The Contender

contender.jpg

I don't plan on doing this very often, but I struggled through this movie over the course of a week and just simply cannot get past how bad it is.

So, I'm dedicating this week to tearing apart The Contender, the 2000 movie about a female candidate to fill an empty Vice Presidential post in the middle of a Democratic administration.

And yes, it's bad. I mean, really, really bad.

Assumptions

This film is based on so many poor assumptions about how politics works in the United States that it feels like it was written by a foreigner who only knew anything about American politics through some poorly translated editorials from The New York Times.

Let's start at the beginning. The movie doesn't say explicitly, but I'm pretty sure it takes place in 2006. The president (played by Jeff Bridges) says that he's six and a half years into his presidency and the candidate (played by Joan Allen) voted for Clinton's impeachment in the House before she switched parties to win her Senate seat from Ohio (her Senate term ends in about two years). So, the currently sitting VPOTUS dies somewhere between June and August of 2006. You know what else would be beginning right about that time? That's right, both major parties would be beginning their primary seasons. You know what's never mentioned?

That's right, one and a half years before a presidential election where both parties would be looking for new candidates, no one ever mentions the primary. Not once.

So, the Democratic president, who is trying to get a Vice President through a Republican controlled House one and a half years before a general election. That's the basic concept.
Does this movie sound ridiculously stupid yet? Because we're just getting started.

Don't think it can get worse? Pause while I laugh at you

Alright, so we're at the beginning of primary season that no one currently in government seems to have any idea of. If you were a sitting president in this situation, what would you do?

Me? I'd keep the Vice Presidency open for the rest of the term. It's not a fight worth having, the VP doesn't do much of anything, and we've survived a bunch of times without a VP. "The people are worried? Who cares? I've got an administration to run."

Others might say, "Well, we need someone there for whatever reasons." Fine. If you absolutely need to get someone in that post what do you do? The president in this movie is pretty much trying to decide the results of the Democratic primary with his pick. A smart president would have chosen an old party loyalist who would promise to not run for the presidency in the next election. A retired governor who the other party likes. Easy little confirmation leads to nothing vice presidency which leads to a pretty much completely unchanged primary race.

But who does this president choose? A young female Senator (who's totally not Hillary Clinton, guys). Oh yes, you bet that that's the president telling his party who's going to be the nominee in 2008. If the president wants to make that preference known, then great, he can. My question then becomes, "Why on earth would he let a Republican House have any say in that?" He's trying to forge the future of his party and he's giving the other party a say?

Wait? You think the stupid stops there? Let me catch my breath from my continued laughing

The sordid bit is about how the senator and putative Vice President was supposedly in a gang bang in college. This begins to get into how dramatically inert the movie is, but let's deal with the political idiocy first. The senator refuses to answer any questions on the matter, insisting that it's private and has no bearing on how good she'll be in the office (I wonder what she would say of Donald Trump?). Her point is that it would be fine if this came out about a man but women are held to separate standards.

These words were written by the screenwriters immediately after Bill Clinton, a man, got impeached for actions that stemmed from private sexual dealings (the movie's explanation of the senator's vote for impeaching Clinton is silly. Something about adultery without a mention of perjury). I mean, it's not like no sex scandals ever took down up and coming male politicians ever. Ugh…

Before I move on, the dramatic bit. The entire movie is the main character of the film refusing to defend herself. She's passive in the face of opposition. How on earth is that dramatically interesting? It's not, by the way.

I see you get this now. Yes, let's show some more dumb.

oldman.jpg

Then the details begin to get incredibly stupid as well.

The ugly Republican congressman played by Gary Oldman says early to the committee privately that he's doing this to save the US from liberalism.

Let me dispel one notion right here: The Republican opposition is not meant to be seen as a pushover fake opposition in any way shape or form. Gary Oldman is portrayed as very shrewd and dedicated to taking out Joan Allen as potential VP. He has a personal motive (the President heavily implies that Oldman was the Republican nominee for president against him at some point), and he's dead set on putting someone else in the Vice-Presidency.

So, anyway, back to saving American from liberalism (an almost exact quote, by the way). It seems like a reasonable thing for a Republican member of the House with a say on the composition of the Democratic administration to say. It's never pursued. Instead they go with the sex angle exclusively.

