In fact they are optimizing for the individual person, who wants their stuff unbroken, rather than for the whole, who would want to conserve supplies overall.
If they were actually optimizing for the whole, they would hold shipments indefinitely until they had the right size space for it, or ship what fits rather than what was ordered. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at December 28, 2017 10:03 PM (2lndx) 50

"20 Canadian aircraft carrier: canoe with sheet of plywood, with uav's to drop snowballs."
The last Canadian aircraft carrier was HMCS Bonaventure, which was decommisioned in the 1960's. Ironically, that was immediately after an expensive refit. It was used with fixed wing jet aircraft, even though it was under-sized for the role. I believe that France is the only country besides the US that curently operates a catapult equipped aircraft carrier (the Chuck de Gaulle). I believe that the phote shows a snow goose rather than a Canada goose, so the symbolism it a bit watered down. Posted by: MichiCanuck at December 28, 2017 10:04 PM (Lk8va) 55

Here's the inherent problem about discussing abortion, the SCOTUS has removed abortion from democratic or representative consideration, they and they alone control the shape and contours of what is and is not permissible.
Abortion is murder, it should be outlawed with few exceptions. But we cannot do that for reasons stated above. So we just argue about something we have no control over. Posted by: Kreplach at December 28, 2017 10:22 PM (5bwcO) 128

Having missed the Star Wars thread from earlier, I wanted to mention that I actually liked the movie overall. I thought Luke Skywalker had a good character arc, and Kylo Ren was fun to watch. It's definitely got some problems, though.
I think the reason it's struggling at the box office is, at most, only partly because of the SJW messaging. I think it has more to do with 1) there's no "the wait is over" hype this time, as there was with The Force Awakens, 2) apart from Luke, neither the characters nor the plot are that memorable, which is really eating into repeat viewings. The SJW stuff is there, but I think people would be overlooking that and continuing to watch if the characters and the plot were better. Kreplach, that's true enough, and it's also a problem. The Founders really missed the mark in Article 3. They didn't envision a judicial tyranny, and didn't write enough checks on it. Marbury doesn't help either. SCOTUS is supreme because they say they are? That should never have been accepted. Rebalancing the judiciary is something that is going to have to be addressed if the Republic is to survive. We have bigger problems right now, and ironically an activist conservative judiciary may be the only way we can solve them, but ultimately we are going to HAVE to rein them in or our descendants are going to be ruled by an oligarchy of nine.

That Amazon blurb is crap. They don't box that way - to take up space in a trailer. They don't have any idea what package is going into which initial trailer to get to UPS/FEDEX/USPS.
There is a yuuge Amazon warehouse near me. They pick, box and load the orders as they come in and, as quickly as possible, load them into either one of their own semi trailers, or directly into a UPS/FEDEX 53 ft trailer (or a USPS trailer). In the case of UPS, as soon as it is full, the trailer is driven to the UPS distribution point on the other side of town where it is unloaded, sorted, and reloaded onto the appropriate UPS trailer to move the packages on down the line. There are dozens of trailers Amazon has loaded every day that are driven over to the UPS facility. We are a mid sized city - but to give you an idea of the volume, UPS handled over 500,000 packages, from our mid sized distribution point alone, two days before Christmas. In retrospect, there was a lot about The Last Jedi that didn't make sense or was annoying, but the only two things that really stuck out at me as I watched were the scene where Leia levitates herself back into the ship--which I could have accepted if they had bothered explaining it at all, but they didn't--and the scene where Rose stopped Finn from his attempt to sacrifice himself and blow up the big gun thing; because "an eye for an eye makes the world go blind." Or something equally stupid.

In fairness to the Founders, I don't think anyone in their generation, at the national, state, or local level, anticipated the possibility that the judiciary could become the most powerful branch of government. The assumption back then was that the federal government's duties would mostly have to do with defense, revenue, and arbitrating disputes between member states, so there was no conception of a Court ruling on the things it now does. It was our great misfortune to get saddled with John Marshall as Chief Justice. It's been my opinion for a while now that our only real recourse with the judiciary is to elect state and local officials who will refuse to comply with their orders. Private individuals should obviously get that into their head, too, but that will only go so far if their elected officials aren't also shielding them. If the actual impotence of the courts could be put on display, that would change a lot. Posted by: T at December 28, 2017 10:48 PM (MmeCn) 217

