The Contender
Assumptions
This film is based on so many poor assumptions about how politics works in the United States that it feels like it was written by a foreigner who only knew anything about American politics through some poorly translated editorials from The New York Times. Let's start at the beginning. The movie doesn't say explicitly, but I'm pretty sure it takes place in 2006. The president (played by Jeff Bridges) says that he's six and a half years into his presidency and the candidate (played by Joan Allen) voted for Clinton's impeachment in the House before she switched parties to win her Senate seat from Ohio (her Senate term ends in about two years). So, the currently sitting VPOTUS dies somewhere between June and August of 2006. You know what else would be beginning right about that time? That's right, both major parties would be beginning their primary seasons. You know what's never mentioned? That's right, one and a half years before a presidential election where both parties would be looking for new candidates, no one ever mentions the primary. Not once. So, the Democratic president, who is trying to get a Vice President through a Republican controlled House one and a half years before a general election. That's the basic concept.Does this movie sound ridiculously stupid yet? Because we're just getting started. Don't think it can get worse? Pause while I laugh at you Alright, so we're at the beginning of primary season that no one currently in government seems to have any idea of. If you were a sitting president in this situation, what would you do? Me? I'd keep the Vice Presidency open for the rest of the term. It's not a fight worth having, the VP doesn't do much of anything, and we've survived a bunch of times without a VP. "The people are worried? Who cares? I've got an administration to run." Others might say, "Well, we need someone there for whatever reasons." Fine. If you absolutely need to get someone in that post what do you do? The president in this movie is pretty much trying to decide the results of the Democratic primary with his pick. A smart president would have chosen an old party loyalist who would promise to not run for the presidency in the next election. A retired governor who the other party likes. Easy little confirmation leads to nothing vice presidency which leads to a pretty much completely unchanged primary race. But who does this president choose? A young female Senator (who's totally not Hillary Clinton, guys). Oh yes, you bet that that's the president telling his party who's going to be the nominee in 2008. If the president wants to make that preference known, then great, he can. My question then becomes, "Why on earth would he let a Republican House have any say in that?" He's trying to forge the future of his party and he's giving the other party a say?
Wait? You think the stupid stops there? Let me catch my breath from my continued laughing The sordid bit is about how the senator and putative Vice President was supposedly in a gang bang in college. This begins to get into how dramatically inert the movie is, but let's deal with the political idiocy first. The senator refuses to answer any questions on the matter, insisting that it's private and has no bearing on how good she'll be in the office (I wonder what she would say of Donald Trump?). Her point is that it would be fine if this came out about a man but women are held to separate standards. These words were written by the screenwriters immediately after Bill Clinton, a man, got impeached for actions that stemmed from private sexual dealings (the movie's explanation of the senator's vote for impeaching Clinton is silly. Something about adultery without a mention of perjury). I mean, it's not like no sex scandals ever took down up and coming male politicians ever. Ugh… Before I move on, the dramatic bit. The entire movie is the main character of the film refusing to defend herself. She's passive in the face of opposition. How on earth is that dramatically interesting? It's not, by the way.
I see you get this now. Yes, let's show some more dumb.
Wish-Fulfillment
One last thing This is already a little long, but I want to bring in one final quote from the movie. I think that this quote exemplifies everything that's wrong with the Leftist worldview: "I may be an atheist...but that does not mean I do not go to church; I do go to church. The church I go to is the one that emancipated the slaves... that gave women the right to vote. It gave us every freedom that we hold dear. My church is this very chapel of democracy that we sit in together..." Government is her church. Fuck this movie.

I don't know what Affleck was basing his acting character on but from my experience, it wasn't an autistic person. It was so off putting I had to watch it in bits. He sounded like he was doing a bad audition , reading lines for the first time. And whatsherface was at her most unattractive that I've seen.

