The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg
"Harvey Weinstein used to come here regularly. Promised some animals he would make them big stars, like the MGM lion or Tony the Tiger. No, I'm not going to go into details, but now we've got a couple of orangutans in counseling, a pretty young wildebeest who's gone all emo and a manatee with an eating disorder. And the potted plants in the front office all have PTSD."

Whither colonialism?

From yesterday:

199 Even Obama's half-bro in Kenya wished the Brits had stayed in Kenya longer, admiring what they accomplish for S Africa.

There are Indians who argue that maybe the Raj it was worth it, to get a decent banking/financial system.

Posted by: Lance McCormick at October 10, 2017 12:02 PM (u0s1P)

So you all know that in the field of what might be called 'Third World Studies', the prevailing view is that colonialism is bad. That is, anytime white guys showed up in a land outside Europe, the results were always bad, brown people were massacred, resources plundered, villages pillaged, entire cultures destroyed, environment devasted, etc.

This is a rigid article of the orthodox academic faith that nobody questions.

So, a short while ago, a peer-reviewed journal called 'Third World Quarterly' published what they called a "Viewpoint essay" (which sounds like it might be kind of like an oped piece in a newspaper) entitled "The case for colonialism". The essay suggested that well, maybe we should have another look at it, because perhaps, just perhaps, the results of colonialism weren't universally bad.

And you won't believe what happened next.

This:

When you're on the left, thuggery and violence is always an option. Because in this case, it worked.

As I read this batshit crazy tweet, I thought to myself, self, you really need to come up with a unit of measurement to measure internet craziness analogous to the 'kohn' that we use for internet stupidity. At first I thought the 'olbermann', but it seemed too awkward. The 'olby' might be better, but then this latest tweet showed up and I thought, the 'daou' might be what we want: microdaous, millidaous, etc. I mean, these are all huge quantities that are almost too big for everyday use. Problem is, Daou isn't crazy so much as he is blindly partisan, probably the most blindly partisan guy I have ever seen. On the other hand, that tweet is breathtakingly insane. So somewhere up the partisan scale, you slip over into the crazy.

So I don't know. I'm still working on it. Your ideas are welcome.

And by the way, the squabbling in the comments between the bernie bros and Hillary fans is amusing.

According to Twitter, this video contains content that is 'inflammatory' and 'negative', so they suspended it:

These tweets, however, are just fine:

Here is another compilation of dance numbers from classic movies set to modern music, and it's impressive how the editor was able to sync up the music with the dancing. It's very fun:

75 Colonialists were often assholes. They were, however, assholes with (usually) the habits and generational practices of civilization.

The Marxist claim is that because the colonized were "oppressed", that they were not assholes. As Gershwin, "It Ain't Necessarily So". Worse, it takes hundreds of years for a culture to pick up the best habits and generational practices of BASIC CIVILIZATION.

To get to non-asshole basic civilization requires a transition from non-civilized assholes to civilized assholes as a pre-req. This is not rocket science.

Like a two year old snotty faced poopy pants brat says the 'F' word and all the adults laugh because it is so cute when a two year old says the word.

Of course, the two year old never grows out of it, and when he wants adult attention what do you think he will say?

Of course, Olberman's audience his happy to hear him say it, because Olberman is rich and a celebrity and when Olberman says it, that validates his fans use of the same language.

So that is all the left can say; F this, F that, F you, F the ficus plant. F F F F F F F F, and when that doesn't work any longer, break windows and start fires.

Posted by: steevy at October 11, 2017 11:52 AM (rmVvL)

90 The dance compilation is cute, fun to watch - the people who put it together noticed a very simple trick to make it work.

The vast majority of pop music, especially dance music then and now, uses a very simple basic march as its meter - ONE and TWO and ONE and TWO and.

(waltz's being notable exceptions, and I must say I prefer a good waltz myself)

So, any dance step set to that timing can be set to any piece of music, as long as the bpm as measured by a metronome is pretty close.

Some groups of course are known for much more complicated time signatures. I remember hearing an interview with one of the original Chicago members telling how they were always impressed with the people in their early, live performances, working out how to dance to their stuff, even though they were using 13/4 time, variable time, whatever.

