This was a comment posted in the Rant thread yesterday, and it's one of the best stories I've heard in awhile. So, for those of you who missed it:

Back in the Sixties the thing to do was go out to California and join a hippie Commune. My Judo instructor's cousin did that. One day he gets a call at his Dojo in Houston from the leader of the Hippie commune who says "You have got to come out here and pick up your cousin - she is too crazy for us." My Sensei replied "Yeah, my cousin was always a few cards short of a full deck - OK I'll come pick her up." So he drives out to LA, spends a few days at the commune playing guitar with the hippies then drives his cousin back to Enid OK - drops her off - then drives back to Houston.

You're probably thinking "You senile old fart, why did you tell us that pointless story?"

Oh no, you don't understand: The hippie commune leader was Charles Manson, and the cousin was too crazy to be a member of the Manson family. This was about six weeks before the Tate - LaBianca murders. So up in Enid Oklahoma there is a little old lady who makes the members of the Manson Family look sane.

She fired a second shot that wounded an SS sergeant. It was a signal for other prisoners to stage a riot which was broken up when other guards opened fire at the group using machine guns. Mann died on the spot.

That's how you deal with it. You're going to die anyway. Take as many with you as you can. Eventually it becomes prohibitively expensive and difficult to kill you, and they have to change tactics.

Missus Muldoon pointed out to me this morning something I hadn't considered. Florida has a disproportionately elderly population which may negatively affect ability to endure the storm and its aftermath in place or hamper mobility if fleeing.

Over the years one of our favorite places there has been Cheeca Lodge in Islamorada. It's about four feet or so above sea level, and the predicted storm surge (10-12 feet I'm told) will mean total submersion of Islamorada (and most other keys I'd imagine). Yep. I'm prepping the truck for a post Irma road trip, just in case.

Tools, toiletries, armaments. Plenty of food, water and whisky.

If I have to make the drive, I'm assuming I'll have to sleep at least one night in the truck, as there likely won't be a vacant hotel room anywhere between Houston and Orlando.

Got both the portable generator and Husqvarna 460 Rancher, 20 in. chainsaw in the shop right now, getting tuned n' tweaked to both be 100%, if needed.

At least Step Mom's neighbors are a well armed, grouchy bunch who all cooperate in keeping and eye out on her and her well being.

I was in Florida during hurricane Andrew (at school, hunkered in the dorm - a story in itself). In a previous thread, someone mentioned that traffic clogs appeared to be at the toll plazas. Hopefully that's just because you have to slow down regardless of whether or not they're collecting tolls. Just before Andrew hit, they actually were collecting tolls. Someone called in to the local weather guy (he got somewhat famous for his role during Andrew, had a TV movie and everything), and told him about it. He kinda freaked out, and basically told the powers-that-be to stop collecting the tolls (which they did). So they should have learned their lesson.

I think it was Edward Teller ('father of the H-bomb) who proposed nuking a hurricane. I think the idea was rejected because there was no certainty it would not just make the hurricane stronger.

As do we all. If the models are correct, it looks like South Florida will be taking one for the team, with the storm losing power fairly rapidly as it travels up over the landmass. This is not as bad as it could be, since if it stalled out over the Caribbean it could have gathered up steam again to a Cat 5 plus before making its way up.

My sister's first husband killed himself many years ago, and it just seems that hurt never goes away.
Who can know the heartbreak, sadness and depression that leads someone to this? My late brother in law suffered from seasonal depression, and he had a terrible time coping with winter. He had other problems eating at him, and then one day in January, he ended it all.

I pray that God can comfort you. Times likes this, you wonder how a merciful God can allow such things to happen. Where was He in Michelle's hour of need? I wish I had a better answer. Beyond this life, I hope you can be with her again. Love endures so much, and it will endure this.

Life at times does seem so tragic and hopeless. I hope you can gain comfort that her organs can help others live.

197 Hopefully that's just because you have to slow down regardless of whether or not they're collecting tolls. Just before Andrew hit, they actually were collecting tolls. Someone called in to the local weather guy (he got somewhat famous for his role during Andrew, had a TV movie and everything), and told him about it. He kinda freaked out, and basically told the powers-that-be to stop collecting the tolls (which they did). So they should have learned their lesson.

Dear heavens, I had not thought of that. The few years we lived in Florida, they were emphatic about collecting tolls, and had increased them to an almost untenable rate. It took a lot of screaming and yelling at state reps to at least halt the rise.

It would not surprise me if they were still collecting tolls at all, and that is just awful.

Prayers up for everyone in harm's way, by the way. I would be torn about leaving, but after the comparison between Andrew and Irma, I think I would sit this one out farther away.

I am a very occasional church attendee with no formal religious instruction and know far more about religion and Christianity than any of the many illegals I have met.

297 Hurricane Harvey did so much damage, because it stalled over land, parked just West and South of Houston...which put Houston on the "dirty" NW side of the storm.

So, 50 inches of rain over a three day period. Drowned the town, so to speak.

Conversely, Irma is predicted to maintain a steady, 10+ mph pace up the State, even though holding to Cat 1 force to at least Ocala, and possibly even to the GA line.

But, there won't be nearly the rainfall which inundated Houston and the surrounding areas.

South Florida is going to be a mess, no doubt about it. Central and North Florida are not going to have fun, not at all. But, they've weathered many a Cat 2 or 3 hurricane, and though damaged, quickly recovered.

Was reading something a couple years ago that, if I remember correctly, determined there was about 1/2 - 3/4 " of buffer space between lower H and water. Some theories about disrupting buffer, but decisions stalled when they couldn't determine what would happen to ALL that energy.

322 I just broke out the photoshop and pulled up satellite images of Andrew and Irma. I scaled the images to make cuba an exact match in size, and it looks like Joel's graphic isn't accurate. Yes, Irma is bigger, but not nearly as huge as his graphic makes it look.

323 The thing that surprised me most about this storm is how fast it has been moving.

IIRC large storms in the past moved along between 5 and 10 miles per hour while Irma seems to zip along at 15 mph.

Steven Colbert selling his soul saddens me more than the others.

He taught a Sunday School bible class (don't know that he does anymore). And he did quote from the bible a few times & expressed his belief in God. That was many, many years ago, I guess.

So to see his slide is truly sad to me. I don't know when it happened...I think his current show is what did it.

When I was trying out nics I used Gorilla Guru for awhile. Then, I felt it was too close to Gorilla Pundit. So changed it.
But I think people liked Gorilla Guru better (from responses.)
