Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Cold ShoulderHi, I'm back. Sort of. I'll explain the "sort of" in a bit. But first, let me tell you what happened: In the early morning hours of Oct. 12th, I woke up with about 6 guys I didn't know standing around in my bedroom. That was my first indication that something was wrong. Apparently, I had had an epileptic seizure that was so violent, I had succeeded in both breaking AND dislocating my right shoulder. No, I had never been diagnosed with epilepsy before, so this is new. Mrs. Muse had called 911 and the 6 guys standing around were the EMTs and they were trying to determine how best to get me out to the ambulance. My body was in such a contorted position (and just to move was agony) that they finally had to carry me out in a bedsheet. I spent about a week in the hospital where they put my shoulder back into place, and then replaced it with a titanium version. The shoulder, as we all know, is a ball-and-socket joint and as I found out later, I had completely wrekt the ball part of it, so they had to call in a shoulder specialist surgeon from a local sports medicine clinic to do a partial replacement. The X-ray photo makes it look kind of Terminator-ish. My shoulder is frozen pretty badly so I am doing range-of-motion exercises constantly. They say I should get back most of the ROM in 6 months and full ROM in about a year. So, for me, a 2 degree increase in external rotation is great GAINZZZ, brah... This is only the start of a rough road. I am exhausted psychologically and the anti-seizure medication I now must take daily saps my physical strength (a known side effect, which they say will subside in about a month). So, as to why I say I am only "sort of" back, it's going to be awhile before I am back to full blogging strength. I must commend CBD for stepping in on literally no notice and picking up the book and daily rant threads, and I think he's doing a bang-up job with both. I must also ask him to continue subbing for me until I get my strength back, and I don't know when that will be. Many of you have contacted me with prayers and good wishes. I am sorry if I did not get back to you, I tried to answer as many as I could, but I know I missed some. I blame drugs, of which I have had a royal boatload of in the last month. If there's one thing I've learned from this is that if you are in for a long hospital stay, you need a friend or family member to act as your advocate, to ride herd on the hospital to make sure you're getting the best possible care. Hospitals are full of caring, compassionate people, but sometimes things just fall through the cracks, and Mrs. Muse had to loudly insist at one point that I wasn't improving and something needed to be done about it DAMN FAST or there would be hell to pay. This caught the attention of a nurse who took her job seriously and who got me into the good rehab (rather than the 'nursing home' rehab where I would've ended up if she had done nothing). I owe my recovery to her (and my wife). Also, get yourself some voltaren gel, and do so right quickly. You'll thank me later. Voltaren is a topical ointment that contains diclofenac, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), kind of like ibuprofren. It's amazing stuff. I'm convinced it's a gift sent directly to mankind from God to soothe the pains of a sin-ravaged world. It's available OTC in all countries except ours, naturally, where you need a prescription for it. And now I have to lie down again. That's how low my stamina is. It will improve over time, and hopefully I will be myself again soon.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

You know this whole thing is an op when the nano second this turd was
dumped, the usual suspects had prepared statements ready to go and demanding Moore drop out. And here is the bottom line, there is literally no way to get to a finding of facts about this situation. Some women have made accusations. Moore has denied them, even going so far as saying he never met the 14 year old. So unless the women seek to press criminal or civil charges and or Moore inittiates a libel suite against the Post and slander and defamation suits against the women it's a he-said she-said fart that will just hang out there till some new evidence is presented on both sides. And... The GOP is a useless pile of dog shit. I fucking hate that puke McConnel. Posted by: Kreplach at November 10, 2017 09:12 PM (Wtll+) 53

Wow, scary stuff OM -- great to hear that You're Alive!!! ;-)
Funny, most of us probably associate epilepsy with having started in childhood. From some website: "As we get olderthe blood vessels that supply blood to the brain may become narrower and harder, which can affect the flow of blood, and therefore oxygen, to the brain. The most common causes of seizures starting in later life are cerebrovascular, which means changes or damage to the blood vessels around the brain." Thanks as well for all the educational references. A tip on Voltaren gel. It is supplied in tubes in single pack, three pack and five packs. Insurance prescription coverage often treats the multipacks as one item if the prescription is written for "one five pack" and is the same prescription copay as a single tube.

