I've always thought that it had to be strange to be a minor prophet like Hezekiah. You're working and then God tells you 'Go to the King and say such and such.' So you do and ... that's it. You know that they must have kept expecting another call from Elohim but nope, thank you for your service and see you later.

And the cops are too overwhelmed to even pick up the known perps for questioning. The suggested solution? Um, don't let your wimminfolk go out after sunset. Yes, seriously. Not a happy theme but an incredibly effective work of art. The dejected pose of the model is eloquent: sorrow, possibly exhaustion, fear for the future. What makes the painting for me is Rembrandt's use of color and tone. The earth tones of the cavern where Jeremiah has taken refuge contrasts strongly, heartbreakingly, with the splendor of the few objects he was able to salvage and which no longer have a proper place.
I wonder if there is a ray of hope in the dark cave because there will be continuity beginning with these few salvaged items. I don't know if I'm reading too much into the work. Posted by: JTB at September 15, 2017 09:44 AM (V+03K) 54

To say that Rembrandt is a major influence on my art and my views on art comes off as presumptuous but my God the man knew how to make the beautiful.
I researched Rembrandt's life extensively. Funny thing: religious art in Holland wasn't especially popular during his lifetime and Rembrandt himself didn't lead (and wasn't known for) an especially devout, Christian life. He got in trouble with religious authorities for living with Hendrickje Stoffels after his wife Saskia died. He liked to drink and have a good time. Most of the money he made came from private portraits and public commissions. I think Rembrandt made his famous religious paintings and etchings for his own sake, partly because it filled a spiritual need and partly because the themes of Christian artwork are so challenging and vast that no artist worthy of the name can resist them. Hopefully we are not witnessing the destruction of the world's civil "Jerusalem" ... America that recognizes God above government when it comes to individual rights. I haven't given it a lot of thought and am no OT scholar -- Jerusalem clearly a different significance for Jews than just a center for Israel's government. But there are still some good parallels to the decline and fall of the America the founders had established -- a place to worship their Christian faith as they saw fit. (while keeping the federal government limited so there would be no king or pope taking centralized control) DC has fallen but I'm not ready to lament just yet ... we need an Ezekiel or Daniel? or someone to rebuild the faith ... We would need someone to bolster the faithful and start reclaiming the unfaithful. It would be a lone voice in the wilderness, going against every other tongue to speak Truth at a time when too many believe there is no truth. It would be a thankless job indeed, subject to persecution, rejection and violence, perhaps even from those who should be their allies.
In short, we need a prophet of God. I told you this was never really in our hands. But God willing, that doesn't mean it has to end badly. In light of this latest jihadi terror attack in the UK, it really is time for the US to declare that the UK government is fundamentally unserious about quelling Islamic terrorism. They can't and won't take the necessary steps to ensure public safety.
Issue a formal advisory by the State Department against travel to the UK by American citizens. Make clear it may well be a permanent measure. Put all UK nationals on the strict scrutiny list for US entry. The Brits would go absolutely ape over this blow to the "special relationship". But they hate Trump anyway and have made it clear he's unwelcome there. So there's little to lose. And it would be a clear demarcating line to draw. Sadly, with the jihadi-friendly attitude emanating from Mr. McMaster's Mansion, we won't see any such commonsense steps from the administration. "We are withdrawing the invitation to her to serve as a Visiting Fellow - and the perceived honor that it implies to some people..." Did they really just say that being invited as a Visiting Fellow is really no big deal? Nothing worth putting on your resume? "The UK is our oldest ally."
An ally in what modern, meaningful sense? A military ally? The modern UK is militarily negligible. They disarmed to pay for their welfare state. The Royal Navy is now just a coast guard with Trident missiles. They're too weak even to mount a transatlantic peacetime relief effort to assist their own nationals in the Caribbean. An intelligence ally? MI-5 and MI-6 are demonstrably unfit for purpose. They leak like sieves. They've traditionally been rife with moles and incompetents. Note that it was a former Brit intelligence officer who took the ridiculous "dodgy dossier" prank as real and actionable. A diplomatic ally? When last did Whitehall really stick out their own necks to defend a thorny policy decision by the USA? "Any mass transit is susceptible to terror attacks, and they don't always come from the Allah Ackbar set." Lordy be. I scarcely know what to say. Artists would use contemporary costumes to dress ancient people for a variety of reasons. One was to appeal the their contemporary audience. Ancient costumes and settings tend to separate the viewer from the viewed. In a religious work, you especially want the viewer to have a personal experience, so you make it as relate-able as possible.
Another reason was the artist just didn't know what the true costuming or setting would look like, so they used what they knew. It didn't matter in the end, as long as the message was clear and the rules of style were followed. Posted by: Kris at September 15, 2017 10:21 AM (nwqNw) 227

