mind, this is the very first thing that is troubling about the climate lysenkoists' nonsense. Find another "theory" that is taken seriously that cannot be falsified, cannot explain even recent data, cannot predict, cannot explain most *actual* data (geologic record). Rhetorical question. The absurdity of this entire thing is one of the major indictments against modern society, and the basis for pessimism.

The talk show queen will travel to Denmark next week to lobby International Olympic Committee members to award the 2016 Games to her beloved city.

The IOC will choose a host city Oct. 2, and Chicago is in a tight contest with Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo.

"I love and believe in Chicago, and I think it would be the perfect host city for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games," Winfrey said Wednesday.

Winfrey's addition adds some serious star power to what was already an impressive delegation. First lady Michelle Obama will lead the group and be joined by 14 Olympic and two Paralympic gold medalists, including Michael Johnson, Nadia Comaneci, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Nastia Liukin. The problem is that a marginal increase in the cost of fuel or food in the United States doesn't have much of an existential impact here. It's mostly a PITA.

Yeah ... it's laughable. Mandelbrot addressed exactly this sort of thing in his seminal paper about chaos, "How Long Is the Coastline of Britain?".

And one of the other pioneers of chaos theory - Lorenz - was a meteorologist who explained how a dynamical system like the weather could not be predicted very far in advance no matter how much computing power was applied. Ironic that it's meteorologists (and climate scientologists) who are abusing computer models for long-range forecasts of climate and then claiming those models as "proof". Lorenz would be cutting heads off.

Why, it's almost as if the point isn't sustainability or responsible management of resources, it's to cripple our economy and standard of living instead...

And all of the IR Energy in CO2s bandwidth is ALREADY being absorbed by existing CO2 and Existing Water Vapor...

But the stupefying ignorance of most people about the earth - and their indoctrination into "earth is fragile" mythology and emotional devotion - is a huge obstacle. What % of Americans who are most vocal or extreme/ignorant about "environmental" issues have ever been out of sight of land on an ocean in a small craft? 100 miles from civilization of any kind in a wilderness? Outside at serious elevation in the middle of winter without shelter? Outside far from civilization in a real desert?

That would be "never before" in my guess. As in "we didn't ever
measure it before and further are unable to measure the ocean floor to
any level of exactitude of .04% let alone .004"
.
.
.Humans did not have the ability to accurately measure the depth of the World's oceans to within ~5-25 foot accuracy a mere 50 years ago let alone measuring anything to within ten thousands of an inch.

We are talking about multiple orders of magnitude difference here about the same as comparing apples to elephants, it's meaningless until they have multiple decades of consistent measurements but they don't care.

I believe you BUT there are other mechanisms we don't understand in the whole equation of what goes on in "the environment". More of anything will have an effect ... aerosols may be important, how does CO2 increase affect them? for instance.

Or more important probably, more CO2 does help plants grow, which I think is good. Man still has (probably) little effect on overall CO2, so even that doesn't matter much. But the CO2 level has increased over 60 years, and it has (probably) helped green up arid places.

They are wrong on multiple levels.

It was reduced in impact by not burning high sulfur-containing fuels. I think acid rain really was a thing; it made perfect sense chemically, and the efforts to mitigate it actually worked.

I'm agnostic on ozone depletion. It was plausible chemically, because chlorine atoms would cause ozone to disproportionate catalytically, so even a small concentration of chlorine atoms could effect a large change. So ... jury's out, in my mind.

AGW, OTOH, I think is crap, not least because the CO2 partial pressure should have a stoichiometric, rather than a catalytic role, and the data do not indicate that.

397 The owners of my mom's duplex are selling the place. So they had some guys come in to check Radon gas levels.

Now... the building is up on like 14" blocks, its raised from the ground like its ready for flooding or something. Radon gas is heavier than air.

The guys that came to measure it dutifully put the devices in the duplex on both sides and found no Radon. If they'd had a shred of credibility, honor, or honesty they would have just said "you don't have any" and left without leaving the machines, but no, they went through the motions.

You know why? Because Radon Gas is BULLCRAP. It has a very short half life, it lies on the ground, its radiation levels are less than what your freaking blender puts out. The studies demonstrating danger were done in old unventilated mines where uranium was found.

Now... the building is up on like 14" blocks, its raised from the
ground like its ready for flooding or something. Radon gas is heavier
than air.

The guys that came to measure it dutifully put the devices in the duplex on both sides
and found no Radon. If they'd had a shred of credibility, honor, or
honesty they would have just said "you don't have any" and left without
leaving the machines, but no, they went through the motions.

You know why? Because Radon Gas is BULLCRAP. It has a very short
half life, it lies on the ground, its radiation levels are less than
what your freaking blender puts out. The studies demonstrating danger
were done in old unventilated mines where uranium was found.

Reengineering! It's totally not the exact same goddamn thing as TQM, swearsies!
Posted by: Insomniac - Meet the New Year, same as the old year at January 08, 2018 05:25 PM (NWiLs)

True story.... or Sea Story... take yer pick...

Was stationed on a destroyer pre Desert Storm... and we were once more going through the Total Quality Leadership crap (TQM for Military)... mission statements... civilian facilitators... they whole crap...

Day we pulled out for Storm, CO came over the 1MC and said, "Men, we are going to War, for the duration, we are all back in the Military, TQM programs are suspended for the duration"....

Whole... ship... cheered...

(There was a reason that Ship won Battle E two years in a row, and would have three but they couldn't do it...)

