Will you look at that. No burkhas. No hijabs. Miniskirts. And no bearded thugs with automatic weapons driving around in pickup trucks. It looks like this is an American city. I've seen similar photos of Tehran from prior to 1979. Also Beirut. Did you know that Beirut used to be called "The Paris of the Mideast"? Yes, it did. But then, something must've happened in that part of the world. Something terrible. Something absolutely devastating and soul-crushing. We may never know what it is, though. It's a complete mystery. A life without miniskirted young women around is a life not worth living.

OT --MSM Comey testimony narrative has settled down to: yes his testimony was goodmfor Trump *legally* but not *politically* because Comey called Trump a liar and 'dirtied him up' Everyone from Judge Napolitano on FOX, to Maggie Habermann at NYT is saying this and they are saying it is JUST like his Hillary press conference, which was good for her legally but that 'meeting on tarmac hurt her more than previously thought' (actual quote from Maggie).
JFC these idiots never learn. Hillary getting away with ACTUAL wrong doing via a cover up by DOJ/FBI is not the same thing as Trump being vindicated that he did not do the wrong doing the DOJ/FBI was trying to frame him as doing in the press. Islam alone is too easy an answer. Hasn't Afghanistan been Muslim for centuries? And yet(presumably Muslim) women were dressing like that a generation ago.
Was it the dominant strain of Islam that changed? I think it was something like that. The Kingdom of Afghanistan ran from 1919 to 1973 and it was indeed Islamic-based...but it was more, worldly I guess. The government actively sought outside relationships with and influence from the outside world, including creating relationships with the US and the USSR. Part of these reforms included seeing what we see in that photo up there. It was in 1973 while the Afghan King was out of the country that his cousin staged a coup and took over. That cousin implemented even more reforms but distanced the country from the Soviets. A few years later a communist-friendly political faction staged a coup, executed said cousin and his family, and in my opinion set the country on the downward slide resulting in what we see today. Certainly highly conservative Islamic factions helped that along I think. The US didn't do much but help the mujahideen with materiel, but nothing much more than that. So I blame communism along with Islamofascism. Posted by: Witchdoktor, AKA VA GOP Sucks at June 08, 2017 08:51 PM (eytER) 92

Here's an interesting OT story:
The city of Berkeley has been in an uproar over a bizarre incident two days ago: A rich liberal hired a foreign-born nanny to take care of the liberal's two-year-old kid. The nanny, not being familiar with Berkeley, did not realize that the friendly-sounding "People's Park" was actually an open-air psycho-ward brimming with drug dealers, homeless bums, violent criminals, people on the lam from the cops, perverts, and generally the dregs of humanity -- and has been ever since the hippies declared the empty lot "The PEOPLE'S Park!!!" in 1969. Anyway, fast forward to Tuesday, where this naive nanny took the toddler out "to the playground" -- and chose People's Park as the playground. Well, a moment's inattention, and -- predictably -- a completely psychotic drug-addled "woman" hanging out at the park went over and pushed something into the baby's mouth. The nanny screamed, the cops were summoned, and the schizo chick, when asked what she had put in the baby's mouth, said it was a "Tootsie Roll." Luckily, the kid hadn't swallowed it, because it was recovered and found to be -- a packet of methamphetamine, which if the child had swallowed and if the wrapping had unraveled, was easily enough to be an immediately fatal dose. Like, dead within 30 seconds. The psycho chick was arrested for Attempted Murder, taken to jail, but after psychiatric evaluation was determined to be delusional and probably tripping on drugs herself and basically just a complete nutcase. The DA, probably assessing that any decent lawyer could easily demonstrate that the perpetrator's psychosis prevented any awareness of the significance of what she had done, and was not intending to kill the baby, lowered the charges to Giving an Illicit Substance to a Child and also Child Endangerment. Well, in the comments section of the newspaper articles about this, predictably, the lefties of Berkeley starting trotting out the "Oh, the poor criminal had such a traumatic life, 'she was a good girl,' we should show empathy and love for the would-be killer, she grew up in the depths of Oakland with a prostitute for a mom, 'she was a survivor,' etc. etc. etc. Furthermore, people were linking to an essay written by the perpetrator for some lefty Web site, detailing her sad life. Then the blowback from sane people saying "We don't give a shit about her sob story -- she tried to kill a baby," etc. Now is has just come out that the perp has a LONG history of violence, especially against cops. She has stabbed, bitten, broken bones, etc. multiple times -- and yet never got more than a slap on the wrist as punishment. She even ended one cop's career, the injuries were so bad. On top of this, she is a raving maniac, as evidenced by her mugshot and documented behaviors. And yet she is not not locked anywhere, and instead wanders the streets of Berkeley, imposing her dementia on society at large, and in general being to poster-freak for what liberal jail- and nuthouse-policies wreak -- by unleashing these maniacs on the general populace. Anyway, link here to the latest of several articles on the topic: http://www.berkeleyside.com/2017/06/08/ sheriffs-office-woman-charged-feeding-meth-child-berkeley-history-violence/ Posted by: zombie at June 08, 2017 08:54 PM (DQ4Fv) 108

