Matt Damon's and George Clooney's "Suburbicon" is One of the Biggest Flops In Paramount Pictures' History

The Weinstein Effect?

Or is it just a crap movie?

Probably a little bit of both.

George Clooney's "Suburbicon" didn’t just struggle at the box office. It sank.

The film this weekend became one of Paramount Pictures' worst performing wide-releases ever, and it marked a new box office low for Clooney as a director and for star Matt Damon.

"Suburbicon," which debuted on 2,045 screens, notched one of the most dismal wide-release debuts in recent years. It earned just $2.8 million at the box office, though it cost $25 million for Black Bear Pictures to produce and $10 million for Paramount Pictures to distribute.

...

Critics didn't respond well to the mix, either; its Rotten Tomatoes score is just 26 percent fresh.

It's not just the liberals' beloved Aren't Suburban People Just Trash Racists? genre that seems to be in bad odor with the public. It's also their other beloved genre, Aren't Conservatives Destroying the Earth With Their Cars and Racism?, that's also flopping hugely.

Director Dean Devlin's "Geostorm" opened over the weekend, sans critics reviews, to an anemic $13 million. The film reportedly cost up to $140 million.

The Weekly Planet podcast talks about the catastrophe of "Geostorm."

That's not the only enviroxploitation film that's flopped recently, as Christian Toto notes -- so did the Al Gore Inconvenient Truth sequel and the goofy Mother Earth parody "Mother!" Oh, and he says that there's some environmental nuttery in the Blade Runner sequel too, and that also flopped.

In related don't-want-this news:

Netflix has decided to suspend production of House of Cards' last season as they look into the Spacey matter. Previously they had announced the show would be cancelled after the completion of the sixth season; now that seems up in the air.

Oh, and Andy Dick has been fired from a movie over complaints of recent sexual harassment.

Andy Dick has been dropped from the independent feature film Raising Buchanan following accusations of sexual harassment and misconduct on set.

The Hollywood Reporter was not able to reach any of the alleged victims, however, two sources detailed Dick’s inappropriate behavior, which included groping people's genitals, unwanted kissing/licking and sexual propositions of at least four members of the production. It's unclear if those involved were actors or crew.

In what's looking like a pattern in these cases, he denies the most serious claims while allowing some of the less serious stuff might have happened:

Though the 51-year-old actor denies he groped anyone, he does admit to other inappropriate behavior: "I might have kissed somebody on the cheek to say goodbye and then licked them. That's my thing."

And topless female protesters protest the opening of Roman Polanski exhibit in France, saying that Polanski should be given a Caesar (the French Oscar) for rape. This as another allegation of underage rape is leveled against Polanski.

It's one thing for, say, Get Out to have a bit of a misleading ad campaign. That's was a horror movie and part of the plot was revealing the extent of the Big Bad. That's rather different then we're going to promo this movie like it's some kind of weird murder mystery type thing and, by the way, not even have any black people in the trailers.

Posted by: Ace Tractor Seat Supply at October 31, 2017 03:25 PM (ajiE5)

78 I' e read a ton of reviews of this film.

Even the liberals think it's crap -- that's how bad it is.

The main problem? There's a huge subplot involving Matt Damon -- a cisgender white male conservative -- being ludicrously racist against his new black neighbors (back in the 1950s) -- which it turns out has basically NOTHING to do with the eventual plot of the film. It's obvious the "racism" angle was just thrown it to make white people look evil.

Even worse, in addition to ugly racism and really gross-out violence, there are out-of-the-blue "humorous" lines that are jokey and completely inappropriate and jarring -- totally spoiling any "mood" the movie may have developed.

And in the end (SPOILER, but it deserves to be spoiled), it's all a big red herring, because the lead character (Damon) is --ta da! -- the villain after all.

So: Everyone's unlikeable. Anti-white. Jumble of tones. A "twist" that by now is cliche. A message movie combined with a gore movie combined with a dumb humor movie. Fail.

I just watched a movie starring him last night!

It was called "The Whole Truth," came out in 2016. Decent courtroom drama film.

But the movie had a weird detail. Keanu plays a lawyer defending a kid for murder. The kid's mother is played by some scrawny klnda ugly chick. I thought, "Wow, how did this random not-very-appealing unknown actress get a big role opposite Keanu Reeves?"

Then the credits rolled:

IT WAS FREAKIN' RENEE ZELLWEGER!

Her plastic surgery was so disastrous that I didn't even recognize her, and she went for being completely distinctively cute to being blank-face and not attractive at all. Why did she do it? She removed all her distinguishing charactristics!