When the senator finally decides to defend herself (with about 20 minutes of the movie left), she lists her positions: strong on crime and defense (she'd go nowhere in today's Democratic Party, but it's the Republicans who've lurched to the extreme…*eyeroll*), pro-choice (expected from a female Democrat), and wants to take all guns out of all homes in America.

Wait…what?!?!?

Yes, she actually says that. Here's the direct quote: "I stand for seeing every gun taken out of every home. Period."

How on earth would anyone expect a Republican controlled body to let this woman be second in line for the presidency? The fact that this is never brought up by anyone else as disqualifying her for the position is flabbergasting.

Well, it's flabbergasting until you realize what The Contender actually is compared to what it wants to be.

Wish-Fulfillment

fantasy unicorn.jpg

Yeah, it's pure fantasy. It's hold on reality is tenuous at best. The equivalent from the right side would be if I wrote a book where someone in the same position with parties reversed said, "I stand for seeing abortion made illegal in every context ever. Period." Maybe it's what many on the right would like, but a Democratic controlled body would never ever let that person through committee. They'd be figuratively dead at that point.

And this is really my problem with political movies in general. At work, my desk is covered in American paraphernalia including a series of historical American flags, state flags (every state I've lived in), the first collection of presidential PEZ dispensers and almost a dozen books about American history, most particularly presidential biographies. When people who don't know me very well strike up conversation with me they almost always talk about the Netflix show House of Cards as though I've obviously seen the whole thing and love it. I haven't.

I've never seen a second of the show because TV and film that tries to get into the weeds of American politics almost always becomes simple wish fulfillment instead of interesting drama surrounded by an accurate representation of how American politics works. You know why? Because politics is terrible, slow, and full of half-wins. Outside of elections, you're looking at murky processes with labyrinthine rules, and old ugly people. To make it sexy, you have to change a lot more than you normally would. I just end up finding it uninteresting.

The fact the The Contender was considered by some upon its release as some sort of accurate look into how American politics work is depressing because it betrays the fact that way too many "smart" people actually don't understand politics at all. (My boy, Roger Ebert, gave this poorly paced, inscrutably motivated, and incredibly undramatic film 4 stars.)

Also, trust us: When Democratic screenwriters write Democratic elected officials saying that they want to rid the US of all guns, and Democrats everywhere cheer it, it totally doesn't mean that they want to take your guns.

One last thing

This is already a little long, but I want to bring in one final quote from the movie. I think that this quote exemplifies everything that's wrong with the Leftist worldview:

"I may be an atheist...but that does not mean I do not go to church; I do go to church. The church I go to is the one that emancipated the slaves... that gave women the right to vote. It gave us every freedom that we hold dear. My church is this very chapel of democracy that we sit in together..."

Government is her church.

Fuck this movie.

38 People don't go to political movies, whether they are left-wing or right-wing. I watch a movie to be entertained or to learn something about the general human condition (eg, Ingmar Bergman's films).

I don't watch a movie so I can be lectured at. I suspect the failure of every anti Iraq War movie ever means that most people don't want to be lectured at either. But of course those movies (like The Contender) aren't made to be profitable, they're virtue signaling.

80 I don't think many people know that "Soylent Green" has one of the most touching goodbye's to a great film star ever put on film, and I tear up a bit whenever I see it.

This was Edward G. Robinson's last movie, and you may recall there is a long death scene, where he is taken into a room and shown beautiful scenes of the world, while a lovely piece of music, "The Death of Aase" by Edward Grieg plays; and then he dies, peacefully. The scene may seem somewhat out of place for that type of movie, but in fact, Robinson knew that he was dying when that scene was filmed, and he did in fact die 2 weeks after filming wrapped up.

So, that scene of Edward G. Robinson's peaceful death was truly the last scene he was ever in; the end of a 56 year long career. I can't think of any of the other great stars who managed to go out that way.

94 Hey everybody.

Was just at Jeffrey Wells' and he's writing about Tarantino's upcoming Manson movie. (I admit his site is where I learned about it to begin with.) Here's what he wrote, so that you don't have to give him the click:

"The Hateful Family"

I've put quotes around the above headline because it came from Variety critic Owen Gleiberman during a back-and-forth we had this morning about Quentin Tarantino's Manson Family movie. The subject was Gleiberman's 7.15 essay about same - "Quentin Tarantino Does Manson? That's News That Should Thrill Cinema Lovers."