"Jimmy is an evil bastard and I will celebrate when he goes to hell."
The antinuclear left are always telling us how radiation exposure has "no safe level whatsoever" and invoking the "linear no threshold" concept in which even tiny amounts of radiation do permanent biological damage. Well, Jimmuh, as a youngster in the Navy, was ordered to participate in the cleanup of the exploded SL-1 reactor. The entire building was a severe radiological mess. A large group were queued up and told each in turn to enter the building and perform a task (or a part of a task), while on a stopwatch, and then exit immediately as their time expired, even if they hadn't completed the task. And they were not to return. The dose they would be getting just in that short visit would be considerable. Just the sort of thing the antinuke left tells us will kill ya stone dead, or at minimum severely shorten your years on Earth. Yet for some reason Carter keeps on living. Hmmmmm. The Russian invasion of Afghanistan inspired more "mujihadeen", and spurred the creation of al Qaeda by Usama bin Ladin. al Qaeda means "the base", and he was raising money for the muj in Afghanistan. Obama was an order of magnitude worse than Carter. Carter could at least be considered a more or less patriotic American, although his policies were wrongheaded and his incompetence caused serious harm to the country.
Obama's hatred for America was palpable. He deliberately caused as much damage as he could. Before Obama, the general consensus was that the worst President was James Buchanan. His policies (or inaction, I'm not sure which) helped set the stage for the Civil War. Posted by: rickl at June 08, 2017 09:10 PM (sdi6R) 192

"Not old enough to know, so serious question: by the early 70's I assume Saudi Arabia and other countries in the area had significant oil wealth, but had it reached the ridiculous excess we now think of? In other words, when did they get rich enough to start exporting craziness?"
The Saudis really started minting money after they de facto expropriated Aramco from the Westerners who had worked hard and invested hugely to set it up. (An IPO of Saudi Aramco is now being floated, and various Western investment banks are invited to participate. So they're proposing to sell back what they stole. How gracious.) But it was, as suggested upthread, the internal eruptions within the Kingdom in the later 1970s which led the Saudis to start quietly funding Islamic movements abroad. To divert the energies of their homebrewed radicals to assaulting the kuffar elsewhere, instead of questioning and challenging the House of Saud. I think while you can find perpetrators of awful things among adherents of all religions, I think religions each have a "gravitational pull" exerted by their founding documents that acts over time in observable ways. So for instance in the Middle Ages you had the inquisition and forced conversion of Jews in Christianity, but those are based on strained readings, and they were dropped. There was American slavery, but books like Philemon and various verses in the NT speak out against it, and it was eventually dropped. Islam, on the other hand, has a gravitational pull that goes in the direction of subjugating the world, without placing any restraints upon the adherents. So when Turkey and Afghanistan recently emerged from it into secularism it was momentary... they did not reach escape velocity, and they are being pulled back down.

