Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Monday Hateboner: Esquire's Oral History of the Night America Became Great AgainThis is like one of those solid seventh grade boners that strains your cordoroys. Esquire talked to people about their thoughts before, during, and after The Incident. A few choice nuggets follow. Before:During -- but early, when they still thought it was a Hillary lay-up: David Remnick, editor of The New Yorker: I thought about, and actually wrote, an essay about "the first woman president," and the historical background of it all. Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the suffragettes, the relationship with Frederick Douglass...a historical essay, clearly written in a mood of "at long last" and, yes, celebration. The idea was to press “post” on that piece, along with many other pieces by my colleagues at The New Yorker, the instant Clinton's victory was declared on TV. Bret Baier, Fox News chief political anchor: We got the exit polls at 5 p.m. in a big office on the executive floor. Rupert Murdoch and all the staff were there. It looked like we were going to call the race for Hillary Clinton at 10:30 or 11 p.m. Steve Bannon: The exit polls were horrific. It was brutal. I think we were close in Iowa and Ohio and everything else was just brutal. Losing everywhere. Florida, Pennsylvania. I mean, it looked like a landslide. ... Steve Bannon: Jared [Kushner] and I were out on this balcony in Trump Tower. We looked at it on Jared’s iPhone. And the numbers were so bad that we regrouped inside. We look at each other and we go, "This can’t be right. It just can't." And Jared goes, "I got an idea, let's call Drudge." And Drudge says, "The corporate media--they've always been wrong the entire time--these numbers are wrong." Steve Bannon: Drudge snapped us out of it, saying, "You guys are a couple of jamokes. Wait until the second exit polls come out, or later." We called the candidate and told him what the numbers were and what Drudge had said. And then we said, "Hey, ya know, we left it all on the field. Did everything we can do. Let's just see how it turns out." Brian Fallon: I was hearing from my high school principal, people I hadn't spoken to since college. Everybody is conveying thanks for taking on Trump. It was going to be a cathartic experience of him getting his comeuppance after months of representing something that was so egregious in the eyes of so many people. ... Ashley Parker: I walked over to the Hilton for election night. At some point they rolled in a cake that was like...a life-sized, very impressive rendering of Trump's head.During -- The Turn: Reza Aslan, author and religious scholar: I thought, "Oh my God, how terrible are we that it's even this close?" Brian Fallon: As I was walking off the risers [at Javits], Jen Epstein, a Bloomberg reporter, grabbed my arm and said, "Are you guys nervous about Florida?" I gave her some sort of verbal shrug. Right after that I called into the boiler room and asked for a gut check. ...Isn't she supposed to be an independent journalist and wasn't she doing "hits" from alleged news organizations? Why are they instructing her to tell the audience "not to panic"? And then -- dread and despair: Trae Crowder, comedian and author: I felt very mad at liberals, you know, like my team. I was very upset with all of us for a lot of reasons. Rebecca Traister [New York magazine -- ace]: I felt so alone, I knew it was done. I was by myself on the floor. I started to cry. ... Rebecca Traister: I was thinking everything from, "I'm gonna have to rewrite my piece" to, "Can we stay in the U.S.?" I texted my husband, "Tell Rosie to go to bed. I don't want her to watch." ... Neal Brennan [comedian -- ace]: Slowly but surely it dawns on us. And I had said things like, "You know, I've heard that technically Republicans can never win another presidential election." I’m just saying dumb shit, all things I'd read on Politico or fuckin' The Atlantic or whatever. And then slowly but surely it happens. It's like we...it…fucking Hillary lost. ... Evan McMullin [wife-sharing enthusiast-- ace]: I looked at my staffers. In my mind's eye, they were all seated up against this wall. They were disappointed, they were afraid, all of that. I told them that I didn’t want to see any long faces. I told them to buck up. And it had no effect. ... Ana Marie Cox: A Muslim colleague of mine called his mother. She was worried he was going to be the victim of violence at any moment. A colleague who is gay and married was on the phone with her wife saying, "They're not going to take this damn ring away from me." ... Brian Fallon: Eventually there were conversations around the awkwardness. There started to be this pressure to concede even before AP called the race.Anyway, check the piece out. I note those last few quotes -- shouldn't they have learned from that night that valorizing, promoting, and propagating a socially-engineered state of emotional fragility was a bad thing, just like was thought for the 100,000 years of human history before the last five years? Yet they doubled down on emotional fragility. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

