I posted this in the earlier thread.
So I went searching to see some of the stuff about Iran's last effort at voicing opposition to their regime in 2009. First thing I found of note was from several months in earlier in February of 2009 where its noted that Obama's team had been talking to Iran and Syria for MONTHS. After being President for less than two weeks, and the media is losing their shit over Trump's team having any contact at all with Russia. http://minx.cc:1080/?post=282200 And then we get to the actual Iranian protests in June. Obama speaks up several days later in a weak statement. http://minx.cc:1080/?post=288565 State department calls the violent government reaction to the protests "debate" http://minx.cc:1080/?post=288654 McCain criticizing Obama weak response on Iran. http://minx.cc:1080/?post=288671 Obama finally giving support to protesters. Again a bit mealy-mouthed. http://minx.cc:1080/?post=288775 Obama administration zeroes out spending on supporting democracy in Iran. Yup he sure is big on them not being an Islamist state. http://ace.mu.nu/archives/288768.php#288768 June 22 and Obama stills has an invite to Iranian diplomats to attend Independence Day celebrations of Hot Dogs and Fireworks. http://minx.cc:1080/?post=288872 June 24 and the invite is rescinded. Not because Obama's team realized how bad it looks, but because no Iranians invited RSVPed. http://minx.cc:1080/?post=288963 Obama/Merkel Press Conference and Merkel has stronger statement against Iran than Obama. http://minx.cc:1080/?post=289038 Posted by: buzzion at December 30, 2017 02:37 PM (cAnNx) 115

"A lot of nations and their populations, no matter how they feel about their governments in particular, do perceive the United States as not really having a moral leg to stand on." Why should we give a flying fuck what the rest of the world thinks? The rest of the world hates us mostly for the following reasons: We're richer than they are. We're one of the few places in the world where a person can get rich by working harder and smarter than others, without having to suck government bureaucrat cock. We can live anywhere we choose within our own borders, up to the limits of our pocketbook, without a residence permit (90% of Europe, I'm looking at you). Our military could crush any other nation on earth if we chose to do so (even after 8 years of Chocolate Fonzie dorking the military in the squeekhole). Virtually every important technological innovation in the last 50 years comes from the US. We have more freedom than any other nation in the world (I don't give a fuck what those various Freedom Indexes say). We're mostly a Christian nation (which is WHY we have more freedom than anywhere in the world). For good or ill, virtually all popular culture in the world comes from the US (to be fair, they might have a point here). They hate us because they are NOT Americans, and because they're too lazy, bigoted and uncivilized to embrace the strengths of the American System and pull themselves up by their own bootstraps. Two years ago this coming January I was at a trade fair in Dubai that had attendees from all over the region including Iranians. Virtually all of them were dressed in western clothes and were quite personable even with us Americans. They were practically begging us to do business with them and we had to keep telling them that it was illegal for us to do so. They weren't angry at us, they were angry at their own government for making that the case. Posted by: JackStraw at December 30, 2017 02:42 PM (/tuJf) 136
Iranians do seem better informed than most citizens of totalitarian regimes. They know the crap their government is prioritizing and they don't want any part of it. And they're protesting. We may get there someday. Well, let's wait a bit longer if we can do this peacefully.

I'm reading an interesting article from Military History on a 19th Russian (actually Chechen) adventurer's attempt to establish a Cossack colony at a port in what is now Djibouti (currently the site of our Camp Lemonnier and the new Chinese port). It was fueled by Slavophile expansion and a feeling of common cultural ground with the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Spoiler: It was a resounding failure. Cossacks, being Cossacks, soon resorted to rapine and slaughter, they pissed off the local tribes and the Europeans, and their colony was shelled by the French. Ashinov was exiled to the Volga River region. Still...perhaps Uncle Palp should give it another go? Posted by: All Hail Eris, She-Wolf of the 'Ettes 'Ettes at December 30, 2017 02:51 PM (qJtVm) 178

Speaking of Harf, the NYT is now pushing a story that the Russia collusion investigation was actually started not by the phony Russia collusion dossier or corrupt agents at the FBI of equally corrupt lawyers at the DOJ but by a drunken conversation between George Papadopolus, the guy Mueller indicted for lying to the FBI, when he had a drunken conversation with an Australian diplomat whom he told the Russians were pushing dirt on Hillary Clinton. Leave aside for a moment this Pop has been described as a low level coffee boy who spent a couple weeks with the campaign, the article was co-written by Mark Mazzetti who was proven to be a collaborator with the Obama administration and specifically Marie Harf to make Obama look good over the bin Laden raid. CNN is now reporting that the protests are strictly over food and gas prices.
Sure thing. Posted by: JackStraw at December 30, 2017 02:12 PM (/tuJf) ======== There are other ways CNN could spin this. From wikipedia's article on the 2009 movement. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iranian_Green_Movement Background to the protests The office of the President in Iran is considered the second powerful position in the country as it is granted significant power. Since 2005, Iran was led by Conservative Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who served as Tehran mayor before being elected as President.[7] Ahmadinejad's name was associated with the profound human rights violations in the country, particularly with the use of violence. The list of these violations included the increased level of death penalty and problems with LGBT rights. So that's the other angle CNN could employ in order to bias coverage in favor of the protestors and against the government. They could say, "The Iranian government are conservative homophobes, just like Trump and his ilk. The average Iranian, being liberal and pro-gay, have been alarmed by the rise of Trump and so the protests against their own government are actually a backlash upon what they see as the oppression and bigotry of the Trump regime". So many ways to spin this. It must make them giddy with the possibilities. Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at December 30, 2017 03:11 PM (/qEW2) 281