Son of a biscuit OM. That's a big one.
When I did my shoulder I was lucky enough to get away with 6 screws that tented out my skin once the swelling went down (and made my dentist of all people go "ew") They pulled them all out in two following surgeries one month apart. And you need do those PT exercises, and you will bitch and cuss and hurt, but if you don't do them you will never be able to touch the top of your head again. My personal goal once I got the sling off and the pins out was to touch the top of the door frame. My following one was to touch the ceiling. Then it was to touch fingers behind my back. The stiffness and the pain from moving in directions I didn't want to move make me want to cuss and kick things. So feel free, you are not alone. The one using a towel to bring my arm up behind my back, now that one was special. Posted by: Kindltot at November 10, 2017 09:24 PM (X/yv5) 115

re CHARLOTTE, N.C. - An air traffic controller at Charlotte Douglas International Airport was arrested Friday for having a weapon of mass destruction, a source says.
Suspect is Paul Dandan, and he has a mugshot, which makes him look guilty, because mugshot. Article sez that it was Dandan's roommate wot made the explosives and that Dandan didn't come to the aeroport with the explosives. So Paulie didn't make the bomb and he didn't bring the bomb... why's he being arrested? The article is either very badly written or else they are framing the wrong guy. Or both. Is it wrong to schwing a Schadenboner?
A former model and actor is accusing Star Trek icon George Takei of sexual assault in 1981. The accuser, Scott R. Brunton, who was 23 at the time of the alleged incident, claims that Takei took advantage of him when he was most vulnerable. [. . .] The two men went back to the actor's condo for a drink the same night. "We have the drink and he asks if I would like another," Brunton recalls. "And I said sure. So, I have the second one, and then all of a sudden, I begin feeling very disoriented and dizzy, and I thought I was going to pass out. I said I need to sit down and he said sit over here and he had the giant yellow beanbag chair. So I sat down in that and leaned my head back and I must have passed out." "The next thing I remember I was coming to and he had my pants down around my ankles and he was groping my crotch and trying to get my underwear off and feeling me up at the same time, trying to get his hands down my underwear," Brunton says. "I came to and said, 'What are you doing?! ' I said, 'I don't want to do this.' He goes, 'You need to relax. I am just trying to make you comfortable. Get comfortable.' And I said, 'No. I don't want to do this.' And I pushed him off and he said, 'OK, fine.' And I said I am going to go and he said, 'If you feel you must. You're in no condition to drive.' I said, 'I don't care I want to go.' So I managed to get my pants up and compose myself and I was just shocked. I walked out and went to my car until I felt well enough to drive home, and that was that." Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, I'm Dreaming of a White Privilege at November 10, 2017 09:46 PM (Nwg0u) 246

