I put this in the other flood thread, but I'll repeat it here because several of our commenters were concerned about the photo of the elderly people sitting in water up to their waists at the flooded TX nursing home.
The photo of the people in the nursing home was taken by the owner of the nursing home. She had tried calling local cops and 911 for help, but she could not get through to anyone in her area, so she sent the pic to her daughter in FL, asking her to try and contact someone to send help to the nursing home before the people there drowned. The daughter and her husband in FL both tried calling local TX authorities, but they also could not get through to anyone. So the daughter decided to Tweet the photo and the nursing home address, on the chance that someone in TX might see it and be able to send help to the nursing home. The pic went viral, and the TX authorities saw it and sent a helicopter to the nursing home and picked up all the residents, transferring many of them to a hospital. Reportedly, all the people who lived in the flooded nursing home are now safe. Posted by: TrivialPursuer at August 27, 2017 07:39 PM (QbiyL) 18

Also, Dickinson is a fairly small, and poor, town over 30 miles south of Houston. The drainage bayou there cut the I-45 freeway so whatever emergency services exist there were probably tied up with that. Air traffic was non-existent last night as well, probably due to wind, so rescue efforts were slowed by that as well. Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at August 27, 2017 07:55 PM (rp9xB) 70

The reason people don't evacuate in Houston is that they remember the
disaster when they did evacuate. Hundreds of thousands of people were trapped in traffic for days; so long they ran out of gas and couldn't move. You just can't move 4,000,000 people in a few days. If you did where would they stay? There aren't 4,000,000 hotel rooms in the state. People literally died on the road during the evacuation - happened to one of my NASA coworkers. The problem is every storm is different; a giant cat 5 can effectively fizzle out and cause little damage - a simple tropical storm can flood the whole city and cause billions in property damage. Evacuation also raises the problem of "Which way do you go?" If you take the wrong evacuation route you can wind up going right into the mouth of the storm and drowning in your car. Staying at home here is a viable option despite what non Houstonians think. Posted by: An Observation at August 27, 2017 07:55 PM (uusq9) 72

I hope that everyone saw the link in the sidebar last week that showed that "Antifa" was what Vladimir Lenin used in his "international" conference Lenin's conference was about spreading his brand of murderous communism world wide. He called everyone who wasn't with him a "Fascist" and the "antifa" flag, logo, name, everything is EXACTLY THE SAME as the current antifa.
Look up Communist International and just read the wiki entry. Their goal was "The International intended to fight "by all available means, including armed force, for the overthrow of the international bourgeoisie and for the creation of an international Soviet republic as a transition stage to the complete abolition of the State." THIS is antifa. We're watching a burgeoning communist revolution replete with demonizing the government and everyone else "fascists." Posted by: dagny at August 27, 2017 08:05 PM (wZuWv) 108

Addicks reservoir water level was at 95 feet earlier today, the highest level in some time. We got a warning from the Ft. Bend County Office of Emergency Management stating that if the water level rose to 104 feet (maximum level for the dam), flooding would occur as far west as SH 99 (Grand Parkway).
It is an earthen dam that showed signs of stress as early as 2008 and has been studied by the COE since then. Posted by: jett rink at August 27, 2017 08:06 PM (e6rUj) 110

I put this in the other flood thread, but I'll
repeat it here because several of our commenters were concerned about the photo of the elderly people sitting in water up to their waists at the flooded TX nursing home. The "so what" of the thuggery Dave highlights here is the de facto suspension of 1st amendment rights to speech and assembly in certain parts of America.
And the elected public officials in these places are not just passively contributing to this (which would be appalling enough). They're making it happen. They're demonizing, slandering, and agitating in effect against perfectly legit and legal free speech and assembly. The DOJ hasn't done anything on behalf of actual civil rights for a long time. Yeah yeah lots on their plate - but is DOJ gonna get around to defending constitutional rights any time soon? If they need help, they oughta sing out. If it looks too haaaarrrd to do, I think there are still capable people left in the country who understand the constitution and could replace or supplement those who can't hack it. Weirddave, I think you can do better. Me, too. But the only reason why I think so is because, just when Weirddave is at the level when he's posting gems and I think that his work just can't get any better, it does. He continually improves on his best, which is already quite good. It's inspiring, really. We can all do better. See above. Those people are just standing up for equality and against bigotry. As evidenced by their signs emblazoned with slogans advocating equality and being against bigotry, I take it. But I don't see any such signs, so debates on sincerity are moot. "The president speaks for himself," Tillerson told "Fox News Sunday" when asked if the president represents American values. Time to jettison him and bring in the 'stache Tillerson's response is the latest signs of division of how the Charlottesville violence has divided the GOP and Trump's inner circle. Cookie Puss is an ice cream cake character created by Carvel in the 1970s as an expansion of its line of freshly made exclusive products, along with Hug-Me Bear and Fudgie the Whale. According to Carvel's backstory for the character, Cookie Puss is a space alien who was born on planet Birthday. His original name was "Celestial Person," but the initials "C.P." later came to stand for "Cookie Puss." In his television commercials, Cookie Puss has the ability to fly, though he requires a saucer-shaped spacecraft for interplanetary travel. During the 1980s Cookie Puss was repurposed to serve as a cake for St Patrick's Day, dubbed "Cookie O'Puss". Posted by: Hairyback Guy at August 27, 2017 08:30 PM (5VlCp) 205