Per this Bloomberg article the terms of his visit didn't change, just the title.
"We invited Chelsea Manning to spend a day at the Kennedy School," he wrote. "On that basis, we also named Chelsea Manning a Visiting Fellow. We did not intend to honor her in any way or to endorse any of her words or deeds, as we do not honor or endorse any Fellow." Elmendorf apologized to Manning and to "many concerned people" he said he had heard from "for not recognizing upfront the full implications of our original invitation." Manning is still invited to spend a day at the school and speak to students, though without the visiting fellow title, he wrote. https://twitter.com/business/status/908664979586473984 Posted by: Lizzy at September 15, 2017 10:24 AM (W+vEI) 242

"It's a very delicate balancing act because while we try to make sure that they were protected from the chariots and the other things that were going on, we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well, and we work very hard to keep that balance and to put ourselves in the best position to de-escalate." You mean the hair metal posers who robbed their girlfriends makeup and wardrobe and then sat around singing gay songs about the chicks whose wardrobe and makeup they raided?
Glam Rock started in the UK and was a distinctively UK thing, with T-Rex, The Sweet, Bowie, etc. etc. rebelling against/fucking with what the record execs and producers were trying to move as product. There was the homo/androgeny side of it with some, others were taking that angle to wind people up. The Sweet in particular deliberately went Full Retard trying to be edgy on that score and performed their pop-writing writers' songs as hard as possible until they got creative freedom. Glam metalers took the wrong lesson from that. Should have been "play everything you have to perform as hard as you can", instead became "steal metal because it's hard, dress like a girl". Welcome one of your newest fellow citizens. Let's say just for the sake of discussion that this is a hypothetical scenario: 46 year old woman. Gets pregnant. No father listed on birth certificate. Unemployed, gets no prenatal care, presents to hospital in labor, baby born slightly premature and very small size. Has Down syndrome. Has significant medical abnormalities. Will probably be hospitalized for weeks to months in intensive care. May need major surgery. Mother speaks not a word of English. Immigration status? Who knows, not allowed to ask. Mom on Medicaid. Baby on Medicaid. Where is the responsibility of this woman who is old enough to know better? Where is the responsibility of the father who gets his pleasure with no skin in the game? Where is the responsibility of this mother's nation of origin who outsourced her dependency onto us? Where is the concern from our politicians for the taxpayers, the hardworking citizens of this country who are going to pay for this child's medical care for years to come? Where is a simple thank you America, for being kind hearted and generous. But no, the Dreamers have a dream. Screw the taxpayer and his/her dreams. Screw the future of the taxpayer's child and his/her dreams. This woman and her child are entitled to the sweat of your brow, comrade! Posted by: Muldoon at September 15, 2017 10:48 AM (wPiJc) 339

"I get the law does it's own thing, but yeah, the cop straight up murdered the dude. "
Our system says that the prosecution has to prove murder beyond a reasonable doubt. Murder includes intent to kill, because without intent it's just an unfortunate work accident. The Judge didn't exactly rule that he lacked criminal intent; but he did rule that the Prosecution failed to show conclusively that he DID have criminal intent. In the American System, that means acquittal. Posted by: Tom Servo at September 15, 2017 10:54 AM (k1TUh) 353