Daou was born in Lebanon, to Arthur Daou, a Lebanese businessman, and

The Daou were a New York-based dance music quintet composed of Peter Daou (keyboards), Vanessa Daou (vocals), Mike Caro (guitar), Leon Dorsey (bass), and former 24-7 Spyz member Anthony Johnson (drums). Their only album Head Music was released in 1992, with its debut single "Surrender Yourself" rising to number one on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart, where it remained for 11 weeks.

170 I freakin' love Worcestershire Sauce.

Works magic in beef stew and shepherd's pie.

Never apply it to a rice product, on purpose or by accident. The vinegary elements sink into and sog the grain, and leave the oils/etc. on the surface. Neither acidic rice nor raisin and fish oil alone are good things.

In fact, it's enough to make you gag.

It has given the anti-Western civ leftists in Europe and America a guilt stick with which to beat people over the head in order to justify really bad ideas (like France taking in people from all of its former colonies).

And for those colonized. They may bear superficial signs of "improvement". They wear our clothes, adopted our technology, adopted governments that are closer to ours than the ones they previously had.

But they are resentful that the source of their improvement came from an outside source. I don't think this will ever go away. We should never have gone into those places in the first place. If you knew that could teach a man to fish, but then he would kill you because he did not invent fishing, you had no obligation to teach him in the first place.

261 And for those colonized.

Ask yourself this: Do the English bear an unreasonable hatred for Italians and Italians specifically, even to this day?

The trouble is not that a man who knows how to fish doesn't need you anymore, it's that fishing needs to be as natural to him as to you, and take the time to *belong to him as well*. It's all an issue of time scale: the Colonial era frankly wasn't "finished with" the nations colonized when the World Wars put a stop to it.

Inasmuch as cultural presence is a stronger influence than cultural force and misapplication of cultural force can leave presence unable to germinate its seeds... there were problems. But it took the Romans hundreds of years in England.

their "separation of powers" and decentralized control was not planned or noble, but still a nice idea. More individual freedom (maybe).

But groups form, and gain power, and decide they are more important than other small groups. The nation state "evolved" and even then they formed alliances, for defensive purposes.

There is also the advantage of sharing ideas, and of course world soccer leagues. Civilization made stronger nation states ... but they still colonized as is the nature of man. The Brits were still subjects, but they brought a system of justice, a rule book that at lease loosely let all "play" the game without killing the loser. (But Mandela went back and sang about killing off the enemy tribes ... paradise lost)

The US advanced "one nation under God" further, absolute individual liberty directly under God (no human middle men), but still bound together for common defense. And sovereign states within the nation-state. The balance between individual liberty, but defensively strong as a nation. (and advancements by one, shared with all the others ... but the motivated inventor rewarded .. capitalism and its legal framework)

Then the Soviets decided all that must be destroyed .. commie groups infiltrated, divided us.

334 We always seem to give the Left the excuse of being crazy, insane, stupid, partisan - but they aren't. They are sane, (yes there are 'crazy' ones, but they are the street level useful-idiots) smart often brilliant, cunning, devious, at least borderline sociopaths and entirely anti-American.

The Right acts as though the Leftists are 'just moronic Democrats doing what they do' and believe that if we just win a bunch of elections they will calm down and come to their senses. Bullshit.

Dangerous bullshit. Look where it's gotten us and America.

They've all but completed their Gramscian 'long march through the institutions'. Anti-American Leftists own the media, academia, much to most of the government bureaucracy and they creating and saving their populist and popular hatred of Americanism and so America.

The thing is, we should be able to ignore them in the same way we mostly ignore squatchers and UFO-ers. Once you see behind the curtain, most people should easily be able to reject the bs.

Occasionally there are people like that Hawaiian math "prof" who claimed that math is racist. But they've never been able to march into that institution.

There needs to be a way to train the human mind to be as reliable in assessing liberal arguments (or recognizing subliminal propaganda) as it is in assessing a mathematical proof. The "Gramscian march" should never have worked. It should have flopped as badly as all of the Klan's marches have throughout the past.

337 "But they are resentful that the source of their improvement came
from an outside source. I don't think this will ever go away. We should
never have gone into those places in the first place."

