Quotes of The Day

Quote I

If God exists, he is the reason for all that is. If God exists, then he is life, which means fullness, excitement, and bliss. If God exists, he wants to redeem the world from the evil that destroys. Ulrich L. Lehner

Quote II

“Each new generation born is in effect an invasion of civilization by little barbarians, who must be civilized before it is too late.” Thomas Sowell

Quote III

“If we take down the safety glass. They're not changing their business model. They're not moving. What they will do is purchase firearms. I think that is a worse situation than what we have today." David Oh, City Councilman, Philadelphia, PA

*****

"‘Our entire community is going to be dragged into this mess,’" What community is this? The Somali community of The Twin Cities-Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN.

As I’ve previously noted, the Damond case presents a difficult situation for Minneapolis’ progressive rulers. It’s entirely fair to believe progressive political values rather than the law or concern for the rule of law and equal justice for all will decide the fate of Mohamed Noor. By that measure, the outcome is preordained: Damond’s death will be ruled a tragic accident, and Noor’s actions a reasonable response to her unfortunate actions. After all, it was Damond’s supposed slapping of the police car that would have made any police officer believe he was being ambushed, and he was justified in shooting the first person he saw, even if so doing required him to discharge his weapon, unexpectedly, in the face of another police officer. In short, any startled police officer can reasonably shoot at the first movement he sees in the dark, regardless of safety concerns or objective reality.

It's Christmas you f*cking nitwits. It isn't Winter Celebration.

According a copy of the guidelines obtained by Campus Reform, UMN’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) encouraged its employees “to recognize holidays in ways that are respectful of the diversity of our community,” recommending a series of steps to take.

The Left talks so much about democracy and majority rule. My opinion, the majority of the people would appreciate a wrapped gift this time of year instead of a Happy Winter Celebration greeting.

*****

Of course we want you to die. Your carbon footprint is too much for Mother Nature and you use too much internet.

ON THE LEFT, IT IS ALL HYSTERIA, ALL THE TIME

I have been observing politics for a long time, and have never seen anything like the present moment. The Democrats have dialed the hysteria meter up to 12, and absolutely everything is a crisis. One type of faux crisis is particularly transparent. It is exemplified by the Left’s current fit over net neutrality, a policy that few understand and, I think, fewer still have much reason to care about. But leftists have figured out their messaging, as reflected in this absurd headline in today’s Minneapolis Star Tribune:

*****

Can we be honest about women? A good question posed by no less, a woman.

Attraction Doesn’t Necessarily Exploit a Woman

Speaking of breasts, you can’t pick up a magazine, turn on a website, or watch television without seeing boobs. They’re everywhere. From selfies to profile pics to advertisements—they’re on full display. Why do you think that is? It’s because a man is drawn to a woman’s feminine beauty, and a woman wants to lure him in with her most sexual traits.

*****

Subway restaurants are struggling and not happy.

Subway is staring down at a menu of scary problems that’s way more than a foot long.

The struggling sandwich chain has seen customer traffic plummet a whopping 25 percent over the past five years amid fierce price competition and a slew of scandals that have battered its image, The Post has learned.

In a Nov. 30 memo to franchisees that revealed the stomach-churning drop, Subway’s owners promised $25 million to boost marketing this spring for the company’s 44,000 locations and to bring back a limited-time, $4.99 footlong sandwich promotion.

The ONT's observations? Nearly $10 for a sammich with a teeny-weenie bag of chips and a thimble of soda is way too much. It would also help if the Sammich artists weren't tatted up and body pierced to no end with a shitty and/or condescending attitude.

Like I said, just some observations.

Just because we are a smart military blog, doesn't mean we cover a smart military.

WASHINGTON — In the $600 billion annual Defense Department budgets, the $22 million spent on the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program was almost impossible to find.

Which was how the Pentagon wanted it.

For years, the program investigated reports of unidentified flying objects, according to Defense Department officials, interviews with program participants and records obtained by The New York Times. It was run by a military intelligence official, Luis Elizondo, on the fifth floor of the Pentagon’s C Ring, deep within the building’s maze.

