Thus, we see that in response to a mandatory hike of the minimum wage in the Canadian province of Ontario, a franchisee of the popular Tim Hortons coffee chain has chosen to reduce certain employee benefits in response to higher labor costs rather than lay off any of their workers, according to The Washington Times. The franchise owners, Jeri Horton-Joyce and Ron Joyce Jr. — daughter and son-in-law of founder Tim Horton — let their employees know in a letter that some of their benefits had been cut in response to the minimum wage rising by $2.40, an unfortunate but necessary unintended consequence of the mandatory pay raise. MacGyver, alive and well. Well sort of. When you hear “global warming” what do you imagine? First, you probably think of Al Gore (or ManBearPig, if you’re into that.) Next, you likely imagine rising temperatures that cause melting ice caps, rising water, and buildings floating in the water. According to Al Gore, global warming doesn’t just mean “warming.” In fact, it can mean bitterly cold temperatures as well! How’s that for a leap in logic? No wonder they switched to “climate change.” Even liberals might begin to question the veracity of the global warming myth if it meant they were also hot and cold. PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota Highway Patrol officials found a dead woman wrapped in a blanket in an SUV stopped after a high-speed chase with a drunken driver from California, a trooper said in a court affidavit filed Tuesday. A state court complaint says 30-year-old Tosten Walsh Lommen, of Santa Cruz, faces charges including aggravated eluding and drunken driving. Attorney General Marty Jackley’s office said in a statement that state authorities are investigating the “suspicious death” after the woman’s body was found during a search of the vehicle Lommen was driving. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is commending a Winter Haven man for alerting authorities about a drunk driver on New Year’s Eve — but the caller ended up being the one arrested on DUI charges. Michael Lester, 39, called 911 shortly before 9 p.m. to report that he was driving drunk “all over Winter Haven,” according to a call released by authorities Friday. “I dunno. I’m drunk. I don’t know where I’m at,” he said when a dispatcher asked for his location. ![]() Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

We know it can cause extremes of heat, and cold, as well as flooding, hurricanes, etc. But the latest research shows that Climate Change could cause temperatures to remain relatively constant. The HOA covenants, signed without reading at most closings, spell out the boundaries of the permissible. I was a HOA President for 5 two-year terms. In Reston, the planned community. Liberal Control Freak heaven. I wanted my property values to go up and I wanted to not be an asshole. So I stepped up. I sold at the tip-top of the market, and made people's lives better. I kept others from being assholes over me, like the process obsessed hill rats. The HOA provided trash pickup, street lighting , common grounds, a playground, and parking lot & sidewalk maintenance. After that experience, I was much more conservative. Posted by: NaCly Dog at January 06, 2018 10:13 PM (hyuyC) 60

In this particular case [Pereira] installed two 20 [foot-long] flag
poles [sic] on both sides of his driveway (one on each side) without first submitting the plans or seeking approval, Sears said. The problem is that one of the poles is in a utility easement, both poles are within the 25 [feet] building setback line and the restrictions (and Texas Property Code) only allow for the installation of one flag pole. Um, the Marine veteran is clearly in the wrong. Also, had he submitted plans to the Architectural Committee first, they might have explained to him all of that in their disapproval reply and invited him to correct and resubmit. He's gonna lose because the Texas Property Code was amended to allow ONE flagpole on the property flying ONE flag at a time - US Flag or TX State Flag or Military Branch flag. So I looked at the "Alcohols Banned in Ohio" article since it is my state. Its a bit misleading, even the article is a bit incorrect. Stupid? Yes absolutely. You can't get full strength Everclear in Ohio for instance. The article writer makes it sound like ALL Flavored Vodkas are being banned. But you go looking through the list and its Smirnoff Root Beer Float, Smirnoff Pear, Absolut Cilantro, Skyy Vanilla Bean, Skyy Grape, and others like that. They're not getting rid of Strawberry or Orange flavored Vodkas which I bet are more popular types of flavored vodkas.
I'd actually be more pissed about the apparent removal of some of the sizes of Captain Morgan Tattoo, and Admiral Nelson Rum than the flavored vodka you maybe try once and never buy again. Posted by: buzzion at January 06, 2018 10:24 PM (cAnNx) 92