You're correct. I was oversimplifying -- the red-over-black is communist-anarchist, black-over-red is some other type of anarchist, and the black-yellow, black-green, and I forget what all else. They're all destroyers. Their existence has less of an October Revolution feel and more of a Ragnarok aura to it. Posted by: FireHorse at August 27, 2017 08:39 PM (zkGZ8) 251
Re Cohn, you are talking about NYC feelings compared to the rest of the country.
You might as well be considering the feelings of the Cossack while the Politburo was putting in place the first 5 year plan. I know. I have upper West Side relatives. And not because he's a Democrat. Sometimes ya gotta be a Democrat to be elected. Bob Lanier was a Democrat and he was great. Confederate monument to unknown soldiers unveiled in Alabama
Security was tight as several hundred people attended the ceremony Sunday in Confederate Veterans Memorial Park in Crenshaw County, Alabama, 55 miles (88 kilometers) south of Montgomery. The monument is surrounded by a black metal fence and flanked by two other monuments. As a red cloth was pulled to reveal it, five cannons were fired. Confederate flags were flown throughout the park and several attendants were dressed in Confederate garb. It occurs to me that good, decent people are found more in places like Texas, Oklahoma, and so on because of the hardships and disaster, there. They learn to help one another and do not forget their mortality. They don't suffer the pervasive moral weakness of other, more paradisal places; the sloth and selfishness.

Gary Cohn is surely smart enough to know the DoJ has taken orders from London, to obey "international banking law" over our own law. DoJ (this says) was going to prosecute individuals at HSBC for money laundering a couple billion in cartel money. But instead Lynch oversaw them only being fined.
Greta says "why does no one ever go to jail", and the answer is fear of "contagion", or threat of contagion from the TooBigToFail or Jail "banksters". TARP was such a threat, but in several cases the certain protected "global banks" demand obedience to international law, and we have surrendered our sovereignty and let the crooks go free. This video clears it up pretty well. The global bank cartel can order US to stand down on prosecution, and we do. They have immunity from our law. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gK3s5j7PgA Posted by: illiniwek at August 27, 2017 08:59 PM (veVl1) 341

The difference between the tight black wearing face covering antifa and the loose white wearing, face covering KKK is who they hate. They're both trying to grab power though violence and threat of violence against people they don't like on flimsy justification based on outlier examples. But the motive and the means? Far less different than any would care to admit.
The constant warning in fantasy applies here. Becoming the thing that they hate. Posted by: DaveM at August 27, 2017 09:04 PM (FNtbC) 372

I wanted to give a shout out to HEB (a big Texas grocery store chain) and their employees. They knew people were going to need survival supplies. My colleague spoke to an HEB store manager last Thursday - he said that 17 trucks of supplies were arriving Friday to their store right before the storm. Many of the stores are open even now during the storm. They didn't defer to the government, they decided to take action before the storm to help knowing that lot's of people were going to be in trouble. Kudos to HEB! The Romans were right. Luxury and indolence were poison to their society. When their old virtues of self-reliance, bravery, and communal loyalty were replaced by hedonism and leisure, they fell and Europe entered a Dark Age.
Actually they fell into hedonism and pleasure, and proceeded to form an empire and rule for another 500 years (1500 if you count the Eastern Roman Empire, which you really should). Be nice if people actually read history instead of relying on a garbled remembrance of something an anti-american British MP wrote back in the 18th century. Carry on... The guy carrying mom and baby to safety reminded me of my first close brush with death as a young mom more than thirty years ago.
We had a Midwestern blizzard going on in our little town and lost power. Hubby and I would have just hunkered down and toughed it out but we had to little boys and no lights, heat or water. Hubby's folks in a nearby city told us to come over for the duration but we needed to get two blocks to the nearest semi- clear road that my FIL could get to with a four wheel drive with chains. We set out with me carrying the baby and hubby the three year old. He had me walk behind him so he could break a trail through snow that was waist deep to him. It was snowing so hard you could hardly breathe. I honestly thought I would not make it and by the time we got to the end he was basically breaking a path and carrying all three of us. It was only two blocks. But man the snow was deep. I told him later I thought that we were all going to die and he just laughed. He didn't think it was all that bad. I've been praying all day for everyone affected by this storm. God bless you and keep you all. Posted by: Lily (formerly fom HotAir now from AoSHQ) at August 27, 2017 09:28 PM (5n2vp) 471

