Where Did The Public Ever Get the Idea That Their Media Inferiors Hate Their Guts, Hold Them In Contempt, and Wish Them to Die?

Politico proudly tweeted out this political cartoon by an untalented, unfunny asshole who fails at life.

They then un-Tweeted it, though it's still available on their website.

I believe Slate also un-tweeted this:

Honestly, that's my honest guess for why the media isn't showing a ton of rescue pictures or pictures of victims or shelters. My guess is it would be so heavily skewed minority that it would look uncomfortably like Katrina, and only in ways that hurt the (black, Democrat) mayor.

Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at August 30, 2017 03:41 PM (vZvre)

128 Let's unpack everything in that cartoon, shall we?

There's the obvious stuff, of course: Fat White Male Redneck (b/c cowboy hat) Christian in a Confederate flag shirt, being airlifted off a house w/ a Texas "SECEDE" sign on the roof and a "Don't Tread On me" flag in the front yard.

The definition of a Deplorable.

But then there's the more subtle jabs the "cartoonist" includes that are even more insulting.

1) The guy kneeling by the door to the chopper is brown. This being Texas, I assume he's supposed to be Hispanic. That horrible racist Texan being rescued by a brown person! HAH! Take that, bigots!

2) The woman on the roof is rolling her eyes, clearly annoyed w/ her husband's/father's/relative's embarrassing display. Women are SO much smarter than men, you guyz, did you know? SHE knows what's what. Grrrrl powurrrr!

3) More importantly, the one in the rescue basket is the MAN, not the woman. This implies that the man threw himself into the rescue basket as soon as he had a chance instead of stepping aside and letting his wife/daughter/relative go first. He didn't even stick around long enough to help her put on her life jacket.

This is important. See, one of the things we've seen emerge over and over again since Harvey struck is the image of men acting like MEN: carrying women and children to safety; lifting elderly people into boats; spending hours and hours searching for stranded people and bringing them to safety, foregoing sleep. It's been a subtle yet very clear refutation of the "toxic masculinity" trope the poisonous left has seeded into our language, and the left isn't happy about it. This cartoon pushes back against that refutation: "Men are such selfish pigs" is the message.

It's insulting propaganda, pure and simple.

134 Not trying to get religous-y, just using this as an example that came to mind.

In the Book of Mormon, one of the prophets had a symbolic dream where the righteous follow a perilous path to eat fruit from the tree of life (ie the love of God.) Off to the side is a Great and Spacious Building, a huge structure floating without a foundation, which symbolizes the world. It is full of rich, haughty people mocking those partaking of the fruit. Some people become ashamed and leave the tree to try to get to the building, choose the world over the love of God, many of them perish.

To blatantly steal this allegory for my own purposes, the tree's fruit = freedom. The media/hollywood/liberal scolds are all creatures in the great and spacious building. As Ace says in his headline, for those seeking the fruit they Hate Their Guts, Hold Them In Contempt, and Wish Them to Die. And anyone on the right who ashamedly tries to join their ranks, to also mock those seeking freedom, just warning you now that way lies doom and treachery.

168 @Deplorable Male Logic, I say unfavorably because Nagin and Blanco combined their stuttering incompetence and covered each other's rears to blame Bush and FEMA for their own failures.

The problem with Turner is he can't do that. All the surrounding counties and cities had evacuation orders in place. The governor had called in the National Guard and told Houston to evacuate. There were even FB posts saying that Houston city hall was lying about the scope and they were planning for catastrophic flooding but couldn't come up with a good evac plan -- and he and all his minions went on social media to call her a liar and to tell everyone to shelter in place. He has been on record as refusing to accept calls from the governor. This is 100% his failure. I think they can't show the true victims of that decision because they're all black, Hispanic, or poor and none of that blowback will got to Trump. They have to focus on the, like, 25 white people trapped in random, nice-looking subdivisions. That way, they can just imply that all of them deserve it (and there's no blame for the blameless mayor).

Theme: Smug, condescending coastal cosmopolitans have some fun with the benighted flyover hicks who seem to actually think that they can be self-reliant and not depend on the experts in government.

