Update to Last Story: Xavier Beccerra Turned Over a Fake Server to Investigators

I... completely missed this. It's in Luke Rosiak's article, but my brain put the words together to say Imran Awan provided the fake server image to the police.

But it wasn't Imran Awan. It was Xavier Beccerra, former US Representative, current California AG.

From The American Thinker, quoting Luke Rosiak's piece and commenting on it:

California's illegal alien-supporting attorney general, Xavier Becerra, has been curiously silent about that fake server he handed over to cops to obstruct their Imran Awan investigation, according to a new report from the Daily Caller. The broader scandal was outlined in this piece by Thomas Lifson yesterday.

Becerra's role is worth noting because he is considered top Democratic talent, a Democratic Party star, with many Democratic leadership positions, including a seat on the House Ways and Means committee, chairmanship of the House Democratic Caucus (now at the center of the Imran Awan secret server scandal) and lately a post as the California state attorney general, where he is leading the state's effort to stop President Trump from ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals executive order.

He shows a pattern as one gamy player, not the least because of his fake server role in the House server scandal associated with the Awan Pakistani tech family and former Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

According to the Daily Caller News Foundation:

On Jan. 24, 2017, Becerra vacated his congressional seat to become California's attorney general. "He wanted to wipe his server, and we [a 'senior official'] brought to his attention it was under investigation. The light-off was we asked for an image of the server, and they deliberately turned over a fake server," the senior official said.

A fake server? Wouldn't that take some serious planning? How long and how much effort would it take to construct fake server? What kind of information, then, was on the real server, the one former congressional I.T. aide Imran Awan made off with and maybe handed over to hostile intelligence sources for big money? Why would Becerra hand over a fake server instead of angrily get to the bottom of what could easily be called a betrayal of the House Democratic Caucus, which Becerra led, by bad actors?

And more to the point, why is he clamming up, even as he stays noisily in the public view?

If you want answers, don't fear: Jake Tapper may be pressured into maybe mentioning something about this on his Twitter feed, to the delight of his subRight Gimp fanbois.

Thanks to @comradearthur for pointing this out.

50 Democrats lie to congress ... never matters. Fast and Furious, Holder lied, two years later he corrected his testimony. Nothing happens as they give guns to cartels, or Lynch covers a couple billion in drug money laundering by HSBC ... they just keep doing it ... at worst it gets a little coverage.

So we take the house, senate, WH, governorships, ... but the deep state crooked bureaucracy still acts like the mob is running the show.

Maybe it just takes a little time. This is not "criminalizing politics" as Dershowitz calls it (as he conflates Trump/Russia with Hillary real crimes). It is using political office for high crimes, and dirty cops covering it up, and a seditious/treasonous bureaucracy "resisting".

95 And now we know part of why DWS was all-in on breaking every damned rule and norm she could to get Hillary elected--this was all supposed to go away on January 20, 2017.

And this is what makes the Sessions recusal so damned damaging--that dumb fuck didn't just take himself and the DOJ out of one investigation, he damned near took them out of the whole game altogether!!

How many months have we wasted on the Russia bullshit while they've been working to cover this up?

98 It seems that for a long time now, we have erred on the side of engaging in blind trust because of politically correct considerations, and it seems to have failed in a number of cases. It may not all result in 'workplace violence', but still, we tried this to see if we would be met with gratitude, and goodwill, and it doesn't seem to be the case.

Maybe we should consider being as xenophobic as the rest of the world, until we figure out where we went wrong.

Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at September 14, 2017 02:01 PM (/qEW2)

99 What strikes me about the whole thing is the absolutely charming civility of the investigation ... they asked for a copy of the server ? What happened to the midnight raid to seize the servers that we have seen in other cases ?

I've noticed this in other cases, too.

Sometimes Democrats are so confident that they even refuse to turn things over, and nothing happens to them.

I have a hypothesis similar to that, only in reverse. It's that we don't have (many) supervillians and Blofeld-wannabes because the actual smart would-be criminals know how to get rich (or whatever) more or less within the law, have lawyers, and are generally careful enough.

Unless your motivation is "break the law" or "be evil for its own sake," there's generally enough incentive to stay on the straight and narrow (broadly defined) if you just want money.