How about cleaning your friend's father's house where her deadbeat sister had been "living" (really she'd been sleeping at her boyfriend's house 5-6 nights a week and trashing her father's house), and finding a plastic gas station bag full to the brim of sex toys. Sex toys that appeared to not have been cleaned. Possibly ever. And that was some of the least disgusting stuff we found in that house... shudder.
Posted by: deepelemblues at January 06, 2018 10:17 PM (osJSG) Decades ago, in my youth, I worked for a moving company. We got a pack and move for a really nice house in the suburbs, where the parents had been living in the new city and left the 18 year old daughter alone for the summer. Rather than let the dog out to do it's business, it was obvious that the dog had just been put in the basement. Since my job for the morning was to pack everything in the basement, I packed everything in the basement. Mostly Christmas decorations. Mostly. Here is my observation on HOAs.
The smaller the government the more intrusive and dictatorial it becomes. Part of the reason for this is that a National Government potentially has the entire country from which to choose its members. An HOA only has one neighborhood. And, the people you get in HOAs generally are all the frustrated, small minded, leftist pricks who want to run your life - who then get to f*ck with you personally - through their position in the HOA. Posted by: NaCly Dog at January 06, 2018 10:24 PM (hyuyC) Yes. HOA foreclosure on a home for non-payment of Maintenance Fees is a stop loss measure. The HOA rarely gets the accumulated unpaid fees, interest, and legal expenses back, but it stops the bleeding and results in a new (hopefully responsible) homeowner. If a homeowner ain't paying their Maint Fees, they likely as not are not paying their property taxes or mortgage payments either. So bankruptcy and/or foreclosure by the bank or tax assessor usually happen first and they are first in line (ahead of the HOAs) for recovery. Sorry,, the HOA is in the right here. If you dont like hoa rules dint buy a house in an hoa. The rules are clearly stated in the cc&rs.
I have successfully and happily lived in a townhouse in an HOA community since 1985. I bought it, knowing the rules and was fine with the idea of the limitations imposed. I love the fact that I have not raked a leaf in over 32 yrs. Hours after the snow stopped last Thursday (over 7 inches) the street was shoveled and the side walks all the way up to my front steps were cleared My HOA has a professional manager but also has a Board of Directors where issues can be addressed. We have, with the concerted efforts by several non-HOA Trustee homeowners, acquired sufficient proxies to ensure we have an official quorum (just 10%) of Members to have an election of Trustees and to vote on other matters. A self-managed HOA is the best possible arrangement, BUT!!! It takes good homeowners willing to serve their neighbors. Like Pres. Reagan said we are always just one generation away from losing freedom and liberty, our HOA is always just one election away from being replaced by a 3rd party for-profit management company. Some last thoughts on HOAs. If you have jerks in your HOA, run it yourself. The time commitment does not have to be oppressive. Especially with a local & talented board. Our HOA was not in a town or city. It was one of a number of other HOAs embedded in a planned community (a much bigger HOA in the suburbs). Goodnight. Posted by: NaCly Dog at January 06, 2018 11:14 PM (hyuyC) 242
I don't get it. Trash pickup, street plowing,
playgrounds, etc. That is all included in my city taxes. Are people in HOA communities paying twice, like folks who send their kids to private schools? Posted by: cfo mom at January 06, 2018 11:06 PM (RfzVr) Good question. No. For those of us who live in the unincorporated part of the county, there is no city to provide those services. Neither does the county. So our HOA provides garbage pickup, street lighting, security, and mosquito spraying in addition to maintaining all the common areas and amenities. Posted by: Count de Monet at January 06, 2018 11:14 PM (QLvwG) 243

Ha! I have seen anyone walk one through the neighborhood but it most likely would be allowed. My next door neighbor is President of the Board. He is a big libertarian -his attitude is live and let live unless it impedes on someone else or endangers property or person. It takes a lot of residents to complain about some silly issue for him to take action. The Board meet quarterly so issues and complaints can be heard at that time. I'd never live in an HOA by choice, but for our coastal vacation condo, the HOA has been great. The few rules are reasonable.
One of the condo owners is the stereotypical old crank with too much time on his hands, but he's not on the board, although he'd like to be. The board is a group of competent conservative men who've been rockstars in the days since Harvey hit our building. As soon as people were allowed back on the island, they hit the ground running with the insurance adjusters, then hired the best demo and construction contractors, as well as architects who specialize in rebuilding high rises with hurricane damage. You always see the outrageous HOA stories, especially if there is a veteran and a flag involved -- though if you want to be a Philly lawyer about it, most flag regs are clearly expressed, and the veterans are willfully violating an agreement they did sign on to. They don't care to challenge the rule at a meeting, is all.
I just don't see much difference between an HOA that gets taken over by the very odd, and living in most incorporated towns or cities. You get some campaign going on, and your erstwhile enemies have zoning and land use, extreme views on health side-effects and climate, tax valuation, and eminent domain to use on you, without even moving on to shunning, fire-bombs and suits at common law. Other people are just dangerous to have around, is all. Bills of rights are malleable as time goes by, and attitudes mutate. Posted by: Stringer Davis at January 06, 2018 11:30 PM (H5rtT) 284