This is a well known principle. C. H. Spurgeon made the same point in one of his sermons. (can't find it). God ordains means as well as ends. He may ordain for you to get from A to B in the rain, yet remain dry. And the means may be an umbrella, instead of some miracle.

I noticed that, too. And none of the Coasties are women, which is just beyond the pale.

Another thing I noticed but neglected to mention: the story of Harvey has been the story of hundreds of INDIVIDUALS with personal watercraft going out into the flood waters to carry out rescue operations. Yes, they've coordinated w/ officials, and yes, the National Guard and other government agencies have been doing tremendous work in the search and rescue efforts. But the STORIES are about people helping each other; neighbors literally helping neighbors.

This cartoon ignores all of that and pretends government is the only savior in this situation.

Depraved, truly.

Lefties don't like anything about America, but they especially don't like the tradition of private citizens voluntarily helping each other out.

What they *say* they don't like is the fact that we get complacent about how "good" we are as a people, when we see heartwarming scenes like "Grandma on a Jet-Ski". Supposedly that complacency makes us ignore poverty, homelessness, etc., the rest of the time.

But what they *actually* don't like is the fact that it shows how self-reliant we are and how little we depend on the state.

In the meantime, Ryan/Tillerson and Gary Cohn all love them some antifa 'freedom fighters" and publicly trash Trump. The globalist plan to destroy us from within seems to be on course. After the SL fiasco some 1000 crooks were convicted.

This is a really great episode.
Random details that stuck out: There is a heavy correlation between these groups and hard drugs. Some get a dopamine boost from a state of total rage. A marxist, when he reaches the end of his twenties, typically will become either a professor or a drug dealer.

Just a side note, with the exception of the city of Fresno proper, you could transplant Fresno County into rural Texas with virtually no culture shock on either side. Even the accents would mesh pretty well.

Plus, Fresno County is one of the few counties in CA that's effectively Shall-Issue when it comes to CCW.

Back in the early days of the internet, I read a proposal for restructuring church tithing along the lines of multi-level marketing. That is, if you went out and brought in new tithers, a portion of their tithe would be kicked back to you. So if you established a good 'downline', you'd get rich.

The guy obviously meant it as an anti-MLM parody, but it sounded so realistic, I was afraid someone might actually try it.

The thing is, Harvey so far has resulted in much fewer deaths than Sandy or Katrina. Texas seems to have done a good job in dealing with it. So whatever their conception of government and their attitude towards one another, it seems to work.

He SKIPPED Houston. LOL. Went to Corpus and Austin. Gave all the power (and money) to Abbott. Screwed "Let'em drown for photos and my career" Turner. The mayor and city council held a very high profile and virtue signaling meeting this am. Too late Sylvester. No skim money on fed bucks for Houston's mayor.

453 Alexander Hamilton was the Father of that Long Blue Line, the US Coast Guard:

"A few armed vessels, judiciously stationed at the entrances of our ports, might at a small expense be made useful sentinels of the laws."--Federalist Paper #12 (27 November 1787)

He didn't share this cartoonist's cartoonish contempt for the people:

"After all, Sir, we must submit to this idea, that the true principle of a republic is, that the people should choose whom they please to govern them."

That's why he argued the case for the Constitution in the newspapers. That's why he outlawed Obama's One-Man Treaty. And that's why he said this:

"The fabric of American empire ought to rest on the solid basis of THE CONSENT OF THE PEOPLE. The streams of national power ought to flow from that pure, original fountain of all legitimate authority."

They all bought $300 seats to watch "Hamilton"--and learned nothing.

457 Once again, the media engages in the false-choice thinking that either you are a Socialist that wants the government in charge of 100% of the nation's GDP or you are simply an idiot anarchist.

Besides, if we look closely, as the police and firefighters are overwhelmed (it's not for their lack of effort; let's face facts, their plates are overflowing), the REAL First Responders (I hate that term) are in fact the citizens, the victims of this disaster, who have turned to civil society for help. For examples, I point to all sorts of organizations, and informal gatherings like the Cajun Navy and the Texas Navy. And just plain old neighbors helping neighbors.