A friend of mine working at a medical college tells me his favorite foreign students are from Iran. They absolutely HATE the mullahs, they love the freedoms we take for granted, and they have no desire to return to Iran in its current state.
Don't know what it is about "liberals." From covering up Stalin's deliberate starvation campaigns, to excusing the horrors of the gulag, to whitewashing the brutality of the average Islamic state, there is NO totalitarian horror that doesn't meet with their approval. There's a reason it's called "Tehran-geles".
For different reasons, Iran, like Cuba, is one place poised to explode (in a good way) if they ever manage to shake off their tyrannical, parasitic regimes. One of the world's oldest commercial cultures - and not completely destroyed by the mullahs, by any means. An interesting case. At least for many years, parliamentary votes on economic matters were "real" (i.e., they could go either way, and you didn't know which way they'd go). Foreign policy and obviously predominance of the clerics were off-limits, but a lot of things were not, in terms of open discussion and debate. Odd mix. One of the most, if not THE most, dangerous and criminal global actors (clearly the winner in their weight class) for decades. But at home, by no means a thorough totalitarian system. Some important "gaps". Posted by: Farshimmelt Alte-Kocker, AKA rhomboid at December 30, 2017 03:35 PM (iynDC) 372

Posted by: shibumi at December 30, 2017 03:29 PM (aT+Bx) Getting a patent with meaningful coverage* is not easy. It generally entails multiple go-arounds with the patent examiner, who typically will reject all claims out of hand, and has to be talked into granting some smaller subset of them. Think audit by IRS, with the IRS auditor playing the role of the patent examiner, and you've got the idea. * re "meaningful coverage" I mean something non-trivial. It's easy to get a patent if you narrow the claims to the point of insignificance, e.g., claiming the process X after having eaten a pastrami sandwich on rye and washed it down with root beer. To infringe a claim, you have to meet every limitation of the claim, so you could practice process X after eating a pastrami sandwich but washing it down with Coke, and you do not infringe. That's what I mean by "meaningful coverage." Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at December 30, 2017 03:35 PM (WmqYl) 373

Well, they're right. It is Trump's fault. After Trump's election, people began to believe that it might be all right to actually tell the truth again. To call a spade a spade. To say two and two are four. To bring charges against sexual molesters because they weren't friends with the President any more. To say that allowing people to keep their own money grows the consumer market, and allowing corporations to keep their own money grows the job market. To say that Islamist supremacists are fucked in the head and should be kept out of the country for the good of its citizens. To say that minorities need the same things every other group does: jobs and stable families.
They lied to us for decades and used social pressure like "political correctness" to prevent us from telling simple truths. But the dam has broken. Their way doesn't work, and the only way they can defend it is with lies and violence. We're kicking it old-school because that's worked for millennia and not only can the snowflakes do nothing about it, but nobody is even listening to them any more. I didn't think Trump was going to be much of a President. I thought we'd have to stumble through four years of a blowhard to prevent a venal kleptocrat from becoming President and cementing America's decline. But the salutatory effect Trump has had on the entire world is just amazing. Saudia Arabia, Japan, China, Korea, Israel, and now Iran. Hell, our interests may not align with Putin's Russia but it's clear Putin at least respects Trump. Maybe our future is brighter than I thought. Maybe my kids will live in a free, prosperous America. And maybe we'll learn this time to tell them to go die in a fire when they try to tell us what we can't say or think. Posted by: Viridian at December 30, 2017 03:38 PM (oXqPF) 382

Posted by: Jukin the Deplorable and Profoundly Unserious at December 30, 2017 03:41 PM (3BFzK) Not quite what I meant. The number of claims is irrelevant. Claim structure is typically an inverted pyramid, starting with the broadest claim you think you're entitled to, and concluding with the narrowest claim(s) you think are worth bothering with. In infringement litigation one or more of the claims may be asserted. Broad claims catch more, but may inadvertently read on the prior art, and thereby be invalidated in litigation. Ideally the patent examiner would have caught the relevant prior art, and asserted it against the claim, but they're human, working under time pressure, and sometimes miss things. And each element of that pejorative description can be thoroughly documented, of course. It's not just trash talk - it's almost clinically technical and non-polemical. Posted by: Farshimmelt Alte-Kocker, AKA rhomboid at December 30, 2017 04:08 PM (iynDC) 413
Maxie may be a bit excitable here, but I understand the concern. No one wants to get stuck in another tarbaby war in the Middle East. As long as we can limit it to just covert operations, and whatever material support we can give, great. And there are lots of young secularists there, I wish them the best, but who knows what percent of the people support the regime and its theocratic nuttiness? I've no idea. So even though there are good people there, it could easily turn into a boondoggle if we try to send troops there. I like @132's suggestions.

