Ace of Spades Pet Thread

happy-hour-20151208-4.jpg

(I Came. I Sat. I Stayed.)

***

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread, where dogs are happy, cats don't give a sh!t and you're more than welcome to grab a beverage and a snack.

Take a break from Christmas shopping and enjoy the world of pets.

*****

A Little of This. A Little of That.

No word if these folks and squirrel are in Dildo's neighborhood. How does a squirrel become obese?

A college library is no place for a cat and almost the entire world knows about it.

My personal preference? Dogs shouldn't be dressed up. But.......that's an opinion and you know what they say about opinions? Dressed up doggehs.

Only its hair dresser knows. The background on cat colors.

Risking your life for a rabbit? Not my idea of heroism.

Hate snakes? Want to make some extra cash? Head to Florida, they are looking for some snake hunters.

Meet The PetMorons

Winston, the flat-coat retriever, age 1. “Why, yes, I am ready to eat OR play. Or eat. Up for anything really. So...wanna go eat...after we play, I mean?”

Charlotte, the flat-coat retriever, age 1 and a half. “I’d rather not discuss it. Just throw the ball...”

Cooper, age 15: The Cairn in Repose with Violin Case.

Update: our beloved Cooper the Cairn passed on Thursday night after a sudden and rapid decline over the course of the week. The vicissitudes of her age caught her and laid her low. She was my lovely bride’s constant muse, and they were together everywhere, all the time through the years. My youngest, a pretty tough high school football and lacrosse player, hasn’t known a day in his life without Cooper. When my oldest would come home on leave from the Marines, Cooper would sleep in his room with him. They are all resilient people and will certainly be ok. But they currently feel a depth of grief that is a testament to what a loyal earnest companion Cooper was, and her passing has cast a pall over our home.

I understand you can’t possibly post every picture of every wonderful pet that I imagine you receive. Posted or not, thanks for providing me an opportunity to send in a small tribute to all the years we spent with little Cooper.

Best,

MarkW

So sorry to hear of your loss. What a nice looking crew of dogs. Thank you submitting their photos and stories.

Hi!

Here is a pix of our Doberman named Lola staring at a birthday cake (mine not hers!). She is a mature 12 but still has the brain of a 3 year old dog. Just recently at the vets, she taught herself how to open doors with handles! One minute she was in the examining room and the next she was wandering around the back saying hi to the everyone. She is quite the dog. We never had a smarter dog.

Lee

Does she blow out the candles or just eat the cake? Looks like a really nice dog. Appreciate you sending in the photo of her.

This is Bright Eyes One of our horde of 7 and the sister of Bubba who has previously been on the illustrious Petmorons. She was he first of her litter to open her eyes and always stuck her head up to see who was coming in her room. Love the pet thread says a long time lurker. Keep up the great work. - Dr.Kent

Thank you for your support and your submission. Bright eyes? We detect mischief.

This is my pair of standard poodles, Lizzie and Chester, on our way to our lake place. Three year old Lizzie is the chocolate and is like a coiled spring at all times. Five year old Chester is the black and is the calmer of the two. Both lo e running free and chasing anything that moves at the lake!

Love the pet thread! Keep up the good work! - Lurker Joe

Interesting names for a pair of Poodles. They look like they have a blast at the lake? Do they dry off easily with the short hair?

Thanks for your weekly blasts of cuteness for pet lovers. I thought your readers might enjoy this pic of my daughter's cat Lily, who can fit into the tightest spaces. She and her big brother, Bart, are shelter cats who have brought years of love and entertainment to Denise and Nathan ............. and my grandsons Keegan and Brennan.

All my best,

Long time lurker, daily reader. All of you writers are awesome!

Here are pics of our three non-human children.

First up is my beloved Gigi, who passed in 2008 at the very old age (for a border terrier mix) of 16. Best dog we ever had, smart as a whip. I wrote a little obit for her here (https://theuniversalspectator.wordpress.com/2013/09/15/the-comfort-of-a-dog-five-years-later/).

Next up is Dukie, one of three new-born kittens my son rescued under our shed earlier in the same year Gigi passed. Dukie, will turn ten years old next Memorial Day. She was the runt of the litter. She was so loving to me that she helped me over my grief about Gigi. Smart cat. Very, very zen. She sleeps on me every night.

