Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread 5/28/17 (tmi3rd)Good evening, Morons and Moronettes, and welcome to tonight's ONT. I'm tmi3rd, and I'm enjoying my last summer break ever after my first year of medical school. Anyway, thank you for the opportunity to entertain you, and let's begin! More below the fold... Memorial Day I've quietly observed a number of my friends who have done multiple combat tours across the services on Memorial Day for the past few years. The words I'd use to describe them are quiet and reflective. The stories they've told me haven't gone into much detail, but it's quite clear what their fallen brothers mean to them. It's even more clear when the fallen brother saved someone else's life what it all means. My family are primarily Navy, but my great uncle went ashore with the Canadian 3rd Infantry Division on D-Day. He took a round in the rear end for his trouble, but he survived where many of his brothers did not. He spoke very little of it in the decades I knew him (he passed away a few years back). What speaks to me as a civilian is the sacrifices that my friends, both American and Canadian, have made for our great nations. When I watch my veteran friends with my children, and how much these warriors dote upon my children, it reminds me of the debt of honor I feel towards these warriors. It will be a true labor of love for me to attend to these warriors in their time of need, and I pray only to be worthy of the opportunity. If you're reading these words this evening, and the sadness is hitting you as you remember your brothers-in-arms, there is an ear and a shoulder waiting for you. You can find me on Twitter, and please know that I, along with my colleagues in the field, are around for you if you need us. It's the very least we can do. For the fallen, I raise my glass and pray that God Almighty cradles you in the palm of His hand for all eternity. Rest in peace, and may a grateful nation be worthy of your unconditional love. Tonight's musical selections... Tonight's theme is "Great Songs Overshadowed By Not-So-Great Movies". The first offering is from 707, the title track to the execrable movie Megaforce (1982). Now, I LOVED Megaforce as a kid, but let's not kid each other- it's a pretty bad movie. Barry Bostwick played our hero Ace Hunter, the late Persis Khambatta as his obligatory love interest, and so forth. It is quite frankly worth sitting through 90 minutes of movie so bad that it makes your average Junk Clod Von Dumb dialogue come across like Ronald Reagan's prime oratory just to get to this song in the closing credits: The second and third offerings are from a Canadian act known as Kick Axe, but known on the original Transformers: The Movie (1986) soundtrack as Spectre General. I've had the good fortune of playing both these next two tunes live as encores, and been astonished as the remaining audience quite literally rushed forward to listen. They are "Nothing's Gonna Stand In Our Way" and "Hunger". The soundtrack features Stan Bush (whom you'll know from various Van Damme movies), Vince DiCola (famous for the Rocky IV soundtrack and Staying Alive, and Lion, but these are unquestionably the two takeaway tracks from this soundtrack. One is the movie poster, and the second is my personal favorite, where they set footage from Street Fighter X Tekken against it. Any suggestions? Throw 'em in the comments, by all means. It's the most wonderful time of the year... Longtime Morons and Moronettes will recall that Drew M. and I are big hockey guys. I played two years of college hockey, and worked as an official in minor-league hockey for nearly a decade. Not hailing from an NHL market, I adopted the Nashville Predators as my team when my wife and I moved there a decade ago (we've since moved on). This is the first time a team that I have an emotional attachment has played for the Stanley Cup. The Pittsburgh Penguins, who are the defending Stanley Cup champions, boast the best 1-2 punch in the league at center with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Both their goaltenders have won Stanley Cups with Pittsburgh, and even though their defensive corps have been decimated by injuries, they've shown remarkable resiliency in these playoffs. My Predators, on the other hand, have probably the best defensive corps in the league (four of their six defensemen would be No. 1 defensemen on almost any other team in the league), and goaltender Pekka Rinne has been stellar in their playoff run. They have some very capable forwards in Viktor Arvidsson, Filip Forsberg, and former Penguin James Neal. On the celebrity front, team captain Mike Fisher is married to country music star Carrie Underwood. It should be a hell of a series, and if the Pens' last two series are any indication, it'll go seven games. Wrapping up... I thought about goofing with this a bit more, but on the eve of Memorial Day, I figured it might be better to stick with that theme, and tie it in with hockey. The Montreal Canadiens quote "In Flanders Field" (the World War I poem) in their locker room... ...and so it seems only right to put the whole thing in tonight's thread. So once again- to all who have worn the uniform, my thanks to you. For all who have given their lives in the service of our great nation, we are in debt to you. May we as a nation strive to ever be worthy of the love you have shown us. That's what I've got for tonight- if you need to get a hold of me, come find me on Twitter, and y'all play nice... I've got to get up in the morning, so I won't be around terribly late monitoring the thread. Thanks for reading! -tmi3rd PS- via Maetenloch- Top 10 commenters: Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Earlier this morning they had a movie about the end result of their attack. Above and Beyond. A move about Col. Paul Tibbets.
Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. There's a place in Columbus called Mott's Military Museum. A small private military museum. Paul Tibbets lived in Columbus before he died, and used to hang out there from time to time. They've got a lot of his stuff there on display. I just missed meeting him once. They also have Arnold's M-47 that he drove in the Austrian Army. It was hauled to Columbus when they were going to build a Planet Hollywood at the Easton Shopping Center. When that fell through, the M-47 ended up at Mott's. Arnold comes out to see his tank every year when he is in town for the Arnold Classic in March. For those of you familiar with personalities on the Internet, Jim aka Jim81Jim aka Internet Aristocrat aka MisterMetokur has been making monthly videos about the follies of various contributors on the That Guy With the Glasses website. This month's video is about SpoonyOne aka Noah Antwiler. And it's a doozey, with a run-time of about 40 minutes. http://tinyurl.com/y8z3acqz Here's the TL;DR version. Don't do the following if you wish to keep a fan-base accumulated over half a decade: 1) Treat your fans with disdain. 2) Over-promise via Patreon perks and then under-deliver (or worse, not deliver at all). 3) Stop providing updates and regular content. 4) Have an abrasive personality that prevents you from accepting criticism and advice. This video also provides the answer to that age-old question of how does one go from getting 5k a month on Patreon to under $800/month? Answer - by being a complete fucking asshole. So, the most toxic of the Personality Disordered in my life are now relegated to No Contact, which is a very good thing.
Next goal might be a bit more complex: -I have to cover a project my former bosses are working on -In the past, I would interview them -They have Really Highly Annoyed me, so I have decided NOT to chat with them -However, I will cover what they did via Other People who I do not dislike I'm hoping this plan works and there are no monkey wrenches thrown in, like former bosses contacting me directly. I do have a contingency plan if this happens. Thankfully, the current boss is not necessarily in love with my former bosses either, so I do have that going for me. Don't confuse networking over power lines with Internet/Broadband over power lines. The former makes use of your local low voltage power wiring to transmit networking signals. Ethernet over Romex might be descriptive. The idea was to avoid having to run Cat 5 cable. Wifi has about made that unnecessary, but there are still some situations where wifi won't work too well -- signals don't propagate well for some reason. The latter is using the utility power distribution system to transmit broadband internet service. Just Google it and read about all the problems. Yep, the power transformers on the poles and pad mounts do wonderful at 50 and 60Hz, but they don't do so good at RF frequencies. Also, power lines will radiate RF like crazy. Now, they use a signalling system as it is for control communication over the grid. I'd have to look that up to see how it works. I can vaguely remember reading about it years ago, but I've forgotten. But that tech is not suitable to be modified for internet. Now, they use a signalling system as it is for control communication over the grid. I'd have to look that up to see how it works. I can vaguely remember reading about it years ago, but I've forgotten. That's a very low frequency RF signal only used on the very high voltage lines and filtered out on the ends in the substation. Used to detect faults. Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at May 29, 2017 12:18 AM (IqV8l) 362