Even the late Republic faced plenty of hardships that kept its rural citizenry strong, including several civil wars, a German invasion, and the Social War. They are sufficiently small in number that each one has been christened with its own unique monicker. I was lucky enough to get a close look at "Incredible Hulk" just after its return from a maintenance interval where the entire airframe had been meticulously gone through. The Coasties in NorCal fly the Aerospatiale Dauphin. Slim, sexy, and small. I always figured that would be a problem in a mass water rescue event like the levees around Sackamanura letting go, or a dam collapse. Posted by: Peaches at August I haven't seen anything about Rockport since Friday night. Rockport is tiny. I only know it exists because of having spent much, much time at nearby Port Aransas. And in 453 by the Vandals, several times during those Ostrogoth / Justinian wars, by the Arabs and - the funniest sacking evar - by Charles V in 1527. Like that guy in the last clip, or the Cajun Navy (love that), folks just jump in from all over. As well as all the regulars: power companies here in Oklahoma went down there; the chainsaw brigades that come out after tornadoes. Yeah, my son's school announced closure through Tuesday and said they would let us know about Wednesday. I'm pretty sure they're going to end up closing the rest of the week. Private school clear on the other side of town (he has special needs which are not served by any schools near here). We *might* be able to get to it by Wednesday, but it's unlikely to be worth the risk.
Son #1 also had a specialist appt in the Medical Center on Monday, which is already canceled, which is fine bc it's not urgent but also annoying because it's testing results we have been waiting for for almost a year, and Son #2 has one on Wednesday. I hope we can go to that one...it is urgent. Posted by: Mrs. Peel at August 27, 2017 10:10 PM (JPRju) 610

Of, and that trucker stuck in the rising water on the feeder road, just how much of a wimp was he? The water was calm, no current evident, and it couldn't have been more than a ten-yard swim to get to the freeway rail. Even if he were a complete non-swimmer, there was probably stuff in the truck cab, maybe cooler, or seat cushions, that would have made an improvised swimming float.

37 Why were they not evacuated?
Conservative Treehouse explains: Although the Governor of Texas advised Houston residents to get out of Dodge, the Mayor of Houston (DEM/POC) used social media on the 25th to tell residents to stay put. Another goober repeated the mayor's advice: Ignore Governor Abbott because LOCAL LEADERS KNOW BEST [all caps in original]. http://tinyurl.com/yat857yj My raging cynicism tells me that the Dems, with the Charlotsville fading into the past and losing effectiveness, needed another crisis to use against Trump. Katrina was effectively used against Bush so why not try it again. Never let a crisis go to waste. This NY/NJ girl loves Texas and Texans.
When my son finished Tech School in northern Texas (?Sheppard AFB maybe) he was on his way to DFW airport with two other young airmen for their very first trip home in months. Damn car they had broke down about a hundred miles from the airport. Got towed to some small town but everything was closed. A woman overheard them on the phone trying to locate a car service and asked them where they needed to go. She brought them back to her trailer for some lemonade and since she didn't drive, arranged for her brother to pick them up and take them all the way to the airport. All three made their flights (with just minutes to spare for one of them!) Everything really is bigger in Texas---especially their hearts! Posted by: IrishEi at August 27, 2017 10:24 PM (HiDrR) 623

A prepper thread? There's an idea! I know a lot about that stuff. All serious preppers should learn how to garden so as to sustain their families after SHTF. My poor family will have to subsist on rosemary and mint, with one cucumber a week for variety.
On a more serious note, this tragic hurricane and flood shows that even the most extensive preps in the world are not proof against Nature. You can prepare for the worst, hope for the best, and leave the rest to God. Posted by: Miss Sippi at August 27, 2017 10:39 PM (5fPhA) 627