One of my best Facebook friends lives mostly in Europe but has a house in Senegal, has built several there. He sorta has a crew there, connections. They seem very happy to drive trucks and use modern inventions.

The resentment may be expressed by old tribal lords that feel a loss of their little authoritarian control. Those types still run their gangs many places. Winnie Mandela kept up the tribal ways while Nelson pretended to become Westernized ... but he went back to tribalism. His tribal wars killed far more black than apartheid ever did.

The commoners don't have resentments so much, and the dead would probably prefer Apartheid, if they could speak. But warlords are like Weinstein ... they don't really care to become "civilized". Blood lust ... or whatever ...

341 The only important Latin influence in Britain is from the Normans. Bah.
The level of pre-invasion civilization in the British isles is easy to understate. Plus, it was the continued trade with Normandy and improved stability of local governance in most of the isles that made a war of succession (and subsequent invasion) even come about - and which had tamed the isle enough that William had the ability to form a unified kingdom.

The Romans didn't leave because England was impossible to tame, and though they might have considered it a *failed* colony by some margin, what's France then?

My larger point is that both England and France are successful products of a colonial power's civilizing effects, in many ways.

What would be your recommendation? Shooting them?"

No, but the institutions they've infected need to be torn down, torn apart, and new institutions built in their place.

Since that involved most of the institutions that we take for granted in modern American life, this is no small task. It took at least a century of constant degradation to get things to this point - it will take at least a century of work to put things right, if it can be put right. All we can do is start, but none of us will live long enough to see it completed.

The good part for us is that, in taking over the institutions, the left has now made themselves subject to the rot, the decay, and the pervasive corruption that all institutions are afflicted with over time. They own it now.

Right, a president publicly expressing himself on something as basic as televised rituals involving the national anthem is a "slippery slope" to North Korean-style control over people's behavior. And she sticks with him until he can longer provide the influence to peddle her wares. Then, gone in sixty seconds.

Eh. I think a lot of these Hollywood marriages are "marriages".

There were rumors, which I have no idea are true or not, about Kevin Costner when he first showed up on the scene, to the effect-

that he'd been around for years but couldn't get traction for acting in movies until he got access to the right Hollywood parties and banged the right influential women and wives of influential guys to get some one to vouch for him and suddenly "Shazam!" - Kevin Costner movie star.

The banging of young stars outside of marriage may be a two way street for both.

450 England was "colonized" by Angles, Saxons and Jutes. Suppose they brought the Roman influence too?

The influence of Civilization. More to the point, the waves of invasion produced a natural synthesis which accommodated later civilizing culture. The Germanic tribes were also to some extent in competition with the Romans on the mainland, so this is comparable to a colonial area with multiple colonizing nations.

The Jutes, oddly enough, adopted more Roman culture than the Saxons did.

My larger point is that a sustained colonial presence of any kind laid over a less culturally advanced people *does* result in a native increase in civilization... but only if enough generations pass that a synthesis occurs. I really don't think that's arguable, nor that the colonial period was cut short.

470 "The Right acts as though the Leftists are 'just moronic Democrats
doing what they do' and believe that if we just win a bunch of elections
they will calm down and come to their senses. Bullshit

They are basically foreign agents, operating as a shadow entity rather than "America First" citizens. Instead of acting within their local governments, they form exterior power groups. Blacks, lawyers, CAIR, illegal alien groups like LaRaza, ... 50 different power groups that act coercively against government. They return to the gang warfare, tribalism, destroy the rest.

When we see Weinstein skate for decades, and Hillary, and others, it is because they operate outside our government ... the shadow government. This had external state support ... largely the Soviets in the day, now a conglomerate of anti-American powers.

This is why they so hate Trump for demanding unity, loyalty to the American Tribe. And loyalty to control of borders. Democrats act as a mob ... their fellow citizens are the enemy if they don't join their "commie tribe". We are deplorable and irredeemable, and must be punched or killed on sight.

But yes, most of the hard core Dems are dumb, but they are run by their subversive betters.

Oh, that would be so great.