It's one thing for, say, Get Out to have a bit of a misleading ad campaign. That's was a horror movie and part of the plot was revealing the extent of the Big Bad. 182 I've heard a lot of good reviews of Blade Runner's sequel, from ppl I generally respect, so I'm inclined to believe its box office struggles are tied to it being a sequel to a movie that's a cult classic, but not a particularly fun one. It's too finicky and fiddly for a lot of people. I personally could never cotton to the original, so I've no interest in the sequel.

The rest, though? Garbage.

When I saw trailers for Geostorm I KNEW it would flop. It has that classic "Big Hollywood production that flops and flops HARD" quality to it, like "The Core" or "Battlefield Earth." I was surprised they were releasing it in the fall, TBH, since this is typically the time for Oscar bait. I guess they're shooting for a Best VFX Oscar?

Nothing makes me happier than seeing Suburbicon fail. What utter gobshite. I've only ever enjoyed one movie that had anything to do with George Clooney: O Brother, Where Art Thou? Everything else has been bland or overly contrived.

I actually think the Coen Brothers could have made it an interesting, dark comic tale if they took the reins. But as soon as Clooney picked it up it was basically doomed to fail.

George, word to the wise: next time the Coen Brothers abandon a script, leave it abandoned. They're better at this than you are.

195 Apparently the writing in Hollywood has just gone, I dunno, not just around the bend but up past it and through the dogleg and back through a tunnel, or something. They keep trying and trying to convince normal people -- you know, the people with the money? customers? -- that what they, the customers, want is old hat or trashy or racist, when we know it's not what we want.

Okay, maybe the directors and writers have shot past the bend. But you'd think the money guys would take a look at the lousy revenue, and call a halt to this sort of thing.

Keanu is actually a very good actor, provided, as you say, he's in the right kind of role. Generally that means a character who's either blue steel levels of determined (Jack in "Speed", John Wick) or frequently baffled (Neo in "The Matrix", Ted in "Bill Ted"). The Matrix actually makes sense as the vehicle that really re-kickstarted his career in the late 90s, since it combines both of those qualities: determination and confusion.

I believe that the only hits are Ocean's movies.

Others were mildly successful, but he's easily one of the most overrated movie stars.

Henry Fonda was a star. America liked him. Same with John Wayne.

Today the number of stars seems much smaller. I'd say that Will Smith may actually be the only genuine movie star (as in, his name alone can help open a movie), but he's had some smaller films recently that have underperformed.

I have a theory that stars are only stars as long as they are used in combination with a genre. Robert Downey Junior can open the shit out of a Marvel movie, but he can't open the little movie about a small town judge.

Devlin's a nice guy - Adam Baldwin and Christian Kane vouch for him as a Hollywood lefty who's polite to conservatives, and his Twitter feed is almost completely apolitical. He made "Leverage" for many years alongside the TV movies of the "The Librarian" novels and the new "The Librarians" series that's a lot of fun.

Also, he operates completely outside of the Hollywood system and isn't affiliated with any studio. He owns his own production company, Electric Entertainment (logo: Ben Franklin's kite), and shoots everything on digital directly into Final Cut Pro X, so every time a scene is completed it's immediately added to the rough cut of the show.

This has nothing to do with his personality or politics.

It doesn't have anything to do with his competence as an actor either.

Constantine takes faith seriously which is refreshing. Though casting Tilda Swinton to play Gabriel is just lazy.

It's like the casting in Only Lovers Left Alive. Okay we need two people who can plausibly play centuries old vampires who are full of ennui but also obsessive love for each other. So Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston okay that's done.

418 Doesn't ol' George have a pretty unimpressive box office record outside of the ensemble Ocean's movies? I guess "O Brother Where Art Thou" got good critical marks, but most of his stuff can charitably termed "mediocre at best".

419 That fact that anyone would cast Andy Dick in anything involving film beyond a mugshot is asking for trouble. The guy has serious alcohol/drug problems with multiple arrests over the years for his behavior.

Clooney and Damon......couldn't happen to a nicer couple.

Haven't seen Bladerunner 2049, but in fairness, the original book was about earth after a nuclear war.

(Most of the surviving population had fled to the off-world colonies, while the men left behind wore lead codpieces to prevent their gonads from being irradiated. And owls were extinct.)

The 1982 movie hinted at this, but never made it explicit. The viewer was left to wonder: Why is L.A. perpetually raining & dreary, instead of warm & sunny? And, why have artificial animals virtually replaced all the real ones?
