Mora ladies.jpg

Spanish Color Fantasy
F. Louis Mora

Or my Bing-fu is such that I simply couldn't find a title*, but it's an interesting piece which has nothing to do with any possibility of a Fashion Thread appearing on these august pages anytime soon...

I find the woman on the right intriguing because of the subtlety of her right hand. That tells me that the artist spent some time observing his subjects.

Vic yesterday you were doubting that a wide spread months long failure
of the electrical grid would kill 90% of the people in the country.

Water
into people's homes is ultimately pumped by electricity - when the
water tanks run dry - the supply of water to homes ceases. That means no
baths, flush toilets or water for drinking, cooking, washing dishes, or
clothes. Electricity also powers sewage treatment facilities. Sure you
can dig an outhouse in your yard, but where are you going to get the
quick lime to kill the bacteria? The vast majority of people in big
cities would die under those conditions. The lack of sanitation would
spread cholera like wild fire.

Cities in the 1800's were much
smaller than they are today - it is electricity which makes the size of
modern cities possible. Take away electricity and cities have to shrink
back to the size they were in the pre-electricity 1800's. With no
electricity to operate pumps at filling stations how do you fuel your
car to leave a big city? How do you fuel the trucks to resupply grocery
stores? Long term power loss is catastrophic.

There are reasons
that the very first military operation that the US takes in war is to
knock out the power in a country. Had we knocked out all of Germany's
electrical power in WWII the war would have ended shortly afterwards.

Posted by: Clearly at October 16, 2017 09:28 AM (3FTc9)

Most municipality water systems are pressurized by water towers. True those towers have to be filled by wells of some other type of pump but they have back up generators for that.

What will endanger the large cities the most is the supermarket shelves will be stripped bare within hours of any major calamity. The savages will revert to cannibalism.

But remember also what I said yesterday, South FL was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew and fatalities were low. And mostly that was due to homes being knocked off their foundations by the hurricane surge.

And the power failure would not be months long as the doomsayers are spouting. The Army even says they have no idea what the impact of the so-called Nork EMP attack would be. It is all speculation and probably BS,.

47 I'm not familiar with Mora but intend to learn more about him. This painting is intriguing in the poses and details (like the hand, as you noted) as well as the colors and how they blend. Not sure how to classify his style or if I should even try. This is another example of art that could be used as commercial illustration.

I can say this is a delightful and pleasant painting. You can hear the song "I Enjoy Being A Girl" from Flower Drum Song playing in the background.

Mora also worked in watercolors and pen and ink. I have to look for examples to see if those media change his approach from oils.

Posted by: JTB at October 16, 2017 09:44 AM (V+03K)

48 Hmmm. Turns out this guy was quite versatile in artistic media. I admire a good watercolorist. He painted the official portrait of Pres. Harding and did a series memorializing French casualties during WWI.

51 Insty linked to an article at the HuffPo from some big lib warning the faithful that there is a method to Trump's moron ways.

Comments are filled with prayers to Comey to save them; for impeachment from the Dems who somehow magically retake Congress.

Good.

If that's all they can think to do, the distraction is working.

A prayer is not a plan--they have no policies, no plans, nothing.
Nothing but scorched earth and wailing.

Nothing that will appeal to the working class voters who voted for Obama, then Trump.
They have no idea they need those voters back--instead, they keep calling them nothing but old, racists who need to die soon.

109 I don't know if it's one or a couple of articles, but there's been a lot of talk lately about the end of the left's cultural dominance.

I'm calling Bullshit on that right now.
We said essentially the same thing under Reagan, except back then they were just called liberals, because they hid under that label rather than admit to Marx.

There's no end until the Left's gains are rolled back on a cultural level AND on an administrative level.
The left locks in their gains. A minor attitude change may be temporary but the gains remain in place, ready to move Forward into the Glorious Future just as soon as political winds change again.

What is needed for real change is a truckload of crowbars, some lighters, train cars full of salt, and some earth movers. Then we can talk.

She's one of five daughters. One left to go. It was a great party. One daughter eloped and lives in LA (she's the lone lefty of the family), and there was one big wedding and anther one this weekend. New bride and husband live in Oz and are heading back in a couple of weeks, and will have another ceremony for the Aussie family and friends.

