11 as far as the little kid destroying the make-up, everyone should be clear - that is what almost ANY young kid (especially young boy) would do if left unsupervised. To them, it just looks like some cool finger paints, why not?

The culprit, as always, is the one who took that kid into the store and then let him run around doing whatever he wants while they ignored him completely.

reminds me of that old question, are people born innately "good" or "bad". As anyone who's ever raised kids (especially boys) knows, no one ever has to teach them how to act "bad". To teach them to do the other takes a hell of a lot of consistent effort applied over years.

Sheer memorization, which I thought they had done away with. She's in Charter school tho, so maybe they don't have to teach the goofy crap methods.

I believe it is legal in Colorado. Riding I-70 is the only way to get over the continental divide on a bike.
I have seen bicycle riders on I-70 in Colorado. There used to be a guy that rode from Denver to Grand Junction (or was it the other way around?) non-stop over the 4th of July weekend.

They say they don't make the state average, but that is mostly because we are down state and they include all the Chicago salaries which now average around $92K (after they went on strike before the 2012 election).

Hard to fire them, they retire early (55) with golden (unfunded) pensions, and continuing ed gets them higher pay regardless of how worthless those classes are. Government unions suck ... especially when they have such a monopoly on something so important.

157 I am not surprised by that school assignment. Most school assignments are a waste of time. That is a perfect example of being busy and learning nothing. My son has friends in both public and private schools, and he feels so bad for his friends at all the time they have to waste doing dumb assignments. They think he isn't learning anything at home because he doesn't have to do 4 hours of homework a night. Jokes on them.

I read an article yesterday about a 9-year old in Peru who had been impregnated by her mother's live-in boyfriend. The girl told cops that the guy had been raping her @ 8 - 10 times a day for months.

I think the reason women/girls are so fascinated with taking selfies-

is that it's perceived as a cheap and easy way for them to add value to themselves as women.

Almost every single selfie is "cute"...so the girl is cute!

And the selfie is spread around via their personal media machine, i.e.. cellphone....so it feels like celebrity!

And then the affirmation of friends, etc also feels like celebrity!

Most guys don't take selfies. I think I might take 2-3 per year, mostly as a kind of joke.

Sheer memorization, which I thought they had done away with. She's in Charter school tho, so maybe they don't have to teach the goofy crap methods.

That's great! I was told that if I wanted my kids to learn their times tables I would have to teach them myself as the teachers didn't have time for that, what with all the important new methods they had to teach.

They were never really taught cursive either (just "introduced" to it) and their signatures prove that.

As a result, sent them to a private Catholic high school which spent the first six weeks of freshman year bringing all students up to par. Best decision I ever made but $$$.

Reading a college chemistry book, I stumbled across a recipe for thermite.

So, I made some and took it over to a friend's house and thought we'd go burn it over on this gravel road several blocks over.

Thermite's hard to light up so I made some "gunpowder" to act as a fuse.

Anywho, I went to go pee and my friend decided that he'd light it up then and there-

on their new picnic table.

Burned straight through. Left huge scorched patch.

Yeah....I wasn't very popular around there for a loooooooooooong time.

When I was growing up, most men saved screws and nails (babyfood jars were good) because even weighing them was too expensive for most and they remembered. My hardware store until recently sold nails, screws, and chain by weight. I really miss that. The stupid plastic packages are very expensive overall.

There is a research group in Munich that specializes in extremely energetic compounds. Their research papers were alway a hoot. I'd want more blast shields, but they went through plenty.

I've done a lot of Schlenk ware and glove box chemistry. I worked with air and water sensitive compounds. Some of them were light sensitive and pyrophoric to boot, so vampire chemistry techniques were needed. Liquid potassium was fun.

The one I ~~respected~~feared the most was t-butyl lithium. Got some stories.

While I admit that not every singer is everyone's cup of tea, Dylan actually has a good voice --for the songs he writes or chooses to sing. He sings with passion and feeling. Or understatement---whatever he's trying to convey in any particular song at any particular moment.
And not only is he a great singer and songwriter, he's an excellent judge of talent and has always played with the best musicians and gets out of them whatever he needs. And he's done a variety of styles--folk, country, gospel, blues, rock--and everything in between---and has put his personal stamp on every one of them.
His latest Bootleg Series ---an overview of his "Born Again" phase when he converted to Christianity (1979/81)--is quite simply, a revelation , no pun intended. This was a phase I largely ignored when it came out , but I'm floored listening to it now.
Again, if YOU don't like him, it doesn't mean he sucks.