As of Monday evening, Silver's ever-shifting prediction model at the website FiveThirtyEight says Clinton currently has a 70 percent chance to beat Trump in Tuesday's election. The lesbo is yelling about how they'll never take her ring away The bint who didn't want her kids to watch The babies who broke down and cried It's a psychotic break. Trump really did break these people. Yes, I recall Scott Adams talking about a persuasion expert he referred to as "Godzilla" (?) consulting with the Clinton team to sow that fear in people. It worked. My 14 year old niece (lives in blue state) had a total breakdown on election night and was screaming about how it is now OK for women to be assaulted on the streets, etc. That *is* nuts, but she didn't learn that from her parents (who are conservative). This was me on Election Day. I was hopeful, but thought it would be very close. Like 2000 election close. I did think Trump had a good chance of winning PA and FL, which would be a winning Republican hand. I also thought OH would go his way. But I had NO idea he would win WI and MI! Those two wins blew me out of the water. It was glorious. I remember staying up late enough to watch Trump come out and make his speech.
The best part was 99% of the news media was in shock, horrified. The masks had completed dropped away and their personal feelings about what just happened were on display. And I laughed and laughed and laughed and changed channels to revel in it. My mom texted me and told me to switch to CBS. My parents were cracking up over the long faces around the desk. OMG. It was one of the best days of my life. I hope I am lucky enough to live a very long life, so that when I hit 110, the press is asking me to recall what it was like when President Trump won the presidency. @109 What led anyone to fear gays or muslims were destined for execution in Trump America?
Makes no sense. ---------------------- Because the Press and the Left (but I repeat myself) constantly talk about how ignorant American hicks are just moments away from slaughtering Muslims in droves because of Islamopobia. It's a constant drumbeat that's brought up again whenever there's another terror attack, and we get "reminded" by the press that we need to be vigilant against backlash attacks against the Islamic community. If you believed the press, then there's a lynching of a follower of Islam at least once a week in the US. You might have a little trouble remembering the details, since you can't quite seem to recall reading or hearing about the actual incidents. But the press assures you that it's constantly going on. What I posted here, the day before the election.
"You still think Trump wins tomorrow?" Yep. Turnout is the key variable. There's no scientific way to model this because the changes from 2012 are too stark, including because we have two candidates with ridiculously high negatives while we had one charismatic candidate the last time. So I worked this by looking at 2012 actuals by cohort and then handicapping where I thought turnout would come out. My assumptions: Black turnout will be down, and closer to where white non-college was in 2012. Trump will get 15%, not 7%. Black men will be reluctant to vote for the White Witch. White non-college will be up in turnout and % for Trump. This by far the largest cohort. And it weights to many battleground states. This is my biggest driver. You don't have to move this one lever very much. White college goes more for Hillary than Obama -- including because of suburban women -- but turnout can't get any higher than in 2012. Many who defect from the R party because Trump is a pussy grabber are mostly in Deep Blue states. My biggest assumption is that Hispanics won't vote for Hillary much differently than they did for Obama. He may even do better than Romney. Hispanics are mostly in Deep Blue states. Cubans in Miami aren't Mexicans. By using 2012 as a baseline I'm accepting a level of fraud for openers, especially in key cities like Philly. The EC favors Trump because smaller states get more weight. He could easily win the EC while being down 2% in the popular vote. Trump's messaging works well in swing states like OH, PA and MI. He's done well to date in FL. Riots in NC will help. Trump has had recent positive momentum in the honest polls. Pundits say that Trump must thread the needle to draw to an inside straight to climb up the insurmountable hill, but it's Hillary who has less room for error. If Trump wins FL and NC and start chilling the champagne. Pop the cork when he wins one more like PA or MI. *** In other posts I called Trump to win with over 300EVs. I worked the Decision Desk that night. It was a way for me to deal with the possibility of 4 more years of Obamanism.
About 9 pm the state I was working on had their website crash, so I asked one of the guys for a link to the FL SOS. Trump had a slight lead. I kept that link open while working the other state, and his lead, though slim, held. About 10 pm I started smiling. I still am. Posted by: ALH at November 06, 2017 01:34 PM (v/pT6) 248
I think part of the problem was that folks didn't realize that 2008 was a change election. They thought Obama was so awesome that people had to vote for him. But change elections usually come after someone is in office for 8 years. People were really tired of the direction of the country and were willing to give Trump a chance. I thought Trump could do it but was so burned by Romney that I wasn't sure.

