Former NPR CEO Ventures Out of the Liberal Media Bubble In Search of Actual Americans; Finds Out They're... Normal and Non-Threatening

H/t to Newsbusters for pointing this out and digesting it.

The liberal-turned-right-curious NPR exec writes about his journeys into America and his new book about it at the NY Post.

Most reporters and editors are liberal -- a now-dated Pew Research Center poll found that liberals outnumber conservatives in the media by some 5 to 1, and that comports with my own anecdotal experience at National Public Radio. When you are liberal, and everyone else around you is as well, it is easy to fall into groupthink on what stories are important, what sources are legitimate and what the narrative of the day will be.

This may seem like an unusual admission from someone who once ran NPR, but it is borne of recent experience. Spurred by a fear that red and blue America were drifting irrevocably apart, I decided to venture out from my overwhelmingly Democratic neighborhood and engage Republicans where they live, work and pray. For an entire year, I embedded myself with the other side, standing in pit row at a NASCAR race, hanging out at Tea Party meetings and sitting in on Steve Bannon's radio show. I found an America far different from the one depicted in the press and imagined by presidents ("cling to guns or religion") and presidential candidates ("basket of deplorables") alike.

I spent many Sundays in evangelical churches and hung out with 15,000 evangelical youth at the Urbana conference. I wasn't sure what to expect among thousands of college-age evangelicals, but I certainly didn't expect the intense discussion of racial equity and refugee issues -- how to help them, not how to keep them out -- but that is what I got.

He never even held a gun before, but he picked one up for a pig hunt:

In the afternoon, with the Georgians heading home, I linked up with a group of friends from Houston who belied the demographic stereotyping of the hunt; collectively we were the equivalent of a bad bar joke: a Hispanic ex-soldier, a young black family man, a Serbian immigrant and a Jew from DC.

None of my new hunting partners fit the lazy caricature of the angry NRA member. Rather, they saw guns as both a shared sport and as a necessary means to protect their families during uncertain times.

...

Over the course of this past year, I have tried to consume media as they do and understand it as a partisan player. It is not so hard to do. Take guns. Gun control and gun rights is one of our most divisive issues, and there are legitimate points on both sides. But media is obsessed with the gun-control side and gives only scant, mostly negative, recognition to the gun-rights sides.

He even talks about defensive gun use and the profound underreporting of them by the media.

In the end, he has to turn to talking about how terribly dangerous it is for our republic to have the president call out media, which the author himself says is hopelessly biased, for its hopeless bias.

The Guild protects his own. And an ego will protect itself at all costs.

That said, he then turns to the media:

At the same time, the media should acknowledge its own failings in reflecting only their part of America. You can't cover America from the Acela corridor, and the media need to get out and be part of the conversations that take place in churches and community centers and town halls.

Worth reading. I left a lot back at the link.

He appeared on Morning Joe to discuss his conversion. The Free Beacon has a video clip. He has not yet alleged a sexual assault by Mark Halperin.

1 In the end, not surprisingly, he didn't have the courage of his convictions.

Lecturing the media to play fair is going to change exactly nothing.

Not impressed with this latest liberal safari.

5 A big failing of that article is that to connect with conservatives, he went to a lot of conservative political stuff... I think one big difference between liberals and conservatives is that conservatives care a lot less about politics, period, it isn't central to our lives. Don't go to Tea Party rallies to understand conservatives, meet us in our homes, our jobs, and our churches.

JJ I think the Commissar Order is apart from the Holocaust crimes committed in Poland and the occupied USSR - the Einsatzgruppen/Sonderkommando operated mostly behind the lines, had their own orders. Commissar Order was primarily for Wehrmacht attention, and I think most murders of those people were done at/near the front.

But your main point stands - most of the enormous, unthinkable evil was actually conducted on the basis of very discreet verbal orders - in a context of mass consent/support/enthusiasm, of course. Himmler briefed the gauleiters in 1943 - they of course suspected but didn't mostly know for sure - about the highlights of the Reich's depravities in the east, precisely to "motivate" them by letting them know what they were now part of .... no way back or our except victory. He wouldn't have done it if official, detailed knowledge of these things were already widespread.

