Overnight Open Thread (15 Jul 2017)

You know you have a problem if even Snopes is slapping you around. The lies of Donald Trump's critics, and how they shape his many personas.

The entire episode is a remarkable example of something bordering on collective hallucination, most likely brought on by confirmation bias. Here hundreds of thousands of people - including professional journalists working for influential news organizations, and a chat show host with more than three million nightly viewers - literally heard Trump say something he never said, in most cases probably because it confirmed a pre-existing image of the President as a poorly read, culturally ignorant buffoon.

Jupiter

Why Jupiter's Great Red Spot refuses to die.

California

Will California ever thrive again? No. Not while it is under the thumb of Democrats.

Game Of Thrones

Alright, the wait is over and tomorrow night, the next season of GoT begins. Here's a handy recap of seasons 1 thru 6.

Parking

I don't have a problem with parking. It's the time stuck in traffic because dumbass drivers keep causing wrecks. The average Bostonian spends 53 hours per year searching for parking. NY was #1 at 107 hours.

Future War

What the largest battle of the decade says about the future of war. A near peer opponent would be a bit different.

Consequences

Teen who blasted 'F-k Tha Police' at cop's funeral booted from apartment. Good.

Vangelis

One of my favorite film scores.

Teachers Gone Wild

Man, even the not hawt teachers are participating. Jail for music teacher, 54, who blames male student, 17, for tricking her into having sex 'like a used car saleman'. So when does the MSM start the 'rape culture' discussion for public school teachers like they do for colleges and male students?

Voter De-registrations

Colorado's 3,400 vote de-registrations scaring Democrats. I wonder if it is occurring elsewhere?

Dumbassery

Dear God, when will this BS end? Feminist magazine explains why you must not gender your pets. Seriously?

Supposedly, when cats knock things off a counter, it's because they want attention. As soon as they break something, they get their attention.

The cure for this is to put cups in cup holders that stick to the counter. Cat gets bored, problem solved.

Also... yeah, play with you cat and they won't be bored and do things you don't like

Anyway, Betadyne Douche is trying to get xis/xer/xit's hands free by sawing the ropes against the buckle of the tuck harness xe/xhe/xit is wearing when one of the hoods starts trying to make time with xe/xer/xit.

Should Betadyne Douche:

As someone who has bombed several relationships, alienated my best friend and ended up divorced, I would not presume to tell you how to live your life.

But sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself for the things that have gone wrong. You can't carry it around like a ball and chain around your ankle. My older sister did that, and it made her very unhappy. She finally found a man, who was also her friend, who is so patient and kind to her, and she is happier now at 64 than she has been in a long time.

Everybody has their own pain to live with, and want someone to brighten their lives. If you carry around that deadweight of the past failures, nobody really wants you around; everybody carries around something that they can't let go. And that is my bit of pop wisdom to pass on tonight.

And sometimes it's hard to appear to be happy when your heart feels like a stone in your chest.

Cool fact: in that final offensive the Russians had 3000 artillery pieces per kilometer of front. Since a gun is a couple of meters wide, that meant they had so many guns they could have lined them up six deep in front of their advancing army.

You could think of the Great Red Spot as similar to sunspots on the surface of the sun; places where the magnetic field is variable and allows a lot of plasma to escape. Sunspots on the surface of the Sun are actually quite large, could easily swallow any of the planets. I think the Great Red Spot is actually larger than Earth.

The Earth's core is probably a lot of molten iron and heavier uranic elements. The uranic elements are heavy and so probably sunk to the core when the Earth was formed. That's probably what keeps the core hot and molten and magenetic. With out a hot molten core, we end up a dead world like Mars, which has a cold core, and no big B-field to shield if from the solar wind, and its atmosphere is stripped away.

That would be fission, not fusion. Yes, there is a site in Africa where a uranium deposit ran sporadically as a nuclear reactor for millions of years. Like a big old percolator.

Incidentally, back in 2010 or so, they estimated, from borehole data on geoneutrinos, that there's about 20 TW of fission going on in Earth's crust and mantle. It's about half of the total internal heat release of the Earth.

297 Hey, Virtual Moron family:

Out-of-town son's wife, after thinking her health problems might mean she couldn't conceive, got pregnant. Joyous, but still concerning.

Got a text tonight from Son - DiL went in the hospital with problems - 2nd incident in 24 hrs - and now the docs are talking about inducing, more than a month before due date.

This is our second chance at grand-parenthood. We lost Daughter's grandchild to a miscarriage over a decade ago. It's frankly frightening to think this grandson is threatened. I know one-month-early preemies have a good shot nowadays, but, it's still, frankly, utterly terrifying.

My own prayer-fu is weak after decades of distressing, frustrating "no" answers to prayers on seemed-to-me most-important matters, and being more a "realist" than a mystic, I rarely ask for prayers for our own terrible circumstances. Discouragement is not easy to rise above.

