Uh-Oh: CEO of the Dish Network Says That It's No Longer Unthinkable to Simply Drop ESPN from Cable Networks
Update: Thread Has Become Cord-Cutting Advice/Recommendations/Q&A

Before getting to that, let me post this fairly minor item that doesn't deserve a full post, from Variety yesterday:

Walt Disney’s ESPN, under scrutiny as it works its way through subscriber losses, said it would reorganize the executives who supervise its overall content production.

"Under scrutiny" from its corporate parent as it loses more and more subscribers, and "reorganizing." Not great words for a business.

Now, as you almost certainly know, anyone with cable is forced to pay ESPN something like $7 per month, almost $100 per year, whether they watch it or not, because ESPN is almost always included in the "base" package, and the ESPN fee is extracted from your wallet as part of the "base package" rate.

Cable companies battle ESPN to keep that fee down, while ESPN fights to get it higher. As ESPN continues to lose viewers (and thus their advertising-side revenue), and as their too-costly broadcast rights cost them more and more, ESPN is going to want -- need, really -- to jack up that Involuntary Rent Payment that cable subscribers are forced to pay to really high levels.

Cable companies are making noise that no, it's not unthinkable any longer that we would simply drop you.

If that happened, Katie Bar the Door, because that would destroy ESPN's business model.

Now the CEO from Dish Network has a dog in this fight. It is in his interest to talk tough about dropping ESPN entirely, because he wants to signal he has leverage in their negotiations for carrying the network automatically/involuntarily.

If subscribers had to choose to pay for ESPN rather than having it forced upon them, well, ESPN's books would bleed red. I'm not sure they could even survive three years.

So while this is probably just some posturing for negotiation points, it's still great to hear that one cable company (Altice) seems serious about just dumping them, and another company (the Dish Network) is thinking about dumping them as well.

9 Technology now makes it easy enough to simply let consumers choose what channels they want to pay for, regardless of any bundling laws. Decade ago, it was much harder to filter.

I would think a cable company would actively want to have an a la carte as a business model to attract people.

When it's all or nothing,a lot of people choose "nothing" But it you could get a few channels on cable for like $20 a month, there would be fewer cord cutters.

And companies like ESPN and MTV would be wiped out financially.

10 I have two cable providers for Internet in my area, Comcast and Consolidated Communications (nee Surewest), which itself grew out of tiny telephone providers that were once exceptions to the Ma Bell Monopoly Phone Company.

I hope Surewest picks this up.

20 All that really needs to happen is that cable companies need to hold the line on their contracts to Disney to remove the contract clause that requires them to put ESPN on their basic tier of service.

Put ESPN in an add-on tier instead of the basic tier and watch with glee how many subscribers it loses.

I don't think so. College ball has pretty low costs for players (theoretically zero, though we know that's not quite true).

Sure, the NCAA money pays coaches top dollar and pays for lots of good equipment and doctors, but it's not like college football didn't exist before the big tv money.

I'm not sure where all that NCAA money goes -- I imagine most of it goes to subsidize OTHER college sports besides football and baseball.

173 Does anyone have Sling?

IF so, can you answer some questions:

1, does it carry local terrestrial tv broadcasts? I might want to occasionally tune into local news, especially during weather events. Sling says it carries *live local sports* broadcast locally, but doesn't say if it shows the local broadcasters generally, throughout the day.

2, given that it's over the internet, is it often glitchy or laggy or pixelated?

177 And Sling is owned by Dish. ESPN *knows* that Charlie Ergen isn't kidding because he's doing it with Sling TV.
Posted by: filbert at September 27, 2017 02:12 PM (s5o+q)

Sling rolls ESPN into their Orange package. We only have the orange package for Disney Jr. (I'm sure Disney/ABC knows this, so they'll force Dish to keep most of their channels together.)

Eventually though, our daughter will grow up of the Disney Jr. phase (though the son arriving in march will enter it at that point) and I'll drop it though.
And we're an edge case in the sense that we have kids in that age range. I probably wouldn't let my kid watch diddly shit on the other Disney Channels, so basically anyone who's kids are over 5 can drop ESPN like a hot potato and lose...nothing.
(Seriously the only thing in Sling orange NOT in Sling Blue is ESPN.)

We get most of the UVA baseball games on ESPN3 through Comcast. But why do we have to buy ALL of Comcast/ESPN to do that? Why can't we just pay for a UVA baseball package or at least a college baseball package?

Baseball--by virtue of being #2--doesn't have the national exposure that the NFL enjoys, so it's harder to hijack than the NFL. Also, the players are mostly white, tend to be more conservative, and are old-fashioned about "rules." And the Latin players tend not to want to make waves. Even the African-Americans that play in MLB tend to be suburban, not ghetto-rats.....

250 Disney has a few levers they can use. In addition to ESPN, they also own The Disney Channel (of course), A&E, and ABC.