Finally, Sarah. She turns 8 next month. Not the brightest bulb in the dog chandelier but she is a very funny dog. She talks to us when we are about to feed her.

That’s all. AoSHQ is the BEST blog in the blogosphere. My many times daily go-to site. Thanks for everything!

George & Terry

First of all, Thank you from the Management, Staff and Janitors here at the AoSHQ. Secondly, thanks for taking the time out and submitting the photos and stories behind your fur kids.

7 A week ago Thursday our German Shepherd Kasper ( he and his buddy Scout have appeared on the pet thread ) had to have most of his tail removed because of a growth about 5 inches from the base. The biopsy came back last Thursday, Osteosarcoma.

The local vet can't do much more for him. He's ok for now but we are concerned it may move up into his spine. He's 8 years old and expected lifespan for a GSD is about 12. The vet can refer us to UGA and they can treat him but it's a long way and even if they do the average expected extension on his life is less than 12 months.

So I don't know what to do. Sorry to drop this on the pet thread but in this rare case I would value the horde's advice.

14 In my experience, kitty coat color is very much related to personality:

Calico: asshole
Brown tabby: crabby asshole
Gray tabby: asshole
Black: skittish asshole
Tan tabby: purring asshole who is desperate to be stepped on
Chocolate-point siamese: would be an asshole if he weren't so bog-stupid

I haven't got any first-hand research on orange tabby assholes yet. If anyone has a Scottish fold asshole or Singapura asshole they aren't using, I could take them for you. Y'know, for research.

34 Using a jar to defeat Michael Moore squirrel is a good idea. I would've kept trying to feed the m'fer until it keeled over, or got a coronary when I chased it away. Or get an air pistol.

Squirrels are nuisances if you want to hang a birdfeeder, say from a tree branch outside your window. Although there are special squirrel proof birdfeeders you can get.

35 @freaked,

Try golden paste. It's turmeric processed coconut oil with some black pepper to keep it in the system longer. It could give you a bit more time with your pup. There should be recipes online for making it and it's pretty simple.

37 And I will post my happy news on a different post. We took my old springer/golden cross in to have a lump on her back leg and a nasty looking bump on her back removed. They did a biopsy on the nasty bump. It turned out to be an ulcerated skin tag, not cancer. And I had them test the big lump on my old cat's side. That turned out to be a fatty tumor so good news there too. Hope I'll have them both with me awhile longer.

I've heard add hot spices to the bird feeder like cayenne pepper. Birds don't have the taste buds to notice it, but the squirrels do.

He's pretty happy except for the cone he has to wear. I took him out to run around the yard a little while ago and he seems like the same old dog, sans tail.

The growth on his tail never really bothered him. It grew up quickly though and was quite a surprise.

I think there are vegan sects in India who have special strainers over their mouths to make sure they do not inhale insects by mistake, not because it's gross, but because they regard insect life as sacred. It wouldn't surprise me if there were many people in California who have been indoctrinated to the point where they believe that animal life is more sacred than their own, so it would be like a Roman peon who saw the Emperor/"deity" and would sacrifice his life for him.

54 I've got a 6 month old "kitten" (who is pretty grown) that is a constant source of irritation and entertainment.

Well, was disassembling the old TV today to see if it was fixable, and there she was, in the middle of it, climbing over my shoulder to see what was happening. Inside the TV, which probably still has some residual charge in the transformer, etc.

And then, put up the Xmas tree (which I knew was going to be an adventure), and there she was climbing up the tree, discovering everything there was to discover.
So the box the tree is stored in was on the floor, and both cats decided that was the place to take a nap. So they were both in the box, napping.

Cats. Is there anything they can do that isn't fun?

Always remember that a doggie doesn't understand treatment. To him it's just annoyance and/or pain.
Why are you doing this to me???!!!???

So I would think twice before putting a pup through surgeries, radiation, chemo, or such things when there is no rational hope for a long extension of life.

Treasure him and spoil him now.

And great group of fur babies today!