It was so fun and cool. All the young people who grew up together were there, including one close friend of D'oh Boy's who flew down from Chicago for the night.

I wouldn't doubt it. Some of the weddings we've attended recently have been week-long affairs, with over-the-top parties, cruises, etc. prior to the actual weddings (which have also been over-the-top). And these are couples who have been living together for a few years.

199 372 I asked a climatologist (yes, I live in a town that houses a government think-tank/lab, so I actually run into these types from time to time) about a week ago at the bar what the target temperature of the Earth is.

He laughed and said "What do you mean?".

I asked him if we were concerned about rising temperatures, what exactly is the optimal temperature for the Earth. He said there is no such thing. So I asked him why I should worry, that some people have said it is the biggest threat to the world.

He followed up by spouting that catastrophes would happen, etc. I asked him at what temperature that would happen. Again, no answer.

I then pressed further and asked what we should do if the Earth got too cold because we eliminated greenhouse gasses. Would we all be ordered to cut down trees and burn coal to begin warming the Earth?

He said I was ridiculous. I told him for someone paid six figures to study these things he didn't seem to have very many answers, especially given that he was asserting with certainty that doom and gloom were coming.

He got mad and cashed out and left. The bartender asked me why I had to bother his customers like that.

Why can't scientists, who seem to deal in certainties answer simple applied questions in their field? I get more direct, cogent answers out of Pastors about ontological questions than I seem to get out of "fact-based" scientists.

It's weird.

My niece gets married next June. Family kerfluffle is she does not want her sister to attend. They have no relationship to speak of, and there have been incidents when the two have been together at family functions (including a thrown punch). Sister has emotional/mental issues leading to several hospice stays after 'suicide' attempts.

Even if there was only a 1% chance of a meltdown, i understand not having here there. Even if nothing happens, you spend the day waiting for something to happen.

More downside is grandmother may boycott if sister is not invited. The joys of marrying into a big family.

Posted by: Buzzsaw90 at October 16, 2017 10:20 AM (oGRue)

When I got married, we didn't have my brother or the Bastard Ex's sister as attendants. We explained this away by we wanted a smallish wedding with only four on each side and the friends took up those spots and we just couldn't stretch it, sorry.

Real story? His sister is a junkie and we did not trust her in the slightest not to be high as a kite at the wedding (she was high as a kite at the wedding) and to avoid any drama with her in the wedding party, we just didn't have my brother in it either to look fair.

The only people who did not know this was the real reason were my ex sister in law and my former mother in law. Everyone else knew exactly what was going on.

That's like when Boy BFF finally got married, he called me up and said "You don't want to be in the wedding party, right?" I heard his now wife yelling THAT'S AWFUL DON'T SAY THAT and my response was "Fuck no, you know I would hate that."

I love his wife, she is one of the nicest people you will ever meet and way way way too good for him but she can be an utter dingbat. She wanted me to be a groomsmaid for him, which would have been fine but she wanted me to be in a matching tux with the guys and a trillion times no. No, that's not cute and charming and oh so modern, that's just stupid.

In the thing I recall reading, the idea was more of a social network thing-- in close families, people are more accountable to each other.

Contrast that to poor financial control-weddings, and I'm sure *those types* are less successful.

TLR: there's at least 2 axes/variables on the chart-- big Bridezilla weddings and large family weddings aren't necessarily the same. Overlap, sure.

Posted by: @votermom @vm pimping great books usually free or sale at October 16, 2017 10:43 AM (hMwEB)

The studies on that are all over the place. The issue is the same as the 50% of all marriages end in divorce problem. That study lumps in someone who has been divorced two or more times with people who have been divorced once or never at all.

Same thing with the big marriage vs. small marriage. The small ones are usually second or third or on and on marriages and those are people who are more likely to get divorced again.

The late, lamented BFF was nigh to a Commie but she and I disagreed about the huge, lavish weddings. Mind you, I love other people's weddings, so long as I don't have anything to do with it, but once you get over spending about $15,000 or so, I get a bit to the barricades comrades about it.

BFF, on the other hand, was all the bigger the better. Why? Because weddings employ nearly exclusively small, local businesses. The wedding dress. Renting the tuxes. The venue. The catering. The band. In the vast majority of cases, those are all small, local business so the more you spend, the better your friends and neighbors do.