That was unlikely, as Red states have a structural advantage in the EC. Those f*cking news anchors admitted they had to close the doors and try to write up a story on Trump in the two to four hours when it was becoming obvious he was going to win, too. Zero awareness, zero preparedness.
The best one is that New Yorker one linked in the piece, though. Read it for even more erection-inducing comedy. "An American Tragedy" https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/ an-american-tragedy-2 "The election of Donald Trump to the Presidency is nothing less than a tragedy for the American republic, a tragedy for the Constitution, and a triumph for the forces, at home and abroad, of nativism, authoritarianism, misogyny, and racism. Trump's shocking victory, his ascension to the Presidency, is a sickening event in the history of the United States and liberal democracy. On January 20, 2017, we will bid farewell to the first African-American President-a man of integrity, dignity, and generous spirit..." It goes on like that for a while. Don't miss it. Your betters. I thought he was going to win. I follow this guy, Bill Mitchell on twitter. He's a bit rah-rah Trump, BUT he spoke my language. You can't trust polls, you can however look at poll internals and how campaigns are acting, because they have much better internal polling and get a good idea.
The polls that were being published pre 2016 were violently skewed. I don't know if they did that on purpose to get the "inevitable" thing cemented in everyone's mind, or that they thought they'd get black turnout for Hillary like they did for Faggy Barry, or if they were just stupid, but they were way off. In many cases they were giving Hillary a higher percentage of the voting population as democrat than what turned out for Obama. If one corrected for their fantasy life where all women were democrats and blacks loved Hillary even more than Faggy Barry, then Trump was up. Also, Trump was campaigning behind the blue wall and by the election, Hillary had canceled her fireworks. That morning, there was no line in my deep blue precinct. None. My husband said he was #22 and in the 20 years we've lived here he's usually #90 as he goes at exactly the same minute every election year. Then I started watching the returns and monitoring the NYT app. Being a dork, when watching PA I knew that once Pittsburg and Philly were in and the other votes were all rednecks, there were not enough votes to elect Hillary. I knew he'd won by 7. Called my relatives. They argued. I was right. Oh, and my son (25) 24 at the time, knew he'd win the day he came down the escalator. One of the funniest things was Wolfenblitzen becoming more and more desperate in his remonstrations with John King, who was pretty straight and analytical in his approach, as the PA situation became more clear. King knew his stuff and just kept pointing out that there were "no more votes to be found" in PA where they would be needed, to give PA to Hillz - as they waited for Trump-leaning counties to come in with their final numbers.