This was Edward G. Robinson's last movie, and you may recall there is a long death scene, where he is taken into a room and shown beautiful scenes of the world, while a lovely piece of music, "The Death of Aase" by Edward Grieg plays; and then he dies, peacefully. The scene may seem somewhat out of place for that type of movie, but in fact, Robinson knew that he was dying when that scene was filmed, and he did in fact die 2 weeks after filming wrapped up.
So, that scene of Edward G. Robinson's peaceful death was truly the last scene he was ever in; the end of a 56 year long career. I can't think of any of the other great stars who managed to go out that way.

Was just at Jeffrey Wells' and he's writing about Tarantino's upcoming Manson movie. (I admit his site is where I learned about it to begin with.) Here's what he wrote, so that you don't have to give him the click:
"The Hateful Family"
I've put quotes around the above headline because it came from Variety critic Owen Gleiberman during a back-and-forth we had this morning about Quentin Tarantino's Manson Family movie. The subject was Gleiberman's 7.15 essay about same - "Quentin Tarantino Does Manson? That's News That Should Thrill Cinema Lovers."
The 12th paragraph gets to the nub of it: "Tarantino wants to tell a story about how the age of free love morphed into something horrific; a transformation that still has disturbing implications today. Will he play it straight or Tarantino-ize it? My instinct (or maybe it's just a hope) is that Tarantino can't reduce the Manson story to another of his concoctions. I mean, he can, of course, but it wouldn't feel right, and it wouldn't be inspiring cinema.
HE opinion: As intriguing as this project sounds, Tarantino is incapable of playing it even semi-straight. He's not a docu-dramatist - he's a creator of alternate Quentinworld fantasies. His last three films have mined the past - Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight - and each time he's reimagined and re-dialogued history in order to transform his tales into his own brand of '70s exploitation cinema. Why should QT play his cards any differently with the Manson family?

And occupied by many famous movie folk - Michele Morgan, Lillian Gish, Henry Fonda, George Chakiris, Cary Grant and Dyan Cannon, Samantha Eggar, Olivia Hussey, Trent Reznor, et. al.
As I reported five years ago, the original Byrd house was torn down in '94 and in its place a grotesque, Uday Hussein-styled McMansion was built. The guy who constructed this nouveau-riche Moorish-Mediterranean monstrosity, called Villa Bella, was producer Jeff Franklin (creator of Full House). The original street number was also erased; the address is now 10066 Cielo Drive.
Wells also posted some crime scene photos from 1969 of (apparently) the Sharon Tate home. OMG, incredibly grisly.

This was Edward G. Robinson's last movie, and you may recall there is a long death scene, where he is taken into a room and shown beautiful scenes of the world, while a lovely piece of music, "The Death of Aase" by Edward Grieg plays; and then he dies, peacefully. The scene may seem somewhat out of place for that type of movie, but in fact, Robinson knew that he was dying when that scene was filmed, and he did in fact die 2 weeks after filming wrapped up.
So, that scene of Edward G. Robinson's peaceful death was truly the last scene he was ever in; the end of a 56 year long career. I can't think of any of the other great stars who managed to go out that way.

Problem with Comet TV is that they edit the crap out of the movies. Watched Flash Gordon the other night (truly authentic 1980s cheese!) and at commercial breaks it had some huge 30 sec to perhaps minutes gaps during the transitions - they were in one scene, exiting/escaping, then after the commercial, they were well into the next scene.

I don't want to say too much, because: spoilers, but the original House of Cards was extended into a trilogy. House of Cards, To Play the King, and Final Cut. So, twelve episodes total. I believe that the American version (which I watched a lot of because my wife wanted to see it, but cannot stand) drew elements from all three of these four-episode stories.
As much as I love Kevin Spacey as an actor, he cannot hold a candle to Ian Richardson in this particular role.

Spent the Pet Thread driving back from San Antonio, where Finn was Best of Winners for a point today.
I-10 is such a pain in the ass that we came back on Alt-90 through Seguin, Gonzales, Shiner, Halletsville and Eagle Lake. Not much longer and much more relaxing and scenic a drive.

eh, Logan's Run was Zardoz without a plot and no acting ability. It was absolutely a Sci-Fi New Wave story, and a quite unimaginative one, at that.
Now the pinnacle of pre-Star Wars sci-fi was The Black Hole, which was an attempt to re-do Forbidden Planet. Silent Running is up there too.