Posted by: Anna Puma (HQCaR) at December 28, 2017 10:41 PM (Qvpyr) Yup. Or the new rebels using one of their ships to go grab more fuel to bring back, or use the smaller ships to take out the First Order's ships, or simply disperse the fleet to different sectors? Of course, the fact that going through a solid object in hyperspace creates that kind of damage, why didn't the Empire just put big hyperjets on actual moons and destroy rebelling planets that way? It's way easier than building a Death Star or whatever the hell they had in Ep. VII and strategically wiser because you don't put your eggs all in one basket. It's not like they couldn't afford it, after all. Posted by: Long Ago, In A Hat Far, Far Away at December 28, 2017 10:48 PM (itfg0) 218

The fundamental problem is to reign in the courts would take congress restricting the jurisdiction of the inferior courts and the legislative and executive teaming up and telling the SCOTUS to go pound sand or an article V convention and adopting Levin's amendment suggestions. Both of these scenarios are unlikely. Our course set on a slow burn, building pressure and steam till an inevitable explosion. But on our current immigration trajectory, there will not be enough Americans left for even that to occur. We are not voting or governing ourselves out of our predicament. Michael Jordan, MVP of the series, in his first title win (after listening to criticism during the season that he couldn't lead the team to a title) was interviewed and was total class, crediting the team and deflecting talk about himself.

Posted by: logprof at December 28, 2017 11:25 PM Not really, no. Was disappointed. He lost what made Reed for me. From 85 on, he just didn't rock anymore. Lyrics still good, but he mellowed too much. Plus, he started to lose his voice. My humble theory is that while he was fucked up, he rocked. Posted by: The University of Molnar, M. Molnar, prop. at December 28, 2017 11:53 PM (zCyNd) There was already a very similar word in Spanish, too - which is the one that Edison allegedly transformed for "hello". But "hello" was an entirely new word and usage. It was a new situation in which people needed to have a verbal greeting for someone they didn't know and couldn't see - which had not been an issue for any culture up through that point (since nothing like the telephone existed). He was a Bishop in Western NY. He said ( (imagine an Indian accent here) "When i was a pastor in Western NY one of the Congregation members said, "Would you like to come out on the lake in the hut for some ice fishing?" and i agreed. It was not a good experience. I am from Southern India. We do not have ice or ice fishing in Southern India. I did not go ice fishing again." I haven't seen the movie, but I did enjoy hearing some long rants about it. It would seem that everybody is good at everything.
Compare and contrast with any Michael Crichton novel. Where each person is an expert in one area, but only trudges along before and after their one big moment. https://youtu.be/wJelEXaPhJ8 The second act of Star Wars, on the Death Star, is closer to the Crichton end of the spectrum. Luke and Han fumble two steps forward and one step back constantly. Chewbacca can throw people around, but he can't disguise himself as a stormtrooper. Obi-Wan pulls a giant switch, and picks a fight with Vader almost entirely to help them escape. The crew is almost as specialized and awkward as the droids are. When it's *reeeaaaallly cold* out, I LOVE fleece-lined leggings. Nice and toasty. Plenty of colors and patterns!(They're also great under jeans for casual wear and working outside. Better than "long johns" imo.) I buy the cheapo stretchy knit gloves (black) by the dozens of pairs-- they're ambidextrous, so when they wear out or get lost, just grab another one and you're good-- also good for insulation under another pair of gloves, even can wear one pair over another pair... can put a 'heat pack' between them if ya want... WD (long gone to bed), didja know that just today, I received probably my last online ammo shipment evah (long as I live in the PR of Kalifornistan), and ..... it was two lonely little 50-round boxes of .380 - in a box that could have held a case thereof (20 50-round boxes). As if to mock or torment me. But it's "self defense" ammo, and already have some, so 100 rounds is plenty for my purposes. Reasons for "last evah" is new, ridiculous harassment, er, "law" that takes effect next Monday, making online ammo purchases a hassle. And I reload most everything anyway. I caught the eye of a beautiful brunette in a bar, chased her out to the parking lot and asked her to have a cup of coffee. She declined but we chatted for a bit. Told her that I ran the apartments nearby but then like a dumbass I let her go without getting her number. Flew out to Montana the next day and that night my maintenance guy texted me to say that Ashley came to see me and left her number. That... felt really good. We texted during my vacay and had that cup of coffee last night. Felt like we knew each other from a previous life or something. She's incredibly smart, beautiful, and not cray-cray. Yeah, 4WD goes better but it doesn't stop any better.
Posted by: Bandersnatch at December 29, 2017 01:34 AM (fuK7c) Well, it does, until it doesn't. 4WD helps prevent the wheels from locking, individually, because if one is turning, they all have to. So if you brake gently, short of locking the wheels, the 4WD acts sort of like anti-lock, and helps keep you from going sideways. If you jam on the brakes, they all lock, and you skid. I find an automatic is better if you have to rock your vehicle out of a rut in the snow. The old cars with the PNDLR were aces at that. 613 At least WeirdDave didn't link to "Mary Didja Know." (At least, not that I noticed.)
If you read the caroling thread on Christmas Eve, you'd know (from one of the last comments on the thread), that that is the one Christmas song (I refuse to call it a carol) that I despise mightily. It is a complete insult and dismissal of the human being that Mary was. She was a human being, and everything, EVERYTHING, about her must have completely rejected and fearfully embraced the honor/burden that had been placed upon her. It is, to my mind, an extremely important part of the Christmas story that is totally lost in our (rightful) wonder at it all. Christ came for US, and IMO it is important to remember how we, you, me, US, as humans, would have reacted. It's lovely to say that we would love to be selected for great things. It's terrifying to fully contemplate it in the concrete rather than the abstract. Mary had to do both. "Mary Didja know?" Of course she knew. And I imagine it terrified her. That she held true is just as amazing as God sending his son to die for our undeserving asses. Posted by: Weirddave at December 29, 2017 02:05 AM (HtsKA) 630
But "hello" was an entirely new word and usage. It was a new situation in which people needed to have a verbal greeting for someone they didn't know and couldn't see - which had not been an issue for any culture up through that point (since nothing like the telephone existed).
Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair except that the British have been using 'hello' to indicate surprise for much longer than the telephone as in "Hello?!? what's this?" Posted by: Adriane the History Critic ... at December 29, 2017 02:06 AM (AoK0a) 631

