I visited Spain a couple years ago - beautiful country and the people we met were friendly.
There are reminders all over the parts of Spain that we saw - reminders of the civil war. Reminders of other wars too, there was a church in Barcelona that had been torched at some point in the past, and they repaired the church but never covered up the scorch marks inside the building - the better to remember.
There are many bullet-riddled walls that mark where battles were fought. The painting "Guernica" is in Madrid and memorializes a brutal attack on an innocent village.
I think the Spanish are rightly afraid of any group that comes to town preaching mob violence as antifa does.

The difference in Spain is that the bullet-riddled walls have historical markers attached to them, and are part of the itinerary of tour buses. I will add that the tour guides seem to blame all the historical bad stuff of the 20th century on Franco and the natiionalists, and the fact that the communists/outsiders lost the civil war. Spain is not my country so it's impossible for me to say, but what would Spain have looked like it if the communists had won the Spanish Civil War?
My personal opinion is that things would have gone from bad to worse and stayed there. Communism destroys everything it touches.

They do, but the left may have learned the wrong, strategic lessons. Antifa is nothing new in Catalonia and was supposed to have been part of the Catalan nationalist movement, no idea what it is now.
It has its Spanish roots in the Communists' smearing of the Anarchists during the Civil War as being in league with the Italian Fascists, but I have no idea if there is any real continuity there.

There was a time when the state bar would look very closely indeed at one of their licensed members -- an "officer of the court" expected to uphold the norms of the justice system -- who had crashed a car under circumstances strongly suggestive of DUI, and then left the scene without waiting to speak with police.

Myrtle Beach never went in for that Spring Break thing. They used to be death on any alcohol out on the beach. They are a little more lax now not bothering you as long as you drink out of cups and don't have visible bottles or cans, but better not get visibly drunk. You will get a ride to the local hoosegow.

My personal opinion is that things would have gone from bad to worse and stayed there. Communism destroys everything it touches.
If the Communists would have won, Hitler would have invaded Spain and taken it, sealing off the Western Med and maybe changed the course of the war.
Franco was SUPPOSED to come into WWII on Hitler's side (ostensibly allies), but Franco was really only worried about stabilizing Spain, and was also not a raving anti-Semite. He thought Hitler was nuts and really didn't want any part of the War.

I think what killed the Pavilion was the rocketing property values at the beach. The property was just worth too much for it to be dedicated to an amusement park. Most of those kinds of things have moved out to highway 17.

Eh, give him time. It took me several years of having cable to realize "I don't like any of this. This is so stupid... Why am I paying for this???". I consciously realized it was causing me more annoyance than entertainment. That's the key moment.

Spain treated escaped POW very poorly until the start of 1944. Portugal acted more as a transportation conduit for escaped POWs.

Not Ireland. The Allied POWs were quickly returned to Britain. The Irish did not hold on to Allied forces, and were quietly very cooperative with Britain against the few Axis forces or spies that made it to Ireland.

When I was really young the older locals still would complain that there were dances held for Italian POWs locally while local boys were being killed.
The POWs were being used to harvest crops here. Some of them swore if they could they would have gone back home and screamed "give up, we CAN'T beat them"

What trade war? We finished a solid second place in a trade war with China from about 1999-2010. Millions of American manufacturing jobs disappeared along with over 60,000 American factories.
We exported a huge proportion of our middle class to China for what exactly in return? So that they could prop up North Korea and by extension, Iran?

The thinking may be that she can make personal insults to him, and he won't be able to respond because it would look racist.
But Trump is talented at cutting people off at the knees (Rubio, Hillary) in ways that *don't* involve attacking anyone in a way that has to do with whatever politically correct demographic they belong to.
I can picture him mocking her school lunch program and making her look stupid, in a way that will not be off putting.

It made everyone, no matter their background, hate the black lady who
was running it. It also made everyone really angry.
My brother has a friend who's part time job is an usher at Boston Garden (most of us still call it that) who's been through that. It's caused most of them to ask only to work the Bruin's games. He lucked out since he's been there since the new place opened so he's got seniority.
He says highlights of Celtics games are breaking up fights when a girlfriend runs into the wife of the player she's banging and then getting your ass chewed out by the supervisor for letting them bump into each other. To him, the NBA is NOT fantastic.

I'm fairly well informed on the stellar treatment Axis POWs received here, more curious about treatment of Allied interned personnel, in neutral states.
And I still find it very curious about the harsh conditions for Allied internees in Switzerland. Can't see the point of that.

The problem with AA is that they have a "one size fits all" program, and while it corresponds to a lot of cases, doesn't correspond with all of them.
Just to give an obvious counterexample, say a mother has her baby kidnapped, so she turns to substance abuse.
AA would tell her, "You are addicted to alcohol and your life has become unmanageable! You have behave sinfully in your relationships and you must make a moral reckoning of your life and be reconciled to those you have wronged. And do not neglect the fellowship of the meetings".
Horseshit. If her baby were restored to her, she'd give it up like that. Their insistence on "one size fits all" makes them useless for those who don't fit their mold.

Had a landlord in Germany who was captured just after DDay. He said that he sat and watched truck after truck hobby hauling troops and supplies and he knew then it was over. No way Germany could ever produce like that, much less move it.

--Only NHL game I've been to was at the (then) Fleet Center. Friend (who has since passed away, R.I.P.) took me since his seatmate had season tix and was out of town. NYR were visiting during Gretzky's last season. Bruins went up 3-0 but the Rangers scored twice to make it a fun game. Food was good as well.
I'd love to catch another NHL game; it's ridiculously fun to watch in person.

At a place I volunteer, an older volunteer (recently passed) recalled the German POW fruit-picking gangs brought to the AZ citrus ranch she grew up on. And a guy still there, his father worked at a POW camp in TN, among other things was responsible for getting the movies and popcorn for the weekly movie nights. He said his dad recalled life was easy and good for both captives and captors - and obviously much better than being more directly involved in the war.

If he achieves results, on key issues, the WH is his for the asking in 2020. His election was the most pragmatic - not to say desperate - act of the electorate in memory. He certainly had the highest % of voters who were neutral or negative on him, personally, of any winning candidate. Probably ever. He will be judged, by the electoral majority that made him prez, almost certainly entirely on the bottom line. Much as he would in fact judge someone in the business world.