ABC would seem like the big one, except that they deliver that content to their franchisees, and those stations make their own deals with the cable companies. ABC owns a few of those stations outright in the big markets like LA, NYC and Chicago.

So, Disney can threaten to get tough with regards to their other channels, but that's only going to get them so far.

I think much of it also can be attributed to the fact that many MLB players also come from counties where the government and its police forces are truely abusive so they know they have it good here

Even the more expensive models tend to come with crap connecting cables, but you can just swap in a piece of good quad-shielded instead.

In that connection, the statement by Aaron Rodgers is astonishing. He wants "the fans" to ...... um, do something, to show "unity", or something, so that society can "grow" .... or something.

Well, he may have done us a favor. If more than 18 people at Lambeau do anything to "support" the stupid, incoherent, offensive, but mostly racist whining that is behind the anthem "protests", then we'll know the country truly is lost.

But I'm not holding my breath for that to happen.

disney's tough. I'd love to bring it down, but no parent is going to boycott it. Kids like the movies too much, and parents like being able to just put on Frozen for the kids and having a couple of hours of peace to themselves.

Marvel's getting really lame. The Defenders was crap, after all that waiting, and it turns out it was the *lowest rated* of all Netflix Marvel tv shows. Weird. But it does seem like people are getting over it.

I sit below my neighbors to the east by about 5-7 feet (our subdivision is basically houses in stadium seating, each row sits below the next so we're above our western neighbors.)

Problem is all our TV signals come in from the ESE. And our TV is on the west side of the house. So despite only be 11 miles from the transmitter I had to buy a 50 mile antenna, place it just so that it basically sits in the area that lines up with a gap in the houses (houses are also staggered a bit). And still it cuts out a fair amount.

But we're not paying charter a shit ton anymore. (Overall bill is only down by about $10/month. Could be a lot lower if we told our daughter to suffer. Alas, we spoil her.)

330 One more thing...

I think age of TV also affects what stations you can get with a rabbit antenna.

I have an older TV in another room, that I have an upgraded Antenna for & it does not bring in near the number of stations the new TV does ( with an ancient rabbit ear antenna).

So I think TV age also impacts what you can pick up OTA. JMO

I think because ESPN and the cable companies are separate entities, and fight with each other over this.

yeah but like when you start adding in all these channels, you wind up jacking up the cost, and also, you buy these channels as a package deal along with a bunch of other channels.

Still, it's probably still cheaper than cable, and I think I remember that I could avoid getting ESPN even adding in some more channels. But I'm not sure about that.

I think because ESPN and the cable companies are separate entities, and fight with each other over this.

If ESPN owned cable companies, and then used its local monopolies to force people to buy ESPN, that would be a tying violation. But the fact that these are separate entities, i think, keeps them out of hot water.

This is the 'point of sale' or point of coercion where some kind of anti-trust is perhaps in order. Why not let me pay for the channels I want, a la carte? Is there some technical reason I can't do that, or is it the commies in the political stream that force feed their commie stations?

With tech advances, I'm thinking it is merely the providers wanting to sell the add ons, and/or being offered a bulk package by some higher up shadow commie in the system.

OK. I took a piece of cardboard about two feet long, bent it in the middle into a shallow V-shape, and taped aluminum foil to it to cover the surface.

Then I place the contraption next to the wireless router, and on the neighbor's side of the router. The aluminum foil reflects the microwaves from the router back into our house, and away from the neighbors.

If you really want to optimize the signal* pick up a WiFi analyzer from the Google Play store (for Android, of course), so you can actually measure the wifi signal strength, and thereby optimize the position of the contraption.

* We previously had picked up a TP-link range extender, which helped a lot, but adding the contraption put the signal in the house through the roof.

If you get a range extender - which I recommend - be sure to place it relatively closer to the router rather than farther away. A strong incoming signal to the range extender works a LOT better than a weak one.

477 About 7 or 8 years ago I met this shady character who used a local cafe as his "office." He was the front man for a hacker network which had figured out how to hack the DirecTV cards to allow free and unlimited access. (I think the actual coders were in Germany). For only $25, he claimed, he would supply me with a hacked DirecTV card -- all I had to do was insert it into a DirecTV receiver and I would get not only the base package but the entire raw feed, at no additional cost.

The problem is, it was up to me to supply my own satellite dish and DirecTV receiver.

Well, by chance, a few months later someone was throwing out both those things in a dumpster as they were moving out of their house, so I scavenged the dish and the receiver, and after some procrastinating went up on the roof and bolted the dish down and with the help of online instructions pointed it in the general vicinity of the satellite. The I ran a cable down in through the window and plugged it into the receiver.

THEN I went back to the guy at the cafe where he was still doing his undercover business selling these hacked cards. Knowing I could be be getting ripped off, but just on a whim and for the fun of it decided to gamble to $25 anyway, I bought one from him.