That's how I feel about fires, particularly outdoors. When I stare into a fire my thought bubble is "this is a 50,000 year old experience". You can have your iPhone 10 or your Hulu subscription or whatever. It's ephemeral. It's last week's news. You stare into a fire having human thoughts and you're having the thoughts of all of humanity. Posted by: Bandersnatch at December 29, 2017 02:14 AM (fuK7c) 635

Posted by: Adriane the History Critic ... at December 29, 2017 02:06 AM (AoK0a) I never heard that - to go along with Miklos' claim that I had never heard, either. So, you've both forced me to look up the etymology of "hello". It says, blah blah blah ... but with respect to your claim of British use there was this: Hello, formerly an Americanism, is now nearly as common as hullo in Britain (Say who you are; do not just say 'hello' is the warning given in our telephone directories) and the Englishman cannot be expected to give up the right to say hello if he likes it better than his native hullo. [H.W. Fowler, "A Dictionary of Modern English Usage," 1926] Make of it what you will. I will still cite Edison as the inventor and its telephone use as entirely new for an entirely new social dynamic. Perhaps there was something people used to scream through closed doors that might have applied before ... but I've never heard of something along those lines, and that was not to start any sort of conversation but merely to request identification. Eh ... I'm not sold on that. "I hear" and "speaking" are both responses, not entrees. People say "Speaking" only in response to someone else starting the conversation and asking to speak to a specific person. The start is still, "Hello, can I speak to ..." The etymology did reference 14th cent German (shouts to attract attention) and other variants. As a side note, "Ahoy" did take in one place. In Czech today, "Ahoj" (in Czech spelling) can mean hello, but more commonly "cheers/bottoms up!". Interesting. Hello (or hallo) in Hungary means "goodbye". Posted by: the Oxford English Miklos at December 29, 2017 02:37 AM (zCyNd) LOL. That could be the basis of many serious misunderstandings. In Churchill's war memoirs he talks a little about how our "common" language fucked things up. The first effort at allied cooperation was Navy guys meeting up to plan stuff. Someone would say "let's table that". We thought it meant take it off the table and put it over there somewhere to talk about later. They thought it meant let's put it on the table and talk about it now. Hilarity ensued. The start is still, "Hello, can I speak to ..."
I skipped a step: "Hello." "Hello, can I speak to ..." "Speaking." Sure, someone might pick up the phone and say "Joe speaking" but that is very unusual. People don't tend to offer up their identities to an unknown. Now, with everyone having caller-id and phones listing names as they call, a lot of this stuff might change, but I would say that that initial anonymity was the situation for the first 100+ years of the phone. On second thought I can see your point with answering a phone saying "I hear." but I have just never run into anyone who does that, or anything like that. My grandfather used to answer by saying "It's your dime." sometimes. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at December 29, 2017 02:51 AM (8gDQu) 663
Eh ... I'm not sold on that. "I hear" and "speaking" are both responses, not entrees.
Well---almost exactly. The first word uttered to begin a phone conversation is from the recipient of the call. The person who picks up the phone says the first word. Before caller ID " I hear" is pretty logical. What do people say to let the caller know that the phone has been answered? When I was in Israel we ran into a lot of South Africans and all the AMericans had problems understanding them, at first. When they said "just now" (which they used, a lot) they didn't actually mean "just now" ... they meant "pretty much never". It took us a little bit to figure this out. That was also when I learned that the Brits and South Africans said "pissed" for "drunk". Before that I had only ever said "pissed" for "mad". There was a little confusion until this got ironed out, especially since we were all drinking quite a bit at the time (though the Brits drink quite a bit all the time, from what I could gather). Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at December 29, 2017 02:55 AM (8gDQu) 667
There is also the word "halloo", which certainly predates the advent of the telephone. And how long has "hello" been used in face-to-face greetings, anyway? I am kind of skeptical about the Edison story, simply because he was not much involved with the telephone's development.