493 You can't sell any building without a clean Radon check, that's why they do it.

Posted by: The Great White Scotsman at January 08, 2018 05:20 PM (+Dllb)

Yup. It's a scam.

I sold my mom's house several months ago, and got a bunch of bids for "Radon Abatement." I took the cheapest one, because all I needed was the certificate, and didn't gave a rat's ass about the actual abatement.

The range was amazing. $1,200-$4,000...all for essentially the same thing. Two hours of work and $100 worth of materials.

494 Ethanol is bad in every possible way. There are even people being enslaved in South America to produce ethanol. Its awful for your car, doesn't save anything, produces pollution, costs more, drives up food prices, and is just a complete boondoggle that congress needs to eliminate but... never will because it makes big agriculture rich from corn subsidies.

495 I was written up by safety because I used a lead brick as a doorstop. The brick might abrade and release lead particles, you see.
Posted by: pep at January 08, 2018 05:22 PM (LAe3v)

Safety wankers in the lab one time came across a latex glove filled with water hanging from a vac rack (as somebody's lame joke). They pondered this at some length, and then decided it was OK, as it would help to put any fires underneath it.

I'm not making this up.

Top. Men.

498 Canaries would die off so much more quickly. I never understood why.

Posted by: BurtTC at January 08, 2018 05:25 PM (9chmE)

Higher respiratory rate.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at January 08, 2018 05:26 PM (HWZCe)

Only before they died.

Posted by: BurtTC at January 08, 2018 05:32 PM (9chmE)

499 Canaries are the veal of the bird world, live their entire lives in small cages they have no lung capacity so the slightest air deviation drops them like a sack of potatoes.
Sparrows can fly across the country in migration, probably could hold their breath underwater if the wanted to.

500 People have been sold on Radon being deadly -- people will swear to it "my dad got lung cancer, see, Radon!" -- so they demand checks to houses and worry about it when they buy it.

Even Holmes, who really ought to know better (the Holmes on homes guy) is in on it. Total rip off, a complete scam.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at January 08, 2018 05:33 PM (39g3+)

501 It's a boondoggle and it's crazy expensive

It's cheap octane rating that you'd need more refining or lead to replace.

Posted by: DaveA at January 08, 2018 05:35 PM (FhXTo)

502 478 463 Ethanol is the perfect example of this. It's a boondoggle and it's crazy expensive and actually is worse for the environment than not.
1. Starve brown and black children
2. Fuel SUVs with corn
3. Increase greenhouse gases to drive spoiled children to scoreless games
4. destroy wetlands and open lands

503 I have 2 cool lead bricks that were weights in a lab experiment cabinet, they have thread holes that the eye bolt was located.
But I collect lead to melt, its not what will kill me.

504 262 you didn't see the picture in the morning thread a couple days ago???

506 462 This Goop-Exclusive pouch holds and includes eight ( magically-charged stones: citrine, clear quartz, rose quartz, black obsidian, amethyst, lapis lazuli, carnelian, and chrysocolla, which is also known as The Goddess Stone.

sounds suspiciously like a nice set of DampersandD dice.

507 If they can somehow take that 0.1 degree Celsius and create a nice looking chart with an arrow on the right that shockingly goes upwards at a steep angle and gets more fiery red as it climbs I think they might win a nobel prize in science.

508 Anybody with an unclouded view should be able to see that the libs are trying to create a new orthodoxy.
How dare you think elections can be rigged? How dare you not accept Global Warming? How dare you not accept the findings of (4 out of) 17 intelligence agencies?! How dare you not think gay weddings are completely equal? How dare you not think that boys can be girls simply by desiring?
Every day in many ways they just demand more compliance with their viewpoint.
Posted by: Axeman at January 08, 2018 04:25

And they think Trump is crazy? Yeah right, crazy like a fox. He got elected f***ing president.

509 This is a Trojan Horse. They look like complete charlatans based on the temperature actually going down the last decade plus. Therefore, any relationship to carbon emissions is negligible. So they had to reset and remove that inconvenient truth. This is how they're doing it.

They scrapped their process because it showed the wrong thing. So, now here comes another attempt.

Posted by: Orson at January 08, 2018 06:23 PM (8QpZu)

510 Well the satellites have been showing no appreciable increase in the Earth's temperature for the past few decades. So Global Warming Jihadis at NOAA and other places have started to recalibrate those measurements for accuracy IIRC.

Interesting that you should mention this. Back in 1990 I came across a little article, naturally buried in the back of the newspaper, that reported that due to all the brouhaha about "global warming", NASA had gone back and checked ALL of their infrared data on the Earth, going back to the very first TIROS weather satellite launched in 1960, looking for any increase in the Earth's temperature. They found NO increase in the Earth's IR signature, at all. In other words, no temperature increase.

511 Present-day fears of lead are puzzling to anyone who remembers hot-metal typesetting and printing, SOP in the publishing industry till about 1980. It was all lead all the time, yet compositors and pressmen were as healthy and long-lived as any industrial workers; meanwhile the writers and editors whose stuff they printed died like flies from booze and cigarettes.

512 A more fundamental concern than the correlation between trapped gases and the atmosphere is the assumptions underlying their dating of the ice core. The very real 'Glacier Girl' - a P-38 Lightning that landed on a glacier in Greenland in 1942 and was beneath 268ft of ice when it was recovered 50 years later - seems to have been completely ignored be scientists, who've stuck with their theoretical indirect methods instead.
