Baby Sister Update
Well, hard to beat this: Jessica B and Sue D had Joyce today. They started out with therapeutic horseback riding. WooHoo! As you can imagine, she **loved** it . I thought they'd have several people holding her up, but apparently a simple harness was sufficient. Pic here: http://tinyurl.com/y7dnr8lc I am so stunned and proud. Next, they were off to another adventure (stopping to buy new shorts, first).. Looking forward to **that** report later. Oh! So, Joyce had an MRI on Monday, results next Monday (?). Big League Politics:
"The Obama administration placed Aimen Nabi Mir, former two-time president of the youth wing of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), into the top advisory position to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), a national security post at the Treasury Department. Aimen Mir was the CFIUS Staff Chairperson from 2009 until 2014. During that time. Aimen Mir played a key role in the CFIUS panel's decision to approve the sale of Uranium One to Russia's Rosatom. Mir also played a key role in the Treasury Department's refusal to investigate the UAE's Gulftainer 35-year cargo container terminal lease at Port Canaveral, a critical military infrastructure facility for U.S. naval and space operations. Both decisions severely damaged United States national security." Kicker: this Brotherhood brother hood still works at the White House. This is true in the Midwest too. Many barns are left to decay and are replaced with pole buildings. It is as though the current owners have no appreciation for the Americana they are letting rot. Regarding that last picture, a pizza will break your heart. I was in a relationship with a real hot Tomato Pie. She was a little cheesy, but had a crustiness about her that was satiating. First it was with Pepperoni, but I didn't mind that. Then came a succession of Sausage, Mushroom and Pepper onto the scene. The last straw for me was when that Tomato Pie hooked up with Anchovy.

Out of morbid curiosity I decided to see what the MSM reaction to all the new revelations past couple day about Dems, Fusion, Hillary etc.. would be .so at the gym I flipped to CNN to watch the clown show, There was Wolfie Blitzer first with Dem idiot Blumenthal, blathering about Trump, Russia and collusion. Then another Dem idiot..After that a whole panel of idiots. They were all aflutter, sure that some new revelations about Trump, email and Wikileaks is just like treason or something. This will be the one that breaks him
All the other news about Fusion GPS? Barely mentioned, deemed no big deal, just a diversion by the deplorables, not important who funded them because what matters are the horrible, terrible information the dossier contains Which are all lies but that is not important either. Bottom line is no visible change. Really wondering what it would take to budge these dumb-asses.towards the light. We'll need a much bigger 2x4. Re: gut bacteria and Alzheimer's, I ran across an article today showing a possible link between use of protein pump inhibitors (antacids such as lansoprazole/Prevacid) and Alzheimer's later in life. Even to the point that chronic or extensive use in early childhood might change the gut flora in such a way as to increase occurrence of Alzheimer's later in life. I haven't seen a hypothesis of what the mechanism is though and I don't know how strong the linkage is.

That series was berry berry good to me. ---- It has some big strikes against it. once it's 3-0 Yankees people lose interest for a few game...figure it's over. And games 4/5 were the two most exciting games of the series. It's better in retrospect then it was as it happened. The 2003 series by contrast was tied 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3 which is more exciting. and it has a MUCH better game 7 (6-5 in 11 innings) And game 7 is basically over after two innings (6-0 Sox) Posted by: Buzzsaw90 at October 25, 2017 11:30 PM (vChNs) Posted by: Captain Whitebread at October 25, 2017 11:30 PM (rJUlF) 258