The Worthless and Spineless GOP may not be accomplishing anything of note. However President Trump has been. President Trump bans certain words and terms and of course. The Left is howling mad.

The Trump administration is prohibiting officials at the nation's top public health agency from using a list of seven words or phrases – including "fetus" and "transgender" – in any official documents being prepared for next year's budget.

Policy analysts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta were told of the list of forbidden words at a meeting Thursday with senior CDC officials who oversee the budget, according to an analyst who took part in the 90-minute briefing. The forbidden words are "vulnerable," "entitlement," "diversity," "transgender," "fetus," "evidence-based" and "science-based." ...

"[C]ertain words" in the CDC's budget drafts were being sent back to the agency for correction. Three words that had been flagged in these drafts were "vulnerable," "entitlement" and "diversity."

Once again, F*ck the NFL.

GIANTS FINE CORNERBACK ELI APPLE FOR TWEETING DURING GAME:

Apple was inactive for the game and not in uniform. However, tweeting from the sidelines, or in the immediate aftermath of games, is prohibited by the league.

“I wasn’t confused. It was just a mistake by me,” Apple said Thursday.

Apple hasn’t played in over a month as he’s been inactive for the Giants’ last four games. While the policy against tweeting is a league rule, the Giants fining him takes care of the matter and he won’t be fined by the league as well.

Huh. I thought the NFL couldn’t enforce against inappropriate sideline behavior

Obviously disrespecting the American flag and 50% of the country is not inappropriate.

When your career isn't going anywhere, Why not a tattoo of Hillary Clinton on your arm?

If you're going to date a stripper you have to curb your insecurity or you will end up as a Genius Award Winner

A West Virginia man says he was consumed with jealousy over his girlfriend’s occupation as a stripper, so he decided to solve the problem by torching her place of employment.

Creio Bishop, 21, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with second-degree arson for allegedly setting fire to JB's Gentleman’s Club at 3330 US 60 in Huntington.

According to a statement from the Office of the State Fire Marshal, the blaze ignited just after 3.30am on Wednesday, after which Bishop fled on foot from the scene - but he did not get far.

The ONT guesses the United States of America health care system isn't so bad after all. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Esme Hodge, from Bristol, England, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and spastic diaplegia last year and until recently could only get around with the assistance of a wheelchair.

But in September she traveled to the U.S. for an operation to fix her spine and last Sunday she took her very first steps.

I'm surprised the NHS let her live this long. Doesn't she have an obligation to die and not use up public money?

Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at December 17, 2017 09:39 PM (pZlcw)

5 Okay, well, for those who followed, my Grandmom passed away in her sleep this Sunday morning.

I, my brother, and my wife and son (her only great-grandson) got to speak with her yesterday morning.

She lived a long and blessed life, and did not have to die in a hospital.

Another Moron said that when one's last grandparent dies, his childhood somewhat dies as well.

That is very true.

Never pass up a chance to say "I love you."

The biggest problem with tattoos is that so many of them are just horrifyingly bad, inked by hacks that can't draw for shit. I suspect that this is why those tribals are so popular: pretty much anyone can do them.

My first time recording in a studio on Friday went pretty well.
Finally got results back on written part of most recent certification exam. 100% on every section.
Granted, it was no calculus final, but still...

And **drum roll** Gary thought so highly of Friday's results he wants to record 6 more tunes and cut a cd.

75 someone on the last thread asked how i was. The answer is complex. I have a sick mom, dad trying to care for her and losing his damn mind, his cat is dying and i cant help anything over there just try to help. Meanwhile mom continues to lie to me about just about everything and scream at me on the phone like she is unhinged. Usually the thing shes yelling about is imaginary or entirely wrong.

my health is slowly recovering but i admit i am moving slow and its damn depressing to be 47 and have a stroke recovery on top of everything else with my injuries. i hate my damn life, my cats and horses are my only consolation. Even Grimm is being difficult because hes been so stressed over my health hes not been looking after himself. AUGH.

meanwhile i had a Very Bad thing happen to my electrical, and we are having to fix it. we started on tues, thought we would be done by Thurs, and its is a shitshow of epic proportions. Flooded conduit with live wires and no less than five junction boxes under the area i use as a little turf pasture... all installed by a crazy person. Its going to be fixed but the poor contractor is still here. I shit you not. but hes a good honest man and saved me from a fire or an electrocution this week. this debacle is spendy.