The 12th paragraph gets to the nub of it: "Tarantino wants to tell a story about how the age of free love morphed into something horrific; a transformation that still has disturbing implications today. Will he play it straight or Tarantino-ize it? My instinct (or maybe it's just a hope) is that Tarantino can't reduce the Manson story to another of his concoctions. I mean, he can, of course, but it wouldn't feel right, and it wouldn't be inspiring cinema.

HE opinion: As intriguing as this project sounds, Tarantino is incapable of playing it even semi-straight. He's not a docu-dramatist - he's a creator of alternate Quentinworld fantasies. His last three films have mined the past - Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight - and each time he's reimagined and re-dialogued history in order to transform his tales into his own brand of '70s exploitation cinema. Why should QT play his cards any differently with the Manson family?

Gleiberman said this morning that location-wise he wants Tarantino to deliver an exact duplicate of everything we know about the Manson geography (Spahn ranch, Haight-Ashbury, etc.) but "make it feel new."

"Alas, Tarantino is not a realist," I replied. "Never has been, never will be. His Paris neighborhood set in Inglorious Basterds looked exactly like that - a phony sound stage realm. And remember that he reimagined an anti-Semitic, Jew-hunting Nazi Colonel as a witty talk-show showoff who loved to giggle at his own jokes. Remember also that in the same film Tarantino gave a French country farmer the name of "Bob."

And yet, I said, "I want Tarantino to deliver an exact duplicate of the Polanski-Tate murder house" = formerly located at 100050 Cielo Drive but demolished in '94. Designed by Robert Byrd in 1942, built in '44 - French country style, peaked roof, red shingles and white trim, stone fireplaces, paned windows, loft above living room, guest house, pool. And occupied by many famous movie folk - Michele Morgan, Lillian Gish, Henry Fonda, George Chakiris, Cary Grant and Dyan Cannon, Samantha Eggar, Olivia Hussey, Trent Reznor, et. al.

As I reported five years ago, the original Byrd house was torn down in '94 and in its place a grotesque, Uday Hussein-styled McMansion was built. The guy who constructed this nouveau-riche Moorish-Mediterranean monstrosity, called Villa Bella, was producer Jeff Franklin (creator of Full House). The original street number was also erased; the address is now 10066 Cielo Drive.

Wells also posted some crime scene photos from 1969 of (apparently) the Sharon Tate home. OMG, incredibly grisly.

(And, the bold formatting was added by me.)

Given the current reaction, I would say Sorkinism in the left has only grown, arguably becoming the only legitimate outlet of leftist thought. If they are convinced that their loss was due to insufficient Celebrity hectoring, it's Trump 2020. If they actually run George Clooney- yow!

141 128 A guilty pleasure, a movie I should have hated but found oddly compelling, was the movie pi (actually the name was just the greek symbol) I don't know how to describe it without making me sound RENEGADE for even admitting to watching it. This odd man sees numbers and patterns in everything, and they drive him madder and madder, and finally he appears to find some peace by drilling a hole in his head with a power drill, in his bathroom.

All I can say is that after watching that you kind of get a feeling for what it's like to be totally batshit insane. In fact I think it makes you insane and it takes a few days for it to wear off.

166 80 I don't think many people know that "Soylent Green" has one of the most touching goodbye's to a great film star ever put on film, and I tear up a bit whenever I see it.

I don't want to say too much, because: spoilers, but the original House of Cards was extended into a trilogy. House of Cards, To Play the King, and Final Cut. So, twelve episodes total. I believe that the American version (which I watched a lot of because my wife wanted to see it, but cannot stand) drew elements from all three of these four-episode stories.

As much as I love Kevin Spacey as an actor, he cannot hold a candle to Ian Richardson in this particular role.

eh, Logan's Run was Zardoz without a plot and no acting ability. It was absolutely a Sci-Fi New Wave story, and a quite unimaginative one, at that.

Now the pinnacle of pre-Star Wars sci-fi was The Black Hole, which was an attempt to re-do Forbidden Planet. Silent Running is up there too.

Gary Oldman is maybe the greatest character actor of this era. He can play just about any role convincingly.

Oh yeah. "Whitelisting".

After all the allegations of Blacklisting from the 1950's for cooperation with HUAC hearings, a lot of the people that testified for the government were "whitelisted" and really never worked again.