"We tried to tell them" when Ohio so-called privatized the liquor stores a couple of decades ago. Used to have uniformed counter clerks, and the display bottles were locked in the cases, sometimes behind bars. You had to fill out a little requisition form with the stub pencil provided, and the clerk brought your order out from the stockroom. Very Volstead-Acty.
Folks just presumed, when those guys lost their jobs, that we'd entered the new age. But the inventory and warehousing remained in the hands of those who, like the guy we had to deal with when we tried to get a permit to brew for market, considered "Control" to be the important word in Liquor Control Board. I used to have to make a couple of surreptitious trips to Indiana and Michigan every year to keep up the stock of odd things I'd learned to love. For a while there was on-line ordering, but I lost my Illinois supplier last year because of some new interpretation of state tax reciprocity. No problem with wine, but real liquor and liqueurs, they're not for us folk. I don't drink Absolut's ninty-leven flavoured wodkas because of "In An Absolut World" map showing Mexico holding the West, up to Montana. But that's me. When they announced that 100 or so brands were going on close-out sale, we made a little list and dutifully drove to the licensed shoppe that Kroger had spent a million to get from my Eastern-Rite Catholic "Arab" chums. And of the 100 brands, they had about half a dozen. Posted by: Stringer Davis at January 06, 2018 11:51 PM (H5rtT) 352

With regard to the censoring of the name "Wandering Dago", this madness has been building for quite some time. Back in the 70s, a teacher on Long Island was arrested for spray painting the street signs for "Guinea Woods Road", on the grounds that "guinea" was an anti-Italian slur. Which it is, but it's also many other things, including an old British monetary unit (21 shillings) and a bird. But no matter: the signs offended him, so they had to go.

Well, I got both my "Arizona cars" started and moved today. Got the TR6 started up, and backed out of the garage, no problem. That made way for the 1960 Studebaker Lark, which I'd had on the battery charger for several hours. I carefully primed the carburetor, and it started just about instantly, and filled the garage with a dense cloud of blue smoke (rings not seated in a freshly-"overhauled" engine).
Drove the Lark outside, noted the tires were low, so turned it around, back partly into the garage, and fired up my air compressor and aired up the tires. Started it again, and remarkably, no blue smoke, and it idled really smooth. Maybe it burned off all its oil? Parked behind the gate in the side yard. Now I can get at the rafters in the garage to add sisters to them, which was the main object of the exercise. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 07, 2018 12:51 AM (sD2WN) 538
I was never a fan of sit-coms, so I don't know much about Jerry Van Dyke's roles in them. But he was out and about as a stand-up storyteller back in the day when Cosby and Newhart were new, and you used to hear him once in a while on the Monitor Radio Network, along with Nichols and May.
And he told this one corn-pone, shaggy-dog story, so well, and there's only a couple of us left who'd even get it. There was this tough sheriff in a small town, and he didn't get on a-tall with one of Jerry's relatives. They had a sign at the city limits that said "Close exhaust cut-outs," and he pulled this guy over because he didn't think his exhaust cut-out was closed. "But I don't even have an exhaust cut-out," was the defense. "Well, get one," the sheriff said. And that's the joke. If you don't know how an exhaust cut-out works, it's not even. But I can remember our town having that sign. It's decades ago, now, but whenever I think of an exhaust cut-out, I remember ol' Jerry. This is not the first time the Democrats have used psychiatric slander against a political opponent. In the 1964 election 1000 psychiatrists joined in saying Goldwater was unqualified to be president for psychiatric reasons. Goldwater sued the magazine that published that tripe and won the suit contributing to the magazine's demise.