But sure ... a little "they are not as deplorable as we thought" is useful.
But the rest of us know we are at war with globalists that would destroy us.

109 NPR had another guy, I want to say his name was Kevin Phillips, back in '92 when the dread conservatives first showed up out of the mist. They were offering bus tours into Virginia for belt-loopers who'd never seen one. This guy became their token, if not actual conservative, but well, guide and interpreter. And he had a regular radio feature for a while, until things shaped up and they were able to use him just to mock and attack.

Appears to be a cyclical thing with NPR. They will most def pretend you don't exist for a decade or two, and then cash in on the re-education program.

Omgawd. Zuckerberg actually said something smart and self-aware. I'm in shock.

These guys who 'venture' into flyover country act like they are going on safari & will need to defend themselves against wildebeests. Or they are going to visit Area 51 & aliens. The media has again created this divison; misrepresenting reality. It was better when there was print media and local papers. Then you had a more accurate reflection of people & places.

172 But it is now clear that during the last
Administration, the IRS began using inappropriate criteria to screen
applications for 501(c) status. These criteria included names such as " Tea Party," "Patriots," or "9/12" or policy positions concerning
government spending or taxes, education of the public to "make America a
better place to live," or statements criticizing how the country was
being run. It is also clear these criteria disproportionately impacted
conservative groups.

205 I saw that article earlier this week, I thought it was a good article right up until he started talking about Trump attacking the media then he lost all credibility. Trump does not attack the media, he counter-attacks the media and the difference is important.
Somehow, the media has determined that they can attack without restraint while their opponents are restrained in their ability to respond. No doubt Bush had a lot to do with that. Maybe McCain and Romney deserve assists on the play.
But when the media toss away integrity and even the semblance of impartiality, they deserve no attention, no restraint and no deference. Where is the danger in attacking a media that does not tell the truth, or give equal credence to both sides of a story? The general public is turning to other sources already, or do they not notice their circulations and ratings plummeting.

And they have no idea what the rest of the world is like. As you say, they are cut off and know only what the government tells them. I remember reading an article a few years ago by a young lady who was American/Korean (South) and was allowed to go over as a teacher for a year as part of a church group. She taught in an exclusive school for the sons of the government higher-ups. She was amazed at what they didn't know.

They had never heard of the Eiffel Tower. They had been told that all countries spoke Korean as their first language. It went on and on.

The small town I live outside of is considering voting in a "non discrimination policy" that covers all the things the federal and state non discrimination policies don't cover. Which is gender identity for the most part.

I just read a news article about the city meeting in which the public was invited to comment. The only commenters quoted are the following.
A lesbian who claims she is terrified to be outed in this small town because of what the climate is in the USA today.( I guess gays are being hunted down and shot in the street regularly in the US today) A father who was appalled that a float for a homecoming parade was deemed "racist' by a car of taunting teens from another town and that town's paper picked the story up and talked about how racist this small town is. He thinks having the city government decree what one can think or determine who they must associate with or employ will show those meanies that the small town isn't racist. On and on.

This ties in with not only this story, but the earlier thread today about how the left coasts and SJW's hate flyover country. Well , I've got news for you all. They are arriving in your small towns and flyover areas and they are on a mission to turn it into their leftist utopia.

263 Well, husband is in ATL to attend a meeting tomorrow and check on his mother and aunt.

Meanwhile, I'm left to hobble around on a broken foot. Went to Kroger this afternoon and it was a nightmare.

They were having a Halloween party in the store for all the kiddies. Cookie decorating in the bakery, and games and a scavenger hunt all over the store.

I literally had to dodge a large rolling pumpkin in one aisle, from some game they were playing.

It was like running a gauntlet trying to pick up a few groceries without getting run down by little screaming kids running amok. Yeesh.

What about the gaming commission? Don't all casino employees have to be okayed by the gaming commission - or, at least, have to have paperwork filled out and waiting approval (if the movie Casino is to be believed)?

Getting a job at a casino in Vegas - any job - generally involves more paperwork than most other jobs, I think.