95 Big problem with Subway is that their stores smell bad. Like a hospital kitchen. Not a nice, food-like smell, but the smell of steam and detergent. Every one I have ever been in is like that. Their sammiches are OK, but I have to get beyond the smell to order one. So Subway, for me, is the fast-food vendor of last resort.

Even though I pointed out that it was an unnamed source, no published list of words, no author of said list, and no rationale for the list. Literally someone tweeted that a list of banned words was talked about in a CDC meeting and the WaPo spun it into 1000 words of fascist draconian crap handed down from the "Trump Administration" Now it turns out that it was exactly that. Some middle manager in the CDC discussed not using certain words in the budget request because it might offend the science hating Trump people when they craft the budget. Wasn't Trump, wasn't the HHS secretary, wasn't the CDC director. Just some mid-level career lackey, creates 2 days of fake news outrage fuckery.

You have to read between the lines in that story. These small stores are apparently called "beer delis", and are licensed as restaurants, even though they sell little or no meals. They sell single cans/bottles of beer, and shots of liquor to go, and supposedly also loose cigarettes to minors. One would think if they really were selling smokes to minors, it would be easy to prove, and shut them down for it, but hysterical counciltwats got to hysteriate, I guess.

166 103 29 I don't get why "fetus" should be a banned word. If the CDC needs to discuss the effects of disease on fetuses, what word should they be using?
Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at December 17, 2017 09:47 PM (pvjTE)

/sigh...

Its not banned in the entire CDC... only in budget Documents...

So you use Prenatal Care... or Diseases before Birth... if you want specific funding.

Because calling a Baby a Fetus, dehumanizes it...

Posted by: Don Q. at December 17, 2017 10:09 PM (NgKpN)

++++

Well, first I sigh back at you.

Then I ask you, you have heard of the Zika virus, right? I would think that a disease like that, that infects the fetus, and then causes horrendous birth defects might be something that *should* come up in budgetary documents. I sincerely hope the CDC is making efforts to stop the spread, treat the disease, come up with ways to reduce the effects, etc.

And, fuck no, calling an *unborn* baby a fetus does not dehumanize it. It is a medical term for an unborn baby. Aborting a fetus dehumanizes it, so if you must ban words, ban that one.

Coming up with stupid new phrases to replace perfectly good words is the way of the left. If the CDC wants to budget money to treat the effects of Zika on fetuses, there is no reason they should use some retarded different phrase to take the place of the word fetus.

Have they considered Hospice? My father was almost 98 when he died. He became weak and the doctor suggested Hospice. He qualified based on his advanced age. They help with caring for her. They'll make a few visits a week, then when it becomes apparent that the end is imminent they will come out. With Hospice's help father stayed at home to the end.

The "reasoning" such as it is, is to use the glass ban as a lever to force these stores out of business, since they are viewed as "preying upon" the "disadvantaged" ghetto birds by selling them single instances of beer, liquor, and tobacco. Undoubtedly at a higher per-unit price than WalMart.

And the city cannot simply go and outright shut them down, because they are legally licensed as "delis", and supposedly have food on offer.

Anyone who'd like to receive a PDF to read of it, please send me an email at QDPSJL at the gmail thingy, and I'll be happy to send it out ASAP. Again, I really look forward to everyone's thoughts, particularly if you think my idea and/or script would be worth spending $15 to see the flick in a theater, or even just worth the time to cue it up on Netflix.