The Crab Nebula is an expanding gas cloud caused by a supernova that was visible to the naked eye in 1054.
The nebula was first seen with a telescope in the 1700s. Since then, it has been extensively studied and photographed. It is iconic. Here is a time-lapse movie of pictures taken by the same telescope during the last 10 years: https://www.astrobin.com/full/327338/0/ This is a reminder that when we see photos of stars and galaxies, they may look static, but they are constantly in motion. Sometimes, leak-down around valve stems after sitting for an extended period.
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at January 07, 2018 01:36 AM (9tO1t) I am familiar with that. Usually burns off after less than a minute goes by. This car is an oddball. As a 1960 Lark, it should have had the 170" flathead six, but a prior owner installed a 1963 OHV six, which makes a bit more power, but which is prone to cracking heads. I'm not a big fan of that engine. But the one in the Lark was stuck solid; would not move at all. And I didn't have a flattie to put in there. So I took and old OHV six I had in the barn, and built a "beater" engine out of entirely used parts, save for a few gaskets. Honed the cylinders real well, picked pistons that were in decent condtion. Piston rings, I deglazed each one with a drum sander on a Dremel tool. Hand-picked and Plasti-gaged bearings. Ground all the valves by hand. Test-ran in an old chassis, and it ran smooth with no knocks. I was hoping the rings would seat themselves, but had no real expectation that they would. Hauled it down to AZ last year, and installed it in the Lark, and got it fired up. Smoked steadily, the little I ran it. I don't really think it burned off 5 quarts of oil in less than an hour's total run time, but who knows? I plan to do the brakes on the car to make it roadworthy, then insure it and plate it, and take it out on the road to break in the rings, and see what happens. The problem with old condos is central air systems (among others things). Say, if on an early morning hour of oh, say right now, the emergency boilers shut down. That means my thermostat says its heating but its not. Just blowing room temperature. I.E. cool. Its ok though, its 8 degrees outside. I saw in the email I just got that an engineer is on the way. In the mean time I'll pull out my tiny little space heater and cover up in a blanket. Maybe watching golf in Maui, where is looks lovely and warm will help a little.

Ah yes, ham radio. The spot back in the 70s where folks would talk turkey about their political beefs.
Posted by: qdpsteve at January 07, 2018 02:15 AM (eMKNe) Back in the day, Ham radio operators didn't usually talk politics. It wasn't exactly forbidden, but it was understood that a ham license wasn't a broadcasting license. Hams tended to talk about their radio gear, most commonly. I know he's out of favor nowadays, but back in the 1960s, Bill Cosby had a hilarious bit about the Lone Ranger and Tonto.
It basically went: "It's always the same thing. The Lone Ranger sends Tonto into town and they beat the crap out of him. 'Nice to see you again, Tonto! Bam! Bam!' Then the Lone Ranger asks Tonto, 'did you get the message when you went into town?' 'Yes kemosabe, I got the message.' 'What did it say?' 'It say, Tonto no go to town!'" I live near Cerritos in California, where the whole town is basically an HOA.
For years there's been "Cerritos Colors," where you are supposedly only allowed to paint your house those shades. Don't know if they still enforce it, however. Also, a Toys 'R' Us opened there in 1972, and legend has it that the city harassed them for years because of the backwards 'R' in their logo. (Cerritos actually had a law on the books that all public signage must use proper English.) Finally sometime in the late 1990s, the store threatened to move out of town because they were so sick of it, at which point the city finally backed off and shut up about it. Last I heard, the 'R' is still backwards in their sign. ;-) Posted by: qdpsteve at January 07, 2018 02:30 AM (eMKNe) 668

Usually its not a good idea to recompress rings, not to mention they have a good chance of not being perfectly round because of wear on the thrust faces. I looked at Hat's post: I count 18 distinct values. 6 are used once, 10 are used twice, and 3 are used thrice. There are no doubles and only one pair (5 25). As mentioned previously, some of the values exceed the number of letters, so a substitution cipher is unlikely. It looks like the answer is obvious and likely known to many, but the data set is so small that the meaning cannot be deduced. Posted by: Arbalest at January 07, 2018 03:13 AM (FlRtG) 687

Concerned human-engineering globalist: "But . . . but, what will the rest of the world think?" Bloody Yank: "I don't give a damn." Trump is America's "I Don't Give A Damn" Imperial Troll and I absolutely love it. (For the first time in a long, long time, I got the presidential winner correct from the get-go, when he came down the escalator in Trump Tower and announced his candidacy. I just knew Trump would make a better than decent president, after the losers we've endured for decades, if not probably one of the better ones. But I had no idea he would be this good. Giving us Deplorables a voice, a fighter to take on all comers without needlessly and cringingly backtracking. We stripped the bedding and padding, and I will truck all to the coin laundry where they have big machines. The new baby made a little mess in the king sized bed.
We have forgiven her for that. It is all kind of exciting. Sort of like the Oregon trail, 1853, except electricity. The babies come when they are ready, not when we are. Posted by: Les Kinetic at January 07, 2018 05:18 AM (t/7gr) 702