I have to say, the fact that the NY Times came out with these revelations worries me a little. What motive can they have for outing a liberal Hollywood exec who has given millions to Democrats? I'd say the Bernie fans are using this to knock Hillary out of the picture - but it also reflects poorly on Obama. Do they want to get conservatives all in an uproar about this because they've got something even worse on a Republican?

If Bannon somehow found a way to plant this without showing his hand - that's genius.

475 CNBC Headline - Boy Scouts expand programs to include girls. Isn't that the point of the Girl Scouts?

Well, the Venture Scouts programs were meant to include girls after they'd had enough life experience that adult leaders didn't have to worry so much about 13-year-olds playing doctor...

But as to the purpose of the Girl Scouts, it was never "Scouting" in the Boy Scout sense so much as a parallel home-ec-ish sort of thing until the feminists landed their talons in it.

These new programs are integrated? Eenteresting. Still a better and safer outlet for an outdoorsey girl than the atrocious Girl Scouts PP-Is-Cool-and-Men-Suck programs, IMO.

Fascinating that the Left has destroyed the NFL by tricking the NFL into becoming committed leftists, to the point where they cannot back down without losing face. Similar to how Dems tricked the inner cities into becoming committed Dems.

I wonder if the reason the left hates the NFL is that the left depends on racial schisms. But think about whites wearing jerseys of their favorite sports heroes, regardless of race. I think that tends to work against racism, and so the left needs to destroy sports as another means of polarizing the races.

As I recall keeping girls out of Cubs and Boy Scouts was done as a courtesy to the Girl Scouts of America. Other BSA programs, Venturing for instance, have been open to girls for quite some time.

I still feel a tiny bit bad about this, but when I was a Cub leader I always let my daughters of the appropriate age participate in the Den activities. Both my girls then dropped out of Girl scouts shortly thereafter, because we were having much more fun. I tried to volunteer to help the local Girl Scout troop with their fundraising, but they wanted nothing to do with a guy. If my experience is typical (no idea if is is or not) the young girls of this country are not being well served.

Lots of the shorts that made it onto Mystery Science Theater 3000 from the '50s, shorts like "Keeping Clean and Neat" and "Posture Pals" and so on grew out of the Progressive movement's ownership of schools and vision of the Perfectability of Man.

They're only jarringly "white" and "square" today because the Progressives back then had not fouled their own nest as badly, and still had a more traditional target for perfection in their insane nannying aims.

And when his girlfriend asked him (via text, which she released) how he could ask her to have an abortion in light of some anti-abortion press releases and twitter announcements he'd just been making (supposedly) over the previous week, he replied "oh yeah, I cringed when I saw that stuff too. Counseling your girlfriend to kill her unborn kid is because it's totes detrimental to your marriage is not "stupid" and the "thinking" in question is not from "the wrong head." An extramarital affair is pretty much by definition not "nice," but it's a common enough transgression, I'll grant you. But trying to persuade the girlfriend to off the kid in the womb is in a whole 'nother category. Even if the adultery were not premeditated (and it may well have been), the abortion-talk was. I haven't read all 500+ comments above mine, so I'm not sure if this has already been suggested. You seem to be looking for the most insane tweets and naming those as the standard. I think a more workable unit would be something that is only mildly or occasionally insane so that units greater than 1 can be typically seen. Your idea of using milli- or centi- prefixes is good, but I think it would be better to start with a unit that doesn't typically require such modification. Of course, if your aim is not a lasting unit, but mearly to mock a specific individual, then that's another thing.

533 If Daou is so bad, why do the Spartans keep shouting his name in "300"?

534 As I read this batshit crazy tweet, I thought to myself, self, you
really need to come up with a unit of measurement to measure internet
craziness analogous to the 'kohn' that we use for internet stupidity.

How about D'OW

535 There are some major problems with both the kohn and the olby as units of measure. First, both are way too large of a unit to use in everyday circumstances. Measuring everyday stupidity with either unit is analogous to measuring your daily commute in light years.

Secondly, we need to establish a datum for a single kohn or single olby. One act from each namesake that is defined as a single kohn or single olby. Otherwise, it is impossible to use the units effectively and transmit any scale to acts measured in said units.

536 I think you are truly missing out on something if you don't slip a Dworkin in there somewhere. We have to have a dworkin.