Togo's is interesting though. Basically a regional chain that started up in Northern California in about 1970. Supposedly the original owner could only afford a sign out front of his first location that read "To Go," and the name stuck somehow.

i have had three treasured friends i had to learn the hard way with. One died while we were having a fight, went to a horse show and i figured i would go apologize... he was dead before i got there.

My best friend who was slowly dying of breast cancer had a seizure and died driving home from my house. we were mad and didnt hug when she left because i didnt want her to go. I knew she wasnt fit to drive but could not stop her...
and the prodigal. He just drops off and on the radar and last time i didnt get to say it. i know you might think its dumb but fuck man it at at me.
now i am at a point where i just want to get right with everyone i know and feel like each time i see people i love leave my sight i better just be sure, give an extra long hug, and say the fucking words. I LOVE YOU.
hell theres even a list of people i havent spoken to in years i have wanted to do that with. Its dumb. but life became precious when i nearly lost mine again from a dumb lazy mistake this fall.

A lot of these food companies that buy exclusive contracts seem to get into trouble soon after. Not sure of the reason. Spend to much for the contract maybe? I've not seen the numbers.

Last time I went maybe 3 years ago now the Subway had closed and a Starbucks was in it's place but they had a normal cafeteria again.

They really screwed up their overhead menu. I went in there several months ago. It was hard as hell to figure out what was offered. They seem to have designed it to push the meals rather than individual items. And, yes, the interior was institutional.

320 309 I think one problem Subway had was they took over hospital cafeterias. For awhile you could not get regular cafeteria food at VA hospital unless you where a patient.

Yeah ... I had the same experience. No actual menu but just different things flashing across tv screens. It seemed that they didn't even list the basic stuff, really.

A guy after me was trying to order something but he didn't really know what to call it (and the retard at the register had no idea) so they both stood there watching the tv screens waiting for something to come up that he wanted. But it was fast - maybe 5 seconds a screen - so they had to go through several rounds before he could find what he wanted and then they could both catch it on the screen. It was insane.

I used to love McDonald's - and I still like the burgers (though the fries have gone seriously downhill) - but what they are doing to their places is just mind-boggling. And I only found out a little while ago that they don't have any more super-sizes. WTFF??

I used to eat at McDonald's a lot but now, only once in a blue moon. I've switched my fast-food meals mostly over to pizza and cheesesteaks - which is not a bad trade, anyway.

Was going to/will mention to Mark that since he liked Frank's "Guadalcanal" (which is subtitled, as I recall, somewhat boldly but probably fairly as "the definitive history of the battle), he should read Frank's "Downfall". One of the best crushing refutations of the "revisionist" crap regarding the war's end that I've seen. You might find that interesting, too.

Well, if any of you remember my little encounter with the Gypsy con-man and are wondering about the latest:

I haven't seen hide nor hair of them, and so hopefully they did get the hell out of Dodge and will never return. I liked to know if the cops did run that tag number and find anything interesting. Probably wouldn't tell us if they did.

Now, in talking to my parents about what exactly happened, I've learned a few things. Lord, I didn't want to make my poor mother think I was mad at her and scolding her, so I took it easy.

The head man, the one I got into the staring contest with was one hell of a smooth operator. Obviously not his first rodeo.

Get this: my mother said she didn't know him, but thought my father did, and vice versa with my father.

He was skilled at appearing to be some nice, long time no see guy, and you were embarrassed you couldn't remember his name.

My mother swears he called her by her full name when she answered the door. And that he knew my father's name.

I don't know. It's possible he cleverly "phished" that info out of them without them realizing it. He knew my name, and he indeed phished that out of my mother.

"Well, Mrs. X, how are the children?", said with such sincerity and friendless. She corrected him that they have only one son. He then acted like, oh yeah, that's right, now his name is......." She told him, and "Yeah, that's right"

Well, this is getting long for one post. I'll continue later.

423 Saw Star Wars this afternoon, and absolutely loved it. It was a fantastic roller coaster ride, and I'm willing to concede that it may be even better than TESB.

