387 111 OT: Is this "Vietnam" thing worth watching? Or is it typical Ken Burns?

Posted by: tu3031 at September 18, 2017 07:50 PM (O5Q3r)
---

From a friend:

This is Fred Koster, the Director of Ride the Thunder. Below is an extremely important and urgent update. The "final battle" in how the Vietnam War will be remembered in history, will happen late this year when Ken Burns releases his 18 hour Vietnam War documentary (which has been endorsed by John Kerry) and Steven Spielberg HUGE new movie release on the Pentagon Papers starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep. Now is the time to take action against these films, there are "no" tomorrows if we don't challenge them now.

Below are some important points about the Burns show preview.

No mention of communism, the left always did their best to convince the American people that we were fighting the Vietnamese not that we were fighting with the Vietnamese against communism.

No mention of the Soviet Union or Chinese involvement.

No mention of any type of victory or heroics of the Americans or South Vietnamese.

No mention of the South Vietnamese people (they do not want to recognize South Vietnam).

No mention of the communist atrocities.

No mention of the 250,000 boat people who died in the ocean trying escape.

No mention of the millions of refugees.

No mention of our ally- the Hmong people.

The continued propaganda that we were fighting the Vietnamese not communism.

How incredible and wonderful Vietnam is now under communism. It looks like an advertisement.

Emphasis on the struggle of the North Vietnamese and how brave they were.

The show opens with an USA air bombardment of the North then the misleading statement that the war was fought both in the north and the south.

An incredible horrible scene of a Viet Cong soldier describing how our soldiers were weeping about their killed companions.

One of the main music composers of the film is Chinese.

A good portion of this preview is about the music yet they have no time to show the South Vietnamese or the valor of our troops.

There is much more.

And "Veteran" - THIS is how stupid Americans are. Just this label actually affects peoples' votes. Little wonder the country is in the shape it is.

And if shoots a crossbow like he sings, he should worry about shooting his dick off. Anyhow why so early on the ad? wiki explains that

In early 2017, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee named Comstock and her 10th district seat one of their top targets in the 2018 midterm elections.[37] By May 2017, five Democrats had announced their candidacy for the Democratic nomination to run against Comstock.[38] In July 2017, Republican Shak Hill, who ran for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in 2014, announced that he was preparing to mount a primary challenge against Comstock in 2018.[39]

Comstock has been named as a potential candidate for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Tim Kaine in the 2018 election.

185 I watched "The Castro Tapes" last night on PBS. It was not overtly pro Castro but they glossed over the truth. What was interesting was all the MSM stars interviewing him: Wallace, Rather, Quinn, etc. ALL of them gushed over him and Cuba. Without exception they talked about what a great leader he was and how happy everyone was then hit him hard with softball questions about free elections and dissent. They slurped and swallowed when he said he had his own system. They loved him.
I watched 10 minutes of Vietnam and could smell the lies through the TV. The Left has nothing to sell except the memory of some soviet backed protest group nobly marching to stop the war. I fucking remember those times but some 30 year old neckbeard in Brooklyn sure doesn't. They are desperate to rewrite their last rewrite of history.
I wonder if Burns will go in depth to talk about the year there were over 300 bombings "to stop the war" or how after the war hundreds of thousands were put in camps if they were lucky.

Well, that will bring in HUGE ratings for it.

I'm betting that he'll be showing up further on to talk about seared memories and Genghis Khan.
Missed last night, watched the second part tonight. It's only up to 1963. US advisors, Kennedy, torched monks, and the assassinations of Nhu and Diem.
Pretty straight history. Some trouble on the horizon? The glorification of the media and the civil rights movement is creeping in a bit. So I'll watch it, but it's on a short leash.

"I'm probably in the minority, but I always thought Top Gun was kind of a lame movie."

The best thing about "Top Gun" was it was the test film that, by being successful, made it possible to own movies to play at home. It was released at $29.99 for sale on VHS at a time when, even if you had connections to buy one, VHS movies were only priced for the rental store market at over $100 per tape. After "Top Gun" it became possible and affordable to buy movies to play whenever you wanted.

And sometimes there are disagreements, but I like to stay neutral, like Switzerland, the country of origin for the New German Wave classic "Eisbar."

"geoffb5: i've always thought that the Matrix DVD, with its commentary
and its extra features, being priced at about $16 back in 1999 spurred a
*lot* of DVD player sales.

At the time that jackass George Lucas wasn't selling his movies on DVD at all.

Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at September 18, 2017 10:18 PM (6FqZa)"

I didn't know that. I was very into Laser Discs in the 90s and very late into DVD. But then I spent the Clinton years mostly not watching Hollywood TV or movies so much, too many were politically left, and so I got into anime movies and TV where even if they were political I'd not notice as it wasn't my politics. Thus subtitled Japanese LDs like BGC and KOR.

387 Don't waste your time on CNN's "The Reagan Show", either.

Historian Craig Shirley: "Only Democrats and liberals and teleprompter readers are interviewed for this waste of a film. They all trash Reagan. ...CNN charges that the whole Reagan presidency was a show. That is quite a damning accusation. Struggling in its attempts to undo the latest presidential election, we see here CNN trying to undo elections where, respectively, 44 and 49 states voted for one man."

389 "369 Agreed. I have a large collection of cantata and other vocal music by everyone from Bach to Richard Strauss. Absolutely beautiful. "

Probably one of the most beautiful Strauss songs "Beim Schlafengehen" sung by Kiri Te Kanawa. Anyone familiar with the movie "The Year of Living Dangerously" will remember this.

Willowed from the O/T because it is worth mentioning over and over:

387 111 OT: Is this "Vietnam" thing worth watching? Or is it typical Ken Burns?
.

In all of his PBS docs, Burns limits himself to a very minimal number of sources, which tends to skew the perspective (his Civil War series benefited immensely from Shelby Foote's even-handed narrative). I do not know what he used for a source, but I can say with confidence that one cannot get a true history of the Vietnam conflict without reading multiple accounts. I have read 3 overviews: Vietnam, a History (Karnow), the 10000 Day War (Maclear) and Vietnam at War (Davidson). They all have different perspectives, influenced in one way or another by the authors' personal opinions.

397 You're welcome. I like to listen to that before going to sleep. Very peaceful. The other three of Strauss' "Four Last Songs" are lovely also. Kirk Te Kanawa's recorded performance is the most beautiful, I think.