That may be changing, however.

Walker survived politically, but the groups of citizens that formed to help him were treated brutally by law enforcement sicced on them by the dems - their homes were raided in the middle of the night/early hours of the morning, they were held at gunpoint while their homes were searched, some of them while wearing only what they had worn to bed the night before, property was seized and carted away, etc.

A computer image is a 1's and 0's copy of the data on a hard drive that makes up the data on a computers hard drive. It's the first thing that is done in a computer forensics investigation, technologically speaking.

That image can be produced by Becerra and Co., and then they can monkey with the data on the image. Then they can claim, here's your computer image, swearsies, that's all we have.

But there are ways of determining whether the computer image has been monkeyed with. Dem's are not too smart.

The only logical reason to flee "potential US dictator hell" in favor of unspecified commie hell is if (A) you hold a certainty that it's coming, (B) will be worse for general life, and/or (C) have reason to believe you're a special target. Because otherwise... dictatorships can be survived, and believing "PEOPLE WILL COME AND KILL ME OMG" if you don't believe said people will be the PC Police speaks to either an inflated self-importance or delusion about what dictatorship in this country would be like.

Frankly, I don't think the "I'm doomed, specifically" rationale casts their "doom is coming generally" belief in a good light. Their judgment is suspect.

Posted by: Jen the original at September 14, 2017 02:15 PM (/Qs0S)

The image is basically a digital "photograph" of the server.

If I were to "image" my computer, I would be essentially copying everything on it on to another hard drive.

So, say, if my hard drive was on its way out, I'd buy a new hard drive, image the whole machine over to the new drive, and pick up where I left off.

It's kind of an antiquated term, I think, from the Symantec Ghost days before SCCM and all of that. But in context, I think what the FBI wanted was a complete copy of the server's database (whether that was direct attach hard drives, a SAN, a NAS, or whatever else they used)

I have to imagine that a forensic exam would reveal the inconsistencies with time stamps no matter how good you were at being a hacker / unethical IT guy.

Because DBMS and Microsoft Server time stamps are not usually modifiable like that without trying to hack in to the software itself.

But I don't know, I've never tried to do anything like that, because why would I? Maybe it's easier than I think.

246 "Me too, what would a fake server look like?"

The "image" being discussed would be a copy of the filesystem on the server's disk(s). Including copies of all files contained within the filesystem.

Investigators would be able to mount that image on another machine and go through and individually examine the files stored on the original server. Scan for key words and dates, etc.

If installed on suitable hardware, the disk image could then be booted from, so that the investigators could assess whether any unusual processes were active, malware which would be doing things like running an encrypted backchannel for nonpublic data out to the Internet.

Your parallel is not bad. I have seen it argued that it was not necessarily just the conquest of Carthage but rather getting control of Egypt (not for gold, but the ability to grow food for the empire) that really kicked off the whole deal.

Plus, there was always the eastern threat of the Persians/Parthians in the later Roman period. There was a threat, just distant. Not to mention the various barbarian tribes swarming into the Gaulish/Germanic regions which were much more immediate.

Leftists/liberals HAVE to ban things. A day without a ban is like a day with global warming. At the very least, if they can't ban something on a given day, they can mandate something else as a consolation prize.

There's something in the leftist psyche that torments them when they have the feeling that someone, somewhere is doing something HE decided to do, without being forced.

274 My last employer used those "compostable" utensils in the cafeterias. They worked fine with one notable exception. They literally melted in hot liquids. Not just a little bit. Stick a spoon in your hot cocoa for 30 seconds and pull out a stick with no scoop.
Posted by: bonhomme

Here in the SF Bay Area, many cities now have anti-plastic laws already on the books, so all the restaurants had to use "green" containers for takeout food.

Many of the Chinese restaurants switched to these pseudo-plastic "compostable" clamshell-style flat containers to hold the Chinese food for takeout orders.

Result?

The hot oils in the food just melted the containers most of the time, and the food became a scrambled mess of Kung Pao Chicken and melted pieces of some mystery industrial material. AND it leaks all over your bag/carseat/clothes.

It was and remains a complete disaster. The anti-plastic laws destroyed many food businesses for this very reason.