The Party was very strong in Hollywood among the actors, trades, etc. It did sort of die out in the 1960's, but the residue of everything the Communist Party did in Hollywood is with us ....still.
There are all kinds of political hurdles and mazes actors and actresses have to wind through to work consistently.
Oldman shot off his mouth, and the Hollywood Nomenklatura reminded him of who he was.

Nice folks.

304 Dunno if any were ever filmed, but Allen Drury's novels were both interesting and pretty plausible about politics. The plots ventured into the fanciful later, but the basic how-politics-works stuff still seemed pretty real.

And yes, that means minutia and partial victories. The central plot of Advice and Consent was about the confirmation of a Secretary of State. And he made that interesting.

Posted by: Splunge at July 15, 2017 08:55 PM (iMxBJ)

Nah. The worst was probably when the Academy butt-fucked Scorsese in 1980 so they could give Redford a Best Director Oscar for the thoroughly forgettable Ordinary People in his first time behind the camera.

And Scorsese made it worse by spending the next 26 years chasing the Best Director award, especially after the Academy turned right around and butt-fucked him all over again in '90 by giving the award to Kevin Costner for HIS first film, over the clearly superior Goodfellas.

I'm appalled that people seem to think it's an uplifting story. It's fucking HORROR FILM. The heartless succubus Jenny keeps showing up and destroying Forrest's life before abandoning him, again and again. Eventually going back to him for good once he's rich, dumping off her spawn on Forrest, and presumably infecting him with AIDS, which in that time frame was a death sentence.

The look on Forrest's face in the last scene isn't serenity, it's the look of a thoroughly broken man.

I think a great topic for the Movie Thread is exactly this:

Movies that you thought were great/were considered great, but you don't ever want to see again or don't care if you see again.

Schindler's List, Forrest Gump, stuff like that.

Or movies that you have to watch more than once to fully appreciate them. Like "Bad Santa."

565 Thread's about gone, but somebody brought up "Enemy Mine" - wanna know why there the boy he has to save is slaving away in a mine at the end, when he is rescued? It wasn't in the original script, but when the writer showed it to the execs, they said "we don't get it. There's no enemy mine anywhere in this script."

He said "no, no, it's a English phrase, it's a literary thing."

The execs said "no, no, we don't get it. Rewrite this and make sure you put an Enemy Mine into it."

And there it is.

"Fuck this movie."
That movie was 2000. And it's still playing non-stop. I keep hitting the Reset button but it doesn't do anything.

568 Re: Magnificent Seven remake

It's good. I was hesitant because I didn't know how they would make Denzel believable as the leader of the group considering the time period they were in. The script writers did an excellent job.

Agreed. The original is one of my favorite movies and I really enjoyed this one, as well. That Chris Pratt... I really like him. I might actually rent Passengers. Might.

569 305 -- selling options on books can be very lucrative. Rumor has it that Donald Westlake lived on his option money.
Actually having your book made into a movie is not necessarily the wonderful thing you might think it is. From what authors told me during my bookselling years, the actual writer is low man on the totem pole. Max Allan Collins wrote the novel "Purgatory Road", and was allowed on set exactly one time. He wasn't allowed any where near Tom Banks because it would have broken Hanks' concentration. Once you sell your book to Hollywood, Hollywood can do whatever the hell it wants with it. (Just ask Sara Paretsky, who was so appalled by what Hollywood did to her character V.I. Warshawski, she refused to sell a second book to the studio.)

Hey, now. That is actually my favorite version of A Christmas Carol.

572 John Cusak was in a good political movie about an aide to a Congressman that pretty much does anything and casts anyone aside to get to the top.

574 I do not want to see any of these Planet of the Apes movies if I'm supposed to cheer for the apes slaughtering and conquering humanity.

575 Thank you thank you! Finally someone else who has seen The Contender and finds it as excruciating as I did. Although I must admit it WAS pretty funny. I haven't seen it in over 10 years and please don't make me watch it again but my 2 favorite bits were where the guy (an aid of some kind?) practically genuflects before the portrait of John Kennedy and when the female military officer salutes The Candidate and says "we need you" or some such and I believe I detected a tear in her eye. Hahaha! My husband was somewhat of the liberal persuasion but I looked over at him and he made the hand motion indicating "gag me with a spoon."