I use power line Ethernet over Romex to connect my TWO Broadband internet routers...
Why? because.... Brick.... 60 year old house when they actually built them to last.... so you can't punch a wi fi signal from one end of the house to the other... Works like a champ.... Posted by: Don Q. at May 29, 2017 12:12 AM (NgKpN) Which is probably what those Germans are talking about as well. A lot of their buildings are in the "built to last" category I think. So perhaps they're talking about the powerlines as internal network routing, but it still arrives to the building via DSL. Long story to describe, but there was a German guy who used to live around here. They moved away over 10 years ago to live closer to their children as they got old and feeble. He was on a U-boat in WWII, and got captured and spent the war in a POW camp, Georgia IIRC. He liked it so much here, that he came back as soon as he could after the war. Imagine that, you're in a prison camp in a country and you like it so much, you don't want to leave. Anyway, he brought some old friends of his over one time. MMMM. Nicely boxed and widened. Lovely formatting.
First gun for 12-year-old, what to do, what to do. It's gonna be a 22 rifle. He thinks he wants an AR style, and though cool looking, I'm liking the compact version of the Ruger American Rimfire. The stock butt piece is removable and the one from the full size gun can go on it when he grows up. Pull length of the compact is right for him now, but in three years or less he'll need the other. And when his kid brother turns about 11, he can shoot it too, with the compact butt piece. Yeah, I know the S&W M&P Sport AR-type .22 has an easy-in easy-out stock, but when we tried it out at the store it seemed way undersized at full extension. Are these AR type guns supposed to feel so cramped? Posted by: Les Kinetic at May 29, 2017 12:53 AM (U6f54) Posted by: Kindltot at May 29, 2017 12:53 AM (mkDpn) 487