As a consequence, a lot of Asian restaurants here now just ignore the law and have gone back to real plastic, to everyone's great relief. So far, the "plastic police" have looked the other way, because non-white usually get a free pass when ignoring laws.

I think that would work better, but would require a lot of foresight. I don't know how I'd set up two mirrored servers that weren't really mirrored though. I'm sure its possible... but would you be able to hide the fact that all packets were being sent to TWO servers not just the one? I don't know.

That's beyond my area of expertise for sure. I suspect it would be possible and I suspect it would be really hard for the FBI to know about it. And it would give plausible deniability -- "oh you wanted BOTH servers images? My bad!"

But again... lots of foresight.

Way easier to have a legit server for legit business, then run your illegal stuff separately... but I have no idea what s on these servers that's so bad it needs to be hidden from the FBI.

If it's emails or something, then no -- no way to really hide that if the FBI knows the email address in question.

If its documents or pictures or something else, yeah, that's probably hideable fairly easily in a dual server set up.

Posted by: rickb223 at September 14, 2017 02:43 PM (8oSoU)

325 IF you're smart, when you set up a server you do a snapshot image of the configuration as installed, in case the thing blows up later and you need to reinstall.

Then you do backups, but you periodically (no less than monthly if possible) do a full disk image so that you're not restoring from some time when dinosaurs walked the Earth. You have to be able to restore from a complete image in order to be back up within half a sane window of time. Small businesses whose boxen aren't too busy might get away with just doing a full disk image once a week and skipping the rest.

So it's entirely possible Becarra's crew just gave them a very old disk image.

335 Then you do backups, but you periodically (no less than monthly if possible) do a full disk image so that you're not restoring from some time when dinosaurs walked the Earth. You have to be able to restore from a complete image in order to be back up within half a sane window of time. Small businesses whose boxen aren't too busy might get away with just doing a full disk image once a week and skipping the rest.

So it's entirely possible Becarra's crew just gave them a very old disk image.

I s'pose it could have been an old image, but that wouldn't be called "fake" I dont think (it is the media after all so who knows). The FBI would just say, "hey, guys, this image is from 2002. We need the current one" and you could say "oh, shit my bad. I thought it was odd we were handing over a Tape."

Right, like no matter what you did you'd have gaps or some kind of discrepancy in the logs.

At least as far as I know.

But maybe they just did a shit job and the FBI realized what they were doing immediately.

Like, say the took the correct image, loaded it up in a virtual machine, deleted whatever they needed to, then backed that up and sent that out.

It would be doomed to fail, and any real IT person would know it would be obvious what they'd done, but maybe we're giving too much credit to the IT prowess of the Pakistanis and people at the DNC.

347 99 What strikes me about the whole thing is the absolutely charming civility of the investigation ... they asked for a copy of the server ? What happened to the midnight raid to seize the servers that we have seen in other cases ?

I've noticed this in other cases, too.

358 My reading on this is that they (Cali AG) didn't submit the image of the server in question, they submitted the image of a similar server. The investigative authorities figured this out since the records they have from other evidence does not match the filenames/dates/hash data that they were expecting.

Yeah, totes illegal. Obstruction of justice is obvious in this case (IMHO).

Posted by: Lizzy at September 14, 2017 02:44 PM (W+vEI)

(Not exactly. Usually a sequential record IDs column are what is known as a primary key, which is used as a base value for finding OTHER data records in the database. If they deleted some records, all the db admins would have to do is reindex the primary key (AFAIK) and that should avoid the pesky problem of missing records.)
-----------------------------------------------
Right, like no matter what you did you'd have gaps or some kind of discrepancy in the logs.
(Depends on the type of log you are looking at but yeah.)

At least as far as I know.

But maybe they just did a shit job and the FBI realized what they were doing immediately.
(You are probably spot on with this assessment.)

Like, say the took the correct image, loaded it up in a virtual machine, deleted whatever they needed to, then backed that up and sent that out.
(From a forensics standpoint, that wouldn't work since system binary dates and other variables would point to a 'later boot date')

It would be doomed to fail, and any real IT person would know it would be obvious what they'd done, but maybe we're giving too much credit to the IT prowess of the Pakistanis and people at the DNC.