It's a fair point.

Eventually he had 1500 rats living in his house uncaged. He would pour fifty pound bags of rat chow onto the floors for them to eat. They would all start fighting ,etc.

They destroyed his house. It was so bad, he was sleeping on a couch in his adjacent workshop.

The humane society came with the clean up crew and they actually caught all the rats over a few days, and those that weren't too injured to survive were checked by a vet and then hauled in small containers to different rescues for rehoming. It took a full semi trailer to haul them all out.

318 299 I read a Dear Abby recently where the Bridezilla didn't want anyone in the wedding party wearing glasses, including the future MiL. She wanted them fitted with contacts.

And one of the women in the wedding party had a broken foot or something and was in a cast and on crutches. The bride was demanding she lose the crutches for the ceremony.

What the actual hell is going through a groom's mind when he sees that stuff? Does he not realize his life is going to be a living hell??

I went to a friend's wedding a few years ago, and after the reception we were hanging out in the hotel lounge, having a few drinks, when I saw - and heard - the bride from another wedding (still in her gown) cursing & berating the hotel clerk about something that wasn't to her liking. The groom turned and looked at me with a "My God, what have I done?" expression on his face.

He was immediately forced to repudiate his statement and ordered to undergo reprogramming sensitivity training.

Oh, the French Revolution is something else entirely, yeah. IMO, there haven't been enough actual revolutions to make too many sweeping generalizations or classifications.

For historians to decide a thing is a "revolution" or "revolt" or "civil war" or whatever-- it's subjective. No one ever consults a dictionary or encyclopedia and says, "Okay, so we need these ingredients for a revolution, or if we want an uprising, we do this...."

Types and forms of government are the same way. You don't go into it saying "Well, I want a federal republic, which has these features..."

Agreed. The reality is this: When the first shots rang out at Lexington, it was arguably a Civl War. It remained one until July 2 and 4, 1776 as a formal matter. However, the rejection of the Olive Branch Petition in August of 1775 made its metamorphosis into a War of Independence inevitable. Calling it a War of Independence is a better term for it than a Revolution.

"Observing," that's what I shoulda called it!

406 371 American Revolution was not a continuation of the English civil wars, but of the Glorious Revolution of 1688. That was bloodless, pretty much, and the Englishters were awfully proud of it, which explains them getting a little huffy about our lot not finding it quite enough.

412 I was at a wedding in Jersey (in April) where the food was over-the-top, much like Jane D'Oh described above. At the end of the affair when everyone was leaving, they were handed a bag with a Pork Roll and Cheese sandwich on the way out the door.

Well, the pork roll (taylor ham) was a nice touch actually, because it doesn't really exist much outside of jersey. Other than that, yeah its getting silly out there.

414 This was my NJ lavish wedding. We married in front of the municipal judge-Four quests. My sister and BIL, his aunt and a dear friend. We went out for dinner.
We did, however, go to San Francisco for a honeymoon. SF was nicer at the time than now, I believe.

419 Popular wedding music The Bridal Chorus (Here Comes the Bride, Big Fat and Wide) comes from Wagner's opera Lohengrin and thjngs didn't work out too well for the happy couple there. The groom leaves the bride when she breaks her oath to never ask him his name. (SPOILER ALERT: Lohengrin). What I take from this is when you marry, never use your real name.

421 Most municipality water systems are pressurized by water towers. True
those towers have to be filled by wells of some other type of pump but
they have back up generators for that.

And those back up generators are fueled by ??? Back up generators are like a battery backed up power supply for a computer; both are temporary solutions not months to years long solutions.

I said a power failure lasting months. Such as would occur from a solar storm affecting the entire earth. I am not specifically talking about an EMP attack.

By the way, the EMP from the "Starfish" 1.4 megaton high altitude test in 1962 knocked out electronics in Hawaii (800 miles away) and New Zealand (1300 miles away) as well as shorting out 300 street lights in Honolulu - so your statement earlier that EMP only affected test instrumentation and nothing on the ground is - sadly - false.

Unlike global warming the physics behind EMP is not bullshit. There is scientific dispute about how effective an EMP attack would be. But the Starfish test showed it does have a real and noticeable effect even at long range.