But, what do I know? Maybe the Powers That Be will hear the shout-out of good Morons, better than the angels respond to my whiny, faithless begging. Prayers welcomed, for our daughter-in-law's health, and our son's spirits, and, of course, our grandson-in-process.

I'll let you know how things work out.

313 Well, that was a TOTAL bust.

I got to the karaoke bar...this is the one I worked at until six months ago...and there's music playing, but no DJ.

The DJ is helping behind the bar. I ask if there will be any singers tonight, and I'm told the bar is too busy, so they don't know when, or if, they'll start karaoke.

Mind you, this is a bar with karaoke in their flippin' name. Apparently, the current DJ only DJ's when they feel like it. Otherwise, it's iTunes on shuffle.

The nearest karaoke joint besides them is an hour's drive, and I'm too broke to go.

So, the week continues its pattern of general suckitude.

315 I remember reading "A Wrinkle in Time" as a kid. I was supposed to like it, but I didn't really. Too much estrogen in that book.

If Oprah has a prominent role, I can't help but think about the permanent vertical wrinkle in her giant ass as a plot device. I don't want to think that, I just can't help it. It's her fault.

How interesting that once again, a story that is, let's face it, quintessentially white, has the caucasians replaced, and it's been done so insistently that one suspects that's the only reason for the production. You can see the priority is social engineering and not storytelling, and that's why it's going to be a bomb. Nobody can identify with it.

318 Reading about the Mosul offense I got a curious idea... would it be possible to completely blot out the sun over a city? Say, with hundreds of large blimps high above the city? Or something.

The idea would be to leave the enemy in pitch darkness for a week or more. Their eyesight would become adjusted to cave-like conditions.. so at the moment of invasion open up the sky canopy and your foes would be fucking blinded and easy to defeat.

Is this feasible?

Well a good builder can make a decent instrument out of an old park bench, so just because its not accepted "tonewood" doesn't mean the build quality isn't there. I used some leftover cherry I had after building a desk to make a pair of classical guitars. They're beautiful and loud as hell.

In the mid 1800's Antonio Torres, basically the Stradivari of classical guitar, built a guitar with a complete paper mache body with a spruce top just to prove that the spruce top on the guitar was where the real tone came from, and it supposedly sounded great. It still exists, just not playable because of the age.

Two of my kids were born a month early. One was induced and one popped out at a donut shop!
No problems whatsoever. Not so much as an extra day in the hospital.

To be sure, they were over 6 pounds and a lot of 8 monthers are smaller than that. But even the tiny ones usually do well with today's great neonatal care.

Anyways, at the very least I hope they manage to get rid of the individual and business mandates.

And I can't help keep thinking that we really need the Feds to properly define what exactly is and is not "health insurance" and "health benefits". To my mind any amount of expenses beyond 15% of one's annual income is appropriate for health insurance. If a company wants to pay for routine, low cost, care.. great. But don't include it in their insurance plan and deem it a "health benefit". Just codifying those terms into law would be a big help to conservatives pushing back against the bullshit dems spout out about this topic.

Yup. Just like bro-and-sis in Fantastic Four, but they're of different races. WTF? The lesbo black fem companion of Dr Who this season was a pretty sharp companion, but that was always overshadowed by the PC BS.

I'm a long-time fan of the Wrinkle in Time series, but especially the first one. Enjoyed reading it with the Mrs early in our relationship, and years later to kids when they were little. After seeing the trailer, I do not plan to see this remake.

There was a maybe made-for-TV? version several years ago that was pretty well done, although a quick look at iMDB doesn't clue me as to WHICH one it was. My copy is not at hand to check.

I'm, not military, but DNS is "domain name server" and is the computer that resolves named domains into the numerical addresses that the Internet really runs on. I am working in an unfamiliar browser right now, so I don't know how to find the numerical IP address for the HQ so you could enter it directly.

Alternatively, look for a free proxy server. That has allowed me into the HQ when my IP was caught up in a ban.

I just pinged the ace.mu.nu and got the IP address 173.193.14.202 for this thread, but putting it back into Chrome doesn't seem to work. I don't know why, but I think that putting in a dotted quad address bypasses the DNS server entirely if done properly.

382 Well, crap.

When we lived in Chicago, decades ago, our next-door neighbors were Skip Williamson and family.

You might (but probably don't) remember Skip from the underground comix days (Chicago scene). Snappy Sammy Smoot ring a bell? ("Don't wee-wee on your tee-vee.")

I was more into the SF Undergrounds (Crumb, Shelton), but as an eclectic cartoonist myself, of the mighta been variety, I admired Skip's wild but craftsmanlike style, and got to know his oeuvre better after we were acquainted. He was cartoon editor for Playboy at one time, friend of Hefner. He painted, too, many fine, and peculiar works. Wish I'd grabbed one of his canvases back then!

We first got to know them because they had a daughter same age as ours, and soon after we met them they had twin daughters, the same year we had our twin sons. Spent much time together early-on, especially Milady W and Skip's Mrs. (With the kids, of course.)