Which I think is the problem. These people are not, fundamentally, intelligent. There are many kinds of smart, several kinds of not-smart. The dominant "proressive/liberal/whatever" mindset today reflects a very, very stupid and ignorant take on the world, weaponized by bizarre and often vile instincts and values (authoritarianism, racism, power-madness, baseless resentment, envy). But most ominous of all, the guardrails that were designed to prevent these people from ruining the country - the constitution and the institutions it created - are battered, broken in some places. Only inertia has, I think, prevented pretty thorough collapse by this point. Posted by: rhomboid at November 06, 2017 01:58 PM (QDnY+) 395

I thought Trump would win the popular vote and lose the electoral vote. Posted by: Roc Ingersol at November 06, 2017 01:43 PM (tL/BP) I thought Trump could win and that he had a fair chance. I didn't let in enter into believing in my heart, because Romney busted my heart for a variety of personal things going on in my life. I didn't think my life, career and family as a whole would survey 4 more years of Bama, and I hoped that Romney would do it. Bama's reelection prolly killed my father. I think he just quit. I knew with Trump, though, it wasn't about losing to Hillary gracefully like McStain and Romney, as it would have been with Jeb and Dondi. It was a punchers chances who hated losing. I went to bed early to avoid the stress. I woke up early and turned no the Nets and there was confusion and total misery. I couldn't figure out what had happened. The my wife told me and we rejoiced. Then it was all laid bare....the collusion and the subterfuge could no longer be hidden in behind facades. I wonder if they see the same thing when they watch themselves from that day...if they dare. But after peeking at AoSHQ around 8:30pm (CO time) we put on the news and bathed in the turn of events. However, when Hillary refused to come out, and several states still hadn't certified results I got scared there would be some "found" ballots in FL, PA, and WI that allowed her to squeak out a victory.

--- I agree. People don't want to admit it, but we've got royalty. These folks are connected, influential, etc., and don't have to have any type of ability or knowledge to vomit their opinions out to hundreds of thousands (millions, sometimes) of other even-less-intelligent and less-informed people. It's disturbing, and arguably the main reason the Constitution included the passive defenses of the 2nd Amendment and the common folk being armed. She was losing her azz because of white male voters rejecting her bullshit. They knew they'd lost there so they hoped that they could concentrate elsewhere and raise her vote totals. Now look. Take a close look at this. McMullin, the guy and his people clearly cannot have thought he was going to win. There was zero chance he'd pull greater than single digits. I have to admit when Trump entered the race I thought he might be there to help Hellary by taking out serious competition. First Walker whom I supported by was glad he left because we need him here. Then Cruz who in retrospect couldn't have won. Grudgingly supported Trump because I couldn't stomach the country rewarding a lifetime of graft, corruption, and lies with the presidency. I know, that's a naive POV, but I voted for that douchenozzle from Texas Instruments because Bush the First lied, so there's that.

Funny this topic came up today. I just spent a good part of this weekend going on youtube and watching election night coverage by NBC, ABC, CNN etc..
Hilarious and Glorious. I went onto youtube thinking I spend a few minutes....ended up watching 2-3 hours on Saturday and 2-3 hours on Sunday. Well worth the time. Highly recommend. I could write a million words on observations that I had forgotten about. Besides all the talk show folks not being able to hide their freak out, was the fact that Hillary did not come out to concede. She sent out Podesta with some weak lame speech. And the networks purposely not calling PA for so long, was BullSh%t. Posted by: JoeNYC at November 06, 2017 02:22 PM (MCCiz) 551

But I knew he'd be less bad than Hillary Clinton. I envisioned him a sort of middle left Bill Clinton type, but with less corruption.
Instead, we have gotten the first candidate in my lifetime that has governed to the right of how he campaigned. For a moment there I thought you had written "STAINS your corduroys."
Now I wasn't quite that happy. But when I walked into the master bedroom whistling the opening bars of the Star Spangled Banner, my wife (who had gone to bed when it was still an either-way possibility) realised at once exactly what had happened. What happened to the Left is of their own making, and every single parent among them should IMO be regarded as guilty of child abuse. I feel sorry for their kids, who have been shaped into something probably not of their desiring and definitely not to their benefits. But the adults can fucking suffer. Now give us video of the Hillary meltdown and you would have a nation - nay, the English-speaking world - half full of boners so hard you could drop them from orbit and pierce the earth's crust. Couple of things about the Esquire piece:
1. They really, really believe their own hateful propaganda about Americans. 2.