Etymology Online says "hello" was current in America at least as early 1860, and Davy Crockett used it, among others. So Edison didn't invent the word, but he did advocate that it be adopted as a telephone greeting. And Edison's idea of telephone use was completely at odds with our experience of it. he figured it would only be used for business purposes, and that businesses would have permanently-open lines to other businesses with which they dealt. Edison figured you could dispense with the telephone bell, and just shout "hello!" into the line, assuring people that those on the receiving end could hear it a good 20 feet away from the instrument.
And since the telephone did not develop along those lines, I doubt if Edison's "popularization" of hello had much effect. Probably people were using it already face-to-face, and simply extended it to the phone. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 29, 2017 03:18 AM (d6iST) 712

We saw "All the Money in the World". Don't do that. It's a very not good movie. You can't tell what it's about. You have no idea whose story it is. Things happen and they keep happening for 2 1/2 hours. There is no point. It's edited with quick cuts except there are no chase scenes. It can't even make Rome look pretty, and it takes a lot to not make Rome look pretty. It's a two and a half hour exercise in introspection: why am I here, why did I give these people money, do they have a point, any point at all with which I can agree or argue? Why am I here. This is a very bad not very good movie that's worse because it's not even awful, it's just there. That may have happened on its own. We know that a number of microscopic organisms can survive for extended periods in space. There's even microbes that live on the surface of the International Space Station. There's also the controversial "worm fossils" from that Martian meteor. It's not impossible that life gets pushed from world to world, and system to system by such means. We may find, once we get out, that all life uses the same chemical building blocks, due to this, and environments similar to ours may result in some remarkable cases of convergent evolution. So they're talking basic Panspermia, which is serious, vs actual humans being created by aliens, or life on Earth being created in general by aliens. The latter is standard fare. Linda Molton Howe had the humdinger of this alien stuff all compiled one time. I remember reading it. It's sort of an expansion of Sitchin. Same basic premise, but much more involved. Quite a doozy. Posted by: zombie at December 29, 2017 04:50 AM (42M22) Not quite. The movie was based on the notion that the Gulf Stream would, essentially, disappear first (from melting ice lowering the salinity of the Atlantic, I believe) which is what set off all the dire events. As far as I'm aware, the Gulf Stream is still alive and well. The Day After Tomorrow was a horrible shit show of a movie ... but it had pretty nice effects and Emmy Rossum was cute as hell. Jake Gylenhall or whatever the hell his name is, was the most annoying, stupid retarded douchenozzle of a character. But I did get a kick out of the way the movie tried to portray lefties as being such rugged individualists and having such strong aversions to any sort of collectivism. LOL. That was a real hoot. Posted by: zombie ________ That movie was fun. All disaster films are ludicrous, and all films require a suspension of reality. This one assumed a replay of sorts of the Lake Agassiz disaster and the climate event of 8200 years ago. That's the premise; it doesn't have to be realistic. Heck, "King Ralph" had a silly premise, but once you accept it as the premise you can enjoy a fun movie.