Of course, I pretty much stayed out of the speculation business this time around, so I was not disappointed because my preconceived notions were not met.

I was pretty bitter about RotI because my imagination had run wild between TESB and RotJ. "There is another." " I know. " I call those two sentences the words that launched a thousand stories. I subscribed to the same theory a lot of other people in our little corner of fandom did, and there were a lot of harsh words said afterwards.

But in this case, I was no longer involved and really didn't try to project my expectations into the second movie. As long as Disney lost the damn Ewoks and Jar-Jar Binks, I was happy -- and very pleasantly surprised.

424 Yep, The Dual Monarchy had a navy (though I'm too lazy too look up whether the Dual Monarchy existed in 1866):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Lissa_(1866)

Posted by: logprof at December 17, 2017 10:47 PM (GsAUU)

It was the Austrian Empire from 1804 through 1867; the Dual Monarchy was formed following the Austrian defeat by Prussia in the Seven Weeks War of 1866 (the Hungarians took advantage of Austrian discomfiture to negotiate themselves co-equal status with the Austrians under the Hapsburgs). Italy was allied with Prussia during that war, and lost both the land battle of Custoza and the naval battle at Lissa, but managed to receive Venice as her share of the spoils due to the magnitude of the Prussian victory over the Austrians at the battle of Sadowa/Koniggratz.

In any case, even after that debacle and loss of territory Austria/Austria-Hungary owned a fair stretch of the eastern Adriatic coastline, from Trieste all the way down to Ragusa (modern day Dubrovnik). The navy was based at Trieste, which was handed over to Italy at the end of WWI.

In addition to a considerable submarine force, the Austrians also had a respectable surface fleet, including four dreadnoughts. The sinking of the Szent Istvan (one of the four) as the result of a torpedo hit was filmed, and was very commonly used as stock footage in historical films (even ones depicting completely different events) for years. Still very easy to find on YouTube...the crew running across the hull as she capsized is interesting to see.

435 I am watching Bride of the Ancient Mage, which is currently the most popular anime ... if you don't count those ridiculous shows that have 400 episodes. It has a little of the Miyazaki themes, where everything tends to be on some difficult metric between friend and enemy. This puts these cryptic and powerful characters in the same boat as the audience.

No research required; that was just off the top of my head. The history of the Hapsburgs has always been something of a hobby of mine. Forever bankrupt, most of them not particularly bright, annoyingly pretentious and inbred, at war with France, the Turks and the Protestants (one after the other or sometimes all at once) for almost 700 years, and yet hanging on until 1918 when Woodrow Wilson with his Fourteen Points (as Clemenceau once remarked, God Himself had only ten) tossed them onto the ash heap of history. And Central Europe has been soooo much better off since then...

Vader isn't the star. The crazy universe is the star of the show, and you could have pumped out twenty movies without a Skywalker or even a Jedi. Now, about knowing their names vs. phishing. I've been thinking about this.

I'll be standard operating procedure is to scout for easy targets. Case out joints, etc. It would be possible to go the tax office/county records, etc, and get information that way about a particular location/house you thought would be a potential pigeon.

They go for the elderly, who are vulnerable as hell to this sort of thing. And I wonder how they do that, how they know where some elderly person or couple live.

I wonder if they somehow phish that out of people in the neighborhood.

Anyway, thinking about, I think my showing up was a joker in the deck he wasn't really planning on. But he did try to recover and go with it. With skill. Impressive con-man skill.

My instinct when I think I've fallen into some sort of dangerous situation or such, is to play dumb. I hate to sound like a braggart, but I am really good at that. Maybe the 80 IQ helps or something.

All my life, well since a teenager, my buddies and I would have fun trying to talk like illiterate rednecks, you know for shits and grins. I'd have fun with all the common mispronunciations and malapropisms. Going through life, you hear new ones which strike you as funny and you adopt into your routine.

Great fun has been had by me and friends doing that shit.

I think my instinct to that is natural, but the skill to do it has been learned.