My mom is very clean and orderly, not a hoarder, but she too was a child during the Depression and cannot bear to part with things past their expiration date. Even condiments in jars can't last forever in the fridge. When I point to makeup dated from many administrations back she says "It's still good!"

In the back of her mind is always "It could happen again". And it can.

Another missed opportunity is the lack of 'block printing'. Clarity is lost -- probably deliberately. Sad to watch little kids trying to write (mostly boys) and the serifs are all over the place. D'nealian (or whatever it is called) is an abomination.

He went to New York and started playing the folk clubs and got noticed pretty quickly. Folk music was big at the time--there was a market for it--and he had an aggressive and connected manager who quickly got him an audition with CBS records , a record contract and others to cover his songs.
He arrived in NYC in 1961 and was a household name by 1965, so his rise was rapid.

Liked to take a tiny spoonful of powdered iron (wasn't it?), sprinkle it over the flame of the alcohol lamp, watch it sparkle. Did it lots of times, no problem. For me.

I was lying on my bed, older brother was at the desk in front of me, repeatedly creating sparkles. My theory is, he got the little metal spoon too close to the flame, and it was still hot when he stuck it back in the iron filings bottle.

No great boom, but one big, BIG Flash! Over half a century later, if I close my eyes, I can still see the silhouette of my brother, sitting at the desk, surrounded by brighter-than-flashbulbs brilliance.

We lived. Scarred for life? Nah. Just another day in the 1960s.

I have absolutely no interest in folk music, and find Dylan a pretentious twit, but there is a movie, Inside Llewyn Davis, by the Cohen brothers, about that era, that scene. It's a wonderful movie.

I save a lot of old family history, even average stuff my Mom had kept from when I was a kid. One computer is on a little work table that was made from the formica cutout where the sink went in, from about 1956.

But I also buy productive items that might be called prepping. Beer and wine equipment, tools, equipment ... things that I may use now some, but will hold value and can produce things.

Ideally people would think in terms of investing in local production instead of tossing savings in the globalist banks or mutual funds. That money supports Wall Street and foreign countries more than US. Even putting cash in a local small bank can be helpful, but "they" arranged for us to get zero interest on that now.

Exactly. And I'm generally not a fan of "lovable losers" in films... the anti-hero, can-do-no-right type, but this just seems such a perfect marriage to me. A guy with talent, who manages to be a jerk to pretty much everyone, and can't quite figure out why the world isn't showering him with accolades.

Of course, the other great folk music movie is A Mighty Wind. The Christopher Guest, ensemble cast thing, with so many great performances, you can't help but end up loving the music.

I was trying to figure out what she did which got her fired, and I guess there's a need for good healthy boundaries, but honestly, if there weren't OTHER teachers out there boinking their students, I would think she would deserve nothing more than further instruction, some time away from the classroom, to grow up and all that.

312 Two thoughts on destroyed make-up. 1) Why in hell was the sample display sitting down at toddler finger painting height anyway? 2) I dislike it when parents take their kids to adult activities or locations and then do zero supervision. If you can afford high end make-up you should be able to afford a baby-sitter or the drop in day-care at the mall if they still have those. If you ignore your spawn you don't get to claim that you couldn't bring yourself to entrust their care to others.

Remember, that story is written by a "journalist", which means a person with so little interest or aptitude for science that he/she avoided every science course humanly possible to still obtain a j-school degree. I am guessing the teacher was doing a demo of the flame color test for certain ions, conveyed to the Bunsen burner in an alcohol solution, and had an accident with the stock bottle.

317 I did manage to catch the documentary Chasing Trane the other night. It was pretty good IMO but it looked like he ran off the musical rails towards the end of his life.

The latter part of his career was very poorly explained, imo, other than dwelling on Alice being a major part of it. Coltrane was doing a *lot* of acid near the end which goes a long way to explaining how chaotic his musical situation became compared to the relative stability of the classic quartet. Some of the music was extremely inspired while others were like a work in progress, particularly when they'd add some Alice harpsichord crap after the fact.

As a kid, I made my own sodium by electrolyzing molten table salt in a test tube. I could silvery globules of liquid sodium form on the tip of the electrode, and when they got big enough, they would break loose, and bob up to the surface of the melt, and immediately catch fire and burn with the typical sodium-yellow flame. It was nifty.

I still do this, and I think nearly every handy kind of guy does, to some extent. If I need a 3/8-24 NF by 2" hex bolt, the hoarded in the box of 3/8NF bolts costs me nothing. If I have to drive ten miles to the nearest NAPA, it's going to cost me about 4 dollars for gas, and nearly an hour of my time, plus fifty cents for the bolt.