so, the funniest, likely most effective pick up line I have come across was from one of my favorite catetories of people, a friend of a friend. he went by the name smitty. he was tall, thin, sleazy. lounge lizard in flannel with a really thin patchy mustache and goateeish thing. pretty much a dirtball.
anyway, when we were at a bar he would sidle up to a girl and say "hey little girl, want some candy?" half the girls were repulsed, about a quarter would giggle, and the remaining quarter would say something back to him. easily half the ones that would talk back would be available to leave with him at the end of the night. never tried the line, not really my speed. but it was rerally funny. the best thing he had going for him was this line. I guess that's OK if you want to make 2D stuff like screens, or signs, or weathervanes, but hard to make 3D stuff like furniture or boats. I suppose one could use it to build a boat by electronically "slicing" a 3D image of a boat in quarter-inch increments in planes normal to the long axis, and then use the cutter to cut however many slices it would take to assemble a boat. An eight-foot dinghy would need 384 slices. Build a jig, and glue and clamp the 384 slices together. But how strong the resulting structure would be, I don't know. Posted by: Zettai Ryoiki at May 29, 2017 02:17 AM (e9G8E) Well, it seems to only work within a 4X8 workspace, but I guess if you were wishing to cut larger panels, you could move the workpiece under the cutter, and take another pass, if the software would permit that. One limitation I see is that there seems to be no provision for putting a beveled edge on the cut panels, and plywood boat construction usually demands a beveled edge. One possible technique: use the machine to cut "bread slices" of the boat from sheets of styrofoam. Use glue to assemble these slices into a boat form, and then sand it smooth, and lay up fiberglass cloth and resin on the form, both inside and out. I found out yesterday that Nicky Hayden died a week or so ago. He was the last American to win the MotoGP Championship (2006). He was not a well known sports figure but the racing community knew about him. A good ole boy (from Kentucky) who won lots of races in the motorcycle world. He was 35.
I'm not too surprised Greg Allman died. His past finally caught up with him. The Allman Brothers Band stopped playing together a couple of years ago. Butch Trucks committed suicide this year too. Still, Greg will be missed. A hell of a singer. Posted by: Puddleglum at May 29, 2017 03:56 AM (DfC8b) 603

He was in the Normandy invasion and joked that they put all the big guys up front for the landing so they would "scare the Germans". He said that was a lie, there were three guys hiding behind him. That was all he ever said about that day.

As a hockey guy, surprised that the Memorial Cup wasn't mentioned. A trophy for the Canadian Major Junior Hockey leagues was awarded last night, probably the only trophy harder to earn than the Stanley Cup itself. It was a smashing affair as the Windsor (ONT) Spitfires defeated presumptive champions Erie (PA) Otters 4 - 3. Hell of a game, so many young men who will earn paychecks playing professional hockey, some at the highest level. The Stanley Cup should be a good series, but I do think that the Penguins will be the first repeat champion since the Detroit Redwings in 1998 and they will do it in 6 games. I have no dog in the hunt as I hate each team equally, but will be rooting for former Dallas Stars' Vern Fiddler and James Neal for Nashville and former Star Trevor Daley for Pittsburgh. G-D Bless all that have served in defense of our liberty and gave all and bless all that stand in that defense now. Your country owes you so much.

Pittsburgh has had to fight all the way to the SC. The "easiest" series they had was against Columbus (4-1). It wasn't that easy. Washington and Ottawa both went 7 games. Hopefully they have a bit more in the tank against Nashville. Probably go 7 (its what the Pens do). My Penguins take it though. I am a hopeless fanboy so don't put money on that. I was reading somewhere that Charles Barkley has been watching the Stanley Cup playoffs instead of the NBA because its been way more competitive. Apparently he said this while broadcasting on TNT. I'm sure that went over splendidly at the NBA offices.

646: The future is going to suck for Germany (and Europe in general) regardless. Demographics is Destiny.
Posted by: Puddleglum at May 29, 2017 06:39 AM (DfC8b) Chancellor Merkel says Europe can't depend on America or the UK to defend them anymore? I'd bet that the first hint of trouble for them, they would be knocking on our door again. but I would just pretend that I'm not home. Posted by: Colin at May 29, 2017 06:50 AM (oVrUR) 655

Moreover, the people smugglers in Libya are not even bothering to waste money on fuel. Just get the boats out into the Mediterranean a few miles and the Euros rescue them and land them on the northern shore instead of returning them to the south.
