Quote II I don't know why Alzheimer's was allowed to steal so much of my father before releasing him into the arms of death. But I know that at his last moment, when he opened his eyes, eyes that had not opened for many, many days, and looked at my mother, he showed us that neither disease nor death can conquer love. MisHum, what a nice Father's Day ONT. That second quote, about Alzheimer's, is so touching.
I've always like that Paul McCartney song. One day in the comment section, the Notorious BFG, Oregon Muse, and I were quoting it at each other. And Jim Gaffigan is never not funny. He gets better with age too (his, not mine necessarily). We saw him a few years ago for a show and our stomachs hurt from laughing so much. Perfect for Father's Day. Joe F., that's exactly how I feel about that song. :-)
I get the impression that at that time (early 1970s), McCartney was so happy about not being solo and having to get everything he wrote and/or did past Lennon and the other Beatles, he hardly cared if people could make sense of a lot of his music. He was just relieved, and determined, to create, perform and release whatever he felt like, period, so long as he liked the sound. Posted by: qdpsteve at June 18, 2017 10:02 PM (eMKNe) 27

I saw a documentary about lions a long time ago, and from,it I,learned that when a new male lion took over a pride, one of the first things he would do would be to go around and kill all the babies. I thought that was rather ghoulish.
I few years later, I married a wonderful woman who already had children. After about a week of dealing with step-kids, I really came to appreciate the wisdom of lions. Posted by: tankdemon at June 18, 2017 10:03 PM (Ci5mR) 30

Alzheimer's is a filthy disease. It cheats not just the person who has it, but their families and friends of precious time. I'm fortunate: neither of my parents had it. But my grandmother did, and it turned her into a vicious harpy who couldn't even recognize her own children, much less her grandchildren. Unfortunately, I'm at an age where the parents of more and more of my friends are having to cope with parents and even siblings with dementia. Not saying that May's is weak work, but I want to see it firsthand before assuming that it's of merit. Time for my annual Father's Day post.
I always preface this with the observation that I understand that not everyone had a wonderful relationship with their father, and there's little to be said about that. My own father was not a perfect human being, but he did the best that he could with what he had at hand, and he was at heart a very fine man. If your own father is still with you, talk to him. On Father's Day, I always recall the lyric from Paul Simon: I know a father He had a son He longed to tell him all the reasons For the things he'd done He came a long way Just to explain He kissed his boy as he lay sleeping Then he turned around and headed home again The annual offering of Chet Atkins, 'I Still Can't Say Goodbye': http://tinyurl.com/y9tkgymu Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at June 18, 2017 10:28 PM (kUfFq) 112

29 -- tankdemon -- it's not just step kids; it's your own kids, too. For the past twenty-five years or so, I have been wondering why there are sixteen-year-old boys walking the face of the Earth. Fifteen, in boys, is scraping the bottom of the barrel. They are nothing more than a walking attitude with a mouth that never quits. Once my middle son's own precious sprout hit that sweet spot of teen age joy, I received frequent phone calls thanking me for not beating him black and blue or simply throwing him out of the house to starve to death. As the saying goes: Grandkids are a parent's best revenge. Your day will come. I just love listening to my kids whine and kvetch about how horrible their kids are and how close to killing them they are. The best part is, the kids know I'm laughing at them.

