The Honeysuckle Bower
Peter Paul Rubens

This is a self-portrait with his first wife, Isabella Brant. I love this work. Their faces are marvelous, he's rocking that sword, and she has a bit of the devil in her....

Apparently they went clubbing after the last sitting for this portrait, and got a bit frisky on the dance floor and were asked to leave by the Burghermeister of Antwerp, who was scandalized by the Rubens' behavior. This may or may not be true, but really, history is only what I make of it...

10 I doubt Isabella could have got *too* frisky on the dance floor. Think how heavy all those clothes must be - and it probably would have taken a good ten minutes just to get out of them.

I love Rubens, though. Being a Female of Heft, I like the way he portrayed us ;-)

29 Aside from the sheer beauty and aesthetic qualities of his work, Rubens is one of the greatest painters in terms of technical proficiency alone--by that I mean the meticulous care and craft he put into building the painting as an object meant to last for hundreds of years. None did it better.

The entire painting is simply appealing. If that anecdote isn't true, it should be. They look like they are ready for some fun that would outrage a few prigs. The whole thing is delightful.

I wonder if the index finger on the lady's hand, with its odd position, has a meaning. It lacks the grace of the rest of her pose.

I can appreciate the outreach your bishop did. Though he should have sealed the deal by closing the letter with "Yours in Christ".
With that said, I share the disgust with the US Bishops -especially the USCCB. The NH Diocese was assigned a new bishop about 3yrs ago. I was quite impressed with him. Especially in his efforts of tearing down the hierarchy that was created previously and reaching out into the community. But I'm seeing some serious leftward leanings that is starting make me concerned.

Why I love my church. I run tech/graphics/sound/whatever needs doing on sunday mornings. Last Veteran's Day the pastor sent out an email asking me to come up with an appropriate video to show before the service. I found a very nice one starring Ronaldus. The worship leader said no, that's political. We kept going back and forth and I finally had to ask the pastor to step in and make the call. "Love me some Ronnie, show the clip."

Our pastor is an avid hunter and gun owner. After the thing in Charleston, I started carrying every Sunday. I went to him first to make sure it was cool. "Absolutely. I prefer you do in fact. I figure the more good guys we have with guns the better."

Yep, and Elizabeth and James I were dead by that time. The English Civil war was just warming up and the 30 years war was sputtering along I think.

The lady's hat was part of the Fashionable Court Dress in Spain up through the end of the 18th Century, for all that Elizabeth would wear it too.

But I was going by the style of painting, which is much more modern that I associate with Elizabethan/Stewart paintings.

Visit and see if they have any type of projector screen, hymnals in the pews with "Pyre in the blud" and "It Is Well With My Soul" still listed in the index, and if more than a few middle aged men (and younger) are wearing suits. 244 We're now finding out why Comey is sandbagging Trump with lies: Turns out he lied to Congress regarding the use of FISA by the FBI.

"In his final congressional testimony before he was fired
by President Trump this month, then-FBI Director James Comey
unequivocally told lawmakers his agency used sensitive espionage data
gathered about Americans without a warrant only when it was "lawfully
collected, carefully overseen and checked."

Once-top secret U.S. intelligence community memos reviewed by Circa
tell a different story, citing instances of "disregard" for rules,
inadequate training and "deficient" oversight and even one case of
deliberately sharing spy data with a forbidden party.

For instance, a ruling declassified this month by the Foreign
Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) chronicles nearly 10 pages
listing hundreds of violations of the FBI's privacy-protecting
minimization rules that occurred on Comey's watch.

The behavior the FBI admitted to a FISA judge just last month ranged
from illegally sharing raw intelligence with unauthorized third parties
to accessing intercepted attorney-client privileged communications
without proper oversight the bureau promised was in place years ago."

NH State law it is allowed. Diocesan rules .Yet, signs have no legal standing. If you are found to be carrying, you can't be arrested unless you are asked to leave AND refuse to do so.
Check your Diocesan website, and I'm sure it is universal across the US.
Which, considering the terrorist threats (despite the cries that it isn't about religion), church leaders might want to start taking physical security seriously.

297
The escalating crisis surrounding the Russia investigation (with reports last night on FBI interest in Jared Kushner) looks like good news for somebody in the White House: Steve Bannon.

Nine sources in the West Wing and within Trump's close orbit said the Russia situation is Bannon's shot at redemption. He's being described as a "wartime consigliere" relishing a fight against the "deep state," media, Democrats and investigators.

Why it matters: Bannon had been on very rocky footing recently (to the extent that the President has vented to a number of people about him), but the bolstering of the White House team to respond to the outside crises is a joint effort led by Kushner, Bannon and Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, two sources said. The senior staff that had been out for each other is now united by a common enemy.

"It is now very clear that there is a unified opponent and that's ultimately the swamp, both with regard to the deep state leakers, to the partisan opponents and the people who just don't want to give up their power. That includes the media," said one source close to the process. "Obviously you want it ( unity ) under different circumstances but it's really united this team and helped bring clarity to their focus."

The proposed war room (the planning for which Mike Allen scooped yesterday) is not currently conceived as being about replacing current staff but adding "experienced veterans from the campaign trail who recognize the gravity of the situation," the source added.

497 Always late to the party.

Assume many have already asked why Matthew Broderick appeared as a subject in a Rubens painting.

But back to the news dump.

Didn't read the Conservative Review article yet, but I'm guessing it will be echoing things some of us have been saying since the first lawless WA district judge's order. Of course the executive has an obligation to disregard lawless acts by the judiciary. Duh. That's as much a part of the system as the obligation to follow lawful orders. Otherwise, there *is no system* - as, for the moment, is the case WRT immigration/admissions authority.

Of course the far better remedies for judicial misbehavior - modification of jurisdiction by Congress, or removal of individual judges - have long been mothballed by a lazy and mediocre political culture in Congress. Leaving prudent executive repudiation the only practical option.

But the robotic and dogmatic mindset of legal types - that the forms of judicial supremacy, regardless of substance, are somehow the essence of the rule of law - remains an even greater obstacle.