It's actually a good example of Cargo Cult-ing. The left has been very effective at using movies to promote their viewpoints but giving subtle-but-difficult decisions that they show working out their way.
In this case, it's like they figure if they show a "principled" character, she can spew her communist manifesto and the audience will say "Yeah! That's all great stuff!"

The Party was very strong in Hollywood among the actors, trades, etc. It did sort of die out in the 1960's, but the residue of everything the Communist Party did in Hollywood is with us ....still.
There are all kinds of political hurdles and mazes actors and actresses have to wind through to work consistently.
Oldman shot off his mouth, and the Hollywood Nomenklatura reminded him of who he was.

Speaking of Rock Hudson, I hope MeTV will start running "McMillan and Wife" again soon.
He and Susan Saint James had some of the best on-screen chemistry of just about any couple. And then throw in Rhoda's mom, Nancy Walker, as the wisecracking housekeeper. She had chemistry with both of to, in a different way.
I always wondered if Susan Saint James knew where that mouth had likely been and what it was doing when she'd kiss him.

I remember reading or hearing them talk. Back in the day, some tabloid, or the equivalent, some celebrity gossip rag was going to burn Rock Hudson's faggotry.
Rock Hudson was such a big star that his people and the Hollywood big shots cut a deal to keep it quiet. In return they gave the rag juicy dirt on 5 other stars. They ruined 5 other people just to save Rock.

Nah. The worst was probably when the Academy butt-fucked Scorsese in 1980 so they could give Redford a Best Director Oscar for the thoroughly forgettable Ordinary People in his first time behind the camera.
And Scorsese made it worse by spending the next 26 years chasing the Best Director award, especially after the Academy turned right around and butt-fucked him all over again in '90 by giving the award to Kevin Costner for HIS first film, over the clearly superior Goodfellas.

Hey, "Cat" actually has a pretty uplifting ending. And Burl Ives is just amazing as Big Daddy.
I like Tennessee Williams a lot, I confess. (Streetcar is the one I actually like the least, I think) I think probably the most darkly freakish psycho-sexual plot line ever was "Suddenly Last Summer", another great Liz Taylor showcase.

He wakes up in an American hospital in Occupied Germany in 1950 not remembering anything since being at a meeting for the final go away for Operation Overlord. I'm appalled that people seem to think it's an uplifting story. It's fucking HORROR FILM. The heartless succubus Jenny keeps showing up and destroying Forrest's life before abandoning him, again and again. Eventually going back to him for good once he's rich, dumping off her spawn on Forrest, and presumably infecting him with AIDS, which in that time frame was a death sentence.
The look on Forrest's face in the last scene isn't serenity, it's the look of a thoroughly broken man.

The only part of 36 hours that made no sense was the Eva Marie Saint character. The Germans are trying to pull off this very elaborate and for them critical ruse and they use someone from a concentration camp.

Awwww, c'mon. Titanic has one of the greatest scenes ever. Leo DiCap suffers a horrible death from hypothermia. Then the hot chick says "I'll never let you go"......before prying his frozen hands off the raft and flinging his body out into the depths.

Streaming Netflix doesn't even have ratings anymore, just a "thumbs up/down." The ratings were very useful, helped me decide what to pick. I've heard they ditched the ratings system in response to the abysmal ratings that Amy Schumer's "The Leather Special" was getting.

Actually having your book made into a movie is not necessarily the wonderful thing you might think it is. From what authors told me during my bookselling years, the actual writer is low man on the totem pole. Max Allan Collins wrote the novel "Purgatory Road", and was allowed on set exactly one time. He wasn't allowed any where near Tom Banks because it would have broken Hanks' concentration. Once you sell your book to Hollywood, Hollywood can do whatever the hell it wants with it. (Just ask Sara Paretsky, who was so appalled by what Hollywood did to her character V.I. Warshawski, she refused to sell a second book to the studio.)