Could it have been the defendant's or his attorney's idea? Don't know how law in MO works but I think I've heard of cases where the defendant can choose between a jury trial and bench (just the judge) trial. In cases where the defendant isn't likely to get much sympathy from ordinary folks who would sit on a jury, the defendant or his attorney will often go with a bench trial instead. "Neither stayed at a Holiday Inn, or a lawyer, but who's brilliant idea was it to have no jury?"
As per the US Constitution, every defendant in a felony case has the right to request a bench trial, i.e. a trial before a Judge only. Defendants who think they can make a sympathetic case for themselves will always ask for a jury trial, since Judges are thought to be less sentimental and more inclined to follow the actual law. (not saying that always happens, of course) A Defendant who thinks that the general public is going to be biased against him (Like this one) will just about always be advised to choose a bench trial. "North Charleston, SC, which is kind of a crap hole had the cop do a
traffic stop, dude does a runner and cop shoots him in the back and kills him." The Slager incident? Far more complicated than that. Traffic stop showed dude had open warrants. Dude did a runner. Officer pursued and caught up to him. Dude then physically fought with the cop. Cop deployed Taser. Fired it. Didn't stop dude, who took off running again. Taser was jerked from the cop's grasp due to barbs and wires being tangled up with dude. Cop says he perceived this (incorrectly) in the heat of the moment as dude grabbing and getting control of his Taser, which is a serious thing and is a use-of-force escalation step. Cop draws sidearm and lethally shoots fleeing dude in back. Cop then realizes Taser isn't on the dude after all. Goes back, picks up Taser. Takes it over and drops it beside where dude fell. Plenty of blame to go round on both sides on that one. Posted by: torquewrench at September 15, 2017 10:59 AM (ujwCG) Posted by: Mr Aspirin Factory at September 15, 2017 10:59 AM (89T5c) 371

Posted by: fixerupper at September 15, 2017 10:52 AM (8XRCm) I'm having a hard time understanding how the planting of the gun is not sufficient evidence to show he had no business shoving his weapon inside a stopped vehicle and plugging said perp full of holes. The law is often its own worst enemy. Common sense often has little room inside courtrooms, and I get that. If some lawyer wants to explain why what this is does not meet the criteria for murder, go ahead. I'll tune said lawyer out after about 30 seconds. Because there's the criminal "justice" system, and then there's common sense. They don't always go together. I live in STL suburbs, & I am (blush) an atty these last 37 yrs.
Two minor observations only. 1) I'm surprised Judge Wilson announced this verdict on a Friday. Wow. Everybody KNEW this would be an NG verdict. So, I thought it would probably be announced on a Monday morning-- preferably a Monday morning with a bad thunderstorm expected in the evening. Instead, we now have a weekend, with pleasant weather, to see what comes next. 2) There wasn't enough evidence that the def planted the gun. I believe he did, but so what? You wouldn't be able to make a submissible case on tampering with evidence. A judge would direct out that charge on a pre-trial motion. The prosecutor did NOT just "swing for the fences," i.e., by charging Murder instead of the more readily provable lesser offense, as one poster above suggested. Both J. Wilson & the former (elected) Circuit Attorney who decided to charge Shockley are white, btw. Posted by: mnw at September 15, 2017 11:01 AM (YiCkI) 379

"I had a local police officer say he was there to keep the criminals from being killed by citizens. Alrighty, then."
Even though I wonder if he understood what he was saying, he had a very good point. Our law enforcement system doesn't really exist to impose true "justice" - that would be impossible. Our system exists to create enough of an impression of justice so that the general public doesn't feel that their only viable option is to band together and begin taking violent revenge for offenses against them. This is what happens in countries where law enforcement breaks down and become hopelessly corrupt, and it's never pretty. Old time Sicily is a good case study of how a system like that usually works out. Posted by: Tom Servo at September 15, 2017 11:15 AM (k1TUh) 421