MAxIE's concern is not understandable, given any actual familiarity with the issue, the US, history, and anything else.
The scope and nature of the internal conflict in Iran, if it becomes acute, is not suitable for conventional US military intervention, for lots of reasons. Obviously. Covert or other support is always an option. And we haven't been in any "tar-baby" wars - this is the essence of the ignorance/misunderstanding he revealed. Our interventions were compelled by events and our own interests, they like all wars involved assessing risks and outcomes, and there's no magic time-line or cost figure to any war. I'm sorry, I can't fault GWB at all regarding Iran. It was Wise King Barky who did everything in his power to prop up this murderous regime. From refusing to back the Green Revolution, to sending pallets upon pallets of unmarked international currencies, to green-lighting the Iranian nuclear program, Barky wanted his extremist Islamic buddies in Iran to rule over the whole of the Middle East.

#432,
I see your point. Just not sure what could have been done. We enjoyed 27 seconds of national unity following the attacks of September 11. After that, it was all, "Bush is Hitler!" b.s. for the next eight years. Democrats who voted in support of the Iraq War simply revised history through their lying MFM mouthpieces, proclaimed Bush a bigot and warmonger, indicted America, slandered every American soldier in harm's way, and mouthed whatever propaganda necessary to bolster America's enemies. We are not one nation. Half of us absolutely HATE the other half, and wish to witness the complete destruction of the "United" States. Posted by: Sam Adams at December 30, 2017 04:51 PM (VDbGO) 436
and btw, those deaths and his general ineptitude during that period gave Iraq to Iran, and us to Obama.

There is a lot I can fault Bush 43 for. "Islam is a religion of peace" for starters, and the open-ended wars our troops were not allowed to win. The restrictive rules of engagement so as not to hurt the Muzzies' feelz predated Obama.
Yes, we had long occupations of Germany and Japan, but that was after we had flattened them and dictated peace terms, and what their new governments should look like. Both Iraq and Afghanistan adopted constitutions which respected sharia law. That should never have been allowed, any more than letting the Nazis have a voice in the Bundestag in 1948. Probably not worth it, as comments discussions get taken in so many different directions, but ......
Wasn't a question of a "3rd war" being "started". Iran has been at war with us since '79 - but that's not even the sense in which I mean it. The war was on in Iraq. Much could have been done that wasn't. Without a "new", or recognized, war. Iran was operating totally covertly, that is to say quite brazenly in a "badly kept secret" sort of way. They were, and would have been, under the same muzzle if we had hit them hard - discreetly - back over the border. But - not the case that nothing was done. Task Force Black was out hunting down "special groups" - Iranian/Pasdaran advisors/operatives - every night. Had some success. But it was a half-measure, and a squandering of the perfect opportunity to ramp up the pressure on Iran even more, and hurt them. And some here might even have had first-hand experience with the fury and frustration resulting from the lack of dramatic escalation following confirmation of Iranian fingerprints on the deadliest IEDs. And it's pretty simplistic and unserious to blame Bush for the nuke program. His administration, as I noted earlier today, ramped up and improved the sanctions regime, and did other things, that were the most effective steps to weaken and isolate Iran since they started the war in '79. A military solution to the nuke program was very uncertain on the practical level, obviously very dicey on the geopolitical level. So a possible path not followed, but not some obvious or easy solution that was simply ignored. So, in summary - yes, the response to Iranian intervention in Iraq was woefully inadequate; no, it wasn't "nothing", not even close; no, doing a lot more would not have meant a new war, either politically or practically; and no, the Bush admin. cannot be reasonably blamed for the Iranian nuke progress simply because the ultimate option of a military strike was not used. But the lights over the reloading bench need fixing, and I am not up to the quixotic task of battling a blizzard of (slightly, sometimes) erroneous premises from every possible angle, so, off I go. I don't see any particular reason that people in the US would hold post 1979 Iran in any light but bad. We've seen far too many "death to America" protests. Perhaps after the current government is toppled, we'll reconsider. After all, their are few people more opposed to socialism than those who escaped it. Perhaps if the nation ever escapes from the rule by religious tyrants, they'll have a certain level of immunity to it for a few decades.

CNN's kafiyya wearing Muslima correspondent should be taken as reporting on the anti-American sentiment of the Islamofascist world, the sharia-seeking Islamic supremacists who she represents. For that I think she can be taken as knowledgeable and a spokesman. CNN should really put her status on a chryon though, labeling her "Islamofascist correspondent/spokes-Muslima."