369 Phils playoffs in 1980 were epic. Had forgotten how tough that Astros series was. I remember Pete Rose catching a pop up that squirted out of Bob Boones mitt.
Posted by: RM at October 25, 2017 11:59 PM (eP+dt) --- that play was in the WS vs. the Royals. But in 5 games against the Astros, Four extra-inning games in a row. The second-best winner-take-all game ever played. Every game had a lead change after the sixth inning except Game2, which ended 1-0 in 11 innings. Of the 99 half-innings in the series, the teams were tied in 48, within one run in 36 and within two runs in 12. Just twice did a team open an inning with a three-run lead, and only in one half-inning did a team have a lead as large as four runs. The Phillies in 11 post-season games that year had more big moments than any other team in a post-season. I'll have to list them. 327 My son made the mistake of correcting his 11th grade English teacher, in class, for everyone to see.
She is a vindictive bitch. She made sure that his classes in 12th grade were boring. He dropped out of High School, just before they were bragging about his 1540 SAT score. Not to worry. He has his Master's Degree in Comp Sci and he's doing OK. The plural of Octopus is Octopuses because it is Greek, not Latin. Posted by: JAS at October 25, 2017 11:46 PM (Oj1RP) I corrected my junior English teacher, who insisted that 'weird' was spelled 'wierd' because, as he told me with increasing anger, "i before e except after c". I said "you're an English teacher and you believe these stupid spelling rules?" He went off, damn near throwing a tantrum, and pulled out a dictionary, now fully intent on proving me wrong. Problem was that he couldn't find "wierd" in the dictionary. I said "Now look it up my way." And he found I was right and he was wrong. He was not happy and started yelling "And what are you doing out of your desk anyway Mr. CatchThirtyThr33?!?!?!?!?!?!?" I hated high school and found that particular teacher to be an obnoxious jerk who was in the business for one reason: three months off during the year so he could travel to Europe. Ashley Judd's, you seem well versed in media/advertizing realities and mechanics - has the NFL had to rebate $$$ yet, to networks (or does it go to advertizers?), due to the ratings slump? Posted by: rhomboid at October 25, 2017 11:54 PM (QDnY+) Not yet, and it won't happen until after the regular season. The networks sold XX number of ratings points for the season to their advertisers, and if the NFL games don't hit those benchmarks, then the networks will either have to rebate some of the money or make good on the spots. Probably what will happen is the networks will make good on those ads in the 1st quarter of 2018. Nobody will get hurt because the 1st quarter is absolutely dead in terms of advertising. However, next season will be where the networks will start feeling it since they will be setting their ads based on what this season's ratings were. Lower ratings = Lower dollars. Either the networks will have to add more advertising units per game to make up for the loss which means that the fans will have to sit through even more ads (see NASCAR's slow death) or the networks will lose more and more money on the NFL and will start cutting the fees that they pay the NFL. The NFL doesn't have to rebate anything to the networks because the rights deal probably doesn't have any offset language in it, but you can be damn sure that every Monday, Tuesday and Friday morning that Roger Goodell is on the phone with the head of CBS, NBC, Fox and ESPN getting an earful about it. The networks went with the anthem kneeling because they thought that having that "controversy" will bring eyeballs to the games. While that adage is true for the most part, there are some controversies that do not work, the National Anthem being one. Columbus and Magellan get a lot of credit for proving the world is round, but I don't buy that.
Ancient Greek geometricianisters like Pythagoras proved that the world is round centuries before Jesus was even born. Here's the thing about Columbus. Spain had just recently kicked out the Moors. They still wanted to trade with the Far East, but they no longer had that route to China and India through the Middle East because the Moslems who rule those nations now considered all Spaniards to be apostates. Columbus got an audience with Ferdie and Izzie, and said, basically, "Hey, we know the world is round, so if I sail out to the west long enough, I'll reach India and China, and we'll reopen trade with them". 603 In 2008 Phils postseason, I recall several key plays that were not hitting, but from fielding ( Rollins Utley DP vs. Brewers, Utley fake throw to first then threw home to cut down Upton?)or simply a player outperforming expectations (Blanton home run, Myers walk against CC)
Be interesting to see how these stack up against the key hits. Posted by: RM at October 26, 2017 01:07 AM (eP+dt) --- The BBRef measures after each play. So a foul pop fly rates the same a being thrown out at home attempting an inside-the-park homer. intra-play excitement is not captures. So it is imperfect. Brett Myers 9-pitch walk Vs. Sabbathia (leading to the Victorino slam) was much more exciting than the simple metric would indicate. Posted by: Buzzsaw90 at October 26, 2017 01:13 AM (vChNs) 617