He doesn't find that funny for some reason. Me: "Hey doc, can you make that look like one really big-assed scar for me? Here's a twenty..." I was getting wheeled down to the car when I got discharged from the heart surgery floor. A younger guy also got wheeled on, so we looked at each other, knowing we'd both had some sort of heart problem. There were a few other regular people on the elevator also. I looked at him and axed, "What did you get done?" He answered, "Two stents. How about you?" I said, "Double bypass...rookie." We both laughed heartily. There was a very prim looking older lady standing next to me that turned and gave me the dirtiest look I can recall seeing in a long, long time. Some folks just can't handle hospital humor, I guess. If there's one thing I've learned from this is that if you are in for a
long hosp ital stay, you need a friend or family member to act as your advocate, to ride herd on the hospital to make sure you're getting the best possible care. Hospitals are full of caring, compassionate people, but sometimes things just fall through the cracks, and Mrs. Muse had to loudly insist at one point that I wasn't improving and something needed to be done about it DAMN FAST or there would be hell to pay. ............ ^^^ THIS ^^^^ My wife rode herd on the hospital staff the past 2 times I was in... And I did the same when she had her several cancer surgeries.. You MUST constantly ask questions.. and ask WHY! Ask it to be explained to you in the simplest terms, and what are the alternatives. As someone who found out he had adult-onset epilepsy by way of a 3am seizure during which I permanently damaged my back and bit halfway through my tongue - you have my absolute sympathy and condolences.
Don't worry. The epilepsy, finding the right medications, getting the right doses and minimizing side effects - it sucks. It might even get worse before it gets better. It took me nine months, but it will get better, I promise. When it gets better enough, you'll feel normal again. And it will be all right. Also, you'll have a terminator arm and a story for parties. I have dislocated my right shoulder dozens of times in the last 40 years, OM, but never for the cause that produced yours. Rather than surgery to repair it whose efficacy was dubious based on talks with folks who had undergone it, I gave up playing ice hockey, street hockey and volleyball; my swimming does not involve the crawl, overhand or any other "active" stroke that fully rotates the shoulders. I'm not thrilled by the lost activities, but at my current age I'd likely not be engaged in them anyway. Continued prayers for your recovery, OM. I broke the arm ball where it plugs into the shoulder socket a few years back. I wound up with a titanium plate there.
It took a long time to do rehab. The lack of movement range makes you stiff. I was pretty much out for even basic range movement for months. Your socket area gets shockingly weak over that time span of a few months as well. Even then you couldn't lift weights well after basic movement returned, and you really, really needed weight lifting for return of strength. It took me about a year to get back in a basic way, a couple-three years to get somewhat OK on strength. It was pretty shocking--there are a lot of muscles in the shoulder, all at slightly different angles, and even finding all of them can be troublesome. Wowsers! Long time lurker, infrequent poster here, who can DEFINITELY second your comments about Diclofenac.
Side note about it though, for all those that are taking it in pill form. If you take the pills too long, you see an increased risk in heart attacks. Get the cream if you can, but it truly is as much of a blessing as Spider Robinson's Irish Coffee in Callahan's Place. Posted by: Cantankerous Programmer at November 10, 2017 11:28 PM (3t7n1) 345
Oh, yeah! Voltarin (or its generic equivalent) is amazing stuff. I've used the tablets and the gel, and they both work amazingly well for inflammation-type pain. Back, knees, hips, neck, most any other joint, it will do the job. The tabs take quite up to four hours to reach full effect, but they last for at least half-a-day. For that kind of pain, I think it actually works better than oxycodone.
On the other hand... Voltarin will rip your stomach apart in short order. Never, never take the tabs on an empty stomach, and even if you've had a meal, you will still have problems if you take them for any length of time. The gel works pretty well as a topical, but it's not nearly as effective as the tabs; but you don't have your stomach torn asunder when you use the gel, either. Its one of those NSAID's that is really, really good for its purpose over the short term. Over the long term, be very, very wary of it's side effects. Glad you're getting better OM. I had a first time seizure about 4 years ago -- just out of the blue. They examined me in the hospital for a few days and I had follow ups with the neurologists (UCLA) and they decided it was most likely a one time thing and won't happen again. They said it happens (one time thing) to approx 9% people. I didn't have to take any drugs -- but wasn't allowed to drive for 3 months (the time when you're more likely to have another if you're going to).
Hope you're back soon! Posted by: Alix at November 10, 2017 11:51 PM (iaotW) 351
OM, your comment about an advocate is dead on.
I had a bad time last December with blood clots and pulmonary emboli, Fortunately my wife is an experienced critical care nurse who kept track of everything/everyone during my8 day stay in the hospital. Posted by: PMRich at November 10, 2017 11:56 PM (w5Qj0) 352

so sorry for your troubles; wish I could get my paws on some of that ointment, i was diagnosed with 'frozen shoulder' recently (very limited rom in left arm); for which there is "NO TREATMENT", but thanks for your co-pays, sucka! Been through the shoulder surgery thing. Do your rehab thoroughly and completely. You'll recover though getting there is a pain.
This may not relate but my 90 pound Black Lab started having idiopathic Grand Mal seizures last February. Keppra and Zonisamide had no effect. They got worse and he started having them in clusters. In August alone he had 7 in 40 hours and then 9 in 42 hours. Desperate, we tried CBD oil and they stopped as suddenly as they started. He's been almost 3 months without a seizure and his personality and energy levels have returned to pre-seizure levels. It's anecdotal I know but it is a datum. We've got him on 15 milligrams twice a day. Please contact me if you need any info. Posted by: Six at November 11, 2017 01:19 AM (CSe2n) 356
If there's one thing I've learned from this is that if you are in for a
long hospital stay, you need a friend or family member to act as your advocate, to ride herd on the hospital to make sure you're getting the best possible care. This. Completely this. This may be an immutable law of the world, like death and taxes. Good luck on your rehab, OM. We're missing you. Posted by: GnuBreed at November 11, 2017 01:21 AM (MQ2up) 357
I hope a neurologist has been peeking into your noggin. The sudden onset of epilepsy in adults is often the result of serious underlying problems, whether it be a brain tumor or actual parasitic worms taking up residence in your white matter.