Took it home, turned on the receiver, stuck in the card, and -- BAZOOMBA HOLY COW!! it worked!

Not only did it work, but it worked better than I could even have imagined, because not only did I get ALL channels of ALL kinds, but I got them IN EVERY TIME ZONE, so I could basically watch anything in existence at whatever time I wanted. I mean EVERYTHING -- Tagalog soap operas, pay-per-view, The Badminton Channel, porn --- if it was broadcast, I got it. EST, CST, PST, Hawaii time, Guam time. The raw feed. Unfiltered.

That lasted about a year before suddenly it all stopped. I went online and discovered that DirecTV had performed one of its occasional "upgrades" where they mail out new cards to everyone and changed the scrambling algorithm. All the old cards were rendered useless.

I went back to the guy and he said that this is to be expected, happens periodically, and it will take the German dudes a few weeks to crack the new algorithm - - which will cost me another $25 for another card.

By then I had become bored with cable TV, and didn't buy the new one.

That was the only time I ever "had cable." It was an interesting experiment, at least.

yeah, it is funny that the NFL and their dimwit blue checkmark sportswriter fanbois (we can has be smart too!) think that last weekend's protests were spot on because the NFL was attacked by trump and this is what they need to focus on during the anthem. I still can't believe Florio at the end of SNF said that shizz with a straight face.

so, what is it you're in unity with? The fans fucking hate the kneelers. You're giving credence to the kneelers by supporting them and emulating them. Trump reflected this zeitgeist and you have no sympathy in pretending you're under attack.

so what is the point of linking arms? Now it's to say we're united against trump attacking us? WHAT?

DON'T COMMENT ON OLD THREADS!

Since then, some updates. Sling offers Cloud DVR for an additional $5 a month. DirecTV Now is on Roku now.

We kept Sling instead of cancelling it because the On Demand services are about 20x better. More availability, sooner, it just works better. On DirecTV Now it takes longer for the latest in a series to show up in On Demand, and there are fewer episodes (usually). Lots of buffering and errors. But, there are more channels.

Actually, I think these were "cloned" cards -- they didn't have any DirecTV logo on them or anything. They must have figured out how to buy the cards in bulk and clone the signal descrambling code onto them. Way over my head, technology-wise. But I really doubt they were pilfering them one by one from the boxes in the store.

Yes, I later read, after a few years, that DirecTV had ultra-souped-up its scrambling code security to make the cards essentially unhackable. Don't know if the German dudes ever could hack the new system. Probably not. I haven't seen that guy in years. Now he's probably selling those little scanners that allow you to download the contents off the drive of any passing cell phone within wifi reach. (Which is how various starlets and celebrities got their nude pictures hacked off their phones, apparently.)

To get internet signal to the TV. Most smart TVs or boxes have Wifi but I have a SmartTV that the Wifi sucks on - so I use a wireline adapter (box that plugs in your electrical outlet and sends signal over the wires in the house - one box is by the router and a network cable plugs into the cable router, one box by the TV and then from it with a network cable to the TV)

540 this is a $31 amplified antenna from Ebay ... for rural people, or even in the city, might work in an attic. I bought other stuff that didn't work so well, like some you might put right by the set. Elevation matters ... and amplification matters. anyway ... rather than pay dish or whoever for local stations, this works, and works feeding right into the antenna outlet on the DISH DVR. Even gives program info ... pretty seamless.

Amplification can be counter productive if you live to close to the signal. (Which is my problem. I'm too close for amplification since the signal comes in strong 80-90% of the time, but has interference occasionally.

Thing is, it all worked perfectly until about a year ago. This is Verizon FIOS. And then it started dropping everywhere in the house, and constantly throwing us off WiFi on our phones, which makes us go over data. And of course it's a pain for our computers.

583 Good news everybody!

Verizon and Comcast had been bombarding us for years to cut our copper wire and sign up. We've always resisted because we didn't want cable. As in none. They always refused to give it to us at a price we could afford.

A few months back, my wife even called Verizon and asked if they had any way they could sell us phone / internet alone, and they said, "fuck no, you gotta bend over for us, bitch."

Last month, a nice lady came to the door with the offer. We signed up with Verizon's "Double Play" service. Phone, and 50/50 internet for about $60 a month. We're on month to month contract, and in August 2018, we can call them and see if we can sign up for two years under this plan.

It may still go pear-shaped, of course, but the saleslady told us the new CEO was intent on reversing the company's shitty image and this was the first step.

Suck it, ESPN / NFL! Lick your balls and beg!