597 Now, the latin name of the Doug-fir (a common tree in parts of the PacNW and Rockies) is Pseudotsuga menzezii (please imagine that those words are italicized). Because David Douglas named the tree after his friend, Archibald Menzies. Now, by what rule does "menzezii" end with two 'i's? (also please excuse misspellings, as I'm really comfortable here and don't feel like looking it up)
Posted by: The Inexplicable Dr. Julius Strangepork at October 26, 2017 01:05 AM (/Ku8v) --------------------------------- The only thing I can think of is that he took the name "Menzies" and latinized it into "menzezius." The Latin genitive (possessive or "of") would be "menzezii." So you'd have the Pseudotsuga of Menzies. Posted by: Margarita DeVille at October 26, 2017 01:14 AM (0jtPF) 620

605 Columbus and Magellan get a lot of credit for proving the world is round, but I don't buy that.
Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler at October 26, 2017 01:08 AM (3YxFh) Yeah I have a vague recollection of once being told in class that they knew the world was round, so the whole "Columbus was brilliant for thinking that!" is pretty much bunk. But that they had underestimated the size of the world. So they would hit Asia at the point he actually hit the West Indies. And of course he's not the first one to "discover" America either, but he did it at the time when the age of exploration was just kicking off so those who try to downplay what he did are a bit silly. story i heard is that Columbus thought (or, at least, tried to convince Isabella) the world was an IMPERFECT sphere, like a pear. So the curvature of the earth where the Greeks measured it, from Aswan/Syene to Alexandria(?), was spheric for that part of the northern hemisphere, but not north of Alexandria.
In which case Asia would then be a closer distance than thought. Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at October 26, 2017 01:21 AM (6FqZa) 630

In the 15th century it was well known that in theory, Asia could be reached by sailing west. What was also known was that this was a 14,000 mile trip, far beyond the range of the ships of the day.
Columbus had a nutty idea that common knowledge was all wrong, and that Asia was only 5,000 miles to the west. That was just within feasible range. Lucky for him, there happened to be a continental land mass about 5,000 to the west. Only, it wasn't Asia. And the rest, as they say, is history. Bacon and his set, around Shakespeare's time, were tarting English up for use in scientific treatises. It took a while; it was still pretty common in the 1800's for important new stuff to be published in Latin. They had to import a lot of root words, and methods of rendering Latin changes. Sure the Norman French bastardization is the root of the whole thing, and that gets you nicely into the various ways and times Latin found its way in. What I think is so distinctively un-interesting and drab about Bacon's scientism is that it was cold-blooded, deliberate, and done in the light of day, not by gradual backstreet means like most English advances.

Posted by: yankeefifth at October 26, 2017 12:32 AM (vuY5x) I was absolutely respectful even though I knew then the dude was an asshole. 605 Columbus and Magellan get a lot of credit for proving the world is round, but I don't buy that.
Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler at October 26, 2017 01:08 AM (3YxFh) There was too much proof that the world is round for Columbus and Magellan to be the first to prove it. Notice that the vessels with tall sailing masts, when they put out to see, finally fade beyond the horizon when the top of the mast disappears from view. Eclipses are another indication. Even the ancients could figure out that during a lunar eclipse the moon disappeared into the Earth's shadow - which of course is curved. Finally, Eratosthenes figured out the world's circumference well before the birth of Christ, and it was not a secret that on June 21, some obelisks and vertical structures cast no shadows while others further north did on the same day. Many people in ancient times knew about the shadow trick, but Eratosthenes went one better than any of them - he knew it was about 800 miles (although he used "stadia" for distance) from Alexandria, where he was at the time, to the city in southern Egypt with the obelisk that cast no shadow. He took the ratio of the length of his shadow in Alexandria to the height of the obelisk casting the shadow, applied that ratio to the 800 mile distance between the two cities, was able to approximate the curvature of the earth and thus calculate the actual circumference of the earth, within about 10% of what we have now measured.