One of our labs has lymphoma. He is on steroids which will buy him some good time. He is eating well, doesn't appear to be in pain and still likes to go play in the pool. It will be devastating when his time comes, especially for my wife. We are inclined to do what we can to give him quality time. Treatment as long as it does not cause him pain and he remains functional and happy.

Never hurts to find out what the treatment might be.

Try to do your best for him, but also let go when the time comes. We can't hold onto them so much, so long that you hurt them. You don't want to corrupt the love and trust between you and your dog, your friend. You'll know when.

107 Today is the first time Prince the rescue poodle has seen snow since we brought him home last summer. I'm sure he's seen it in his ten or so years but we didn't know what to expect. He hopped out in the yard, did his business, then put his nose down and plowed a furrow in the snow trying to eat it. Not sure why, but he was enjoying it. Until he got cold. At that point he executed a smart retreat to the door and the path to his food dish. (Priorities.)

It helps that the snow is shallow since he only clears the ground by about five inches. No idea if he would regard more snow as a challenge or impediment.

120 I see many happy critters in the post.

Not to be a downer - wistful, not sad - repercussions of the dog being gone continue.

Turned over the calendar and there was the note to give him his meds. No more.

We have several cans of dog food. Thought we'd give them as Christmas gifts to our son's two dogs.

His collar hangs on the front porch, I hear the tags jingle in the wind; Milady hears a cat tromp noisily through some leaves; for a moment, we think it's Gimli. But, no.

We're less confident about letting the cats out after dark now, too, without our territorial defender.

Especially after, earlier this week, we saw that big cat down by the brush pile, west of the house. Milady and daughter got a better look at it than I did. They said bobcat, but the glimpse I got it looked almost too big for a bobcat.

We get all kinds of critters here along the river. Don't like that one.

The bobcat saw daughter - eyes locked for a moment - and the cat spooked for the woods. Hope he moved on. I wouldn't put money on the dog winning vs a good-sized wild cat, but I presume the cat would rather fly than fight, and I miss our doggie.

Give your pup a pet for us, dog people.

151 Vendette, I know you were rejoicing when the Stamps lost!

But gah, the Bombers are an annual letdown.

157 We were provledged to have a wonderful flat-coated retriever named Sam. She died a number of years ago and I still miss her very much. A dear soul.

158 Wonderful thread with all of those beautiful pets, past and current.

We just came in from playing ball with our 2 goldens. It was still snowing which excites them so much, even tho there's barely an inch on the ground. One has made a game of pressing a ball into a pile of mulched leaves, then digging it out. Over and over.

Apparently this game is even more fun with snow on top. His brother tried it, but went back to running for the ball. Pets sure make us smile, don't they?

159 Ohh yeah, I don't think I've ever seen one in person. Those breeds seem to be in the category of "It will cost $35k from a breeder. There's a twelve year waiting list. It needs a live-in staff of four or else it will get grumpy and destroy you in subtle ways so you think you're going mad. Its hobby is buying stocks on margin."
Posted by: hogmartin at December 09, 2017 03:22 PM (y87Qq)

They don't cost that much, I've had 2, have one left. Everything else is completely true.

160 We had friends who had a lot of Persian cats.
The friends were nice, the cats were haughty assholes.

161 There is a guy on the springer group with maybe nine springers. He feeds them golden paste every day, to prevent health problems. And the Facebook group has had horse owners using it for tumors on their animals. I've seen pictures posted that see to show tumors getting smaller. I don't think it would hurt in any case to try it. I have problems convincing mine to eat the stuff. I'll have to try smearing it on their special dog food in the morning.

162 Dear Friends,
Toni of New Jersey, owner of Romeo and Rosie and devoted reader of the pet thread, passed into the loving arms of our Redeemer on Friday, December 8 after a long battle with cancer. I met Toni right here on Ace of Spades and we became fast friends, emailing, texting and talking on the phone. Toni was irrepressible, a true Moron, and one of the brightest, most loving spirits I have ever met. She delighted in Ace of Spades HQ and was entertained to no end by the people here.

She is survived by her husband Bob, in whose arms she passed away, and although he is not a computer person, he is much comforted by the kinds things readers here have said, and the prayers they wished for Toni. Her trial is over, and Jesus has welcomed her home. Praise his holy name.

I will post this again on Sunday morning for those who might miss it here.