612 Can you believe "Touched by an Angel" was ever a network tv show?!?

It barely got on TV to begin with. The story of how that got onto broadcast is pretty interesting in its self. The network tapped a Christian writer working at the place for a show, but they wanted a goofy comedy that was pretty insulting to faith of any kind. I've only seen episodes from its final season (started watching when I was without cable) and was intrigued by how it didn't take the easy way out and give you happy endings (e.g. angel just keeps Chinese prisoner company as she's beaten to death by guards). Also, it always had a moment where the angel says "God loves you!" Considering what a cesspool network tv has been for years it was quite a surprise to hear that line again and again, unironically.

I remember reading an article somwhere that detailed the horrific degree to which their miltary has decayed. During the cold war their military was built much like Finland's: to basically bleed any invader dry using the local climate and landscape. Combined with a Navy and Airforce that punched well above its weigh and you have a country that could feasably defend their neutrality. Now? They're so weak that the Russians overfly their airspace and trespass in their waters at will. They're horribly underequiped and undermanned. So them wanting to join NATO makes sense. Cheaper than rebuildng the military the Social Democrats and Greens destroyed over the last few decades. It'd be stupid to let them in without hard assurances that they'd put a shitload of money into rebuilding. Which ain't happening under a "feminist" SD/Green government. Now Finland, they'd be a net positive if they joined. A nation of honeybadgers, they are.

656 Cord cutting?
Works pretty well.

A few years back I had Dish and a $40-50 a month bill.
Cut everything except the DVR connection (used for OTA stuff) and paid just $5 a month.
After a year or two Dish wouldn't let me run that trick anymore and I cut it entirely.

If I didn't watch the show live, I'd just find a copy on the internet. You can watch most network shows a day after they air on one of the network web pages.

After I moved to tiny town, Texas I could only pick up 1 TV channel OTA. But I got the Big Bandwidth on the internet so I just DL the TV shows I want to watch the next day. No commercials, natch.

I had been watching network news on their webpage a few minutes after the show ended but a few months ago I got so disgusted by the bias I stopped watching even that and don't miss it.

Amusing that I have a 55" TV screen and their's hardly ever a live TV show on it. I just thumbdrive the shows I want to watch on it. Better quality than watching on the computer and less distracting. If I watch TV on the computer I tend to jump to another diversion. If I watch a TV show on the TV I focus better and enjoy the show.

666 I haven't read through everything, but as a true Moronette, there's no reason for me to let that stop me:

1) had Sling for about 4 months; couldn't watch anything all they way through without waiting, particularly on weekends. No similar problems with things that go through the Roku;

2) if you have Roku, check out Pluto TV. They have TV (the Slow Channel or whatever it is that is just a train going through random European countryside) and movies you can watch on demand. The only problem with the movies is that you get 1 or 2 commercials that repeat a zillion times;

3) I will randomly watch stuff via the OTA antenna that I got. Some of the higher number channels get pixillated at times. Well, by definition, I am wasting time, so I just find some other channel to watch.

I also have Netflix which I mostly watch on my phone. I have internet but that is primarily for my kid. I use the internet on my phone. If I wanted to invest time in it (horrors!), I would actually sign in to YouTube and make a list or something. I watched Zulu there some months ago, and it seems you can get some of the older films there.

672 Late to this thread, but I've been cutting the cord recently so want to add my experiences. Some background - I live in South Jersey / Philly area, Verizon FIOS for internet/tv/phone for a little over $360/mo. Decided I had to stop the madness.

TV hardware - I bought 3 FireTV boxes ($99 ea). These allow me to stream anything to the TVs.

OTA TV - house already had an antenna, so I bought a Tablo (~$200 depending on model). Plugged antenna into Tablo. I now get 60 HD Philly channels. The Table has DVR and can stream to any device (Fire TV, mobile devices for me). Costs - one time purchase of Tablo.

Cable channels - there are many streaming services. They all have trials for a week or a month. I highly recommend you try each and make sure you and family members like the UI/Guide, channel selection, etc. I settled on PlayStation Vue for now with DirecTV Now in close second. Deciding factor was PSVue has DVR, DTVNow doesn't. PSVue is about $45/mo. Once DTVNow adds DVR, I will be switching - as an AT&T Wireless customer, I get HBO free and DTVNow is only $10/mo for more savings.

Movies - I have Amazon Prime ($99/yr) and Netflix ($10/mo). I could probably drop Netflix but other family members watch it.

Land lines - I'm in the middle of cutting the cord here. We have two land lines and because of older family members, can't just drop them. I bought an ObiHai 202 device (~$80). It allows me to plug the two house lines into it and use a VOIP service like Google Voice ($0).

In summary:
FIOS Internet only - $90/mo
Hardware - $300 one time
OTA/Tablo - $200 one time
PSVue streaming - $45/mo
movies - $20/mo
Land Lines - $80 one time
Total - $735 first mo, $155/mo after

I'll save another $35 mo when I switch to DTVnow in a couple of months. Also, everything is month to month, no commitments.