Skip never quit being a wild and crazy anarchist and self-indulgent character. I'll always remember him passed out on our lawn one night. To his credit, he didn't barf 'til he was on the lawn.

We didn't exactly have a close-chums relationship, but we were friends. Lost track of them, over the years. Heard he & his wife got divorced. After the Internet showed up, periodically, I would do a web search on Skip, but never got an address to send him a hello.

Just checked again tonight, and found out Skip died in March at age 72.

1960s - less with us. RIP, Skip. Hope the vodka and weed in Heaven (or wherever you ended up) is top-shelf.

383 I don't know why, but I think that putting in a dotted quad address bypasses the DNS server entirely if done properly.

DNS translates human readable names into those dotted quad addresses.

385 Yeah, neither the address I found, or the one you quoted takes me anywhere from a second browser window here.

AoSHQ is probably hosted on a name-based virtual host. Many sites would share an IP address if that's the case.

Not privy to Pixy's secrets, but if AoSHQ is on a name-based virtual host, it won't work. With a name based virtual host, the domain name in the HTTP request tells the web server how to process the incoming traffic. So you can have literally hundreds of websites all sharing an IP address.

392 Steve: As someone who spent a lot of time in IT chasing various web access problems in various organizations, it's *probably* an automatic or manual IP range block that just happens to have snatched up Ace.

Tracing them down can be a PITA and I bet it's harder to get your friendly tech support to do it in the military.

Someone in a place where I worked was coordinating AIDS research in an African country known for internet scams, and various ISPs would intermittently block most or all of the country.

I could see Ace getting snatched up in content filters, but as you say those give a message (unless that software dramatically changed recently in your org).

Yes, that's what it is. The IP address goes to a server (maybe a farm of actual physical servers that share the load).

The HTTP request packet must include the actual name of the site, which tells the system which actual site is being requested.

If you just put in the IP address, the browser doesn't send the correct information packet, and it doesn't know what to do with it.

You'll note that a PING responds fine.

Comments were blocked years ago, but I still love reading AOSHQ on my downtime - its easily my fave.

Since this is a smart military blog, are any other users having my problem?
Is there a fix within chrome, I.E. or firefox I can employ?

Looked it up. A workaround that *may* work is to add the name to your "hosts" file. Ie, you would add ace.mu.nu to the hosts file with the IP address.

This way the name resolution should work without going to a DNS server, but allow the browser to properly send the host name in the HTTP request packet as normal.

Whether that would work on Steve's system or not. If it's a clamped down machine, you may not have write access to the hosts file for instance.

And of course, if the actual IP address changes, your hosts file won't be updated.

463 Target depth?
Posted by: SMFH at July 16, 2017 03:50 AM (s5Kql)

Total Depth. Target depth is a thing, but it's not abbreviated as TD. Each stage of a well can have a TD. TD surface hole (where surface casing is set to protect ground water); TD intermediate hole; and TD main hole, which in this case is a horizontal hole.

464 Ah well, close enough.

Posted by: SMFH at July 16, 2017 04:00 AM (s5Kql)

465 Gotcha, AOP.

What is target depth abbreviated as?

Posted by: SMFH at July 16, 2017 04:01 AM (s5Kql)

466
So you put casings around the holes that are going through the same depths as groundwater? That seems very considerate. So it puts the lie to the claims of groundwater contamination, right? Chances are if your groundwater smells like oil it's probably a natural phenomenon.

Usually just described as "target". Unimaginative, I know.

Yes. Also protects the hole from falling apart because of groundwater flowing into it. Around here, we typically set surface casing at around 600 meters; well below the base of any known fresh water aquifers. Deeper formations may be water-saturated, but it's with brine, a fossil ocean.

470 And now I have to go to work. Describe my final samples, and get the paperwork completed, at least that part for which I am responsible.

Night, Horde.

471 Niters, AOP.

SMFH, these people can only tear down. Statues are memorials, not political statements. They are created to last a thousand years. Imagine all of the political upheavals over a thousand years. We would lose every monument and memorial we have if we let the lunatics of each generation tear them down.

Nite AOP, thanks for the lesson in practical geology.

477 One of the things I admire about military personel and "brats" is their ability to make conversation with strangers.

Maybe I am stereotyping but it certainly seems easier for them then for me. I think moving so frequently would contribute to that.

481 The goal is to eliminate all sense of history, so that they control the ability of the next generation to question the approved narrative. It's about power.

485 OK ~ yet another sign of the pending apocalypse:

Formula e racing ~

Yeppers "e" for electric.

A race where you watch really, really quiet cars reach top speeds of (gasp) 140 mph.

Seriously? wtf. It came on FS1 after the event I was watching. I watched 5 minutes because I could not believe what I was seeing. The most boring thing ever. It looked like people racing bumper cars for chrissakes.

I just can't

These truly are the end times.