So, when I drove up and saw those characters fucking with the driveway, and this guy I don't know says "Well, hi [publius], hows it been going?", I immediately went into the redneck dummy mode.

Spike Milligan was one of the funniest guys ever. When he and Peter Sellers got together to do the Goon Show on Brit radio in the 1950's, it was some of the finest radio comedy, ever, anywhere. Theater of the absurd, over the air. I remember Peter Sellers doing his impression (in a very authentic accent) of a Paki caught in a cement mixer: "Please to be let out! Please to be let out!"

Asphalt driveway "re-sealing" scam. It happened Friday. I posted about it on Friday night's ONT.

Now, old school cops, such as were around her in my youth, you could easily talk with them about such things. "Now, you shouldn't kill him, but if you do, make sure to drag the body in the house...."

492 Well, time for me to hit the sack. Spent the afternoon in the shop today, and completed a grease job and oil change on my '08 Suburban. Last thing I checked was the lube in the rear axle, and it's very low. Went and looked for my bottle of gear lube. Did not find it. Called my neighbor; young daughter answers. "Can I look in you Dad's shop for a bottle of gear lube? I can buy a new one in the morning to replace it." "Sure." So I drive up the road a quarte-mile, and hunt around the shop. No gear lube to be found. Daughter comes out. "Can you give me ride out across the field over there? My horses got out, and are wandering around out there." So she gets in the other Suburban, and we go bouncing across the frozen stubble; no snow to speak of. I drop her by a little copse of trees in a draw. "Do you want help?" She has a halter in hand. "No. I can catch one, put the halter on her, and the other will follow." Me, "Be sure to take you cellphone, so you can call for help if needed."

So, off I go to the neighbor to the south, who runs oilfield trucks, and will surely have some gear lube in the shop. Nobody there, so I head back. There's the girl's cellphone on the center console, where she left it, so I go back to the house to give it back to her. She comes walking up the drive, no halter in hand, and no horses. "What happened?" "I got the halter on one of them, and then she spooked, and I had to let go of the halter. I'm going to call Dad."

So I drive on to the next neighbor to the north. No gear lube there, either. Go back home. I know I have to have some, maybe even a full pail of it. Root around the garage, and finally stumble over a pail, right by the door, that I walked past 20 times today. Filled a liter bottle from it, twice, and then a bit more, to fill the rear axle. Lowered the hoist down, lubed the two upper ball joints, done deal, as the Sun was setting. Rig is ready to roll anywhere, now. Rear axle will be watched closely; seems to have a pinion seal leak.

537 250 It was the Togo's pastrami reuben I ordered that inspired my question a few weeks back of corned beef vs. pastrami.
Posted by: qdpsteve

Corned beef goes on the plate, w/potato, carrot, cabbage, mustard.

Pastrami is smoked corned beef.
It goes on rye w/mustard.

Love'm both!

They sell single cans/bottles of beer, and shots of liquor to go, and supposedly also loose cigarettes to minors.

549 Enraging story in Politico (of all places) about how Obama and his idiot sidekick Ben Rhodes protected and enabled Hezbollah's South American drug and gun-running operation (which was importing shitloads of cocaine into the U.S. and using the profits to support its anti-American activities around the globe). Obama and Rhodes did this because Obama didn't want any U.S. law enforcement actions against the criminals in Hezbollah to interfere with his shitty nuclear "deal" with the Iranians.

Just un-fucking-believable how many U.S. lives Obama was willing to sacrifice so that his political ambition of empowering the Iranian mullahs could be achieved.

I can't say anything more about what should happen to Obama without getting a visit from the Secret Service, so I'll stop now.

Four more days until the hours of daylight begin increasing again! Traditionally however, that's when the cold begins to kick it up a notch. I'm seeing snow in the forecast for the days after Christmas.

564 I don't like the idea of banning worked but what Trump has done at the CDC is sure to enrage leftist so it must be good. They have made communication impossible by changeling the meaning of words, or having them so loaded with political overtones the can't be used correctly.. Please, add "homophobia" and "community" to the list.