Kitchen aid Mixmaster. There is no other choice. Buy a gently used one if the price for new is too painful. I assume you are not looking for a stand mixer, because everyone knows that KitchenAid owns that category. But for a hand mixer, go to Amazon and search for Oxo Hand Mixer. $27.97, and it beats many more expensive mixers I've had down the years. The headlight feature seemed silly when I bought it, and now I think it's the best thing ever. Good power, well-designed beaters and control. Love it. Posted by: lurking grandma ------------ Takes a LOT of cherries for that, and a LOT of pitting. This afternoon at sunset I was sitting on the porch. We have a large old sour cherry tree about 25 feet away from the porch. While I was watching, a squirrel scrambled up in it and very contentedly started picking and eating cherries. I was building up a small bit of resentment when a couple of small Titmice fluttered into the tree and began to help themselves. Well, as I said, it was sunset, birds here and yon were twittering, the sky was blue, and I realized that this one hell of an idyllic scene...that's when I noticed the rabbit grazing under the tree. Below is a story Jeffrey "Trump voters are hinterland bumblefucks" Wells posted today at his blog, Hollywood Elsewhere. Even his left-wing buddies in the comment section are saying he was an asshole and he's lucky he didn't get shot. Here it is:
I was rumbling around the WeHo Pavilions parking lot on the two-wheeler (his Honda scooter), looking for a spot. Five or six car lengths ahead I saw a little red Mercedes pull out so I gunned it, drove around an idling SUV and pulled in. I was stowing away the helmet when I heard this wailing sound coming from behind me. It was some 40ish guy going haaayyy! He was frowning from behind the wheel of his white four-door something or other and whining, I was waiting for that spot. Jesus! I was waiting for it! As if to say, what's the matter with you? Have you ever heard of parking lot manners? Law of the jungle, pal. Okay, if I'd seen you waiting for the spot I might not have taken it. I would actually rather not occupy any parking spot as I don't really need one. But I didn't see you so I took the spot and that's that. You chose to go bigger and slower with four wheels and I chose smaller with two wheels, and look who has the spot, asshole! There's a scene in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre that applies. Bearded Humphrey Bogart is dead broke and on the bum in Tampico. He's walking down a cobblestoned street when he sees a smoking, half-gone cigarillo that's been tossed into the gutter. Bogart wants to grab it but he hesitates out of pride. Fred C. Dobbs doesn't drop to his knees for a few puffs of tobacco, no, sir! Then he lunges for it anyway. Too late! A little Mexican kid grabs the cigarillo and saunters down the street, puffing away, cock of the walk. Bogart is seething. I wanted that damn cigarillo and okay, I hesitated but then I decided, and now some kid is enjoying it instead of me! Life sucks. The pissed-off Pavilions parking-lot guy in the white four-door was Humphrey Bogart, and I was the little kid with the lightning reflexes. Life is like that from time to time. Unfair, I mean, but I didn't rig it. Posted by: qdpsteve at June 18, 2017 11:37 PM (eMKNe) 304

Shoot, I remember my sainted mother pumping gas, and really pumping it. With a hand pump. When I was a kid, we had a gasoline tractor, and my father would get gas for it in a drum with a hand pump. Many times, the car would be low on gas, and she'd just pull the truck up with the drum and hand pump some gas it in.

Three of the five bright planets are easy to see in June, 2017: Jupiter, Saturn and Venus. Jupiter appears first thing at dusk and stays out until well after midnight. Saturn rises at dusk or nightfall and stays out for rest of the night. Venus rises before the sun and reaches its greatest elongation - its farthest point from the sun on our sky's dome - on June 3, 2017. Mars and Mercury will be hard to spot this month. Mars is buried deep in the glare of evening twilight. Mercury swings behind the sun in June, thereby transitioning from the morning to evening sky

If this Wells guy lives in SoCal and he's zipping around shopping center parking lots on a little scooter, here's what will eventually happen:
LE and paramedics will respond to an emergency call of a man and scooter crushed underneath a car. Upon investigation, the car will turn out to be an old beater that hasn't been registered or insured in years. Witnesses will report seeing a disheveled Latino male aged 18-35 hastily leaving the scene. There will be open liquor bottles and/or marijuana residues found inside the car. Fingerprints will not match anyone in the DMV databases. No arrest will be made. The car will be impounded. No one will turn up to claim it. Wells (or his estate) will end up suing the shopping center owner and the police department, alleging negligence. The jury will award fifty million dollars. Because mom's always remember the sunscreen, and raise perfect little kiddies, right? Right. I'm also a disabled vet, divorced with a young child, and my ex stole away with my daughter out of town Sunday on the ONE fucking day that's supposed to be set aside for my daughter and me, and guess what? The courts are too busy to give a fucking damn. Don't get me wrong - I'm not looking for sympathy and I don't take myself too seriously (and love a good joke) but with all the shit going on politically, it's getting slightly more difficult to laugh at videos like Gaffigan's. Yes....the French are quite proud of the valiant resistance to the Nazis, which consisted in most cases of selling them the stale croissants and withholding a friendly "bon jour" while passing on the street.
Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at June 19, 2017 05:32 AM (rF0hx) Not to mention many Frenchmen handing over neighboring Jews to the Germans for deportation/extermination. Drancy, anyone? Posted by: RickZ at June 19, 2017 05:48 AM (L1/KB) 454
The Records for the Milice Francais were mostly destroyed before Allied JAG teams could get to them.
The best estimate is that close to 300k french served in these security units. A good estimate is between 15-25 served in combat units with the germans. One example. http://preview.tinyurl.com/y72e7t5v Posted by: Tim in Illinois at June 19, 2017 05:52 AM (sf2BM) Posted by: Tim in Illinois at June 19, 2017 05:53 AM (sf2BM) 456