When someone decides to start a physical fight with a cop instead of peaceably submitting to a legitimate arrest, they bear some responsibility if things then go sideways during and after said fight. The jury in the Slager case saw the damning video you're talking about, saw it a bunch of times, and asked to have it replayed. But then after considering that in the context of all of the other evidence and testimony, the jurors were not able to agree to convict on Murder One. This is the part that no one seems to voice or grasp - in theory, there would be no splitting of families because if the kids are here illegally, so are the damn parents. Send them all back together. Boom, problem solved re: "splitting up families." --- So, an illegal immigrant with children comes to the US and is committing a crime by their very presence. It is unethical to punish or deport them. A US citizen with children commits a non-violent crime, is put in jail, and their children are put in foster care. They are punished, their family is split up and it's accepted as ethical. Why is it OK to punish a tax payer and a citizen, and break up their home, but it is NOT OK to punish someone who is not a tax payer and a citizen? Limeys have ID'd the bomb suspect. Let me guess, no motive, no ties to any group. Just a random act

Thanks for the update, VIA. Glad there was nothing of note. My dad has to go periodically for the same reason.

"This is what bothers me fundamentally. The relationship of citizen to state has morphed from master to slave in a broad range of areas and I don't like it. Not one bit."
If you go back just a little more than 100 years in this country, the average person would have seen a Sheriff or a Deputy once in a great while, unless they had done something seriously wrong. But it was relatively easy and common to live your life while having little to no contact with any law enforcement types. This morning, on a 10 minute drive, I noted 3 police cars. That's normal for any 10 minute drive I take, and I live in a pretty peaceful town. Posted by: Tom Servo at September 15, 2017 11:36 AM (k1TUh) 519

If the Indians advance, expect Chief Wahoo to become an issue.
My guess is he's just going to disappear for the post season. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at September 15, 2017 11:40 AM (39g3+) 522
RE: true anecdote about Indian mascots & FSU Seminoles:
American Indian Movement (AIM, remember them?) once demanded that Florida State drop the Seminoles name because...demeaning. FSU responded: No problem, if that's what the Seminole Tribal Council wants. Seminole Tribal Council to AIM: FU! Talk to us first next time. We have had an enormously advantageous arrangement with Florida State for close to 100 years. We don't consider a handsome young brave from our tribe galloping around the field on his horse to BE demeaning. And we get millions of dollars in free advertising for our casino & air boat rides too. Those two enterprises are our principal sources of revenue. Plus we get a boatload of full scholarships. Did we mention F Off already? Posted by: mnw at September 15, 2017 11:48 AM (YiCkI) 523

I am an MD also. I refuse to learn Spanish. I spent 8 years learning medicine to treat you, the least you can do is learn a little bit of English so you can speak to me. They think that paying some coyote their life savings to smuggle them into this country entitles them to free housing, free food, free healthcare, and you damn well better learn their language if you want to speak to them.
Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at September 15, 2017 11:16 AM (BoMuO) ***** I can manage a little bit of self-taught Spanish (out of necessity) but have a general policy of meeting people at the level at which they are willing to meet me. For those not willing to even try a little English or make an effort to communicate I find that I have a sudden case of foreign language amnesia. Powerful painting. Even though his face is somewhat turned away, you feel the impact of his despair.
I used to think Jeremiah was a bit of a whiner...but now I get it. He kept warning people & being ignored, and destruction followed. Awful way to live. Posted by: Gumdrop Gorilla at September 15, 2017 12:31 PM (VHwfF) 526
No, it's someone accepting the premise and using the language of the enemies of Western Civ. And you defend them. This is why conservatives suck. And also why you continue to lose.
Posted by: JoeyJoJo at September 15, 2017 01:33 PM (X+q7f) So you think Jews should use BC and AD because otherwise they are accepting the premise and using the language of the enemies of Western Civ. Cool. Retarded, but cool. Posted by: Alcoholic Asshole Shut In at September 15, 2017 01:50 PM (CPk08) 527
I find his paintings very boring in reproduction, but the originals can be very nice if you can see them in person.