Read up on all the illegal acts illegals commit to get in and stay in this country. That's why they all need to be deported as they've all most likely committed crimes to stay here.

identity theft is among the most common and it damages other people severely but nothing is done because the SS won't issue complaints. duplicate SSN's all over the place. People getting ripped off or having their identity stolen.

Actually Peaches I don't think those CA driver's licenses for illegals can get you through a border crossing/passport control.

Which reminds me to repeat - wonder if DOJ and DHS have looked into attempting to restore some of the integrity of US official documents (in the face of CA and other lawlessness) by ensuring that such illegal IDs are *not* accepted as ID for TSA or other travel-related purposes? Seems kinda like an obvious thing to do, no?

Unless that's already the case - though I haven't heard that it is.

So ... police departments hold big press conferences about these cases ... and then just refuse to give any general information about regular procedures ...

The sheriff states constantly at all his pressers that they will only be giving information at the pressers and through distribution of information.

There is noting routine about what is going on in Vegas right now and I am sure they are getting dumbass phone calls from news organizations around the world constantly. We should start letting all the territories and protectorates go from the Spanish American war. Isn't it about time?

Let them fend for themselves. They're all mostly money sinks anyway. Because they have Uncle Sugar they never learn sound fiscal policy or get off the federal teet.

PR is a prime example. It's why they're of two minds about becoming independent and the votes always split.

It's become so common for the press to withhold certain facts that you get in the habit of filling them in. If a politician is in a scandal and the party is not identified in the headline or 1st paragraph, you know it is a Democrat, and so on. I'd bet most people are assuming that Campos is an illegal based on the lack of details provided about him (same goes for the security license).
It may not be accurate, but the MSM has trained us to assume inconvenient details when certain details are omitted in their stories.

>He's an ILLEGAL. He has no papers, no way of vetting him and his criminal record. No references that can be checked.

>That's why they told him to get out of town. Sure he's got papers NOW. That's what the delay was all about. Back dating his green card app and other assorted stuff.

That sounds a bit like a conspiracy to me.

I really don't think under this president with this INS and this AG you are going to see fake papers or a forged green card app.

So again, if he had issues like this, why would he come back? Be a hell of lot easier to hide in Mexico and a lot harder to arrest.

I walked home to eat lunch too.

The sort of women who were snitch moms are now snitch college students and snitch employees. Better when those nosy parkers were calling other moms to tell them they saw Johnny sneaking a smoke or playing hooky, rather than snitching on someone who expresses an un-PC thought at work.

and 210,000 illegals, putting it right at 20%. If you got better or

No. That you are a retard who can't do basic math.

210,000 is (right at) 20% of 790,000?

492 >>How do they count the illegals, exactly?

Per Ann Coulter's "Adios America" they use Census figures, which assumes illegals are comfortable sharing their status with Census takers/on surveys.

For her book she used 2006 analysis by two Bear Stearns financial analysts to estimate that the number of illegals is at least 30 million.

THIS ^^^^^^^

I've worked where illegals are rampant. There are far more here than the officials want to admit.

This isn't guesswork nor moving any goalposts. It's just the reality.

Our borders are so open that we now have only a rough estimate of who is here legally and we don't even keep track of those.

And they have no problem getting to vote. I assure you no one in certain states is bothered by it or bothers to enforce the law. They LIKE is that way.

We have already started down the path where by we no longer are a sovereign state. Only the next 3 possibly 7 years will tell the tale if that course is reversed. cite all the statistics you want. THEY DON'T REALLY KNOW WHO'S HERE!!!!!

Your figures are meaningless because of the failure to stop them at the border to note when they don't return if they used a visa.

MEANINGLESS. Cite them all you want they are NOT accurate.

498 Not to step into this Jets v Sharks rumble, but one of the interesting things about illegal aliens is that we might not have accurate numbers as far as how many there are... here illegally.

Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at October 26, 2017 09:56 PM (rb1zT)

One thing we do know is that any number that leftists and Vichy Republicans are willing to admit to is certainly no more than 1/2 the true number and is very likely more around 1/3 or 1/4 the real number.

When Reagan was bamboozled into giving aid and comfort to the illegals, they claimed that there were no more than 375,000 (I believe) that would get citizenship. WHen all was said and done the number granted citizenship under that farce was around 3 million, I think.