Part of my family ended up in Paris after leaving Russia in tje late 19th century. My father's cousin had his son placed on the baptismal roles by the local priest, but he refused for himself. The family survived the war, but for some unfathomable reason the son converted to Catholicism. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at June 19, 2017 06:00 AM (rF0hx) 457

In the US, Asian means Japanese, Chinese, or Vietnamese. In the UK, it means Pakistani. It's a dodge for the reality that Islam is not a racial issue, but a cultural one. The majority of Muslims (Arabs, Mediterraneans, Persians, and Central Asians) are Caucasian. Leftoids tend to get uncomfortable when you point that out, and take away their ability to demonize you as a racist. Posted by: Cato the Rebel Without a Party at June 19, 2017 06:30 AM (J+mig) 473

Generic birth control pills cost about $9.00 per month. The average female cable subscriber who probably gives next to zero shits, pays $10.00 per month for ESPN - whether she ever watches it. This is due to bundling and ESPN forcing cable providers to charge $10.00 per month per connection. Free birth control pills or unbundle ESPN's monopoly? People from the ME and North Africa ARE Caucasians. But there might be admixtures in some of the populations. But generally they are white in the same way Greeks, Sicilians and other Mediterranean people are.

"getting willing collaborators"
Every one alive today came from a lineage of survivors. If a group lives in rough terrain and has a source of food then they can keep their idiosyncratic beliefs. Otherwise they have to do as best they can. Posted by: mudd at June 19, 2017 06:54 AM (cfHE9) 481
I'm not a anthropologist, a biologist or a DNA expert but I seem to remember in school they taught that humans fall into 1 of 3 basic groups: Asians, Caucasians and Negros. It wasn't until I began filling out paperwork for enlistment that I found out about Native Americans, Latino and Foreign Born National.

Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at June 19, 2017 06:47 AM (xAvrH) Yes, he was. He wasn't Asian or African. Caucasian's a pretty broad category that includes pretty much everything that's not East-Asian, African, Hispanic, Native American, or Pacific Islander. Don't make it a racial thing. If it's not a racial issue, it takes away the typical Leftist tactic of dismissing you as a racist and ruining your reputation based on that.
They have to defend their indefensible idea that all cultures are equal. They do that, and they lose. Nobody in their right mind would equate the Anglosphere with a culture that makes women wear trash bags, says it's okay to beat your wife, stones people for venal sins, and advocates war and conquest with the majority of its religious canon. a person of European origin
a person from the Caucasus (southern Russia) You can tell an American (usually meaning US citizen) by what they say. By that definition Mark Steyn is an American. Once Michelle Malkin starts talking you know she is an American. John Kerry is a European. Obama is half European and half Arab. Posted by: mudd at June 19, 2017 07:02 AM (cfHE9) 488

So if I was born here, and both my parents were born here, am I considered a native?
Or because my grandmother immigrated through Ellis Island from County Down in 1911, am I considered Irish-American? I sometimes get confused, because I try to apply the rules equally to all. But at least I know why I like to drink. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at June 19, 2017 07:05 AM (J+eG2) Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at June 19, 2017 07:07 AM (xAvrH) 491
Still laughing at post 147 describing teen boys "as a walking attitude with a mouth that never quits." That is so correct. Just seeing it said by someone else cheered me up a great deal. I read it to my husband and he laughed too. I will not live to see my son having teens, but I'm going to save the post anyway.

(We are taught you must blame your father, your sisters, your brothers, the school, the teachers - but never blame yourself. It's never your fault. But it's always your fault, because if you wanted to change you're the one who has got to change. Katharine Hepburn)
I tell my daughter that Life is a transaction between yourself and the world. If you want your life to change, you can try to change the world (which is hopeless) or you can change yourself (which is painful but pays dividends). Happy to see Katherine Hepburn agrees with me...