But I think the extremist sects have squeezed out all of the people with Western/classically liberal attitudes, or at least forced them into hiding. I got into an argument with someone for pointing out the main character is unlikeable in many ways. She was pissy to people from other cultures, used her marriage as a cover to do what she wanted, and got the morality police to punish a man just for looking at her. I thought the point was to show that she was kind of self-centered, but evidently that's not allowed for victims of oppression(tm).

208 I have been back to looking at revolutions lately. I am curious. Considering the US today please modify this sentence and replace, if you would, "commies" and "Muzzies". For the sake of argument, "tyrant" can stay. I have long examined the role of dissidents in revolutions and am beginning to question their weight and/or or perhaps the definition of that term. No matter. The sentence, should you choose to play of course. It's story of how the commies helped the Muzzies overthrow the "tyrant" -- and then were SHOCKED when their religious brethren turned their wrath on their former allies, the communists, and lined them up against the wall next. "With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil, that takes religion."
Posted by: Semi-engaged Scroller at June 08, 2017 09:46 PM (LQLeS) --- Or as I called it: a stream of equivocation. It's usually posted by people who claim the "good" people who did "evil" are actually evil. And it's also oblivious to the fact that Mao and Pol Pot thought they were saving people from the degradation of capitalism, so "good" in the Marxist viewpoint. And this is the further perpetuation of the confusion between "religion" and "zealotry". So that we can have endless discussions where we go between "secular religions" describing the Jacobins and the Marxists and "what makes religious people so nuts is believing in superstition". I've seen enough of this conversation to know that secularists may trot out "secular religions" on the subject of Marx, but almost never are consistent in their definition of religion and secular. German Rape -- Turkish Delight
In an age where a woman is considered to have been raped if she changes her mind after a consensual encounter, it would be reasonable to assume that a woman who screams for her rapist to stop as she fights back would be just as much of a rape victim. However, in Germany, if the victim is a German woman, and the rapist is one of the countless imported immigrants, it isn't rape, but rather cultural enrichment. http://politicalhat.com/?p=13348 Posted by: The Political Hat at June 09, 2017 03:21 AM (vBeA5) 391

114 Not old enough to know, so serious question: by the early 70's I assume
Saudi Arabia and other countries in the area had significant oil wealth, but had it reached the ridiculous excess we now think of? In other words, when did they get rich enough to start exporting craziness? After 1973, when oil prices spiked. Before that, SA's oil revenue was about $100M/year, enough to provide the King with a fancy lifestyle, but not Big Money. By 1980, SA was awash in money. 115 Was it the dominant strain of Islam that changed? *** Sayyid Qutb. Every westerner should know his name. Influential, but not critical. Hassan al-Banna was first. Also, Saudi funding of Islam made Wahhabism far more influential, and "Arabized" Islam in other countries. Posted by: Rich Rostrom at June 09, 2017 01:11 PM (YkV15) 397

Anyone explain better Am I misunderstanding but basically this would be Like if a super militant evangelical sect started expanding in the 70s and now eclipsed all other Christian sects? It would be like if say Carlos Slim died and left his $60B to a particular Catholic religious order with extreme views; so much money that they could now establish seminaries to train huge numbers of priests steeped in their doctrines, pay priests' salaries and church expenses all over the world, provide parochial school teachers and textbooks... The whole Church would be drawn in their direction. Posted by: Rich Rostrom at June 09, 2017 01:22 PM (YkV15) 398
I saw an interview of a family in Egypt, I think, and it had the same bizarre sense of Islam traveling backward in time. The Egyptian family in the interview was a father, mother and two daughters. The father and mother looked like the average older middle aged couple WE might expect to see.
Him wearing a button shirt with a little gut and a receding hairline. Her in a Hillary pantsuit and a just above the shoulder hair cut that women her age tend to adopt. Nothing special right, secular Muslims, the kind you hear about and wish you heard more from, but then they come to the daughters. The daughters were covered head to toe. People who wish that Islam would go thru a reformation don't understand what a reformation is or that Islam has just had one and that's the problem.