Discovered Voltaren in Germany, it is super awesome. Like walkaround some shithole country all day and your legs and feed are about to fall off but put some Voltaren on and I felt like going for a jog. Great stuff.

"...whether it be a brain tumor or actual parasitic worms taking up residence in your white matter." Or both. Or in my case, a head GSW then hit by lightning. (Note to anyone/everyone: do not stand near me. Anywhere. Bad things happen.)
The seizures will end in maybe 20 years. Or so the doctors tell me. I believe them. They are from the VA and are truly concerned. Yeah. Boatloads of meds. You have to have a sense of humor about it. Posted by: Wishfull at November 11, 2017 08:41 AM (fvJ/7) 361

"shoulder specialist surgeon from a local sports medicine clinic" This is good. Pro tip: if you need a joint replaced or otherwise surgically repaired, insist on a sports medicine person to do the work. They see enough joints to be good at what they do. Wow, I don't know what to say. Such a strange thing to happen. I hope you get well soon. Just take it slow and easy. Thank God you got through it. And you have a loving wife by your side. as far as this, that you said: If there's one thing I've learned from this is that if you are in for a long hospital stay, you need a friend or family member to act as your advocate, to ride herd on the hospital to make sure you're getting the best possible care. Amen. I spent 5 straight months recently, going to the hospital every single day, at least once a day for my dad. He would have died several times if it weren't for myself and my mother, who watched everything like hawks. This is so critical if you have a family member in the hospital for a long stay and something serious. Posted by: artisanal 'ette at November 11, 2017 09:53 AM (fceHP) 366

Omigod, OM, just reading your account made me hurt! I'm just glad you're alive, well, and more than somewhat coherent. You're definitely going on my prayer list.
I haven't read all the comments, so this might have been said already, but be sure you keep doing the physical therapy, no matter how painful it gets. It's more important than you know, and I speak from coming back from knee surgery myself. But it's good to hear from you, bro, and be sure to yell at us as often as you can in the meantime. Lord go with you! Posted by: DynamiteDan at November 11, 2017 03:25 PM (MqzWH) 370
I am glad you are back, even on a limited basis. Hang in there. Have not had shoulder replacement but have had three surgeries on right shoulder, and a frozen left shoulder. I hope they have also figured out the epileptic seizure that caused this.
God Bless. Posted by: Satrose at November 11, 2017 06:23 PM (nycWw) 371
Sorry to hear of your medical woes. Extremely glad to see you back (sort of) to posting. Much thanks for the tip regarding Voltaren Gel. (So far, I've never had a hospital stay. But my Mom has had several prolonged stays and unfortunately will probably be in for more.) May you have a blessed and speedy recovery. Dear OM,
Lurker here. Holy cow. I am very glad you are seeing a neurologist - that's a must after what happened. Keep working that shoulder. The timeline they gave you sounds correct but you will make progress week to week. We wish you a good recovery and smooth sailing. Posted by: Dr Alice at November 11, 2017 09:05 PM (LaT54) 373

I had a seizure also, won't tell my story no one needs to hear it
But, first med was Dilantin, made me so tired I could not do much more than work 8 hours. And sleep the rest They said I'd get used to it, my bride talked to the doc, I'm on carbamazepine now, no side effects God bless and heal you Posted by: DLe at November 12, 2017 07:24 AM (7wdfv) 375

My mom follows your blog & saw this post. Please never feel alone. I had a Grand Mal seizure Oct. 9, 2015. I dislocated & broke BOTH shoulders & arms. My humeral heads also shattered. I just got both replaced with prosthetics like you did. How crazy! I relate to you being tired from typing, etc. Please let me know if you ever need some support, we are two unicorns.
